If the financial world were an iceberg, the tip would be our day to day experience at the checkout, what we read in the business press, and what even our own government tells us. The bulk of the financial system, however, is largely hidden, tucked away in offshore bank accounts, secret agreements between top bankers and regulators, and in understandings within the social clubs of the elite. Tonight we have the privilege to be joined by one who has spent time in those circles, but unlike most of them, is willing to share some of the details of their inner-workings. Because of the complex nature of the topic, we take time to go into areas otherwise obscured by arcana, but only with the intent of revealing the who, why, and what the puppetmasters behind some of the bigger events in recent history – including the COVID crisis and subsequent lockdowns – are really planning for us.

With the recent fires in Los Angeles capturing international headlines, with some estimates placing the property damage above that of Hurricane Katrina, America’s previous record holder for natural disasters, discussion is returning to the competency crisis in our elected officials and government services provided by the likes of FEMA, which have been slow to respond and ineffective to act over the past several years. In 2024, when Hurricane Helene slammed into parts of Appalachia leaving entire towns flooded and cut off, officials did little to mitigate the problem – to the point where in some cases government agents were actively obstructing private relief efforts. Tonight we are joined by returning guest Lamprey Milt to discuss his recent article on the floods in Asheville, his time living there, prospects for rebuilding, and lessons learned in light of the recent fires in California.

Born into royalty in 356BC and tutored by none other than Aristotle himself, Alexander the Great was born into power and privilege. While lesser men would have opted for a life of ease and erudition – Alexander set out on a path that would change history forever. From the day he assumed power after witnessing his father’s assassination as a young man to conquering the Persian empire before he turned 30, the King of Macedon brought about long lasting cultural, trade, and military effects on the people of the near and middle east well into the Roman era. Tonight we are delighted to be rejoined by author James LaFond to recount this pivotal era in antiquity and to examine the impact it had on that time as well as implications for today.

Plutarch, who lived in a Greek province during the height of the Roman Empire, is widely regarded for his biographies of great leaders in the ancient world. In his work on Tiberius Gracchus, a Roman politician killed for his advocacy of land reform, Plutarch wrote, “The rich men of the neighborhood contrived to get these lands again into their possession, under other people’s names, and at last would not stick to claim most of them publicly in their own. The poor, who were thus deprived of their farms, were no longer either ready, as they had formerly been, to serve in war or careful in the education of their children; insomuch that in a short time there were comparatively few freemen remaining in all Italy, which swarmed with workhouses full of foreign-born slaves. These the rich men employed in cultivating their ground of which they dispossessed the citizens.” Tonight, in review of the events of 2024, we discuss the many parallels between the American and Roman empires, in particular as it pertains to the use of foreign labor at the expense of its own citizens, and the continual destabilizing effects it has wrought on the people, politics and culture of the broader Western world.

In the history of Western civilization, there have been periods of relative peace, followed by stagnation, war and rebirth. This cycle has repeated multiple times, and is seemingly brought about by inexorable cultural processes. Many have speculated the West is in a period of decline, but signs of a rebirth are not completely absent. Tonight’s guest, Mike from Imperium Press, has written ‘The Cultured Thug Handbook’ – putting forth the notion that to bring us out of the depths of decay, we must enculture our leaders to break free of the stasis of the now, and capture the possibilities of the future by embracing their inner thug – a return to the warrior – a philosopher king.

In the arena of competing ideas of the political right, some have argued for allowing the rot in the system to fall away and collapse, while others have advocated for taking a chainsaw to the problems. Our guest, Mr. Charles Haywood, unambiguously favors the latter. From his vantage point of having worked successfully in the legal and business world, Mr. Haywood lays out his vision for “human flourishing in the post-liberal era” from his writing and podcast at The Worthy House. Today we discuss with him his thoughts on the legal system, our mutual fascination with Elon Musk and his attempt to quell the administrative state, and how populist uprisings can and sometimes do lead to positive political change.

Legend has it that before setting out for the Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914, Ernest Shackleton posted an ad in a London newspaper proclaiming, “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.” If there is a parallel to the audacity of a leader in the 21st century, it has to be Elon Musk. Transforming not only the automotive and energy sectors with behemoth Tesla, artificial intelligence with full self driving, Twitter and now X, but building interplanetary rockets and a constellation of internet satellites, Musk has proven time and time again that what seemed hazardous, with long hours, questionable financials, and to most seemingly impossible – in actuality is very much possible with Musk at the helm. Some have compared him to Steve Jobs of Apple fame, but in many ways Musk has far surpassed him. Tonight we are joined by returning guest Woe from Stone Choir, who used to work at Apple, to try to fathom the depth and breadth of Elon’s many endeavors, and try to understand what it all means in the greater scope of human civilization.

America has a relatively short modern history, often glossed over by historians more interested in the old and ancient world. To author and independent historian James LaFond, however, this has created an opportunity to uncover some of the more fascinating yet often unspoken truths spanning from the history of slavery, combat and sports culture, and the criminal underworld. Tonight James shares his stories of living in what he refers to as Plantation America, and also gives us insight into his writing process and what it takes to truly develop a deep understanding of the myths and truths guiding our ever changing culture.

On December 10th, 1993, Id Software released the video game Doom, unleashing a wave of digital monsters on millions of plasma rifle wielding gamers eagerly awaiting this genre-piercing work of action horror. Considered the Godfather of first-person shooters, the game inspired hundreds of imitators in this category over the years, propelled by advances in graphics cards driving sales of the latest PC hardware by enthusiasts seeking to obliterate their opponents in the new multiplayer concept of ‘deathmatches’ more quickly and in full 3D glory. Computing has come a long way since the early days of Doom’s DOS based experience, going so far as to have playable levels automatically generated by artificial intelligence. But the shockwaves left by Doom’s original programmers, particularly John Carmack and John Romero, are still being felt today, and the gaming industry has arguably not seen a design or a set of designers as groundbreaking as what these pioneers created back in the renegade early days of push-it-to-the-limits PC gaming.

Capitalism, like any large scale socioeconomic system, has had its share of successes and failures. But the story of Enron, which went from the ranks of the Fortune 500 and darling of Wall Street to bankruptcy in a matter of months in late 2001, served as a lowmark for American business culture in terms of corporate greed as the largest bankruptcy to stem from fraud in United States history. Tonight we are joined by Ace Niederhoff from the mean streets of high finance to delve into the who, what, why, and perhaps most importantly, if the failure of Enron was an indictment of capitalism, or was it proof of how efficiently is removes the bad actors when corruption is revealed.

Geography is the study of how people and place interact. In our modern, interconnected world, with globe-spanning supply chains and near-light speed internet, it becomes easy to forget just how critical the land we inhabit has shaped our civilization’s culture, technology, economy, and over time the very people that call these places home. Tonight, we are joined by Dark Enlightenment to survey history’s great civilizations from Eurasia through the Americas, and examine how geography has made or broken countless wars, trade routes, and in general the ability of a people to either thrive or perish.

On the morning of May 20th, 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off from Long Island, New York in a plane he helped design on the first successful solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. 33 hours later, after braving 3,600 miles over ice cold water and bone chilling fog in the North Atlantic, Lindbergh touched down in Paris, France to cheering crowds. Upon his return to the United States, over 4 million people in a jubilant crowd attended his parade, just to get a glimpse of their hero. Like his father before him, Charles saw the devastating effect the First World War had on Europe, and with war clouds returning to the continent by the 1930s, Lindbergh sought to keep America out of the conflict. His movement, called ‘America First’, saw many of the forces behind calls to bring the American arsenal to bear in Europe to have little resemblance to the common people of the country, whom they asked to bear the brunt of the sacrifice, and in citing these forces, brought out a barrage of censorship, criticism and job losses to many of his supporters. This seemingly confirmed Lindbergh’s suspicions of the pernicious motives of the Second World War, and the courage to speak out in many ways paralleled what it took to cross the Atlantic a decade prior. Today we are joined by returning guest Zach Logos to examine the legacy of the ‘America First’ movement and its implications to the modern era, where once again America seems entangled in an endless series of foreign wars that offer little if no benefit to the average American.

As technology has advanced throughout human history, societies have adapted their way of life to try to incorporate the advantages offered while limiting the consequences. The automobile for example freed people from the limited range and unpredictable nature of the horse, but also created a need for traffic safety laws and research into pollution controls. Similarly with biotechnology and genetic engineering, the promise of curing disease motivates many to continue research, but the demonstrated and potential consequences of genetic abnormalities and eugenic warfare make this technology a power that may not be best left to the creative classes and better kept under close scrutiny if allowed at all. Tonight we discuss this topic in the context of Kevin Davies’ work ‘Editing Humanity’ on the CRISPR gene editing technique with the help of returning guest Corey Mahler from the Stone Choir podcast to offer a Christian perspective on this profoundly human topic with its deep moral implications.

The world has rarely seen a time where two powers dominate the entire globe – almost utterly and completely – like in the latter half of the 20th Century with the United States and the Soviet Union, as our guest Thomas777 tonight points out. After the end of the Cold War in 1991, it also became easy to feel like the era of major global conflict was over, and forget just how deadly and potentially catastrophic with nuclear weapons the preceding eras had become. During the post World War II era, with the Axis powers having been thoroughly defeated, the (former) allies, replete with their battle tested armies and massive armaments and industrial bases, aligned against each other into capitalist and communist blocs. With the stakes never before this high, and the entire world hoping to avoid another cataclysmic 100 million dead, the United States began funding think tanks to come up with ways to do this – most notably at the RAND Corporation. During their early years, and up until the height of the Cold War, RAND attracted thousands of famous and highly influential intellects from the fields of physics, mathematics, statistics, economics and more, many of who went on to win Nobel prizes, focusing on war strategy, production planning, and predictive modeling of adversaries using theoretical and computerized simulations. But as the Vietnam War demonstrated the limits of these approaches in entrenched nationalist struggles, and as general sentiment for military research soured, the organization today is a shadow of its former self, and stands amidst a crowded field of beltway adjacent think tanks, going through the white paper motions without demonstrating anything of true note – perhaps like much of the rest of the broader US military establishment.

Serving as emperor of Rome from 161AD to 189AD, Marcus Aurelius was considered the last of the five ‘good emperors’, and oversaw a time of relative peace and prosperity at home while stabilizing the empire’s frontiers abroad. Noted for his modesty and dedication to stoic philosophy, Aurelius’ writings serve as a guidepost for many seeking wisdom on life, rule, and what we leave behind. Tonight we are joined by Zach from Logos Revealed to examine Aurelius’ most famous work, ‘Meditations’, and to explore its lessons for leadership in a corrupt modern world.

Wall Street has famously been a place for young and ambitious people looking to make a career in finance, and has been host to numerous boom and bust phases, whether it be the IPO craze of the late 90s or the mortgage derivative boom in the 2000s. In the 1980s, leveraged buyout (LBO) firms like KKR spearheaded the then largest takeover deal ever in the purchase of RJR Nabisco, as chronicled by the bestselling book ‘Barbarians at the Gate’. As these types of takeovers typically involved large amounts of debt and cost cutting layoffs to pay for the debt, LBOs grew unpopular by the 1990s, eventually leading to the industry rebranding under the Private Equity banner. But despite the name change, cheap interest rates following the 2008 financial crisis led to a massive rise in funds of private equity management by over 1,000 times today over 1980, with perhaps a trillion dollars controlled by the top 30 firms of the likes of Blackstone, KKR, and the Carlyle Group. Tonight we are joined by New Yorker Ace Neiderhoff to give us an insider take on this often misunderstood but tremendously significant industry, and also offer guidance to those seeking to make it in one of the toughest and most competitive cities in the world.

Since its founding in 1976, Apple has been at or near the center of personal computing. Led by legendary founder Steve Jobs, who described the company as lying at the intersection between liberal arts and technology, Apple pioneered the introduction of the graphical user interface, the music player, and the smartphone to everyday people around the world. Since his passing, however, the company, led by former operations manager Tim Cook, has delivered strong unit growth and profit numbers, but has not been able to introduce a revolutionary new product or paradigm in the way we think about the world of information technology. To the question of has the soul of the company left the building permanently, we are joined tonight by returning guest Woe, from the excellent Stone Choir podcast, to share his perspectives as an over 15 year Apple veteran on the company’s place in the culture of Silicon Valley and the broader moral issues in the coming era of artificial intelligence.

Mark Twain once quipped, regarding truth in journalism, that “there are lies, damned lies – and then there are statistics.” Interpretations vary, but a common take away is that people lie to others using fancy numbers. This is almost certainly true – but what is explored with tonight’s guest, statistician and professor William M. Briggs, is the tendency for people to deceive themselves by assigning undue authority to complex mathematical models and their practitioners – and not questioning the assumptions that inevitably go into those models in areas such as climate change and the recent COVID scare. In his books ‘Everything You Believe is Wrong’ and ‘Uncertainty’, Briggs examines many of these commonly held fallacies, and we discuss those findings along with his experience in the academic world to understand the implications it has for doing science in an increasingly non-scientific culture.

Economics today is an institutionalized profession, with academic departments, research grants, and millions of practitioners in the finance and government sectors. In the late 18th and early 19th century, however, economists were not part of any formalized profession, and ranged in background from professors of logic and moral philosophy in the case of Adam Smith to dilettantish journalists with wealthy patrons in the case of Karl Marx. Friedrich List, a former German bureaucrat and eventual entrepreneur emigre to America, saw firsthand the important interplay between government and industry, particularly around protective tariffs for developing a manufacturing sector – serving as a potential “missing link” in the body of thought between the extremes of radical laissez faire free markets and top down centrally planned economies. As the world continues on a path towards de-globalization and increasing polarization, List’s system of National Economics provides a guidebook to many developing and developed economies alike that seek to increase their level of independence and sovereignty.

Vladimir Putin recently won reelection as Russia’s president by a wide margin, making him the country’s longest serving ruler since Josef Stalin. Both men have also uniquely presided over their country’s largest-scale conflicts, throwing support to the argument that economic sanctions placed on countries during war only serve to entrench rather than dislodge their leaders. But the long-term sustainability of a war-style command economy remains less clear, with notable examples of North Korea and arguably the Soviet Union itself raising real concerns of how people can fall behind over time without a relaxing of the central authority. Tonight, we are rejoined by Lance, our frequent military expert and contributor to help us unravel some of the mystery of the military and economic machinations of the Putin regime and how it compares to other stratagems in America and around the world.

Many of us on the disaffected political right got here at one point or another through libertarianism, which appeals to those most usually content with doing their own thing. If 2020 taught us anything, however, with COVID lockdowns, riots, and suspicious elections, the powers that be are not only not content with allowing free choice, but are more than willing to use violence to maintain their power. Tonight, Pete Quinones joins us to share his journey through libertarianism and his assessment of the conservative political project, concluding organized political force may be the only way to protect the personal values many of us hold.

The largest country in Latin America – in terms of population, land mass, and economy – is a crown worn indisputably by Brazil. But the history of this land, spanning four timezones and over five centuries of development, is one marked by tumultuous governance and political conflict, with different crowns worn by monarchs, military dictators, and democratic politicians alike, ruling over a teeming population of millions of former slaves, colonists and wannabe conquistadors. Tonight, we are joined by Lance from Lance’s Legion to help us work out the nuances of this complex and fascinating country, as well as impart some of the potential lessons of managing a large and complex demography with high rates of poverty and crime.

Located at the southern end of South America and comprising much of Patagonia, a region known for its ruggedly beautiful, yet empty expanses, Argentina is a country distant geographically as well as one metaphysically often forgotten. That all changed last year when Javier Milei won election to President and perhaps most notably held a rally wielding a chainsaw, promising to slash government bureaucracy and free up the society in an attempt to revitalize the long-struggling economy, plagued for decades by slow growth, chronic inflation, and currency crises. Tonight, we are joined by returning guest Lynn Lockhart, who has family from the land of silver, to help us understand more about Argetina’s history and colorful new president, as well as the implications for radical reform against incumbent systems more broadly.

Tonight we discuss some of this past year’s highlights, starting with the run on Silicon Valley Bank and near repeat of the 2008 financial crisis. We then cover the geopolitical implications of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine mixed in with the attacks in Israel, crisis at the border, and the changing world of technology as AI continues to touch more of our everyday lives. As a bonus, we are excited to welcome back longtime co-hosts Nick and Hank to help us round out the year, and to give us some perspective as what this year may yet bring.

In pagan Germany sometime in the 8th century, legend has it that a Christian monk, who would later become known as Saint Boniface, gathered a tribe of non-believers around him and their most sacred tree. Thought to incite a vengeful bolt of lightning from Thor himself if cut down, Boniface, in front of all who could see, felled the tree with a single chop of the axe, aided by a gust of wind seemingly from another divinity, and no lightning. In that moment, the onlookers were converted to Christianity. Tonight, we are joined by the author of ‘The Boniface Option’, Pastor Andrew, to explore why the analogy of a bold and visceral attack against false idols may be fitting for addressing the troubles of our “trashworld” times.

The world has never lacked for a troubling incident or cause for concern. But there are times when the drumbeats reach a crescendo, and in the case of war, the potential for large scale conflict seems to rise when a hegemon begins declining, and rival powers see their opportunity to increase their share. Ray Dalio, having made his success running the world’s largest global macro hedge fund and authoring several books on the major forces shaping world history, recently raised his estimate on the chance of World War III occurring in the next two years from 35% to 50%. Given how high the stakes are in that outcome, those are not the most encouraging odds. Tonight, we are joined by returning guest Lance to discuss the recent conflicts in the Middle and Near East, as well as the potential for such in the Far East and the general escalation amongst the nuclear armed superpowers.

Even before humans developed metal tools, stonework, jewelry and mineral wealth have been an integral part in human society. With the advent of the industrial revolution, with coal being exploited as a primary energy source for heating and locomotion, even more minerals ranging from copper to iron to aluminum became accessible on a scale never before seen. Now, with fossil fuels such as coal and oil becoming more difficult to source and pressure from environmental concerns causing a search for greener energy, a new frontier in mining for the green economy, ranging from lithium to cobalt, has opened, raising new challenges and opportunities in the never ending search for wealth from beneath.

The world is a complex place, filled with good and evil – and almost everything in between. The challenge of navigating this is that we are all tempted by something that we want, but ultimately will be our undoing. Christians frame this battle between God and Satan, with humans caught in the struggle to choose. What makes this even more difficult is it is not simply a matter of choice, but also of action. To avoid sin, we must resist its lure, but most, if not all, can without help. This is where faith provides solace, and in the final judgement, salvation. Tonight we are joined by two gentleman who have dedicated the search for what is good in the form of the excellent Stone Choir podcast, which explores many of these fundamental issues, and provides a guide to those who have sought a light in these dark times.

But of that land, nearly half is exclusive to roads and parking structures in some urban areas. This fact, obviously a consequence of the prevalence of the automobile, illustrates the importance of transportation, a key pillar to modern civilization. Connecting people, goods and services has always been important, but as the cost of movement has dropped and the speed has increased, the value of the network has only grown, which Metcalfe defined as proportional to the square of the nodes, or in this case, destinations. As technology pushes us farther and more safely, the era of globalization may very well extend beyond the globe and into the stars.

Viewed as a microcosm of Manifest Destiny beyond the confines of the geographical limits of the continental United States, the annexation of the Hawaiian Islands by the US in the late 19th century marked the beginning of what we now consider the global American Empire. To the Hawaiian peoples, it was a clearly just as if not moreso a historic moment, albeit done for reasons of pragmatic acceptance of their minor power relationship in an ocean surrounded by much larger political and economic forces. The Hawaiian Islands, given their incredible strategic military location in the middle of the Pacific, would inevitably come under the sway of one of the surrounding powers. It was almost always less a question of if, but rather a question of when – and how.

The English word ‘bank’ meaning a depository and lending institution, derives from the Italian word ‘banca’, or ‘bench.’ This belies the origins of modern finance in Renaissance Italy, where deals initially struck at coffee house bench evolved into the great trading and banking houses of the Medicis, where double-entry book keeping enabled the matching of debtors with creditors that spurred the growth of industrial Europe over the coming centuries. Today, with daily capital flows measured in the trillions of dollars enabled by high-speed fiber optics and a global communications network, major decisions happen much more quickly, and because of the levered nature of fractional reserve finance, regional concern can magnify into global contagion faster than an actual pandemic. In the case of last weekend, where Silicon Valley Bank, one of the top-30 global banks went into receivership, the political institutions of the United States were caught off guard, and in an attempt to quell further concerns, went into overdrive this week as the Federal Reserve discount window was opened guaranteeing the assets of all major banks. Not to be outdone, the Swiss National Bank just intervened in the takeover of Credit Suisse, a century and half years old institution, to further halt panic in European markets. Memories of the 2008 financial crisis are on everyone’s mind, and the ripple effects of these events are surely to continue throughout the year.

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, has written several books on the world of investing and the economy in general based on his years of experience as manager of the world’s largest hedge fund. In the latest of his ‘Principles’ series, Dalio applies his quantitative approach of macro investing to analyzing countries, seeking to identify the factors that lead to strength such as education and work ethic, as well as lagging indicators such as a reserve currency that allow a country to spend beyond its means but ultimately presage a fall from dominance. Notably, Dalio sees China’s rise to the top of global power as likely, with America, while ahead, slowly declining. Tonight we debate the merits of his analysis, as well as the overall validity of a global macroeconomic approach that overlooks key factors such as demographics in forecasting long term power status.

Stagflation. Fuel Prices. Shortages. Political Turmoil. War in Europe. Roe V. Wade. Crypto Collapse. Counter-counter culture. Most years have one or two seminal, defining events that set the societal zeitgeist, but in 2022 so many events vied for attention that most people had to take time not only to revaluate what it means for the future, but also simply how to filter out the signal from the noise. Tonight we dive into the year, starting with the Ukrainian conflict, and ending with what might be emerging as an escalating one in Mexico, but in between cover the economic and cultural shakeups that continue to leave shockwaves into 2023.

The exchange of goods and services has existed since the earliest forms of civilization, from simple barter arrangements at the local town square to Phoenician traders navigating the Mediterranean with goods from Europe and North Africa. Today, however, the scope of exchange is truly massive, with online commerce coming to dominate nearly all segments of retail, and the scale encompassing transoceanic trade routes totaling 11 billion tons in maritime cargoes in 2021. Underpinning all this lies an extremely complex web of producers, shippers, pipelines, warehouses, and commodities traders that include the massive concerns such as Koch Industries in energy and Glencore in metals, with over 100,000 employees each. Billions of dollars have been made and lost in commodities futures, and as volatility continues to disrupt prices of everyday items from gasoline to grain, the trend of ever tighter global trade integration seen since the end of the Cold War may start to unravel as regional blocks choose to have closer and more reliable supply chains.

Centered at the heart of Europe, Germany has long played a critical role in modern European political economics. As the Cold War superpowers emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War, partitioning of Germany into East and West left a permanent scar on the people as their own culture and autonomy was subordinated to the ideologies of market-driven capitalism and centrally planned communism. In 1989, when the borders between East and West Germany were opened in a series of surprise events, the psychological and cultural walls that separated the German people were slower to go down than the physical barriers. Today, as a reunified Germany nears its 30th anniversary, Cold War politics seem to remain as the United States heavily influences the direction of NATO and the EU, resisting the development of positive relations between Germany and Russia and a general rise of German leadership in the world.

“We do not demand for our own people any more than the basic human rights which we would extend to every nation, people and tribe on this planet: the right to preserve their own territory, traditions and ethnic identity. Following the Civil War, the notion of unity in the United States was more than just wishful thinking. As Reconstruction came to an informal close in the 1870s, the excesses of the Gilded Age with the increasing power of the banking and industrial classes created the political climate for the Progressive Era in the 1890s. Running on the platform of scientific management, temperance, anti-corruption, and reforms in treatment of workers and women, progressive politicians sought to address some of the problems of a rapidly urbanizing society and consolidate the diverse populations and territories of the Union. Industrialists, for their part, began sponsoring universities and academic professions such as economics in an attempt to steer public discourse and pass legislation such as the Sherman Antitrust Act which while on the surface decreased the power of the big business but in effect allowed it to create more indirect cartels with backdoor relationships with the very government which ostensibly sought to control it.

— Timeline –1865 – The Civil War ends with a total victory by the Union, resulting in national empowerment of the American Northeast.

1883 – The Pendleton CIvil Service Act is passed, creating the foundations for the modern bureaucratic institutions that exist within the American federal government.

1885 – The American Economics Association (AEA) is established, thereby strengthening the economics profession in the United States. Professional economists begin to network and attain jobs in the American government.

1887 – The Interstate Commerce Act is passed, allowing the government to regulate nearly all cross-border economic activity across the USA.

1890 – The Sherman-Antitrust Act is passed. American corporate trusts and horizontally-integrated firms are placed under direct political pressure, although economic fallout is counter-intuitive and strengthens the oligarchic class.

1898 – The Spanish-American War swiftly begins and ends, resulting in the codification of progressive foreign policy in military adventurism, nominally known as ‘humanitarian interventionism’.

1901 – The Industrial Commission, established in 1898, delivers a report to Theodore Roosevelt detailing the interplay between key corporate monopolies/trusts and capital market manipulation.

1906 – Meat and drug inspection becomes the responsibility of the Federal Government.

1913 – The tenor of American society irrevocably changed with the passing of the 16th and 17th Amendments. These allowed for direct, progressive scales of taxation on personal income, and the direct elections of American Senators by the populaces of the constituent states.

1920 – After decades of Progressive efforts through legal, cultural and academic institutions, women are granted the right to vote and Prohibition is ratified by the US Congress. Majority of the American population now lives in urban areas, and United States has the largest, most complex economy in the world.

Marshaling a people to a common cause is never an easy task. In the case of the Jews, who have through history been spread throughout the world into highly segregated communities, in the late 1800s the movements of world Communism and nationalist Zionism vied for mindshare among the Jewish diaspora. After the death of Theodor Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism, in 1904, Zeev Jabotinsky came to prominence as the leader of Revisionist Zionism and the chief proponent of the right and duty of return for international Jewry to the land of Palestine. Although he died in 1940 before the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, his ideas went on to form the basis for much of the political theory behind the Israeli government and in particular the modern political party of the Likud.

Myth is a fundamental part of what binds and propels a nation forwards towards a shared goal, and in the case of Israel and the surrounding Arab states following the end of the British Mandate in 1948, the mythology of David versus Goliath certainly played to the Israelis’ advantage in mustering national solidarity against the armies of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. In the Six-Day War in 1967, however, what may have appeared to be superior force at least numerically on the Arab side quickly turned into a rout as the Israelis swiftly destroyed their opponents’ armies. In Egypt in particular, the Arab nationalist leader Gamal Nasser suffered a major blow to his prestige as a military commander, and his myth as a greater Arab leader was never able to recover.
