The advertising of Rainier Beer spawned many cult classic commercials in the Northwest. Our guests got into the idea of documenting the ads after collecting Rainier Beer swag for their bar and asking the question where can we get the original film of the commercials?
The Petersons describe the origin of the Rainier Room at the bar, after they filled it with all of the memorabilia they could find relating to Rainier Beer. The room has a TV running all of the ads on a loop, and quickly became a fan favorite.
The team described the long adventure to locating the original film of the commercials. From cold calling people who might have been involved, to tracking down agencies, to the final fortuitous encounter with the Washington State Historical Society.
Recorded on location and includes several audio clips from Rainier ads.

Scott talks with Brooks Smothers, host of the RV Out West podcast which discusses RV travel in Washington State. Brooks describes many of the adventures that led him to get a trailer and start his podcast.
Brooks lived in Washington until the age of twenty-five when he tried living in other parts of the country, including the Virgin Islands, and California Bay Area. He returned to Washington in 2010 with his wife and started a family.
Brooks talks about enjoying football when the Seahawks played the Philadelphia Eagles (his wife is from Philly) and growing up in a camping family both tent camping and backpacking. Scott asks about the Big Journey, shipping a VW camper to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Brooks then describes what brought him to starting the RV Out West podcast and explains the goal of the podcast.

Seattle area author Brad Holden talking about his latest book Lost Roadhouses of Seattle. Brad co-wrote the book with Peter Blecha.
Brad is an Author. Historian. Finder of Old Things.
During our conversation we talk about Brad's fascination with Seattle's seedy past. Brad has written three books and he calls them his trilogy.
- Lost Roadhouses of Seattle: Prohibition came early to Washington State--in 1916--and kicked off an unforgettable era of nightlife.
- Seattle Mystic Alfred M. Hubbard: Inventor, Bootlegger, & Psychedelic Pioneer: Perpetual motion machines, booklegging, first radio station in Seattle and LSD.
- Seattle Prohibition: Bootleggers, Rumrunners, & Graft in the Queen City: The story of prohibition in Seattle. The personalities, the exploits, and the adventures.
All three books are well researched and tell the story of Seattle's battle with booze during the 1920's Brad has an ability to make the history come alive. All three books are page turners.
Brad is also one of the hosts of the podcast Dim Lights & Stiff Drinks. The podcast talks abou the history of the eccentric collection of dive bars, historic taverns, and interesting drinking establishments in the Seattle, WA area. Each episode is recorded in the bar featured in the episode. Highly entertaining and informative.
Listen as Brad shares his backstory and how history has always been important to him. One enjoyable tidbit is the story of when Brad saw his book in a store for the first time.

This brother and sister duo based in Curlew Washington. Surrounded by music their entire lives these two young musicians are talented and entertaining.

Meet Petosa Accordions Since 1922 this family owned business has been making world class accordions.
I was able to sit down with Joe Petosa Jr. (3rd generation), Joey Petosa (4th generation) and Gabe Hall-Rodriguez at the Petosa Accordions showroom. We were surrounded by dozens of historic accordions the enviroment was amazing.
Knowing next to nothing about accordions I ask a ton of questions about the history of the instrument, how the accordion works, and much more. The guys were patient with me and it really shows how passionate they are about making world class instruments and providing top shelf training and support to everyone who purchases a Petosa Accordion.
This episode was a blast to record and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did.

Micah has been a newspaper reporter and editor for over 20 years in Washington State. We talk about how the newspaper industry has changed, Vancouver, and of course sports!
I find it interesting to learn about how the media landscape is changing rapidly, especially when it comes to sports.
One way the Columbian has adjusted is to go hyper-local with their news coverage. Focusing on high school sports, and minor league sports teams like the Ridgefield Raptors.

Chris retired from CWU in 2021 after 20 year career in the music department.
We learn about Chris's path to becoming a music educator by completing his undergrad at Central going off to teach and then coming back to Central to obtain a Masters Degree.

Oly Town Artesians FC owner Ryan Perkins is my guest for this episode.
Originally founded in 2014 Ryan and his partners purchased the club in 2021. In 2022 Oly Town Artesians mens team joined the USL League 2 as an expansion team in the Northwest Division. The USL2 is a national pre-professional league with 115 teams.
Ryan shares with us his background as a soccer player and football player in high school. Ultimately he was offered a scholarship the University of Washington to play football. Ryan was the placekicker for the Huskies in 2007 and 2008.
Find out how Oly Town has both indoor and outdoor teams for both men and women. Ryan shares with us how the club is positioned to develop players and ultimately help them turn professional.

Mark Pickerel is our guest for this episode. Mark was the original drummer of the band Screaming Trees. Originally from Ellensburg Screaming Trees were one of the first bands to be signed to a major label during the "grunge era" The episode was recorded in the recording studio where the first Screaming Trees album was recorded.
Mark is an amazing story teller and the episode is full of stories from his time playing drums. Currently Mark is performing with his band Pickerel and the Peyote 3 around the Northwest.

Paige Anderson Executive Director of the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team (DERT) is my guest for this episode.
DERT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Deschutes Watershed. DERT began organizing in 2009 and became a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2011. In 2020, DERT became an affiliate of Puget Soundkeeper Alliance and a member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance.
Paige explains why the estuary is important and how DERT is working with various stakeholders to insure that the watershed is restored and returned to a healthy balance.

Troy Moss is our guest for this episode. This is his second time on the show.
Troy is an amateur historian who has had a love of history since he was a little kid. Today Troy spends a lot of his free time researching Washington State history. Our episode today is focused on the Puget Sound Indian War of 1855-1856.
Troy has a passion for maps especially old maps. We chat about maps of Washington both Washington Territory and Washington State. Using maps Troy and his friend Jerry Kenyon recreated William Tolmie's 1833 expedition from Fort Nisqually to Mt Rainier you can listen to Troy and Jerry talk about the journey on episode 117,Troy provides background on the Native American tribes and how they interacted with the original traders that began arriving in the Puget Sound in the 1700's By the 1850's the
settlers were having issues with the Native Americans and in the Puget Sound this came to a boil in 1855.
Troy provides a lot of information in a easy going manner and makes history fun and entertaining. Perhaps he should of been a history teacher.

Andrew Byers Head Cider Maker for Finnriver Farm & Cider is our guest for this episode.
Finnriver Farm & Cider is located in Chimacum Washington and has been making cider since 2010.
Andrew shares his story of how he arrived at Finnriver. Growing up in California, attended culinary school, working in restaurants, then going to college. You need to hear the reason why. After college working and learning the craft of making cider in New York. Andrew ultimately arrived at Finnriver Farms in 2013.
Andrew makes the statement that it smells good in Chimacum. He loves the smell of the water.
We learn the origin story of Finnriver and how cider has been integral to helping the farm survive financially and to build community. Finnriver is now a rural destination location. You can come and enjoy a cider on the lawn while listening to music.

Tara explains how she and her two kids can be ready to go on a moments notice and be out on a overnight or weekend trip without a lot of effort. One interesting fact is the HC1 can be pulled by almost any vehicle. Even a Mini Cooper! The modular interior can be reconfigured to provide amazing flexibility. I am very intrigued by the options available.

John and his wife Karen have an interesting history with alcohol. John's great grandfather may or may not of blown up part of his home "brewing beer". You need to hear all of the story. Karen's grandmother was known for her Bathtub Gin. Indeed they had outlaws in the Family.
We learn how the Wohlfert's navigated many challenges to open Wohlfert Craft Distilling. County, State, and Federal regulations can be daunting and in this case they indeed where. They continued moving forward and in 2021 they were able to open the doors.

We recorded this episode sitting outside at SweetRiver Bakery in Pateros Washington under a metal roof while it was raining. We call that ambiance.
Brittany grew up in a home where music and the arts were encouraged. She found that she loved songwriting by taking a songwriting class in high school. Since her early efforts she has gone on to record and release 5 albums. She considers her music Folk Americana.
We are able to listen as Brittany performs two of her songs. Golden Hour and Your Time on The Road.
During her career Brittany has played at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and has opened for Three Dog Night in New York City. When Brittany had the opportunity to open for Three Dog Night she did know who they were. (ah kids)
Brittany was a wonderful person to share a rainy afternoon with while chatting about music, Washington, traveling, and more.

We start the episode talking about Tieton that magical place in Central Washington that so many of our guests seem to be involved with in some manner. Paul's story about Tieton is great!
We talk about the mechanics of how a non-profit art gallery can survive in our current world. Paul talks about how METHOD Gallery came into existence and how it is able to navigate the ever-changing currents of fund raising.
We learn that METHOD focuses on artistic processes and is a mode for gathering diverse artists together and offering them a means to exhibit their work to the public in a professional gallery setting. METHOD is a conduit for reciprocity and exchange, for developing relationships with other artists and organizations, locally, nationally, and internationally. Exhibiting artists are NEVER charged exhibition or operational fees and are provided the space free of charge.In addition to METHOD Gallery Paul runs Project 106. The space is approximately 4,000 sq ft and is home to seven studios including METHOD Gallery. Project-106 is open each first Thursday of the month for the Pioneer Square Art Walk from 5:00-9:00pm (individual open studio times may vary).

Rob Neyer commissioner of the West Coast League joins the show to talk summer baseball in Washington state.
Rob tells us about the West Coast League which now has 16 teams including seven in Washington state. The teams in Washington are based in Port Angeles, Bellingham, Longview, Richfield, Wenatchee, Yakima and Walla Walla.
West Coast League is a summer collegiate league where players from various colleges around the United States come together and experience Playing baseball in the same format as they would in the minor leagues or major leagues.

Kevin the Berner, a virtual therapy dog, is our guest for this episode, well, his owner/ translator Diana is! Through social media, Kevin has provided comfort to over 80-thousand people online. Wanting to have a therapy dog to make a difference in other people’s lives, Diana began taking Kevin to youth groups and assisted care facilities.
During his time working with people at the care facilities, Kevin began to develop a fear of new people. Quick thinking Diana decided to begin an Instagram page for him to provide comfort for new people online, lessening his fear. Over the years they have been sharing the daily fun, adventures, dog friendly stays and hikes, making an impact virtually.
This is a light-hearted episode where we dive more into what it means to be a dog owner, how to get outdoors more with your four-legged friend, and what it truly means to make a difference.

For episode 165 of Exploring Washington State, we sat down with Phillippe Bishop. Phillippe is the co-owner of Alpine Fire Cider, a local cider located in Port Townsend, Washington that enjoys a climate of mild summers and foggy falls, adding to the apple trees flavor.
Phillippe tells us stories of how the cidery first began in 2003 where he was boots on the ground helping plant the first orchard, moving boulders out of the tractors way, and why he loves what he does so much.
His parents are also co-owners, a high school sweetheart couple that fell in love with not only each other, but with cider. after trying cider in Canada and wondering if it couldn’t be done better.
From learning about the orchard that is just shy of 1,000 trees (and how it used to be a swampy forest), to which apples they use and why, Phillippe is a great guest and a great resource to learn more about cider making from!

Mónica Guzmán is a woman that is fueled by curiosity and driven by engaging conversations.
Guzmán, author of I Never Thought Of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times, talks about the stories and interactions that led her to write a book.
Guzmán, transparently left leaning, was raised by two Mexican immigrants that voted for Trump. That is a phrase that leaves many of her colleagues, and friends speechless but it has never changed the love she has for her parents.
Her goal was to dive into the “why?” Why did they vote for Trump? Throughout her journey of navigating engaging conversations about the toughest issues facing our country, Guzmán was able to share solutions to some of the biggest problems that are polarizing America.

Everett Fitzhugh is my guest for this episode.
Everett is the Seattle Kraken first radio play by play announcer. We chat about his journey to the NHL. Everett had a goal of being in the NHL by 40. He made it with seven year to spare!
Growing up in Detroit Everett began following the Detroit Red Wings and the Edmonton Oilers. He attended Bowling Green University and became a play by play announcer. After college Everett worked for the USHL, The Youngstown Phantoms, and the Cincinnati Cyclones.
When hired Everett became the first Black team broadcaster in NHL history. In February 2022 Everett and JT Brown became the NHL's first all Black broadcast duo.
Everett and his wife have embraced Seattle and we are enjoying getting to know the city and the area. Of course I ask about coffee and we talk about Cincinnati style chili (spoiler he's not a fan)
This was a fun conversation and if you're not a Hockey fan you will be after listening to this episode. Everett is passionate about Hockey and is a great ambassador for both the sport and the Seattle Kraken.

Matt T Wood is my guest for this episode. Matt is the founder of Double Dagger Studio is an independent game development studio from Seattle, Washington.
Matt began designing games professionally in 1997 starting at 3D Realms' Later Matt worked at Valve. He has worked on such epic titles Duke Nukem Forever, Max Payne, Half Life 2, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
After leaving Valve Matt opened Double Dagger Studios as an independent studio. Matt and his team are working on their first game Little Kitty, Big City. The game will be a fun filled romp where you play as a curious cat who is exploring a big city.
You need to hear how Matt arrived at his first job in Texas. It is quite the entertaining story.

Brooke Lizotte is my guest for this episode.
Brooke is a keyboard player with a resume too long to share here. One Sunday afternoon I sat down with Brooke in a recording studio in Seattle.
I was introduced to Brooke by Raymond Hayden. Ray shared with me that Brooke is one of his mentors and that I would find him to be an enjoyable guest to have on the show. Ray really missed the mark. Brooke is perhaps one of the most enjoyable people I have ever had the chance to interview.
Brooke started taking piano lessons at a young age. Throughout school Brooke was always enjoying playing piano and performed in a number of bands and productions. He attended Green River College where he performed with the schools award winning jazz band.
After college Brooke played in many bands in the greater Seattle area eventually his bands opened for national acts such as Bob Marley, The Tubes, Bootsy Collins, The Ohio Players and many more.... I am purposely leaving names off the list, you have to listen to find out more.
Brooke moved to LA to continue his musical journey working in the movie and tv industry. He also opened a coffee shop in LA . The stories from the coffee shop are must listen stories.
Eventually Brooke ended up in Europe and continued his musical career. Family brought him back to Seattle where he is now living again.
For over 200 days straight Brooke has performed live on Facebook from the recording studio he oversees. These Morning Rendezvous shows often go for over an hour and attract an audience from around the world.

Lewis Rudd cofounder of Ezell's Famous Chicken is our guest for this episode.
Ezell's Famous Chicken opened their first location in February 1984. 38 years later there are 18 locations in Washington and Oregon. Serving always fresh top quality chicken and their famous sides and desserts made fresh daily in each location.
Lewis shares stories about how Ezell's was started with one location across the street from Garfield High School in Seattle. We hear about how The Seattle Seahawks and the SuperSonics both had Ezell's Chicken as their box lunches when they were traveling to their next away game.
Oprah Winfrey said that Ezell's chicken was her favorite. Lewis tells the story of how Oprah found out about Ezell's and how they travelled to Chicago to make her favorite food for her birthday.
We hear how Ezell's gives back to the community. Giving back is a core value to the company. During the pandemic Ezell's delivered over 5,000 meals to front line health workers. With Rudd's R.U.B.B. Initiative (Raising Up Black Businesses) 20 Black owned businesses will receive no strings attached business grants.

James Donaldson is our guest for this episode.
James was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979 after a 4 year career at Washington State University. James played 20 years in professional Basketball.
After retiring James has been a successful business owner, tireless volunteer, and much more. During our conversation James shares stories from his time in the NBA, and from his in volunteer work across Washington State.
After a major health setback James dealt with significant depression and had thoughts of suicide. He was able to recover by building a team around him to help provide structure and support. James was able to draw from his sports career and saw the power in teamwork. After months of hard work James was able to realize it was better to hang in there.
James has created a non-profit foundation Your Gift of Life Foundation that is a voice to an advocate and voice for mental health and suicide prevention. The foundations objectives are.
- To Raise Awareness About Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
- To Raise Money to Contribute to Like-Minded and Like-Hearted Efforts
- To Provide Scholarships to Students of Color and International Students Going Into the Mental Health Field. And also for continuing education purposes as well.
- To Have James on an Ongoing Basis, Speaking About Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Issues.

Amanda Milholland is our guest on this episode.
Amanda is the Market Manager/Director of the Jefferson County Farmers Markets. Jefferson County has two farmers markets one in Port Townsend and one in Chimacum.
The Port Townsend farmer market is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Amanda shares with us that some of the vendors have been at the market for 30 years. Talk about longevity. We find out some of the ways the Port Townsend Farmers Market has grown over the course of the past 30 years. Currently the hours of operation for the Port Townsend market are Saturdays APRIL 2-DECEMBER 17, 9AM TO 2PM. The market is located at 650 Tyler Street, from Tyler and Lawrence Streets to Tyler and Clay Streets.
The Chimacum Farmers Market was first started in 2008. Currently the market is in operation Sundays, June-October from 10 am to 2 pm. The market is located within walking distance of the actual farms of some of the vendors. You will be so close to the source of your food you can walk to the farm from the market! The market is located at 9122 Rhody Drive, Chimacum WA. This is the only four way stop in Chimacum so it is super easy to find.
During our conversation we chat about the distinct personalities of the two markets and how they both serve their communities. Amanda explains how the markets provide services to help their neighbors in need by accepting EBT, WIC and providing matching funds to help make the funds go farther.
We learn about the BIPOC Start-Up Business Fund. The fund is intended to help reduce some of the barriers that may impact the inclusion of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in their markets. Through the fund, JCFM provides small grants to new BIPOC-owned farmers market businesses to support them during their first market season in acquiring some of the materials and permits needed for market participation.

Eric Phillips Chief Commercial Officer of Schilling Hard Cider joins us for this episode.
Eric tells us the story of Schilling Hard Cider. Schilling is the largest Cider producer in Washington State. Schilling opened in 2013 and currently is in a 36,000 sq ft manufacturing space and will be adding an additional 90,000 sq ft of manufacturing space.
The original Schilling Ciders were a dry hopped cider. They also had a Ginger Cider, and and Oak Aged Cider. Since then they have expanded to having over a dozen different flavors with more on the way.
You know I love coffee! you have to hear the story of Grumpy Bear a nitro cold brew coffee cider! To me this sounds amazing! Alas, Schilling no longer makes the cider.......
Schilling Hard Cider was the first to can cider on the west coast. They have made the decision to sell in can vs. bottle for many reasons. Eric shares the reasoning during our conversation.
Currently Schilling has two tap houses open. One in Seattle and one in Portland. The tap houses provide a great way for the company to test products to see how the market will react.
Schilling also makes Hard Yerba Mate named Wavelike and has three flavors Mango, Lemon-Lime, and Guava.

Jordan Boldt of the Vancouver Farmers Market is our guest for this episode. Jordan has been the Executive Director for the market since 2010.
The Vancouver Farmers Market is a non-profit organization with the focus of being a business incubator, providing an open safe community space, and serving the at-need population in the Vancouver Washington area. The market opened for business in 1990. The market can have upwards of 120 spaces during the peak market season.
Jordan shares how a typical market day unfolds. Starting with market staff showing up at 5:30am on Saturday to begin the process of setting up the area for the vendors to arrive. Vendors begin showing up and some of the booths can take 3 to 4 hours to setup. The market opens up to the public at 9am and closes at 3pm. The market has security to keep an eye on the market during Saturday evening so that the vendors do not have to tear down and can reduce their setup time on Sunday. After the market closes on Sunday the team cleans up, sweeps etc. and is done around 7pm. Staff can put in up to 20 to 24 hours in a weekend!
We talk about a wide ranging topics related to how a farmers market is run and this episode is full of information and was quite enlightening to me. We talk about the vendors and what trends Jordan is seeing in the market.
Covid has changed the market and we discuss how the market has adapted and found creative ways to serve their community.

Erika has had an interesting career. Originally moving to the Seattle area for a job in the tech industry. Erika has fallen for the beauty of the region and is an avid hiker and climber of the many peaks in the Cascades. This lead to her role at The Seattle Backpackers Magazine where she was the Director of Content and Editor in Chief.
Erika fell in love with Nepal during a visit with and has published two books about her journeys in Nepal.

Andrew Hughes Seattle area high altitude athlete is our guest for this episode.
Growing up in Poulsbo Andrew grew up playing outside and enjoying nature. He also grew up with Mount Rainier visible to him on a regular (remember we have clouds here) basis. Life has a way of happening and it was not until Andrew was in his 30's that Mount Rainier would be a major player in Andrews life.
Climbing Mount Rainier helped open Andrew to a world of challenges and opportunities. He has now climbed the highest peaks on every single continent! In 2022 he will be going to the north pole on an expedition. Climbing, hiking, and high altitude athletic activities are now an iintegral part of Andrew's life
During our conversation Andrew shares stories about some of his climbs. How he purposed to his finance from the summit of Mount Everest! How climbing, and exploring can help raise awareness of Human Rights, Conservation, and Environmental issue. We also find out how coffee can be considered self care when climbing mountains!

Sidney Wayne is our guest for this episode of the Exploring Washington State Podcast. Sidney is a Seattle are DJ, artist, and soon to be club owner in the Sodo District.
Sidney grew up in Tacoma and we start our conversation off sharing some overlapping history of our youth. Sidney shares a great story about a cassette recorder and an Earth Wind and Fire concert. Years later Earth Wind and Fire are the subject of some other stories for Sidney.
We continue on talking about some of the bands Sidney performed with in the Seattle area. We talk about his DJ career. He also shares a time he was on state with "The Time".... not quite what you might think.
Sidney is also an artist who paints as way to express himself. We talk about his painting how he began to use paint and canvas as a way to take better care of himself.
The SODO district will have a club in the future. Tyler St. Gardens is a project that Sidney is working on that will be an all inclusive club where all are welcome.

Sean Niles otherwise known as The Fat Pastor joins the show for this episode.
Growing up in the Yakima are Sean was drawn to food at an early age. Spending Thanksgiving Day helping his dad in the kitchen is one of his most cherished memories.
After moving away and living on the east coast and in Hawaii Sean and family moved back to Yakima. Sean ultimately ended up auditioning and appearing on the MasterChef TV show. After his time on the show the inspiration and motivation to bring food the public became too strong to resist. Fat Pastor Productions was born. Fat Pastor Productions, is a multi-faceted culinary collaboration, aimed at making a difference in the Yakima Valley and around the world, through food.

Don Poffenroth is our guest for this episode.
Don launched Dryfly in 2007 and Dryfly was the first distillery to open in Washington State since prohibition.
Our conversation took place in the event area of Dryfly's new distillery location. The 24,000 Sq Ft location will allow Don and his team to move than 10x production over the next several months. The new location will feature a tasting room, full-service restaurant, corporate offices, and an event space.
Don shares the story of Dryfly and how it still manages to locally source ingredients for their award winning spirits. Don shares his journey as a distiller and how the company has adapted through the years. Can you imagine opening a distillery and leaving your corporate life behind? Don did just that.
Did you know that canned cocktails are a thing? I must admit that this trend is one that I have not explored. Don shares how he expects his "On the Fly" cocktails to continue to grow and be available in more and more locations throughout Washington State and the rest of the country.

Tom Marriott is our guest for this episode. Tom is Jazz Musician on a mission, to bring a sense of community to the Jazz music scene in Seattle.
Tom has started the Seattle Jazz Fellowship. A non-profit dedicated to providing mentorship to young aspiring talent. By working alongside experienced music veterans. The goal is a five day a week venue that will allow musicians to work together to pay their dues, learn the ropes, and develop their musical craftsmanship.
Currently The Seattle Jazz Fellowship is hosting Fellowship Wednesdays at Vermillion on Capitol Hill. Find out about the album listening sessions hosted by Artist in Residence Julian Priester. After the listening and social hour you will be treated to a showcase of two of the Seattle areas top jazz artists.
Tom shares his musical journey from growing up with a dad who was a radio DJ to going to Garfield High School and then the University of Washington. After graduation Tom went on tour with Maynard Ferguson. Eventually Tom settled back in Seattle where he is has produced 13 albums as a band leader.

Cody is responsible for Kitsap County Community Development - Business Partners & Corporate Sponsors. He is responsible for helping Coffee Oasis work with local businesses via fund raising and grant writing.

Our guest for this episode is Robert Stewart. Robert is a long time Seattle musician.
We start out talking about Robert's band in the 1980's Paisley Sin. Playing around Seattle at some of the iconic venues of the era. Robert found himself watching some of the local R&B and Funk bands. Noticing that they were ALWAYS working he began to gravitate to the R&B scene.
Since the Turn of the century Robert has made his living as a full time musician. We chat about the vow of poverty a musician takes 😀 and more during our conversation.
Robert is a member of The Fiasco. The Fiasco happened by accident. No rehearsal. No discussion. Robert Stewart was playing a weekly solo gig at the Paragon in Seattle, playing his songs and throwing in old soul covers. Cameron Williams came by one night with a djembe drum and started playing like he had always been there. A few months later, Keith Wright showed up with an acoustic guitar and a pedal board and he, too, seamlessly joined the fray...As a solo performer Robert has released multiple albums and is planning a record release party for his latest SPRING 21: ME, MY DOG & A BEER.

Every year Washington State participates in the Great ShakeOut. On October 21, 2021 at 10:21AM you can join people across the world and participate in your own ShakeOut Drill. Over 1 million Washington residents have registered to participate in the earthquake and tsunami drill. In this episode you will learn why you need to:
Drop, Cover, and Hold during an earthquake.
Brian provides us with a lot of information on how earthquakes happen and how Washington State could be impacted. We also talk volcanos as Brian is a fan of volcanos. Did you know that Washington State is home to 2 of the top 3 most monitored volcanos in the U.S? Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. Can you guess the other? Listen to learn the other volcano.

Years later Dee was able to purchase a Falcon XA which he had converted into a Red XA Bat replica. After purchasing the XB Dee kept hanging around the shop. Later Dee became a partner in the company.
Mad Max Cars started out by importing Australian muscle cars into the US. Eventually the company began to create movie cars. They have recreated many famous movie cars. Greased Lighting, Kitt, The Ectomobile, and a DeLorean Time Machine just to name a few.

In this episode we are joined by Sena Wheeler. Sena and her husband Rich are the owners of Sean Sea Seafood.
Based in Wenatchee Sean Sea sustainably fishes for Salmon, Black Cod, and Halibut off the coast of Alaska. They process the fish at their custom processing facility and then ship the fish to Wenatchee.
Sena is a third generation Fisherman's wife. Sena's grandfather immigrated from Norway to Ballard and started commercially fishing in 1938. Sena's father fished commercially for 30 years. Rich married into the family and is now representing the third generation.
Sena has a master’s degree in Nutrition and Food Science with quantifying Omega 3's in fish. from Oregon State University. She shares a story about drilling holes in Albacore Tuna to test the Omega 3's Quite interesting.....drilling....holes...in fish....
While working as a food scientist Sena and Rich started selling fish Rich caught to friends. This quickly grew into a full time business.

In 1833 William Tolmie went on an adventure to Mount Rainier. In 2021 Troy Moss and Jerry Kenyon recreated Tolmie's journey. In this episode we chat with Jerry and Troy about their adventure.
Troy became inspired after a high school history teacher provided some of the backstory for William Tolmie. Years later Troy and Jerry were able to organize and recreate the excursion.
Don't know who William Tolmie is? Tolmie is credited with being the first non indigenous person to climb Mount Rainier high enough to determine there were glaciers on the mountain. Tolmie was a doctor. Additionally Tolmie worked for the Hudson Bay Company, He was in charge of Fort Nisqually for some time in his career. Tolmie Peak and Tolmie State Park are named after him.
During our conversation Jerry and Troy share stories about their journey. After months of planning they overlooked one thing. The week that they were to go on the hike would be one of the hottest weeks in history in Puget Sound.
There are stories about sprinklers, kind strangers, historically accurate Margaritas and much more. Troy and Jerry are both naturally gifted story tellers. We had a great time as we sat around a dining table while Jerry and Troy shared their adventures.

Craig and Sharon Campbell are our guests for this episode.
Tieton Cider Works started in 2008 and is now one of the largest cider makers in Washington State.
Craig's family started farming in the Yakima Valley in the 1920's. As a 3rd generation farmer Craig has stories to share about farming, apples, and cider.
Sharon was Tietons first salesperson. Sharon tells what it was like to go door to door introducing people to cider.
Craig and Sharon own Harmony Orchards. Their orchard supplies the fruit that is used in Tieton Cider Works ciders.

Stephanie Howe Vice President of Ted Brown Music joins us for this episode.
Ted Brown Music has been a fixture in Tacoma and Washington State for the past 90 years. With six locations across the state. If you grew up in the area and were in a school band program there is a strong likelihood that your instrument came from Ted Brown.
When Ted Brown Music wanted to start exploration camps to introduce kids to music. Stephanie was tasked with making that happen. TBM Outreach is the result. As a non-profit they are able to reach potential participants through the school system.
One of the ways the outreach program works is by accepting musical instrument donations. The repair techs volunteer their time and repair the instruments and then give the instruments back to kids who want to play music but do not have the money to rent or buy an instrument.
The Live It OUTLOUD program is an 8 week summer program that shows kids 12 to 18 how to be in a band. Featuring professional musicians as mentors the kids are placed into bands and provided hands on instruction. The program ends in a concert where the bands showcase their new found skills.
Stephanie shares a lot of stories and insights about Ted Brown Music and the Ted Brown Music Outreach program. It's amazing that this company is so generous and supportive of kids in the greater Tacoma area and throughout Washington State.

Darren Chromey has a passion for hiking and climbing. During our episode he explains what it is like to summit Mount Rainier.
On his first attempt to summit Rainier he was joined by his dad and sister. They were not successful. This only added fuel to the fire to one day summit Mount Rainier.

In this episode we chat with Spellemann Award winning Saxophone player Paul Sawtelle.
Paul has been playing Sax for over 30 years touring the world and performing in front sold out audiences where ever he plays.
After a sports injury derailed his athletic scholarship Paul turned to music full time. From playing organ in the church band to performing for President Clinton Paul has seen and done it all.
Perhaps the most interesting thing is how Paul won a Spellemann award for arranging the horns on a Danish blues band album that was being recorded in Seattle. Make sure you tune in to hear that story.

On this episode we sat down with Melody Federer and chatted about her music career as a singer/songwriter. I even was able to drink a cup of coffee while sitting around her dining room table.
Melody has written songs for Hillary Duff, Pink, Michael Bublé and others. One name that she has worked with is Burt Bacharach who had songs performed by over 1,000 artists! Her songs have been featured on The End KNDD FM 107.7 and other stations.

Emily was a good sport as we kept her focused on Washington State cider and cider makers. The association is a non-profit that has the goals of increasing the quality of cider produced in the region, increase sales of NW cider and cultivate the community of cider enthusiasts. Throughout the Pacific Northwest the NWCA is supporting over 100 cidermakers and orchardists who are growing and making some of the best ciders in North America and the world.
We talk about a wide range of topics about cider and cider making. Did you know there is a Lost Apple Project? How do you feel about hops in cider? Yes, hopped cider is thing. You will learn a ton about cider in this episode.
NWCA has a Cidery Map. You can plot your next cider road trip by using the map to find cideries throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia. Regan Lane is a Tacoma area musician who has had a long musical career. In this episode we chat about his musical career from the present to the past. We also talk about life in Tacoma and other interesting topics. Of course, coffee is mentioned.
Regan shares stories of his journey of sobriety and how it has influenced his musical journey.

In addition to SJC Regan is the singer for Strangely Alright. Billed as sonic time-travelers SA is a band that paints paisley patterned pictures that are both rooted in psychedelia and in optimistic kindness. We were able to recently take in a set by Strangely Alright and it was not just alright but downright amazing!
Regan started his musical career in a band in Tacoma named Baby Knockors, after Baby Knockers, he joins the band Strypes and became a musical mainstay in the Puget Sound.
Regan is a great story teller and you will find yourself learning so much about the process of making music and growing as both a performer and a human.

Mark Pickerel is our guest for this episode. Mark was the original drummer of the band Screaming Trees. Originally from Ellensburg Screaming Trees were one of the first bands to be signed to a major label during the "grunge era" The episode was recorded in the recording studio where the first Screaming Trees album was recorded.

Now CJB is making music in Washington State again. We were introduced to Chris at a industry event and knew we had to have him on as a guest.
At the time we recorded this episode Chris just returned from recording in Nashville with Jessica Lynne Witty. Chris shares his story about recording in Nashville. We broke our rules and talked about another state =) It sounds like he absolutely had a blast in Nashville and soon we will be able to hear the songs that were recorded there.

Andrew Handley co-founder of Union Hill Cider Co in East Wenatchee joins us for this episode.
Union Hill began with a failed experiment to make cider by letting it ferment in a closet. Lets just say the first batch was not a success. Fast forward to 2021 and Union Hill is creating some amazing ciders! So glad they did not give up.

In this episode we chat with Tomas Perez co-founder of Bell's Cookie Co. in Seattle.
What do you do when the pandemic causes all of our catering clients to cancel their plans? Why you bake cookies of course. Tomas and his wife Brooke were running a catering company and like many were having a lot of challenges when COVID was in full swing. One night they were talking about what to do and they came up with the idea to bake cookies. Within a week Bell's Cookie Co was born.
Tomas shares some great information about Bell's Cookies and the 12 varieties that they are currently serving. We talk about how they started with delivery in the Seattle area. Then opening a pop up stand near their commercial kitchen. Now, they have a retail location in Greenlake right across from the lake.
Bell's donates some of their proceeds to charity and they strive to be a business that is open and welcoming to everyone.

Pat got his start in radio by creating radio shows that he would broadcast through his parents house via the furnace. Even his grandmother would listen and would have grill marks from laying on the floor listening to the floor vent.
After he started his career in Oregon and Idaho Pat ultimately ended up in Seattle at King 5. Early in his career at King he started working on Seattle Mariners commercials. After a while Pat started contributing to Almost Live!
Almost Live! was a local sketch comedy show that ran for 15 years. Pat shares some great stories about his time on the show. The Ballard Driving School and Roscoe's Oriental Rug Emporiumare just two of the skits we chat about. Pat also has done a series of podcast interviews called Almost Live! Andrew Joslyn started playing the violin at age five. Today he is our guest on this episode. In-between Andrew has accomplished more than most people twice his age.
This conversation covers Andrews start at age five learning the violin and growing up in a family of well known and established classical musicians to his most recent project as Curator/Orchestrator for the Essential Series by the Seattle Symphony. Keith Barnes Founder and Master Distiller of Bainbridge Organic Distillers joins us for this episode.
Opening in 2009 with a focus of only producing only organic products. Bainbridge was the first distiller in Washington State to be USDA Certified. They are the only distillery in Washington State to be 100% Organic.
Keith is also collector of old alcohol with a collection several hundred bottles of whiskeys dating back as far as the 1870's. The inspiration he draws from tasting the vintage whiskey helps create the current products that Bainbridge is selling. Currently Keith is documenting his year of Whiskeys on his Instagram account names myyearofwhiskies.
We talk about Japanese whiskey and Keith provides a ton of information. Keith explains about Mizunara wood and how it is crucial to his Bainbridge Yama Mizunara Cask Single Grain Whiskey. The village of Yama on Bainbridge Island was the inspiration for creating this Whiskey which has won multiple awards including Worlds Best. The story of how the Whiskey was created and how it helped fund the archaeology project at the Yama Village on Bainbridge.

Sweet Thang and the Stumblers is a new group of old friends with a love for writing and playing original old-school roots music. The band takes their inspiration from Fam Jam’s, jam sessions with friends and family where everyone takes a turn leading songs. They continue this Fam Jam tradition with each member contributing with songwriting and singing, specializing in lush 3 part harmonies.

Home sick from school in Denmark Jessica found CMT on her television and her life has never been the same. After moving around Denmark and Europe as a young adult Jessica moved to the Tacoma area in 2010 and has put the music industry on notice.
Now recording in Nashville and performing on stages with some of the biggest stars in the Country Music Jessica is a musical force to be reckoned with. We were just able to see her perform in person and without a doubt she is an incredible performer who obviously loves what she is doing.

Ray started as musician at age 9 as a member of drum and bugle core. They handed him cymbals and he learned phrase "walk before you run" He played in marching, jazz, and concert band through high school.

Kwabi Amoah-Forson's mission is to spread peace throughout the world. This episode is our conversation with Kwabi who lives in Tacoma.
Starting by spending Saturdays in Wright Park, Peace Campaigning. Through the dialogs he had Kwabi was able to understand what peace means to people. He then travelled to Europe to continue his conversations about peace.
Kwabi now has The Peace Bus a 1988 Mitsubishi Van. He drives the van around and shares peace and humanitarian aid to people in Tacoma who are in need.
In 2019 Kwabi and other members of the Peace Bus organization travelled to the Mexican border to have a conversation about peace with people along the way and ended up having a conversation with San Diego Border Patrol agents.
Kwabi just announced his largest project yet. In summer 2021 he will be traveling from Tacoma to Washington DC with the goal of meeting President Joe Biden. Along the way he will be giving out books about peace, love and understanding to kids across the country.

AJ Rantz the creator of Cocktail Cards. The cards will take you from complete beginner to cocktail expert.
Starting out pouring beers at the Gorge Amphitheater, AJ shares some funny about Ozzie Osborn and other concerts during his years at the Gorge. This led him to a decade of being a bartender in the greater Seattle area.
Prior to COVID AJ left his job bartending due to the hours that were not working out with his personal life. He shares his journey as a fledgling business owner. The journey has been interesting and full of challenges. His perseverance has ultimately lead him to crowdsource Cocktail Cards.
We hear the story of how he was able to design the product, develop the recipes, and create the marketing. The cards have QR codes on them that you can use to see a video of how to prepare the drink!

Kim Roberts co-owner of Westport Winery joins us to talk about Westport, Wine, Whiskey, and Women (Mermaids).....
Kim and her husband Blain retired to Westport which is a great introduction to this episode. Realizing that they were bored and wanted to do something else. After a visit to California they wanted a project. Soon they knew they wanted to open a winery. Without knowing much about wine!
Founding Westport Winery in 2008 and in 2011 they were named Washington Winery to Watch by Wine Press Northwest. How is that for not knowing much about wine only 3 years earlier!
Kim appears to have boundless energy and after the winery, they have opened a restaurant, distillery, and now a Mermaid Museum.
The International Mermaid Museum focus is teaching ocean ecology from the ocean floor to the beach. Blending Mermaid mythology with ecology the museum is an amazing experience. The story of how the museum came into existence is amazing. Operating as an IRS 501c3 non-profit the museum can give back to the community.

Parker Olson founder of Forij joins us to chat about Granola, Functional Mushrooms, Sleeping in a tent for a year. This is a wide ranging episode full of great stories.
After finding an apothecary and taking a class in adaptogens and tonics Parker was introduced to Functional Mushrooms which have become one of the basic components of Forij Granola.

Metamorphic Gear founder Lindsay Lawrence joins us to talk upcycling. As an avid sailor and outdoors enthusiast Lindsay founded Metamorphic Gear in Seattle to help solve a problem with what to do with sails and truck covers after they were no longer in condition to serve their original purpose.
During our conversation Lindsay explains how Metamorphic Gear is able to keep products out of the landfill by upcycling into gear that can be used as part of your busy life. From climbing ropes to racing sails Metamorphic gives new life to items that previously were disposed of.

Gary Winston is a musician who calls Walla Walla Washington home. Gary was born in Walla Walla and began his musical journey after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. You will love his story.
His first guitar was from Montgomery Wards and soon after he received his first guitar it was obvious that this would be his path in life. After all a person is dedicated to their craft if they take their guitar with them to the bathroom. Sadly, the Vox Amp his brother purchased for him did not have the girls screaming like the music store owner told him they would.
Gary spent almost 15 years on the road during the 70's and 80's throughout Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada. After he stopped touring the PNW he joined the CC Ryders Band and toured Asia. The CC Ryders were the house band for the Hong Kong Grand Hyatt. Gary was able to play with some huge names (you have to listen to hear who)
When Gary came back home to Walla Walla he has continued to play and perform. Gary Winston and The Real Deal are a popular band at many of the wineries and are always a popular draw.
Make sure you listen to this episode. Gary plays a couple of songs for us and is a very engaging storyteller. I know I enjoyed my time hearing Gary's stories.

Melissa Misoda is both a glass artist and high school teacher. Melissa joins us for this episode to chat about her inspiration and motivation as an artist.
Melissa and her husband own Misoda Glassblowing Studio in West Seattle. After finding her passion after one day in a community college glass blowing class. Melissa has continued to study glass blowing at multiple schools across the U.S. She also is a teacher at Sammamish High School in Bellevue. She has taught glass blowing for over 20 years.

Cole Sisson founder of the Orcas Project, and owner of Doe Bay Wine Company joins us this episode.
Cole grew up on Orcas Island and has a ton of stories to tell. The one about the Whales and row boat is one you need to hear. After high school Cole attended the University of Washington and found his way to wine. After becoming a sommelier Cole began a journey that has come full circle back to Orcas Island.
Currently Cole is the owner of The Orcas Project. A collaboration with local artists paired with some of the top winemakers and vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. He also owns Doe Bay Wine Company a bottleshop and tasting room in Eastsound. Cole also is bringing something new to the island this summer.

Lakyn Bury and Nat Nickel of Cobrahawk join us for this episode.
Lakyn is the lead singer and Nat is the drummer for the band. Originally Cobrahawk was a cover band but over time they began to write original music and have recently released their second album. (do we even call them albums anymore?) =)
Cobrahawk is based in Ellensburg and they had a strong following pre-COVID. Like many musical acts playing music live has changed in the last year. We chat about their past performances and their hopes for getting out and playing live again in the near future.

In this episode we have a conversation with Alexis Devine. Alex is working with her dog Bunny on communication. Who knew dogs could talk?
Bunny is a Sheepadoodle who is learning to communicate with Alexis by using a buttons that play a specific word when pressed. Currently Bunny is putting together 3 and 4 word phrases. Alexis shares that currently Bunny is interested in poop. Sounds just like a kid right?
During our conversation my take away is just how much Alexis is committed to allowing Bunny to speak on her terms. Never forcing Bunny to use the buttons but by being patient and present Alexis and Bunny have an amazing relationship.
Alexis lives in Tacoma we talk about The Tacoma Night Market and how Alexis was a frequent vendor when the market was open. Lets hope that the Night Market opens again soon.
Never did we think we would be having a conversation about a talking dog. Listen in and learn how Bunny is part of a large ongoing study of animals and how they can communicate with humans. Perhaps one of our cats would be willing to join the study? I already know his first words would be "Feed Me"

In this episode we chat with Jason Spears one of the founders of Locust Cider and Brewing Company.
Jason and his brother Patrick Spears started Locust Cider in 2015. In this episode we learn how they came up with the name Locust Cider. Jason shares the vision and motivation for building a cider company that has grown to 11 tap rooms in Washington and with production and tap rooms in Colorado and Texas!
We learn about Hydrocephalus which is a condition that fluid builds in the brain without the ability to drain. Jason's daughter Lucy who was born just prior to the opening of the first location has Hydrocephalus. Jason explains how a portion of every cider sold is donated to help find a cure and better treatments.
We talk cider making and what some of the companies upcoming plans consist of. We also learn about virtual bike racing. Something Jason does when he is not working.

David Williams has been a fan of hydroplanes since he was five. Now he is the Executive Director of the Hydroplane and Race Boat Museum in Kent. In this episode we chat with David and we learn about Washington State Hydroplane history.

What is Fortuna Found?
At its heart, Fortuna Found is the brain child of Nic O'Neill. It is a place to create, play, and fly kites, and a way to foster creating an environment for others to do the same.
What does Fortuna Found mean? Well, you will have to listen to this episode to find out.
In this episode I chat with Nic and we learn about kites. Ranging from flying indoors (yes you really can fly a kite indoors) to traction kites that will allow you to surf on water, or ski on snow. Kites really are everywhere and Nic shares many interesting stories about kites and kite flying.
Nic has a project that she is working on to visit each state park in Washington State and to document the kite flying potential of each park. We are looking forward to hearing her adventures as she works though this project.

Lavender in Sequim. Today Sequim is well known for Lavender. In the 1990's that was not the case. Mike Reichner went to a meeting one night and came home with a brand new plan. Soon Lavender would be blooming and Sequim was on the way to be the Lavender capital of Washington.
In this episode we chat about how Purple Haze Lavender Farm was named. We learn that there are many flavors of Lavender Ice Cream! Purple Haze has a Lavender salad dressing and many other products using Lavender that we would of never imagined. There is a story about a wooden statue in the back of the truck. You will have to listen to hear the full story.
Mike is a great story teller and you can hear just how passionate he is about Lavender, Sequim, and Agritourism. We know you will enjoy this episode.
The farm is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Even when the farm is not in season you are allowed to walk the grounds and see all that is happening. During the season the farm is hopping and thousands of people visit each year.
Purple Haze has a retail location in downtown Sequim and is open seven days a week. You should stop by the shop and see all of the Lavender inspired products.

Dick’s Drive-in has been an iconic location in Seattle, Washington since the late 1950’s. Their food is a childhood staple for locals and a bucket-list item for many Seattle visitors.
But although Dick’s Drive-in’s core is burgers, fries and shakes, they are so much more behind the scenes.
Jasmine Donovan, granddaughter to one of the three original entrepreneurs that created and built Dick’s Drive-in, tells the story of how Dick’s came to be and what it has yet to become.
Donovan flipped burgers herself in high school while using her mother’s maiden name to keep her family ties to the president of the company a secret. She wanted to be treated just like anyone else while on the job.
Now the President herself and CFO of the company, Donovan has opened new locations, had to adapt during a pandemic, and is starting new adventures for the company.
The Dick’s Drive-in Food Truck has just been announced and Donovan is calling to customers to see just where they should visit first.
