The only tennis podcast with a focus on doubles. We believe doubles should be more popular and get more coverage than it does, so we’re fixing that. Our goal is to help you become a better player with pro doubles tips and expert strategy. We interview ATP & WTA tour doubles players and top tennis coaches to help you improve your game.
Matt Futterman is an award-winning sports journalist for The Athletic and New York Times. His new book is The Cruelest Game: Chasing Greatness in Professional Tennis.
This is a fascinating conversation about the book and why professional tennis can feel uniquely brutal, even for the best players in the world.
We talk through the childhood pipeline, the mental load of constant losing, and what separates the era of Serena, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic from the stars trying to survive now.

The ATP is rumored to be shrinking men’s doubles draws and shifting prize money over to singles, part of what has been a slow retreat from doubles over the past few decades.
I don't agree with the decision and wanted to talk with someone who understands the ATP's side. Ben Rothenberg is a journalist who broke the news about the potential plans yesterday. He's also been on the show before (listen here).
Ben shares what he knows about what's happening, and the case the ATP has to make such a decision. I attempt to analyze the business logic, the marketing failures, and what it would take for doubles to grow without relying on singles stars.
We discuss:
I'm not exactly satisfied with the conclusion of this conversation, but I want to keep it going to help move tennis and doubles forward.

The US Open just announced its entry list for the 2025 Mixed Doubles Tournament. In case you missed it, they've made significant changes to the event this year, which I discussed with Dan Kiernan and many players at Indian Wells back in March on the podcast.
This episode, recorded on Instagram Live with Philip from Tweener Head Tennis, includes my initial reaction to the entry list and a deeper discussion surrounding mixed doubles and ATP/WTA doubles.
As the US Open revamps the event with singles stars over doubles specialists, there's one thing we know for sure... change is already here, and more is coming.
Here's a bit of what we discuss.
I enjoy conversations like this to explore the solutions and potential changes for doubles. I hope this leads to positive outcomes for doubles and doubles specialists.

An exploration of the ongoing debate surrounding professional doubles and its future. In this episode, I directly address the recent comments about doubles from Andy Roddick and Jon Wertheim on the Served Podcast, ignited by Reilly Opelka. I also created a separate video addressing the issue (see links in show notes below).
I believe one of the problems we face is that there has been an echo chamber culture around the doubles debate. We need people with different opinions to come together for conversations that create change. While I haven't been able to get Andy, Jon, or Reilly on the podcast yet, I thought this was the next best thing.
Here's what I attempt to cover.
I hope this episode helps keep the conversation going and creates positive change for tennis. I certainly don't have all the answers, but if we can have productive debates and explore solutions tennis will benefit.

Jamie Murray is a 7-time Grand Slam Doubles Champion and a former world #1 with 34 career men's doubles titles. I set up a 15-minute interview with Jamie during the Dallas Open and we didn't talk about any of that. We also didn't discuss strategy, tactics, or mindset for improving your doubles game. I never asked about his story, or mentioned his brother Andy or his mother Judy.
Instead, we talked about how to grow professional doubles. And the conversation lasted a full hour.
Jamie is uniquely qualified to tackle this problem because of his success on the pro tour and his experience as the tournament director at the Queen's Club Championships, an ATP 500 Event.
During this conversation, we dive deep into all topics related to making doubles better.
My hope is that this episode generates more conversations that lead to positive change for doubles. I think there is a larger market for doubles if it's delivered and broadcasted the right way.
You can do your part by watching doubles on TV, engaging with doubles content on social media, and if you're a player, building your own brand by engaging with fans and media to get your story out there.

Styrling Strother is an innovative tennis coach who trains junior players and adults to transform the way they practice and think about the match court. He is a Tennis Performance Trainer (TPT) with the International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA), a PTR Professional Coach, a best-selling author, and the founder of Styrling Strother Tennis, a player development program located in Cary, North Carolina.
This episode will totally shift your practice habits, and inject fun into your doubles matches. Styrling shares some transformational ideas with me in this episode.
We also discuss his new book, The Art of Winning Tennis, which offers strategies that change the way you see the court. I'm about halfway done with the book and it's already got me thinking about adjustments for my next match.
As we dissect the traditional practice court paradigm, you'll discover why it's critical to move beyond technique to the strategic 'where, when, and why' of each shot. You'll learn to embrace the pressure of in-match scenarios through our in-depth analysis of scoring and drill modifications that mimic match conditions.

Bob Bryan is a 23-time doubles grand slam champion (16 men's, 7 mixed), and Captain of the US Olympic and Davis Cup team. Bob and his brother, Mike, known as the Bryan Bros, are widely regarded as the greatest doubles team of all time.
In this conversation with Bob, you'll hear us discuss potential rule changes that could help doubles, how he's transitioned from player to coach, his experience captaining at the Olympics where his US doubles teams beat Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Murray, and won Silver and Bronze Medals, and more.
Bob also shares how the game has changed over the last 20+ years and how he would train differently if starting his doubles career tomorrow. At the end, he shares one of his and Mike's favorite doubles strategies that club-level players should absolutely use.
I hope to have Bob (and Mike) on more in the future as the show continues to grow and we try to help grow doubles. They've done more for doubles than anyone and it's inspiring to see them continue to be involved in our sport.

Fabio Molle is the founder of Functional Tennis, a company that created products to help tennis players improve. Their Saber is one of the only training tools that I use and highly recommend to doubles players.
In this episode, Fabio shares the story of the Functional Tennis Saber, how it is made, and why so many pro-level players are using it including Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Harri Heliovaara, Joe Salisbury, and more.
I personally love the Saber for my volleys because it helps me consistently find the sweetspot and hit a cleaner ball. However, Fabio considers it a footwork tool.
If you are serious about improving your volleys and doubles game overall, the Saber is a must-have product. I promise it will make you a better player.

🎾🥈 Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram won an Olympic Silver medal for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics. I spoke with them a few weeks after the Olympics to hear about their experience in Paris, beating Rafael Nadal & Carlos Alcaraz, working with the Bryan Bros, and more.
We talked about how difficult it was to close out their quarterfinal match against Nadal and Alcaraz with the crowd so against them. What were they feeling and saying in those moments? They also shared how "comforting" it was to have the doubles GOATs, Bob and Mike Bryan, in Paris with them. At the end, they share the overall Olympic experience and how it felt to be there with Team USA.
Rajeev and Austin will both compete at the US Open next week, and I'll be there as well. Watch them and all the doubles action on ESPN Plus. If you're attending in person, let me know. I'd love to meet you.

Over the past six months, I've closely studied net players at every level of tennis. One of the most difficult concepts to teach is where the your eyes should be at the net.
This episode covers where to focus your eyes and what to look for when you're at the net. Almost no club-level players get this right because it goes against our natural tendency to follow the ball. But, if you understand when to look at the ball vs the opponents, you'll be able to read the ball earlier, force more errors, and get more easy volleys.

Murphy Jensen is the 1993 French Open doubles champion, tennis coach, cardiac arrest survivor, mental health advocate, keynote speaker, co-founder of WEconnect, TV host, and the most impactful guest we've ever had on the Doubles Only Podcast.

Murphy suffered from depression and addiction while on tour, considered taking his own life, and was saved by a hotel manager. Decades later he fell on the tennis court and didn't breathe on his own for 18 minutes. Today, he lives in Austin, Texas, still plays tennis, and helps others suffering from mental health problems.

Horacio Zeballos and Marcel Granollers are one of the most accomplished doubles pairings of the last five years on the ATP Tour. I spoke with them in Miami after their second-round win.
We discussed their 7-5 6-3 win which Horacio said was one of their "best matches this year." They faced two players whom they've faced many times, Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo. We talk about how they handle facing players who they know so well and who know them, as well as the windy conditions.
I also asked them if they believe their consistent partnership helps early in the season when other teams are often new. At the end, Horacio and Marcel open up about what changes might help doubles become more popular.

Adam Ross from Florida Tennis joined me for this interview.
We asked the US Open champs about the match, including a specific tactic they kept going to that I picked up on. They talked about team chemistry and if they think it helps them early in the season, and how to play doubles vs singles players.
You'll hear Adam ask them about training for no-ad or pressure points and what club players can learn by watching the pros. Rajeev's answer to this has nothing to do with tennis and is something all doubles players should hear.

Rohan Bopanna won the Australian Open earlier this year, reached #1 in the world, and turned 44 years old on March 4th.
I spoke with Rohan at the Miami Open after his round 1 victory. He and his partner, Matt Ebden, won that match in a third set after dropping the first. We discuss adjustments he made to turn it around.
I also asked Rohan how he spent his offseason after losing in the US Open final and finishing strong to end 2023. How did he come back better in 2024 at 43 years old?
At the end, we discuss lessons from his longtime coach, Scott Davidoff, and how to make doubles more popular.

World #1, Austin Krajicek, joins the show for the second time. We recorded from the hotel lobby in Miami where Austin had a few days off due to weather.
Listen to my previous interview with Austin here: https://www.thetennistribe.com/austin-krajicek-interview/
We discuss how he spent his off days, book recommendations, hotel choices in Miami, the no-ad/10-point breaker format, and his 2024 season so far. Austin and his partner, Ivan Dodig, have made one final this year but have had some very close losses that he believes will even out over time. At Indian Wells, they lost 10-7 in the third to the eventual champions who only dropped that one set all week.
You'll hear how Austin focuses on the process and doesn't put too much weight on any one tournament or month. He uses a "52-week mindset". You'll also hear Austin discuss his Olympic plans and thoughts on making doubles more fan-friendly.

This conversation with Australian Open Champion, Matt Ebden, focuses on the state of professional doubles and where it might go over the next several years.
Helping to make pro doubles more popular is one of my passions and missions for Tennis Tribe and this podcast, so I was excited to chat with Matt about this topic.
Matt is the 3rd ranked doubles player on the ATP tour, a 3-time grand slam champion, and reached a career-high of #39 in singles. He is also on the ATP Player's Council and involved in many of the meetings that will impact the future of doubles. I asked him to update us on where doubles stands and what needs to happen going forward.
Here's a bit of what you'll learn.
After having this conversation, I'm optimistic and excited about the future of professional doubles.

Tereza Mihalíková is the 56th-ranked doubles player on the WTA Tour. Tennis Tribe writer, Hanlon Walsh, and I spoke with her at the ATX Open where she partnered with Yanina Wickmayer during her off day.
This is a short conversation where we ask about her win vs Sloane Stephens & Peyton Stearns, 4-6 6-2 10-2. Tereza played a near-perfect tiebreaker and was super active at the net. We discussed the match up against two "singles players" and how it differs from playing doubles players.
We also discussed how she spent her days off in Austin, why she practiced twice on Friday in preparation for her semifinal match on Saturday, her goals for the year, and her favorite hobby (visiting rabbit farms).
Tereza has developed into a fantastic doubles player so I highly recommend you watch and learn from her if you get the chance. Tereza & Yanina made the semifinals in Austin before withdrawing.

This episode includes two interviews with the finalists, after their quarterfinal and semifinal victories. We spoke about each matchup, including the different conditions throughout the week. They partnered together for the first time in Austin and made the deadline by only 7 minutes!
You'll learn why Bibiane likes to scout opponents while Katarzyna likes to focus on herself. I also ask Katarzyna why she looks down until right before her opponent is serving, a unique ritual I noticed while watching her play.

This is the first in a series of post-match interviews with doubles players from the ATX Open, in Austin, Texas. Maya Joint (Australia) and Sabina Zeynalova (Ukraine) won their first-round match 6-7 6-4 10-4 and chatted with me after.
Sabina is a junior at the University of Texas where she plays on the women's tennis team. Maya (17) plans to join her in the fall of '24 as a freshman.
We spoke about how the cold, windy match conditions affected their strategy. They also shared a few things they learned on the court playing for the first time together. You'll get a sense of what it's like for college tennis players preparing for a professional career.
I expect you'll hear these two names more often in the coming years as they continue to improve. After this conversation, they lost their quarterfinal match in Austin to the top seeds 11-9 in the third set.

In this episode, I interview one of the greatest tennis coaches ever. Coach Rick Macci has coached tennis for over 40 years. He's helped five players reach world #1 including Serena and Venus Williams, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Jennifer Capriati. If his name sounds familiar, it may be because Rick was portrayed by Jon Bernthal in the movie "King Richard".
Rick shares several entertaining stories from when he coached these players, the type of mindset he encourages players to adopt, and stories from their junior days. One interesting part of the episode is his explanation for why he thinks playing doubles is especially helpful for younger professional players. He uses Coco Gauff as one example.
We also discuss:
You'll get a lot out of this episode in terms of strategy and mindset. Rick has a new book coming out called Billion Dollar Mind that we chat about as well. At the end, Rick talks about how he likes to use video to help club-level players improve. Something I'm a big advocate of and use all the time myself.

This is a conversation with Demi Schuurs from the WTA Finals in Cancun. Demi partnered with Desirae Krawczyk and I spoke with her between her first and second matches.
We discussed how she spent her days off in Cancun, including her gym routine. I asked her how she's had so much doubles success with different partners. This is her 5th consecutive WTA Finals with four different partners. Demi made a surprise appearance in the singles draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara and she tells us the story of how that happened.
Towards the end, we talk about their first match where they lost 9/9 deciding points. She tells me what "playing more aggressively" means to her and analyzes previous matchups against the teams in their group. She actually keeps a notebook that she writes in after each match. Dan Kiernan is the coach of 2023 US Open Champion Gaby Dabrowski, ATP doubles team Lloyd Glasspool & Harri Heliovaara, a podcast host, and a former podcast guest from earlier this year.
Dan chatted with me and Tennis Tribe doubles writer, Hanlon Walsh, from the WTA Finals in Cancun a day after Gaby and her partner, Erin Routliffe, beat the top seeds, Coco Gauff & Jessica Pegula, in straight sets. In this conversation, we discuss the match, the game plan, and a specific phrase Dan told the players when up a set and 3-1... "start again". I asked him what that meant.
Some of my favorite interviews are with coaches because they have a way of articulating what happens on the court so that we can use it in our own matches better than most players. Dan is one of those coaches. His answers are thoughtful, complex, and applicable to your own doubles game and life.

We discussed how they handled the delays, as well as a tactic I noticed their opponents using on 2nd serves and how they handled that. I also asked them about playing in the windy conditions, especially Elise who likes to use the lob often. I found her response surprising.

This is another interview from the WTA Finals and it's a great one. We chatted with 2020 US Open Champions, Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegmund, after their 3-set victory over Krejcikova and Siniakova.
We discussed the rollercoaster of a match where they lost a two-break-lead in the 2nd set as well as two match points in the tiebreaker. I asked how they were able to stay focused after the momentum changed.
Laura is one of the most aggressive net players in the game with next-level instincts (super fun to watch). She shares how she adjusts when she does get beat down the line, which happened several times during the match. I loved her answer to this.

Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter are the #2 seeds at this year's WTA Finals in Cancun. This is a short conversation with them after their 1st round match where they defeated Aoyama & Shibahara 6-4 6-2.
We discussed how they took momentum after going down an early break in the first set. Then I asked them how they game plan against a player like Shuko Aoyama who takes away the net. Elise also shares where she gets her ridiculously effective lob. I really liked her answer here. They talk a bit about having a lefty-righty combo, and Storm answers some questions about her plans for 2024 as she tries to balance a singles and doubles career.

2nd serve points only account for about 35% of points in doubles, but it's crucial to have a good 2nd serve strategy. Your goal should be to win 50% or more of your 2nd serve points.

Communication and teamwork in doubles aren't easy to teach or measure. That's why I think I've neglected the subject a bit over the years. But over and over, the world's best players, like recent podcast guests and US Open Champions, Rajeev Ram & Erin Routliffe, continue to stress the importance of working together with their partner, communicating effectively, and building trust.
This episode covers what I think you should be communicating with your partner before, during, and after your matches, including what to do during tiebreakers and pressure moments. Following this advice should help you better strategize and communicate with your doubles partner.

I recently played in USTA 9.0 Mixed Doubles Sectionals in Abilene, TX. This episode covers 3 lessons learned from my time there with our team. We didn't have a great performance but you can always learn from your losses.
I discuss choosing return sides and playing with strengths in the middle of the court with an example from one of our 4.5/4.5 teams who hadn't played together before. On every shot in doubles, you can choose which direction you want to hit the ball. But how do you know you're choosing the right direction?

This is a rebroadcast of my interview with Jorge Capestany from September 2021.How well do you know your doubles partner?

The first two tactics are from the course where you can see real examples of each tactic being executed. They are called the Shoe Shine and the Sneaky Lob.
The last one is from a recent 9.0 mixed doubles match where my partner and I made what turned out to be a fantastic adjustment to come back after dropping the first set 7-6(4).

When are the best times to hit with more power in doubles? More importantly, when should we hit the ball SLOW?!

This episode will help you use your movement to force more errors, get into your opponent's head, and help your partner hold serve more easily. You'll also learn one of my favorite movements out of the I-formation when my partner is serving.

All of the time I play people who have a bigger serve, better forehand, and more technically-sound volleys than me.
If we played a singles match they would win, if a coach fed us balls they would look much better, and shot-for-shot I could never beat them.
But, I don’t have to. Too many of these players manage to beat themselves. Maybe you are that player.
If you find yourself making too many errors, especially when it comes to shot selection, then this episode could raise your NTRP rating by .5 or more.
During this episode, we’ll focus on five scenarios where you can start making fewer mistakes and winning more points.
A few of the questions answered include:
Ultimately, to win more tennis matches, it’s important to play high-percentage rather than hitting hard. After listening, you’ll better understand what to do in key doubles situations.

In this episode, I interview Jack Broudy from Broudy Tennis. Jack is a tennis player, coach, author, speaker, and inventor. He's coached college national champions, top US juniors, and touring pro players including Sam Querrey, Steve Johnson, and Coco Vandeweghe when they were rising juniors.
Jack has a unique (but incredibly effective) teaching methodology called the Non-Linear Tennis System. He teaches every stroke from this foundational principle so players can learn the serve, groundstrokes, and volleys faster and hit the ball effortlessly. Rather than the typical mechanical teaching style most coaches use, Jack believes the body should be fluid and move together for each shot.
We discuss how he got started in tennis, common doubles strategy mistakes he sees from club players, and technique. Jack shows us how to hit volleys with better depth and pace, as well as problems with the way many 3.0-3.5 level players hit groundstrokes and how to correct it.

Older 40+ players are crafty, have more control, and never miss. Young 18-39 players are fast and hit the ball hard!
This, of course, is an overgeneralization, but it’s helpful to think about how to beat each of these types of doubles teams.
In this episode, I tell a story from college of a teammate who thought smacking overheads from the baseline was a good strategy for him. Our coach taught him that it wasn’t through a clever drill. We’ll use the lesson he learned to figure out how to beat a crafty, consistent, 40+ or 55+ team. Then I’ll talk about strategy for beating younger doubles teams in the 18-39-year-old range who hit with more power.

Find out how I took away an opponent's strength by shifting my position, and how being more aggressive at the net helped my partner hold serve (even though she said she has a "weak serve").
In this episode, I talk about my own recent USTA league doubles matches and strategic adjustments I made to help me win. You'll be able to relate to these stories and use the strategies in your own doubles matches.

In doubles, getting to the net is a winning strategy. But sometimes it pays to play two-back in doubles.
In this episode, I analyze all those questions and more.
Learn the best times to play two-back on the return, including an alternative strategy. I also share a story of when I successfully played two-back on my own serve which I almost never recommend. At the end, I discuss different scenarios of playing two-back vs two-up or one-up and one-back.
This episode definitely requires you to visualize the court a bit, but the two back strategy doesn't get talked about enough so I hope this helps your game.

In this episode, I speak with Christo van Rensburg. He was a part of the #1 doubles team in the world with Paul Annacone and won the 1985 Australian Open Doubles title.
In this conversation, we dive deep into Christo's story including two moments that changed his life. I also ask him how doubles in the '80s and '90s compares to today. After that, we talk a lot about communication on the doubles court between partners, as well as how coaches should be communicating with their students.
We also talk about doubles strategy. Christo makes an argument for the better player to return from the deuce court. I ask him the biggest mistakes he sees club level players making in doubles, and a lot more.

In this episode, I talk about practicing specifically for doubles. We should be practicing the things that will help us improve on the match course. So, how can we create drills and games around that?
I also talk about why our mentality during practice should be different than during a match. We actually want to be making errors in practice. Then, I discuss different drills and games you can do with two or four people. By the end of this episode, you should have a better idea of how you can be more effective with your practice time and improve your doubles game faster.

In this episode, I talk with Cyndy and Dan Lobb. This is a unique episode because you probably don't know Cyndy and Dan from the ATP or WTA tour ;) I wanted to have them on to share their story. They are 3.0 and 3.5 doubles players from Atlanta, Georgia who have gone from losing league matches and feeling "defeated" to winning against those same teams.
How?
They transformed the way they play doubles. During this conversation you'll learn what Cyndy changed that has her opponents now praising her net game, how Dan started helping her hold serve, and what they both have changed about their strategy from the baseline.
