The lived experience podcast is about creating conversations around mental health and in particular stories surrounding growing up with a mental illness in the family. As a child of a single mother with BiPolar, I wanted to create interviews that would fill the content gap around this subject and lesser-known issues that are covered in the current mental health awareness movement. Mental health awareness and advocacy go far beyond depression and anxiety. I hope that these discussions shine a lot on issues you may not be aware of or even inform you to know that you are not alone.Learn more at www.livedexperiencepodcast.com

In this episode of the Lived Experience podcast, mental health advocate Billy Todd shares his story of managing anxiety and turning his life around.
Billy emphasizes the seriousness of anxiety and its impact on a person's life, and shares what he did to manage it.
During the COVID-19 outbreak in Melbourne in April-May 2020, he found comfort in chaotic environments, which research suggests is common among people with anxiety.
Despite the comfort he felt, he found that he neglected his own needs during that time and accumulated a lot of emotions, which hit him all at once and led to emotional distress.
Billy learned the importance of focusing on physical health, including exercise and nutrition, to improve mental health.
He also listens to science-based podcasts and does a lot of reading and research to further his knowledge. Additionally, Billy discusses how creating an alter ego named Pablo helps him to counteract his negative self-talk.
The episode also features a speaker who shares similar experiences with managing anxiety and finding ways to cope.
They sought help and spent three weeks at a psychiatric hospital in Sydney, where they received group and one-on-one therapy with a psychiatrist. Through therapy, they learned coping mechanisms to recognize and manage abandonment issues.
Listeners of the Lived Experience podcast can share their own stories by contacting the host through the podcast's website or social media.
The podcast focuses on sharing stories of lived experience on mental illness and mental health topics to help promote understanding and encourage conversations around these important issues.
Big thanks to Billy for sharing his lived experience.

In this episode of the Lived Experience podcast, host Joel Kleber interviews Georgia, a psychiatric nurse who works in a private inpatient facility.
Georgia discusses her passion for mental health care and why she finds it rewarding. She explains that working in a psychiatric facility is not like what is portrayed in the movies and that patients are provided with a calm and relaxed environment, similar to a home away from home.
Joel asks Georgia about the process of getting help in these facilities, and Georgia explains that in the public setting, involuntary patients are held if they are at harm to themselves or others.
In the private setting, patients are referred by a GP or psychiatrist and must be willing to go voluntarily.
Georgia also discusses her thoughts on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), explaining that it is a last-resort treatment for dire circumstances where medication has failed.
She has seen it work wonders in some cases but acknowledges the potential side effects.
The episode also covers visiting hours for families, the challenges of bringing children into psychiatric facilities, and the importance of mental health tribunals in the public setting.
Overall, Georgia provides valuable insight into the workings of psychiatric facilities and the care provided to patients.
Big thanks to Georgia for sharing her story and the work that she does along with all the other mental health nurses throughout Australia and the World.

Catherine Eagleson was suggested to me as a guest who wanted to share her story about living with Bipolar disorder and also how she has created puzzling for mental health.
Catherine developed the Clue Detective Online Puzzle Portal http://cluedetectivepuzzlesonline.com/ ‘It comprises a range of crosswords, codewords, filmograppuzzles (cryptograms based on an actor and a selection of his/her films), sudoku and world building challenges etc.
There’s something for everyone. Check out her blog each day for puzzling inspiration!
‘Annual membership is available to individuals for a small fee per year One can be a lifetime member too. It is also offered as an e-resource in a growing number of public libraries across Australia.
‘Once a member, one can access puzzles on PC, laptop or tablet, wherever there is a wi-fi connection.’
Catherine’s ultimate dream is for Puzzle Detective to be in every library in Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. ‘If it’s not available from your library, please request it. Many library patrons who enjoy solving puzzles will reap the benefits all year round!
‘One gentleman once told me that my (codeword) puzzles save his sanity on the frequent long-haul flights he takes as they’re “the best way to while away the hours between London and Sydney!”
In this episode you will hear how challenging the brain with puzzling is great for your mental health.

Genevieve Bailey’s films have screened in 50 countries, winning over 30 awards to date. With a background in short drama, comedy, and music videos, I AM ELEVEN (2011), her ambitious first feature documentary, was shot in 15 countries and 12 languages. It received critical acclaim and a theatrical release in Australia spanning over eight months, including a record 26 weeks at Cinema Nova in Melbourne. I AM ELEVEN was named New York Times Critic's Pick when it opened cinemas.
Genevieve's latest film is Happy Sad man, which is about opening up and gaining insight into how we can better be there for ourselves, our mates, and our loved ones. Produced by Proud Mother Pictures. 7 years in the making, shot across Australia in Victoria, NSW, Northern Territory, Queensland, and Tasmania. Features 5 male key participants aged in their 30s-70s, and additional participants, both male and female, aged into their 90s.
It shows BiPolar openly and realistically, which is not shown often on the big screen.
For me, it's the most enjoyable and best film I have seen about mental illness and mental health, I highly recommend it to anyone to go and see, plus you're supporting an Australian filmmaker.
Huge thanks to Genevieve for her time and insights.

If you have a parent with a severe mental illness or know someone who does, they need to hear this episode which is all about this topic.

I wanted to record this emergency podcast before R U OK Day, which is today, with my thoughts around it and a perspective from someone who has lived with someone who has had a serious mental illness for many years. I also talk about a very gutsy marketing ploy by a company called Pilot in response to R U OK Day, which is controversial and true!

In this episode, I run through some thoughts on why this still happens and how we need to go beyond surface-level awareness.
I also talk about my challenges in accessing good help, which I still feel is a problem for many people in Australia.

I was asked to be a guest on the well-known "I swear I never" podcast, which is about finding yourself in a situation you SWEAR, you never could have predicted? They bring you the extraordinary stories of everyday people - from the bizarre to the heartbreaking, they don't hold back.
They have a different theme every week, and last week I was the guest to talk about part of my story.
I tried to speak from the heart, and if I were on again, I probably would have more concise thoughts. However, big thanks to Bek Day and Tess Lazarous for the opportunity.

A solo episode where I talk about my interview on the 'I swear I never' podcast, my struggles with grief/PTSD, why hotlines don't help, embracing your passion, and also comment on the recent findings about the news stories revealing that after receiving more than 12,000 complaints about Victorian mental health services, the state’s regulator has not taken compliance action against a single mental healthcare provider in seven years.

Very special episode with Little Dreamers Founder, Madeleine Buchner OAM speaking to us for a full hour about young carers and what her organisation does in this much-needed area.
Maddy grew up caring for her younger brother, who had a range of chronic illnesses, and her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. At nine years of age, she identified a gap in the support system for Young Carers and began to raise awareness through fundraising events and stalls.
Over a decade later and with more than 5,000 young people reached nationwide, Little Dreamers is Australia’s leading Young Carer organisation. Across a range of key support programs co-designed with young people in caring roles, we’re breaking down barriers and empowering youth, with a vision to ensure that every Young Carer around the world is supported by someone or something by the year 2030.
We do not need more hotlines, however, we need more support to organisations like Little Dreamers and Satellite foundation who do so much unheralded work in the community.
Huge thanks to Maddy for her time out of her busy schedule and next time it comes to donating, please consider this organisation or other relevant ones in your area that help young carers.

Rose Cuff, is the founder and executive director of Satellite Foundation which is an organisation dedicated to helping young people who have a parent(s) with a mental illness.
I talk about Satellite a lot on this show as I know how important this organisation is in changing the future of many children who would often not be supported by the current mental health care system. Satellite foundation was even specifically mentioned in the Victorian's Royal Commission into the Mental Health system.
Rose is a brilliant person who has dedicated more than a decade to helping children and young people in the community.
In this interview, we chat about why she created satellite, what it does and how they make an impact. We cover a lot of other ground as well about the topic of mental illness and mental health in general.

My first solo episode!
It's about time I shared my lived experience as that's what the podcast is about, so I have decided to tell my story in 10 - 15 minute solo episodes to give you an insight into the otherside of mental health that is not often talked about. There is a severely disproportionate amount of mental health awareness that does not focus on children who have a parent with a mental health condition, I hope through sharing my lived experience that it makes more people aware of what young people go though with having a parent with a mental illness.
Massive thanks to the friends families I have mentioned in this episode, there is a lot of good people out there and I don't know where I would be without your support back in the day!
You know who you are!

Although Dan has endured great hardship, he hasn't allowed it to hold him back, and he has built an extremely successful business using his past trauma as his fuel to success. If you're a fan of David Goggins, you will enjoy this episode.

In this episode, I speak to Jonathon Gleeson who is a dairy farmer in South West Victoria and has achieved purchasing a dairy farm by age 30 with no assistance, which is a remarkable achievement.
Jonathon goes into detail about how he exactly did this and also the mindset that is required to do this. He gives some great advice around long-term goal-setting and having a vision.
I have always had an idea for a book called "Money Management with a Dairy Farmer" as they live on the edge and are great money managers which you will hear about in this episode.
We did do a video version of this podcast, however, the zoom connection played up so it is audio-only for this one. I hope to go down to his farm soon and film some video with Jonathon of this farm setup and also to capture some great advice on how you can achieve your dreams.

There is a significant lack of online content for young people to learn from those from lived experience, so please reach out.
I was able to relate to Maria a lot and I am sure you can as well if you grew up in a similar situation.
