Bio: Alex leads an R&D team at TRI dedicated to solving the hard problems related to soft, contact-rich assistive robot manipulation and physical human-robot interaction. He loves designing and building soft robots that aren't afraid to make a lot of contact to get stuff done.
Alex has been with TRI since early 2017. Before that, he was building "huggable" robots at Disney Research. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Drexel University, and has been working and researching in the fields of humanoid robots, robotic manipulation, simulation and entertainment since early in his career, including three years as a robotics engineer in South Korea upon graduating school. Dieter Fox is Senior Director of Robotics Research at Nvidia. His research is in robotics, with strong connections to artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning. He is currently on partial leave from the University of Washington, where he is a Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. At UW, he also heads the UW Robotics and State Estimation Lab. From 2009 to 2011, he was Director of the Intel Research Labs Seattle. Dieter obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Bonn, Germany. He has published more than 200 technical papers and is the co-author of the textbook "Probabilistic Robotics." He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the AAAI, and he received several best paper awards at major robotics, AI, and computer vision conferences. He was an editor of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics, program co-chair of the 2008 AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and program chair of the 2013 Robotics: Science and Systems conference.

Bio: Cynthia’s interests focus on computational methods for design automation of robotic systems. Robots integrate mechanical, electronic, and computational subsystems into physical devices that perform complex tasks ranging from autonomous navigation and manipulation to cooperative and social interactions. Cynthia aims to provide designers with intuitive computer-aided design tools for creating customized robots and behaviors. Her work involves developing techniques for representing, modeling, simulating, and fabricating these designs. Cynthia’s research lies at the intersection of computational geometry, data driven methods, and rapid fabrication techniques such as 3D printing and origami-inspired assembly.

Bio: Nikolaus is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science with courtesy appointments at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering and the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He obtained a PhD from EPFL advised by Alcherio Martinoli in 2007, and spent two years at MIT CSAIL working with Daniela Rus as a post-doc. Before moving to EPFL, Nikolaus was a research assistant in the Collective Robotics Group at Caltech in 2003, also with Alcherio Martinoli. Nikolaus earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zürich) in spring 2003. He wrote his master’s thesis at the Collective Robotics Group at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA, about collaborative coverage supervised by Alcherio Martinoli and Joel Burdick, and spent a term at Lunds Tekniska Högskola (Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden) as an exchange student at the Department of Automatic Control working with Rolf Johansson in 2002. Before moving to ETH Zuerich in 2000, Nikolaus studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Munich from 1998.

Robert Wood: How do you calculate power usage in flexible robotics? Is it electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic or some combination? How do you Simulate flexible robotics reliably? Can standard simulators work?
Bio: Robert Wood is the Charles River Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences in the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, an Associate Faculty member of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, and a National Geographic Explorer. Prof. Wood completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. He is founder of the Harvard Microrobotics Lab which leverages expertise in microfabrication for the development of biologically-inspired robots with feature sizes on the micrometer to centimeter scale. He is the winner of multiple awards for his work including the DARPA Young Faculty Award, NSF Career Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, Air Force Young Investigator Award, Technology Review’s TR35, and multiple best paper awards. In 2010 Wood received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Obama for his work in microrobotics. In 2012 he was selected for the Alan T. Waterman award, the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious early career award. In 2014 he was named one of National Geographic’s “Emerging Explorers”. Wood’s group is also dedicated to STEM education by using novel robots to motivate young students to pursue careers in science and engineering.

The debate topic:
Bioinspiration, the development of novel materials and structures inspired by biological systems and evolution, has been the essence and main claim of Soft Robotics research. Yet, soft robots are nowhere close to mimicking the life cycle of biological creatures, i.e. growth, adaptation, morphogenesis, and returning to their starting state. Going beyond smart materials, biohybrids may be the solution to multifunctionality and biocompatibility. In this debate, we will bring together experts in Bioinspiration and Biohybrid design to discuss the necessary steps to make more competent soft robots. We will try to answer whether bioinspired research should focus more on developing new bioinspired material and structures or on the integration of living and artificial structures in biohybrid designs.

Ali Khademhosseini is the Director and CEO of the Terasaki Institute and former Professor at the University of California-Los Angeles where he held a multi-departmental professorship in Bioengineering, Radiology, Chemical, and Biomolecular Engineering and the Director of Center for Minimally Invasive Therapeutics (C-MIT). From 2005 to 2017, he was a Professor at Harvard Medical School, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. His studies have been cited over 70,000 times. Khademhosseini is best known for developing hydrogels for tissue engineering and bioprinting.

The Bio:
Jean-Eric’s career at the European Commission started in 1993. Since then he contributed in shaping EU policy in various fields and achieved major breakthroughs, notably in DG Transport, where he led the development of the Trans-European Transport Network Policy and was responsible for Europe’s transport infrastructure policy and investment strategies, the single European rail area, inland waterways and port policy.
He also gained considerable experience at international level: in DG Enlargement, his portfolio covered Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. He was also EU Ambassador in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania from 2004 to 2007.
In 2015, he was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission, in charge of Better Regulation and Policy Coordination.
In all his endeavours, he puts co-creation and systemic change at the heart of the decision-making process, and strongly believes that citizens should be more involved in shaping public policy agendas.

Christos Bergeles received the Ph.D. degree in Robotics from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, in 2011. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts, and the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College, United Kingdom. He was an Assistant Professor at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (which he co-founded) at University College London. He is now a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at King's College London, leading the Robotics and Vision in Medicine Lab. Dr. Bergeles received the Fight for Sight Award in 2014, and the ERC Starting Grant in 2016. His main research area is image-guided micro-surgical robotics.
