Jackie specializes in guiding you through balancing your relationship with food, optimizing hormone control, improving gut health, decreasing inflammation in the body and sustaining these changes with neuroscience backed behavior change techniques. I'm excited to talk about the mental load and overwhelming joys of being a mother. The frustrating way that the diet and supplement industry pushes quick fixes and fads. And how to TRUST your body.

About Jackie:

Jackie is a Master's trained Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist but most importantly a mother of 4 amazing children. She has been helping women find balance amongst burnout for the past 15 years but recently branched out with her own business endeavor, Nutritiously Ever After and Evergreen Love supplements to focus more on mental health and the holistic interventions that can encourage adequate management of our moods. After growing up with a mother with mental health struggles and dealing with her own anxiety she wanted to use her knowledge about food, supplements and metabolism to positively impact mothers and normalize the stressful and overwhelming situations surrounding motherhood. Her goal is to spread hope and show Moms that we are the most resilient of all if we keep even a little focus on ourselves.

In today’s episode I had the great honor of chatting with Lauren Peterson of White Deer apothecary. I loved hearing about her journey as an artist, herbalist and educator. She taught a class on cyanotypes that lit a fire under me and was so fun and empowering! And I made a bunch of cyanotypes this summer. I chose all my favorite sun prints and compiled them into a calendar for the year. I will have them for sale on my website in the coming days!

A few of the highlights in this class are hearing how Lauren is so resourceful and the ways she innovates when she makes fire cider. It was also so fun to hear more about her brand’s evolution and how she weaves together creativity and aesthetics with her product line and teaching pedagogy. If you get a chance to buy any of her products, you will not regret it, everything she makes smells and tastes like absolute heaven! And it was so fun to hear about her approach to product design and radical flavor combining.

A bit about Lauren:

Bio:

Herbalist Lauren Peterson is a Juniper-lover, Sacred Journey School of Herbalism graduate & now teacher, and owner of White Deer Apothecary. Lauren's passion for plants grew from her desire to deepen her connection with the natural world and nurture relationships that allow healing to take place. Her favorite places to be are outdoors, in the kitchen, and on the dance floor.

What are some of the struggles and realities of postpartum intimacy? How can couples continue to connect on a deep level after baby is born? What happens when a baby is born 2 months early? And how can we heal from the trauma of time in the NICU? We get into some fascinating topics about healing using movement and somatic therapy and connecting to others in a much deeper way. By paying attention to what is, dynamics are transformed.

LEXI CHATARA-MIDDLETON LPC, R-DMT (she, her, hers)

Lexi has spent most of her life using her body to express herself and helping others to do the same. As a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado and a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist, Lexi works with a foundational understanding that the mind and body are not separate, but inexorably linked. And that exploring this connection in the present moment, both verbally and non-verbally, has healing and therapeutic effects.

Lexi received her Master's degree from Naropa University in Somatic

Counseling Psychology and spent many years working at Windhorse Community Services, Inc which provided her the opportunity to combine and develop her interests in neuroscience, therapeutic methodology, dance/movement, and mindfulness/awareness practices. The development of her therapeutic style was an organic process growing out of life experiences, graduate training, time spent working with individuals experiencing extreme states, and with parents who have struggled to process challenging birth experiences.

Her own journey as a cis-gender woman and mother has ignited a passion to support others on their journey into parenthood. There is no other act that can make one feel as helpless, vulnerable, or powerful as that of starting down the path of parenthood. Becoming a parent and birthing can happen in many different ways and for many it is not just a physical experience, but also a psycho/social/emotional one.

Working in the birth and parenting world has taught Lexi many things, one of the most valuable being that we do not have control. We don’t always have control over whether or not we can become pregnant, how we become parents, what type of birth we will have, or the impact it will have on our lives. What we can control and decide however, is when and how to get support. It is Lexi’s belief that integrating the intensity of the birth experience or the path to parenthood can take time and effort and needs to be approached with the understanding that what happens in the body has an effect on the mind and what is present in the mind is held in the body.

We get into the power of community and meditation, death and mourning and how to collaborate with others in a way that encourages people to process and transform their inner terrain.

ELAINE SU-HUI (b. 1978, Sydney, Australia) is an artist, facilitator, and dharma practitioner. Her work aims to be a direct expression of her dharma practice, investigating our relationship to change, impermanence, receptivity, and emptiness, through teachings from nature.

Trained as a printmaker, Elaine also makes her own watercolours from respectfully foraged, natural pigments. She is also the founder and artistic director of Inner Fields NY; an intimate, social practice project aimed at breaking down hierarchical and commodity-based forms of interaction, while building a culture of generosity and ecological wisdom. The project is now a collectivized organization of six artists, writers, scholars and educators, and is hosted in various unique sites across the United States.

Deeply influenced by her time living and working in Oakland, CA, in 2009, followed by 10 years living and working in New York, Elaine’s artistic praxis is fiercely oriented around a grassroots approach. Building small, collaborative communities, and liberating one’s creativity from a reputation economy, are core tenets to her ethos of art as a process of care and service. Whether she is investing in long term, collaborative relationships, or slow, material processes made by hand, Elaine prioritizes depth of connection as her primary marker of cultural impact.

Many organizations, mentors, and teachers, have significantly supported and guided Elaine's work and practice. She received her art training from East Sydney Tech; National Art School (Sydney); and RMIT (Melbourne), and was the beneficiary of awards, grants, scholarships, and fellowships from the Silk Cut Foundation; National Association for the Visual Arts; Australian Print Workshop; Ian Potter Cultural Trust; Kala Art Institute (Berkeley, CA); Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (New York, NY); and Prosjektrom Normanns (Stavanger, Norway); each of which has enabled new projects and/ or allowed life-changing decisions to be possible. Her work as senior printer and assistant to the artist SWOON from 2010-2017 was also hugely transformative.

Elaine’s dharma lineage includes Buddhist Theravadin, Chinese Mahayana, and Thai Forest traditions. She dedicates her work in service to the healing and protection of the planet.

Davinah Simmons is a full spectrum doula, a childbirth and lactation educator, a facilitator, a writer and photographer. In this conversation we chatted about how rest is medicine and what it has been like to be a full spectrum doula during this pandemic. her doula practice has evolved over the last 2 years. We discuss rage and grief and ancestral healing and the range of emotions that occur during postpartum time. She created a worksheet for her clients to have difficult conversations ideally before a baby is born and we discuss the workshops she has hosted and plans to host in the future, the enneagram and racism, writing practices and rituals to help release energetic chords between self and others. Dancing for our grief and witnessing birth stories as a way to help bring more healing to this planet.

Oooh, and She was recently featured on NPR and it is a great episode. There will be a link to that in the show notes if you wanna hear that. And you can listen back to episode 30 for our chat from almost 2 years ago.

so excited to share this episode #72 with Kelly Buwalda. We get into dance, thai massage, performance, why do babies dance and how we innately crave rhythm. We talk about singing to dogs, dancing for water with children and moving on air on rooftops. What am I talking about? Listen to find out more!

This episode is full of ideas to get you moving and shaking and climbing mountains in your mind and in the world. For example, Kelly was inspired by another quietly strong woman to climb Kilimanjaro for her 40th birthday and she shares some of the struggles and support from that journey.

A little bit more about my guest today.

Ways to get inspired and move more and how our efforts and accomplishments are

Kelly Buwalda is an artist, educator, and adventurer. She is propelled by creativity and fueled by connection. Originally from Indiana, she has been creating and collaborating in NYC for nearly 20 years. After acquiring her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance & Psychology at Hope College (Holland, MI), she trained with National Dance Institute (NDI), a far-reaching dance education program founded by Jacques d'Amboise. She became a Teaching Artist with NDI in 2005, and has since taught thousands of elementary students, and directed At the River's Edge, NDI's 2018 "Event of the Year." As a dancer, she performed for numerous project-based companies, working with choreographers Mei-Yin Ng, Erin Dudley, and Julio Rivera. In 2010, she graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and became a certified Health Coach. Years later, she studied Intuitive Thai Therapy with Sarah Seeley, and currently offers wellness sessions for groups and individuals. Kelly was awarded a 3-month artist-in-residency at Chez Bushwick in 2014, and her choreography was selected for Detroit Dance City Festival in 2016 & 2017. She will be premiering solo dance films created during COVID with filmmaker Fred Hatt on February 3, 2021. Among these and other pursuits, she loves her new role as dog mama.

About to hop to it , but before we do, I have a major favor to ask. If you like this show, please share it with a friend. Big thanks to you for your support, for listening and for doing what you do!

Lets jump in! cha cha cha.

What do you do when you gotta start all over? Lean into this story and the sweet poetic voice of Leah Larabell to find out.

Leah Larabell is a nature-loving wife, mother and daughter who finds a great deal of purpose and satisfaction in sharing her love for the land.

Leah descended from a long line of Celtic Cunning Folk and has found her ancient gifts within the world of herbalism. After awakening this passion, she became obsessed with learning as much as possible and has dedicated over a decade of her life to rigorously studying and diligently practicing the art of herbalism. She has been taught by renowned herbal elders as well as Mother Nature herself.

As a clinical level herbalist, she considers herself a Western eclectic herbalist and is so grateful to the many plant wisdom keepers from many lands that passed down this art so she may carry it today.

Many experiences over the years have humbled her to consciously removing her ego from the herbal practice. Realizing, it’s not her who offers healing, but the plants who do the good work. Each one bringing some type of special knowledge or ability ready to help if you just know who to ask. With this, Leah never uses plants; instead, she calls upon them, asks for their help, looks toward them for insight, or simply sits by them for companionship.

This approach also allows Leah to offer an easy access point to interested, beginning herbalists. It is her goal to create as many Plantfolk and herbalists possible while on this earth walk.

She is a forever student of the land and eternally grateful for the lessons.

To celebrate Inauguration day I'm sharing a great way you can share your voice with the world this year. Start a Podcast! I’ve been asked numerous times this week, how I started and while there are gobs of episodes out there with the same idea, I felt called to share my story and you may relate. I am not tech-savvy. I am prone to distraction and can be a bit of a commitment-phobe but I have stuck it out for 69 episodes and going on 3 years. I’ve had to take some breaks, I’ve changed the format and continued to evolve and learn, and have done this on a budget. I’m slowly growing my community and this podcast is starting to make a profit. So I want to tell you what you need and don’t need to start a podcast and how to dig into your purpose more. I want to help you avoid some mistakes I have made along the way and save you time and money.

I’m also creating a handy dandy checklist and that is available at www.Thymeinthestudio.com

And maybe you don’t want to start a podcast, there are still great writing prompts and ideas for evolving your creative endeavors.

Please share this episode with a friend who you think would be a great podcaster but maybe they are stopping themselves before they get started because of a lack of self-confidence or worried they won’t know what to say after episode 3.

I’m including some flower essences that have helped me keep going on this journey and some tough talk about expectations in the next episode.

Thanks to Corrina Repp for letting me share her songs, Release me in the beginning of the episode and “Need You/Don’t Need You for the outro.

Connect with her @corrinarepp

Please be sure to connect with me @thymeinthestudiopodcast on Instagram

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or want some advice and I might include your question in a future episode!

And an extra big shout out to my beloved patrons- Jennifer, Jeremy, Jb, Emery, Mary and Katie, Vicky, and Herbal Marie. I know some of my supporters don’t have much disposable income and every penny counts to them and so it is extra meaningful that they make the sacrifice to support this work. I believe in supporting people and projects I believe in and so while I don’t spend money on too much of anything besides groceries, I do donate to a few people whose work I love. I want more money in the hands of people doing good work in this world. And I appreciate you trusting me with your time and pennies.

Looking for inspiration to write a song? Hear how the pandemic has sparked something good. New projects have been unearthed. Could you turn a bedroom into a recording studio? Yes! We discuss being in a band versus solo work and the unfolding of Corrina's voice through time. Plus! Corrina takes beautiful photos and succumbed to the demand for people begging for her photos and has begun creating unique gift packs to share her photography with you. Listen in for inspiration. Maybe there is some new way you could share your work with the world this year?

Corrina Repp captivates with her music, crafting enchanting songscapes that activate all your senses. She plays the electric guitar and is a singer/songwriter unlike any other. She is an actress who was featured in 8 Portlandia episodes, and several independent films and she is a phenomenal photographer and wonderful person to be around.

A little bio about her from www.allmusic.com. Written by Katherin Fulton

“Specializing in sparse, fragile songs that favor the electric guitar, singer/songwriter Corrina Repp emerged from the music scene of Portland, Oregon in the late '90s. After releasing her fourth album, 2006's The Absent and the Distant, she focused on the indie rock band Tu Fawning (2007-2012) before reviving her solo career with The Pattern of Electricity in 2015. Repp has also acted in films and on television, including a recurring role on IFC's Portlandia.

Settling in the Pacific Northwest after frequent childhood relocations, Repp began her career as a musician thanks to a part-time job. While selling band merchandise online, she connected with the Decemberists, who were so impressed by her songs that they recommended her to Hush Records. The label released her debut album, A Boat Called Hope, in 1998. The CD-R EP The Other of Mud materialized a year later. Repp followed up with the albums I Take on Your Days in 2001 and It's Only the Future in 2004, both on Hush. After touring with the Decemberists, M. Ward, and Cat Power, among others, Repp released The Absent and the Distant on Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde label in 2006.

Putting her solo career on hold, Repp and musician Joe Haege formed the band Tu Fawning with Toussaint Perrault and Liza Reitz in 2007. They released a pair of albums for the City Slang label (2010's Hearts on Hold and 2012's A Monument) and toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. After Tu Fawning disbanded in late 2012, Repp took on several acting roles in small independent films and appeared on multiple episodes of the popular Portland-based sketch-comedy show Portlandia. In 2015, she resumed her solo career with her fifth LP, The Pattern of Electricity. It arrived via Caldo Verde. A joint release between sonaBLAST! and Jealous Butcher Records, How a Fantasy Will Kill Us All, followed in 2018.” -https://www.allmusic.com/artist/corrina-repp-mn0000123043/biography

OOh, and I’m shifting the format of the podcast a little and offering you about half the episode here for the general public. If you wanna join the inner circle for sparkly bonuses and to hear the full conversation join Patreon at patreon.com/thymeinthestudio. You can hear the full unedited version that includes behind the scenes chats about love, money, and a special tarot reading for Ms. Repp.

Why do this? I thought it would be nice to offer 2 options- some condensed wisdom for all and the full length version for those who can’t get enough. :)

Some herbs that help protect you immune system, herbs for autoimmune conditions, a little info about adaptogens and remedies for fatigue and exhaustion.  I also dove into the struggles of doula work and how you can better show up for mamas, birthing people, families and yourself.

So please feel free to message me on instagram if there are topics you want me to dive into in the future.

I’m gonna touch on each of these topics briefly today and invite you to do a creative challenge with me for the next month. I’m taking December off from the podcast but realized I’m really gonna miss you!

So if you wanna join, just draw a plant, flower or herb and tag me with @thymeinthestudiopodcast. I’ll share a few of your drawings each week and at the end of December I’ll choose 1 artist to interview. I’ve started a new 100 day project of drawing a little each day and sharing at saramariestudio and feels so good to sit with a plant, notice its messages and just draw for a little each day. Such a great meditation.

Ooh and if you live in Georgia or know someone who does, please urge them to register to vote before December 5 and request a mail in ballot. That little runoff election will determine a lot of what happens or doesn’t happen in the next 4 years.

The podcast is taking a vacation and will return in January 2021!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Curious about how to create a tropical greenhouse in the mountains of Colorado at 8500 feet? i was too! Listen for more info and we also talk about the golden handcuffs of instagram, what it has been like for her being pregnant, pivoting to doing more online business due to the pandemic and how that has shifted the business in some surprising ways. Kate also shares some very personal stories about her experiences with being pregnant and how Lyme disease and autoimmune conditions brought her to herbalism. We talk about her love for permaculture and formulation and how opening the shop has been a way of creating a community of wonderful witchy women who support each other. We also discuss the difficulty of slowing down in this culture and the beauty and balance of asking for help and setting boundaries as we navigate new terrain.

(Bio from the website www.alpinebotanicals.com)

Kate Miller is the founder of Alpine Botanicals Artisan Apothecary in Nederland, Colorado. She is a Certified Herbalist, Biodynamic herb grower and Permaculture Designer & Teacher with a focus on Dry-land & Alpine Farming, Western Herbalism, Mountain Ecology, Ethical Wildcrafting, & Habitat Restoration.

She began her studies in herbal medicine and holistic nutrition as a teenager to cope with chronic physical illness, including Lyme disease and autoimmune conditions. She is currently exploring how various modalities in alternative medicine, such as Indigenous European and Traditional Chinese Medicine, are complemented and enhanced through Anthroposophical approaches to healing. Kate actively explores her ancestral medicine traditions from her Celtic, Ukrainian, Germanic, & Mediterranean roots.

Her apothecary’s mission is to encourage personal agency over one’s health through knowledge of and access to regeneratively grown herbal medicines. In addition to offering a full service herbal apothecary, Alpine Botanicals includes a community clinic space, a licensed herbal production kitchen, and a 900 square foot attached tropical forest greenhouse & nursery.

Kate was introduced to Biodynamic farming methods in 2010 during an internship at Growing Garden's in her senior year at CU Boulder. She received her degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on International Sustainable Agricultural Policy. She has been intensively learning & practicing biodynamic and regenerative farming methods at the Alpine Botanicals herb farm site located in East Boulder since 2015. Our house product line features many of these biodynamically grown herbs and flowers.

Kate has taught on alpine ecology, agroforestry, herbal medicine, garden strategies, fermentation, Biodynamics, and more at Permaculture Design Courses throughout Colorado including the Boulder PDC, Denver PDC, and Sunrise Ranch PDC , and Permaculture Action Days.

When she's not at the shop, working in the greenhouse, or crafting the Alpine Botanicals product line, you'll usually find Kate hiking with her husband and dog, playing in her herb garden, or recipe testing edible and topical creations in her kitchen. She lives in a 100% off grid home just minutes away from her shop and cherishes the nurturing quiet and beauty of living on the edge the Rocky Mountain Wilderness at 8500ft.

Have you ever heard someone speak and you could feel your brain firing off neurons, making connections and just going wild with excitement? That person is saying something you need to pay attention to. That was my reaction to an artist talk given about 9 years ago by today’s artist. Katerina Lanfranco helped spark my curiosity regarding the connection of nature and art which led me to start this podcast. Gold star for sparking this fire and a reminder that you never know what impact your actions can have on the future!

You can check out Katerina’s work currently up at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery and the Sweet Lorraine Gallery in NYC. What is this work all about? Here’s more about her and her work:

At the core of my art practice is the act of exploring aspects of nature, science and fantasy. I collect, organize, and recombine images and objects from nature and everyday life. I make art as a way to ask questions about the world that I live in:

How do I make the invisible visible?
At what point does fantasy become reality?
How is our concept of nature a cultural construct?

What can we learn from natural forms, cycles, and rhythms?

My work seeks to explore the apparent duality of culture and nature, and the ways in which our understanding of nature informs our own identities. With each of my exhibitions I consider in the aesthetic experience of the viewer, and how the site-specificity of the show will evolve and develop in dialogue to the architectural setting of the space. I reference culture-specific modes of representing nature, such as botanical illustrations, floral fabric patterns, curio cabinets, scientific notes, dioramas, and panoramas. Symbolist and Visionary art traditions along with Romanticism and colorists such as the Fauvists and Les Nabis are great influences on my work. Landscapes, sacred geometry, natural disasters, natural history, biological structures, and genetic engineering are recurring themes. I am also interested in cultural conceptions of progress, systems of knowledge, and the problem of creating meaning in relation to the natural world.

My current body of work explores geometry and patterns found in nature combined with portraiture and landscape painting that explores emotions and psychology.

Katerina Lanfranco is an NYC-based artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York where she makes paintings, drawings, mixed media works, and sculptures. She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and spent her early childhood in Berlin, Germany. As a teenager, she lived in Bangalore (Bangaluru), India. Lanfranco earned her BA in Art (Painting) and in Visual Theory and Museum Studies from UC Santa Cruz, and her MFA in Studio Art (Painting) from Hunter College, City University of New York. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) in Berlin, and the Corning Museum of Glass.

She is the recipient of several awards and residencies including Japan-US Creative Exchange Fellowship Artist-in-Residence Award; DNA Artist Residency, Sugar Shack Artist-in-Residence; Vermont Studio Center; Pollock Krasner Fellowship at the Byrdcliffe Artist Residency; Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Artist in Residence with Flux Factory; Tony Smith Award (Hunter College); Hunter College Exchange Scholarship (UdK Berlin, Germany); William Graft Memorial Fund Travel Grant (to research High Baroque Italian painting). She has been invited as a guest artist and critic to colleges and residency programs in California, New York, Tennessee, and Florida. She writes NYC art reviews for the Art Blog based out of Philadelphia. Her work has been represented by the Nancy Hoffman Gallery since 2006. Lanfranco’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and internationally in Toronto, Canada; Berlin, Germany; Milan, Italy; and Kyoto, Japan.

Lanfranco founded Rhombus Space in 2013, and was Chief Curator at Trestle Gallery from 2015 to 2018, where she is on the advisory board for the gallery. Recent shows include solo shows "Mystic Geometry" at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery, "Efflorescence" at the SCPS Gallery at Pratt Manhattan, “Talk to the Moon” at Day & Night Projects in Atlanta, Georgia, and “Shadow Light” at HOUSEGallery in Philadelphia. Her work has been reviewed in ARTnews, ARTinfo, and the New York Times.

Have you ever wondered how to feel more embodied? Dance! Or get a reiki treatment or work with plants and so much more! Wow, So excited to share with you the chat with Rochelle Jamila-artist, herbalist, doula, dancer, energy worker and mover, shaker, activist! It might be impossible to walk away from this conversation without numerous ideas for how to make a difference and enjoy your life and body more.

As we were chatting Rochelle was bundled up in a blanket that her great great grandmother quilted. What have we inherited from our ancestors- both good and bad. How can we move forward in a way that is beneficial for future life on this planet? We discuss the magic of dance and how its power goes beyond any words and can drop us into our heart and our root chakra for deep healing and release. She is a full spectrum doula which includes work as a period doula. What is a period doula you ask? Darling- stay tuned and you will discover that and much more!

We also discuss herbalism and her work to create Heal the Land- ✨an oasis for BIPOC creation, education, cooperation & healing in the Deep South✨

I loved the energy of sitting with Rochelle as she is such a deep listener and thinker and is doing profound work to heal herself, the communities in which she dances and the land upon which she steps softly.

Her work is truly a vision and inspiration and resonates with a loving elegance.

We discuss reparations and creating more creative and enriching opportunities to connect with plants and the land especially for the BIPOC community.

Blessings! My name is Rochelle Jamila Wilbun. I am a Black doula, herbalist, Reiki practitioner and dancer based in Brooklyn hailing from Memphis, TN. I come from a long line of teachers, conjurers, caregivers, and earth tenders. Along my healing journey, I found Reiki, herbalism, and meditation as tools for wellness and transformation. I became a full spectrum doulain 2018after learning about the maternal health crisis and wishing for better support and information during my own reproductive journey. I offer nonjudgmental support through reproductive transitions including birth, postpartum, pregnancy loss, and menstruation. Since 2017, I have studied plant healing with wise women herbalists in New York City and the South. I graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. in Dance and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. My art and healing practices are rooted in the legacy of radical Black artists, healers and the Mississippi delta. It is my heartfelt belief that wellness and spiritual alignment are all of our birthrights!

A few shoutouts that came up in our conversation:

Dez Mon Omega Fair is an interdisciplinary artist and poet living in Long Beach, California. Their work explores storytelling and self-reflection, delineating the cathartic opening of joyance availed by the art making process. They achieve this expressive art through painting with water, brushless watercolor, and ink on washi; collaborative documentary film projects as well as experimental forms of poetry. Pioneering novel sonics which explores the use of long-form soundscape and audio recordings of riddles, prose, poems and chants.

Public performances are set within large-scale immersive installations consisting of figurative watercolor paintings and poetry

sourced from abstractions of the heart and emotional histories of the body.

So many beautiful takeaways form this interview and I love this reflection,

“There is no me without you and no you without me.”

So excited to share with you a conversation I had with Dez Mon Omega Fair. We met years ago and I was immediately enchanted by Dez’ graceful way of being in the world. They showed me their paintings, which at that time were colorful abstracted figurative work on thin japanese papers. We ended up living together for a few years and It was so wonderful to catch up with them and hear about how Dez art continues to evolve year after year, The residencies he has attended, finding the love of his life and continuing to make work and always experimenting and discovering new ways to share his vision.

I also loved listening to some of his latest Novel sonics, which Dez graciously allowed me to share at both the beginning and end of this episode! and I love what Dez had to say about the Black Madonna!

I see some of the struggles that folks face as new parents and specifically noticing what new mamas are dealing with. Today’s episode is focused on breast milk and postpartum nutrition which could also be applicable to any human who wants to feel more nourished and vibrant. New mamas need extra nutrient density. The experience of growing and giving birth to a babe is a stressor on the body and a mom may be depleted. I’m going to talk about some of the top 15 foods, 15 herbs, and top 10 supplements a person could take to boost vitality and may help with milk production.

Michele Kishita is a Philadelphia-based artist who uses colors found in

nature that are not typically associated with “natural” colors and focuses

on landscape as her primary subject. Her paintings are strongly influenced

by the graphic stylizations and compressed spaces of Japanese ukiyo-e.

Kishita’s paintings are in a number of private/corporate collections,

including Toyota, Capital One, and Kaiser Permanente, and her work is

featured in Create Magazine, on the Poetry Foundation blog, and Studio

Break podcast, as well as in several literary journals. She exhibited at the

Sharjah Art Museum in the United Arab Emirates and the Museum of

Non-Conformist Art in St. Petersburg, Russia. Kishita received both her

BFA and MFA in painting from the University of the Arts.

Was so great chatting with Michele Kishita, artist, writer and teacher about living in Japan and how that time has influenced her art, how her view of artist residencies has shifted and some of her resident highlights. She also discusses her experiences working with gallerist Bridgette Mayer and synchronicities that occurred that made it feel like the right choice to work with an art coach. She teaches writing and gives some great tips for cleaning up your artist statement and she has some great book recommendations and unconventional tips for gowing tomatoes.

About her recent body of work: Absent Futures

Absent Futures is a new body of work on shou sugi-ban (burnt timber)

panels that addresses the current state of deforestation and the

opposing concepts of resilience and devastation. While our forests and

natural spaces continue receding due to industry and suburban sprawl,

the more catastrophic losses are occurring in the rainforest where

swaths the size of forty football fields disappear each minute.

Suggestions of landscape painted onto the burnt surfaces depict a

memory of what was while at the same time highlighting what remains

and can still be salvaged. It is a reminder of the persistence and

vitality of nature and our role in choosing its success or failure, which

ultimately determines our own.

Her work in general:

“My current work investigates the dialogue between the wooden surfaces on which I paint and the trees from which those panels were built. I highlight the interconnectedness of humans and nature, while addressing life’s impermanence and transience. Industry's straight lines and angles try to control nature, transforming a tree’s rounded mass into flat rectangular sheets; yet, the wood grain’s undulations, marking the tree’s growth and annual water intake, emerge despite its new, boxy confines. A tree's experiences are indelibly written on its interior and at the same time are a historical account of the landscape itself. In my paintings, I strive to conjure the landscape that no longer exists but is inherently contained in each panel while expressing the visual contrast and harmony where human-made structures and nature intersect.” from www.michelekishita.com

I also want to speak the name of Jacob Blake and send prayers to his family and loved ones. Yes we still need to disarm the police and restructure the law enforcement and justice system in this country. Oh and the medical and education systems could use an overhaul too. We have work to do. Please register to vote and please do whatever is in your power to vote.

So thrilled to be sharing the chat I had with EarthSpeak founders today. Natalie Ross she is the founder, podcast host and awareness activator and Shawna Cason, Co-founder, brand alchemist and medicine woman. This the first ever podcast interview the 2 of them have ever done together and the first podcast I’ve ever hosted with 2 guests at once. Was so fun to hear their stories and discuss building a supportive collective without hierarchy. They discuss the ease of working together and how trusting people to thrive in their zone of genius allows for smoother collaborations. I also loved our chat about podcasting and how our passions and business take on their own energy and how to tuning into what your projects want can have unexpected positive outcomes. This is a quick dive into how everything is alive and everything is about relationships.

Ooh and in the spirit of connecting more with others I am hosting a giveaway. Never done this before but offering a piece of pottery to a special someone! It’s a cup I made this wild year of 2020 and perfect for a little sip of water, wine, tea or to hold some flowers on your altar.

Our conversation today comes from South Africa. Nox Makunga- completed a PHD in Botany, a Fulbright in Minnesota and lives in Stollenbach in South Africa focusing on healing plants and indigenous healers. She studies how these plants and unique preparations can be deeply healing and beneficial to all people. She shares so many insights about how to study and understand the plants and how the environment of a plant changes its chemistry. She discusses balancing teaching, researching, and writing. And the power of collaborating and sharing the magic of plants with each other.

So excited to share with you the conversation I had with Margo Candelario  who is one of four generations working on Young Female Farmers. These powerful women own and run a farm in Georgia, outside of Athens and are serving food deserts with her delicious produce, pastries and herbal goodies. They have been featured on NPR for changing the outlook of the farming industry and featured in the Huffinton Post as one of the top 30 under 30 businesses. Be sure to follow their work @youngfemalefarmers. Margo is also an author, poet, and artist and created a book called “Looking to the Clouds for Daddy.” Margo is a wonderful storyteller and we discuss the difference of working around pain versus working through the pain of a situation and the power of owning your own business and the experience of collaborating with a friend to write a book. She also discusses her experience as a Black Woman living in Georgia right now.  And gives a painful reminder that we have so far to go to create racial equity in this country. There is so much we can do right now to heal and to help create more racial equity and justice. Read a book, make a call, send an email, donate, send a gift, meditate, volunteer, start a book club, plant a garden, listen to a podcast, have a difficult conversation.

Let’s do the work!

Have conviction but have your facts straight.

Exposure to agriculture began in CA

Neighbors taught them about farming and auctions, buying equipment and cattle and growing plants

Grew up riding horses

Parents were from Harlem, and moved back to NY for her senior year of high school

Summers in NY- and always felt like home.

Living in NY Helped her find her voice and created clarity

Father was a writer and cartoonist

Uncle worked for sesame Street

Moved to Georgia with her husband

Creativity in her DNA

For success: there must be some stability, family, community, friends to support through the difficult times

Being able to make mistakes and still be encouraged with unconditional love

Having children and allowing them space to make their own mistakes

Moving through the pain versus working around pain

The healing power of witnessing and being witnessed

Collaborating with another author to create a children’s book

Jerry Craft

Long term friendship made it easier to collaborate together.

Listens to the body to allow herself to be led through her day.

Listen to the animals

Listening to music is the cue to paint

Earth wind and Fire

Marvin Gaye

Loves to listen to things that have meaning and true stories

“Why We Can’t Wait” by Martin Luther King Jr

Enjoys feeding her busy mind

Does not sit still and is often told to sit down

Always thinking and working

Enjoys listening to people who are forward thinking

Progress!

Likes positive conversations and seeking solutions and brainstorming

Stagnant quagmire slows progress

Working through rather than avoiding it

Idea of community is a great idea

But not our present reality

Wearing different hats allows her to stay flexible and move through life

Growing your own food

Being proactive about health-mental, physical, spiritual and emotional

Plants that are top of mind:

Yellow Dock-beneficial for blood, liver, kidneys

Roots for sale

Dandelion

Mullein-beneficial for lung support

Plantain-natural bug repellent and joint support, scalp treatment

Blackberry

Elderberry

Wildcrafting safari

Transitioning into growing food

Ask yourself-why do you want to farm

When you do not work for anyone else, you cannot be controlled

Chatting with Elan of Fern Valley Botanics opened a world of inspiration and awareness. She is such a powerful and thoughtful force in the world! And she offers so much wisdom about listening to your intuition, creating a business and finding healing within the herbal and Black community. She just started a business and it is blasting off in the most beautiful way. Her work is so beautifully crafted and she operates from a heart centered space! She shares stories of her journey and the many reasons why she started her own business. We discuss issues about racial inequality and how we all need to do the work to make this a safe space for all.

.

“I'm a fairly new homesteader that has been living in the Catskill mountains for the past four years! I came up from Brooklyn where I was born and raised. But the Brooklyn I knew had changed so much and didn’t feel much like home anymore but a place that really heightened my anxiety. I found some solace in the mountains and woods.

👩🏾‍🌾

A huge part of me moving up here was to hone in on skills part of the legacy of Black Americans such as agriculture, crafting, carpentry/architecture, rearing livestock, and so much more! Recently i've been expanding into my carpentry! I started building a little storefront for guest to buy some of our produce goods and my soap ofcourse. It will be my experiment for getting myself ready to build my own cabin studio next. I will keep yall posted on the progress!

👩🏾‍🌾

I was inspired to create a soap business after becoming a mom and wanting to create products where I had the agency to know what the ingredients were and making sure that they were safe and nourishing for my family and friends. I'm so happy to now share these same thoughtfully crafted soaps with you all!

👩🏾‍🌾

Thank you for supporting this one women artisanal soapmaker! I am a herbalist in the Catskills who loves partnering with plants. I work hard creating the highest quality, love filled, and sustainable soaps because you deserve it!”- Elan

Anastasia "Staj" Hanson is an astrologer, tarot reader, and medium currently offering services on lands stolen from the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Ute. She is a white cisgender woman, descended paternally from some of the original colonists of the North American continent, as well as Italian aristocracy from her maternal line. Her services are for all, and she is currently educating herself on the consequences of colonial suppression of indigenous American/African religions and spiritualities.

As Thyme In The Studio is a podcast showcasing the talents and methods of healers of many different kinds, I think healing is at the forefront of the minds of listeners. How can we engage with dismantling racist power structures as healers?

Thymelights:

Here are groups I'd like to shoutout now, with a focus in empowering black people/communities:

  • Femme Empowerment Project—This BIPOC-led project is hosting street medic trainings for folks on the ground in Minnesota. As healers, we have the ability to come prepared, mentally and with equipment, to protests. We can put ourselves in the role of the ones tending to protesters who have been assaulted. I find the Femme Empowerment Project's work to be highly relevant. They also organize and host many workshops relevant to the needs and questions of queer, trans and intersex BIPOC.
  • BEAM / Black Emotional and Mental Health—Emotional wellness and mental health is at the forefront of the work we as healers do for others. BEAM is focused on the many lenses of healing, from therapy, to yoga, to artwork, and provides these resources for the purpose of healing the black community.
  • The Innocence Project—It is clear that the systemic abductions of black people from their families and communities, to fund the prison system, is a deeply harmful pipeline in our country. We must correct the staggering disproportions of black people and POC from poor communities being funneled into incarceration. The Innocence Project thoroughly organizes to exonerate, educate, and legislate our way to a just world.

I am personally donating to all of these groups, and I encourage those of us in the healing arts who have the means to do the same!

So excited to share with you the conversation I had with artist, illustrator, doula, mama, visionary, Kira Birney. She has an amazing story of self awareness, creativity and service and I think it will help you see how important your time on this planet is.  I’ve seen many aspects my work evolve because of our chat. Kira is a gamechanger! She discusses how to make your business a reflection of your authentic self, how to create your website as  a tool for reflection and manifestation. She shares aspects of  her cultural background and we dive into some shadow work surrounding race, gender and privilege and she has wonderful suggestions for how to support new parents, new doulas and creative spirits- aka you!. And she gives suggestions for collaborating and what it was like illustrating a children’s book. Her understanding of the transition from maiden to mother will fill you with inspiration.

Statement by Kira Birney (at www.kirajoie)

"My role as an artist, mother and doula is fluid. Each influences each other and provides me a creative outlet to be of service.

Creativity is my guide for processing my experiences, environments and identity. Drawing, painting and crafting are my primary methods of expression. Recently I have identified the meditative qualities to my art practice. Art as meditation allows me to support my family and doula clients from a present, intuitive and heart centered space. Creativity is life.

The meaning of mother has been an evolution from daughter, sister, babysitter, counselor, teacher to having my own children. Parenthood has been my ultimate teacher and creative guide. Motherhood is art.

My personal experience of navigating early parenthood guided me toward supporting people and families in their postpartum period. Personally I was shocked of my lack of knowledge surrounding postpartum after the birth of my first child. I had so many questions at a fragile and amazing moment in my life.

I believe new parents and birthing folks deserve to be celebrated and honored by providing them a safe space to rest, heal and bond. As a doula my goal is to provide answers to questions and resources on a wide range of topics, non judgmentally supporting an empowered entry into parenthood."

"I am no longer aligned with carriage house birth due to their harmful treatment of a black employee"-Kira Birney

You are going to love the episode today with Luke Simon!  Great tips on getting into the flow of your life and finding joy with writing a weekly newsletter and fascinating info about his journey with writing his latest book, a memoir about life in Los Angeles  and finding yourself when you feel lost. You may walk away with a deeper, more playful understanding of yourself and how to honor your own purpose on this planet and how to feel more love in your heart.

Also listen till the end for a wonderful guided meditation that will put your soul at ease.

"Luke is a co-founder of Maha Rose Center for Healing in Brooklyn and his healing work has been written about in The New York Times and Vanity Fair.com. Luke Simon shares Reiki, Breathwork and Tarot to shift energy and get people on track to their Purpose. Luke believes we are in a transformational time on this planet, and don't have time to waste in doubt, confusion or negativity. He seeks to go straight in, to open the heart and free the past. Every session is a space for your soul to be seen, heard and supported. Luke often helps clients process life lessons into gratitude and wisdom. The intention is to create sacred space for clients to remember their spiritual essence and purpose.” www.maharose.com

“I share the healing tools that help me stay creative and flow with life. In this shifting time on the planet, change has to come inside ourselves first. We must forgive, trust, clarify and get brave, I use my intution to guide others on their path with healing sessions and events in NYC and online. Learn about my healing work. And contact me if you need some support transforming. Take a deep breath and feel you're in the right place wherever you are reading from:)”-Luke Simon (www.lukesimonmystic.com)

Also, please take care of yourself. Two if the factors that seem to be common with covid-19 complications are dysbiosis and low vitamin D levels. Eat lots of greens and foods rich in vitamin c, eat fermented foods, steer clear of sugar and food allergens. Move your body to move your lymph. If you feel you are getting sick, gargle with saltwater every hour and eat garlic and ginger and get plenty of rest and fluids and lots of sunshine.

Please enjoy and when you listen, you can screenshot the episode, share it on social media and tag me@thymeinthestudiopodcast so i can give you a big ol virtual hug and thank you for amplifying this positivity out into the universe.

Such a wonderful chat with Courtney Cosgriff about what to plant in your garden to raise your vitality and to help pollinators thrive. We discuss different approaches to beekeeping and how to do so more holistically. We also discuss ways to honor and celebrate the bees.

“Honeybee Herbals is a business that is dedicated to providing Earth centered healing and education in the hopes of restoring our connection to the natural world. Honeybee Herbals is inspired by the divine connection between honeybees and plants, and harnesses this inspiration to heal communities through empowering individuals with tools to heal themselves.

I came to the world of herbalism, beekeeping, and earth centered traditions because like many others my heart ached to see not only what we were doing to this earth but also how much of ourselves we had lost in the process. In 2011 I had two near death experiences both car accidents, the first one led me to travel through Oregon where I met a beekeeper and the second one was caused by a wasp stinging me in the eye. It took some time but eventually I came to the conclusion that these and the many other honeybee related events that followed were not simple coincidences but rather signs pointing me to a deeper calling. So I listened and began a long journey of studying with various mentors until forming my own path and relationship to honeybees centered around a deep reverence and fascination with the history, myth, and magic surrounding them. In addition to beekeeping I am passionate about education and activism on behalf of pollinator conservation. In the winter of 2016 I was hired as the resident beekeeper and educator at The GrowHaus in Denver. Since then I’ve taught in many of their education programs geared towards various age groups. I think the honeybees have many valuable things to teach us and I am passionate about sharing their wisdom with many. When I fell in love with the Honeybee I fell in love with the world.

My journey as an Herbalist and Nutritionist also began with the honeybees. When I planted my first garden for the honeybees I knew very little about the magic the plant kingdom possesses. With time I became mesmerized by the plants watching the honeybees travel from flower to flower the thyme, lavender, sages, and hyssop with their beautiful flowers and intoxicating aromas. I was captivated and inspired by this beautiful connection between honeybees and plants. In 2012 I began school at Metropolitan State University of Denver. It was during this time that I was experiencing a lot of health issues myself while also seeing those I love most suffer deeply. I started to take classes centered around holistic therapies and I was captivated. I didn’t grow up in a household that exposed me to these therapies but when I found them I feel I found a big part of myself. I graduated from Metropolitan State University in 2016 with my Bachelor’s of Science in Integrative Healthcare. After graduating I wanted to dive deeply into plant medicine and nutrition so I continued my studies at The Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism. It was here where I really fine tuned my vision as well as going on a deep journey of personal healing and discovery. In June of 2018 I graduated from this school as a Certified Clinical Herbalist and Nutritionist and Flower Essence Practitioner with over 1,900 hours in clinical training and education. I also hold a Permaculture Design Certification from the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and an Herbal Wilderness First Responder Certification from The Human Path.

It is my vision to utilize my education and skills to bring earth centered healing and education to communities around the world in hopes of helping to restore the balance between humans and the earth through finding healing and balance within ourselves.”

In this Episode Stacey Ramsower shares the idea of resourcing and finding ways to feel joy, ease and trust during times of transition and struggle, how to live in a way that feels medicinal and how everything can become foreplay if you so desire. She shares her birth story and the pulsatory nature of connecting to others and the birth experience. She also talks about how this time allows us to digest our experiences and how to stop feeling fear of our own bodies. She is a wonderful podcast host, and has a beautiful youtube channel as well.

Stacey Ramsower provides Ayurvedic Food/Sex/Womb Support and is a:

• Somatic Sex Educator

• Innate Postpartum Care Provider + Full-spectrum Doula

• Mama

• Mentor

• Creative heart

If you would like to be considered as a Thyme in the Studio star for next week's episode please message me @thymeinthestudiopodcast on instagram and send me 3 images of some creative projects to be shared as inspiration for the world. About her work (from www.staceyramsower.com)

Sacred Body is rooted in the fundamental principles of yoga, Tantra, and Ayurveda, which all state that anything in life can be medicinal or toxic depending on how we relate to it. Through turning toward our wounds and challenges as implicitly intelligent, we can transform self-sabotage into an experience of deep peace, joy, intimacy and freedom now.

Through the course of the work, clients identify for themselves not only what they deeply desire out of life, but the patterns and beliefs that have kept them from NAMING and SATISFYING these desires. In other words, what transpires is a deep reprogramming of inherited beliefs and behaviors around self-worth, deservability, autonomy, and voice. Programs may involve Ayurvedic food and cleansing protocols, somatic processing (yoga, bodywork, pelvic floor work) and coaching around boundaries, consent and pleasure.

This work is for you if you are seeking trauma resolution related to sex, sexuality, pregnancy, postpartum, intimacy, addiction and co-dependence. Ayurvedic coaching and bodywork is also available for pelvic pain, menstrual or fertility challenges, chronic infections, and digestive issues.

Conversation with Brendan Ellis Williams about herbalism, journeying, connecting to ancestral wisdom and pilgrimages in Ireland, using tarot and the Ogam for spiritual divination and the importance of initiation and ceremony in life. He discusses what it was like to write his latest book

"Seeds from the Wild Verge: Myth, Nature, and Theology in the Border Stream of Celtic Wisdom" and the magic of storytelling.

Links:

https://www.brendanelliswilliams.com/

https://brendanelliswilliams.tumblr.com/

https://www.instagram.com/brendan.ellis.williams/?hl=en

From Brendan's Website:

Healer, traditional Western herbalist, spiritual director, counselor, teacher, and poet-seer, chanting old rebel tales; tracing back song-streams of indigenous European wisdom; ferrying souls on the ancient, mythic riverways of human transformation; guiding folk from all walks of life back to their birthright of wholeness, to their roots in the living Earth, to ancient ancestral wisdom, and communion in a cosmos ensouled.

+

I can probably best encapsulate who I am and the nature of my work on this particular earthly pilgrimage by describing the role of the poet-seer (in Gaelic, fili), according to the native traditions of my people, who are Scottish, Irish, and Welsh. To be a fili implies many vocational threads, among them healer, priest, ritualist, diviner, shamanic functionary, spiritual counselor, scholar, teacher, poet, and storyteller. The fili is a bearer of cultural traditions, a guide and 'cure of souls', to whom the spiritual well-being of the tribe is entrusted. Though the ancient role of the fili is long since forgotten in our time, these elements nonetheless constitute the essence of my calling and identity on this beautifully strange pilgrim journey, and I embrace them daily with as much power, gratitude, and authenticity as I can.

At its heart, my work is rather like that of the old village shaman, traditional healer, cunning man, or wiseman, combining all the aforementioned vocational elements into one seamless whole—: a bit like the person one might have taken a day's journey to visit in the wilds of the wood many centuries ago: one who would draw on archaic ancestral stories and practices to heal you, bring you into spiritual, physical, and emotional wholeness, and sacramentally initiate you into spiritual adulthood.

The central aim of my work, in all its iterations, is to restore individuals and communities to wholeness, to facilitate a felt, conscious experience of reciprocal blessing and interbeing in the great family of Nature.

+

I’ve been practicing as a healer, in one capacity or another, for many years. I was trained in shamanic and energetic healing techniques more than twenty years ago, and began my formal training as an herbalist in Northern California roughly ten years after that, initially making a concentrated study of North American rootwork and magical herbalism, followed by training in Native-Hispanic California herbalism. I then pursued an immersive, certificated study of clinical practice in the modality of traditional Western herbalism. I have had the great fortune of studying with master herbalists Charles Garcia, Matthew Wood, and Sean Donahue. I am presently completing a certification in integrative meridian therapy and reflexology, with a special focus on somatics or the ways that trauma and unprocessed grief are unconsciously stored in the body, eventually manifesting as systemic imbalance and illness.

  • In my work as a counselor, teacher, and spiritual guide, I aim to help individuals and communities inhabit new (and often ancient) stories, to experience new depths of listening from the heart, to shed old narratives that are limiting and life-negating, and instead embody fresh stories that empower and facilitate restorative, holistic, and life-giving transformation—for the human community, and for the whole of Nature.

I hold terminal degrees in poetry and theology, from St. Mary’s College of California and the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, respectively. I’ve worked as a professional artist, counselor, and writer, spent quite a bit of time living in monastic community, and served as a hospital chaplain in the San Francisco Bay Area. Presently, in addition to working as an herbalist and traditional healer with a clinical practice in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I serve as educator, counselor, and spiritual director in a variety of local environments, especially parochial and academic.

I regularly give lectures, presentations, workshops, and retreats on a variety of subjects, including ancient Celtic spirituality and folklore, spiritual plant medicine, rewilding (deep reconnection with the natural world), ancient Christian mysticism, meditation, and contemplative practices.

You are going to love this episode with Jennifer Lord! We dive into painting, being a librarian, learning and teaching tai chi chuan and ikebana, butoh and being a mom. And fashion! I attended a gallery exhibition and was immediately drawn to the vibrant paintings by Jennifer and then I got to meet her and she has such a wonderful and thoughtful presence. Was an absolute delight to chat with her and got so much from this chat.

Bio

Jennifer Lord is an artist and teacher. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Naropa University in Visual Arts and T’ai Chi Ch’uan. She studies and teaches T’ai Chi Ch’uan with Rocky Mountain T’ai Chi Ch’uan. She is a student of Sogetsu Ikebana with Kalapa Ikebana. Lord’s most recent events include, a solo exhibition at JuiceBox Gallery, a solo exhibition at Alto Gallery, a group show at MegaFauna, digital video collaboration with Noah Travis Phillips published online by RealityBeach.org and exhibited at Sluice in London. She has a forthcoming collaboration with the MÚSED fashion house. Lord exhibited ikebana in the 2018 annual Sogetsu Ikebana Spring Show in Denver, Colorado. Lord’s collaboration TEAM-UP! with Noah Travis Phillips will be published by +4 Press. She lives, works, and teaches in Boulder, Colorado. Her work is held in several private collections.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Speculative Abstract Rainbow-scapes.

Working in acrylic on canvas or hardwood panels, I make paintings that are simultaneous. The poetic titles of my paintings act as a door into the work and provoke multiple meanings.

My work is a portal into another way of seeing the natural world, one of flux and interconnection, an encounter both destabilized and unified. My paintings are ecological and cosmological, depicting different scales and perspectives from various subject orientations. These paintings disrupt singular notions of subject/object. I present emergence, simultaneity, relationship, and multi-directional flows.

While working, I remain on the edge between mapping an image or landscape and being receptive to that which arises through process. This edge is generative, spontaneous, and dynamic. I work with both the specificity of place and the abstractness of nature and phenomenon. I think about climate change, natural and environmental disasters, and the supernatural through process-responsive gestural painting.

The accretion and variety of marks within my paintings coalesce to create an ecology. This ecology of marks describes various emotional, physical, and hidden material qualities of the landscape. My methodology is cosmological.

My current series, under the working title, “Natural/Human Disasters” explores the interconnection of human and geologic Earth shaping forces. My bold and complex paintings explore the human caused destruction of nuclear bombs and mass-scale weaponry, mining, and oil spills alongside phenomena like lightning, volcanoes, floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes. These paintings are chaotic and harmonious imaginary landscapes of the Anthropocene.

Simultaneously looking at the tension between environmental destruction and ecological wholeness, my work is always on the side of nature’s doubtless awesome vitality, grounded in the majesty of mountains and the magic of rainbows.

Megan Fuhrman-Wheeler is a phenomenal herbalist and artist who started an apothecary in Spirit Lake, Iowa. We talk about her path with herbs and how she has gained clarity about her path through her healing journey and has visualized and created a thriving business that helps her community.

Bio:
I am Megan, the owner of MEGAN & CO. Herbal Apothecary and Clinic.

My path to herbalism was paved out of personal experience. As a child, I was in diagnosed with epilepsy at age of 10. Most of my childhood was spent juggling different pharmaceuticals with the hopes of calming my seizures. By the time I had reach my mid twenties, I was looking for another path and that road was herbalism.

I attended the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism from 2014-2016. Through herbalism and nutrition I was able to heal myself, as I had never done before. My personal experiences strengthened me and I soon became determined to share these methods with others.

I opened MEGAN & CO. in June of 2017 as a Certified Clinical Herbalist, a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, and Flower Essence Practitioner. It is my hope that the Apothecary is able to spread herbal knowledge to rural America in a safe, constructive, and accessible manner.

Thank you for loving herbs! I sure do.

About Davinah (from her website)

I’ve always been magnetized to pregnancy and childbirth. When I was a child, instead of cartoons, I watched “A Baby Story” on TLC and my family could never figure out why I was so obsessed with the bond between mother and baby. As an adult, I received my Masters degree in Counseling and Student Development, and spent years shepherding college students through the initial, disruptive years on their own. Working in the counseling field taught me to hold space for big emotion, to ask hard questions, and to help others find their inner voice during transformational experiences. I’ve always loved taking care of people, but as I grew into myself more deeply I began to realize that the people I love supporting most are one’s who give birth. When I learned about the role of a Doula, the dots began to connect. I love everything about this job: the complexities, the intersections, and the relational dynamics. Birth encapsulates all of the messiness of being human, and I love teaching people that the vulnerabilities of our imperfection bring us closer to one another.

When I’m not supporting birthers and babies you can find me making magic in the kitchen, snuggling with my dog, reading comic books, hiking, hopping on a ferry, or taking a day trip for the sole purpose of a good meal.

Facing West Shadow Opera’s Purcell in Shadows is a surprising combination of Live Baroque Opera and Multimedia Shadow Theatre Performance. Countertenor William Sauerland performs operatic arrangements by Henry Purcell with Lumia artists Caryl Kientz and Lydia Greer. Facing West Shadow Opera creates a dense and holistic visual landscape made from animation, projected found footage, and live shadow puppet theater paired with operatic vocals and special guest accompaniment to create a unique and poetic examination of Henry Purcell’s countertenor repertoire. Imagery inspired by Klaus Nomi, Tom of Finland and the music of Henry Purcell. (Adult Content.)

With live musical accompaniment by Paul McCurdy, keyboard and Andrés David Vera, cello.

Facing West Shadow Opera is a San Francisco Bay Area artist collective hybridizing art forms to create unique performances, each akin to a live graphic novel. Using poetry, queer mythologies, cinema and baroque opera as points of departure, Facing West combines analog shadow theatre with handmade animation, video projection, found footage and live music. Lumia artists Greer and Kientz have been creating live shadow plays with live musical accompaniment as Facing West Shadow Opera for the past 4 years in collaboration with countertenor William Sauerland and Soprano Shauna Fallihee.

Juice Cleanse, curated by Brooke Tomiello, will be on view at Lane Meyer Projects through May 20th.

Juice Cleanse:

From 12:01am January 28th through 11:59pm January 30th, 2019, Marsha Mack went on a three day celebrity-inspired juice cleanse.

Realized in ceramic sculpture and installation, Juice Cleanse is the true account of the foods craved during this 72hr endurance performance.

Are you experiencing stomach pain, fatigue, or irritability, as the result of your latest or current cleanse?

Do you have painful daydreams about food while staring down your 8 ounces of green juice?

Finally, the solution is here. Juice Cleanse is the answer to the answer; the cure for the cure. This experiential, experimental treatment reestablishes the sacred relationship between mind and body, all in the relaxing spa environment you deserve. Gut flora will once again flourish, toxins with retreat back to their mysterious strongholds, and no matter the level of physical suffering of your body, your mind will be sated.

Juice Cleanse is a lifestyle choice that applies not only to cold-pressed beverages, but to all aspects of modern living. The technology is simple: by pampering yourself in your internal psychological spa, you are comforted in mind and by extension, body. Simply put, soothe your mind and your body will follow. You have never experienced simultaneous control and release quite like Juice Cleanse.

Realized in sculpture and installation, Juice Cleanse investigates New Age health & wellness trends via full immersion in a celebrity-approved 3 day detoxification regimen. Presented as the ultimate luxury spa offering treatments ranging from 20 piece chicken nuggets to beef pho served in paradise, Mack moonlights as guru in pop culture wisdom. Utilizing endurance performance as guide to desire, Juice Cleanse ponders the personal mythology surrounding food, emphasizing the importance of trusting one's gut.
