Frogg Moody has had a decades long involvement in Ripperology in all of the most well known organizations and events. Frogg was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire. In 2004 he formed Timezone Productions to research and record social history and historical events through publishing, guided walks, theatre, lectures and exhibitions. He is the organiser of the annual Salisbury History Festival now in its fifth year. Frogg’s talk in entitled The Life and Times of Detective Sergeant William Thick.
Adam Wood is Editor of Ripperologist magazine, and the former Editor of the Journal of the Police History Society. He is the author of Swanson: The Life and Times of a Victorian Detective, the Notable British Trials volume on the Trial of Percy Lefroy Mapleton, and co-author with Police historian Neil Bell of Sir Howard Vincent’s Police Code, 1889, and also the co-author of the series of Edgar walking guidebooks with Blue Badge tour guide Richard Jones. Adam is the owner of the nonfiction historic crime publishing company Mango Books. His talk at this years East End Conference is on Dr. Thomas Bond and his Profile of Jack the Ripper.

In July 1964, the Sunday Mirror ran a front-page story headlined: PEER AND A GANGSTER: YARD ENQUIRY. While the article withheld the names of the subjects, the newspaper reported that the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police had ordered an investigation into an alleged homosexual relationship between ‘a household name’ from the House of Lords and a leading figure in the London underworld. Lord Boothby was the Conservative lord in question, and Ronnie Kray the infamous gangster. Yet within a couple of weeks the story had been killed off, vanishing as suddenly as it had appeared. Lord Boothby and the Krays carried on with business as usual. For the first time the full saga of the cover-up and its consequences can be revealed. Drawing upon recently released MI5 files, government papers, extensive interviews, and a wide array of contemporary reports and secondary sources, Daniel Smith pieces together how eminent figures from the political firmament, the Security Service, the Metropolitan Police, the legal profession and the media saw to it that the Sunday Mirror’s story was crushed almost as soon as it emerged.

Dr Andrea Nini- A forensic linguistic analysis of the Jack the Ripper letters
Dr Andrea Nini is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Linguistics and English Language at the University of Manchester. In 2018, Dr. Nini published An Authorship analysis of the Jack the Ripper letters in Digital Scholarship in the Humanities, in which he analyzed 209 letters and postcards sent to police and newspapers that claimed to have been written by ‘Jack the Ripper’ and concluded that several were journalistic hoaxes, supporting the claims made by Sir Robert Anderson, Melville Macnaughten and Detective Chief Inspector Littlechild.

This 22 year old audience recording was rescued from a second hand bookshop by Mark Ripper and we are grateful to Mark for saving this piece of Ripperology history so that we may share it with you.
Originally recorded on a 120 minute long cassette tape and sometime later transferred to CD, this recording is beginning to show its age, but its historical value outweighs the deteriorating quality of the audio.

Tumblety: The Hidden Truth interviews author Michael Hawley and researcher Brian Young about the contents of over 600 pages of Saint Louis County legal documents that have been recently discovered which for the first time describes Tumblety traveling with a collection of surgical knives as well as containing further evidence of Francis Tumblety's hatred of women, particularly prostitutes. Plus, the startling sworn depositions from these early 20th century documents that reveal Tumblety was born with a sexual development disorder that classified him as a hermaphrodite.

In the 1840s the popular image of a typical poisoner was a woman who put arsenic in her husband's food. The 1850s, however, saw a new kind of poisoner come to public attention. Male, middle class, educated,disarmingly respectable, he killed in a clever scientific fashion, often using the less common kinds of poison, and unusual ways of administration. He might even be a medical man, the very person one was supposed to trust, giving poison to his trusting victim in the guise of medicine. Linda Stratmann will describe the sensational trials that alerted the public to what appeared to be a frightening new threat. As poison trails became more complex, expert witnesses, especially the forensic toxicologist who had become courtroom stars, began to find that a day in court could both make and destroy a promising career.

The Poisoner tells the story of William Palmer, hanged in 1856 before a crowd of 30,000 people for the murder of his best friend. An outwardly respectable Midlands doctor from a prosperous family, Palmer and his trial were a media sensation, heightening middle class fears about the insidiousness of poisoning as a new method of murder. Palmer was the first person ever to be convicted of using strychnine as a method of murder. He became known as the Prince of Poisoners, suspected of murdering at least a dozen people and Charles Dickens, who covered his case, described him as the greatest villain who ever stood trial in the Old Bailey. Even Queen Victoria followed the story, as her journal shows. But how many people did he really kill - and was his guilt ever proved? Stephen Bates's original research into the 160-year-old notorious murder case uncovered intriguing new information about the story.

The first speaker of Day One at the conference was Drew Gray, author of the book 'London's Shadows: The Dark Side of the Victorian City'. Gray spoke on 'Policing Whitechapel: The Role of the Thames Police Court in the 1880s'.
The eighth and final speaker at the conference was the great-grandson of PC Ernest Thompson, the constable who discovered the body of Frances Coles in Swallow Gardens while on his very first beat, and who nine years later as murdered while on duty.
The fourth speaker, and final speaker on Day One, was David Wickes, the man responsible for bringing the classic Jack the Ripper television series to production. One starring Barlow and Watt (1973) and Michael Caine (1988).
The third speaker on Day One was Chris Payne, author of the book 'The Chieftain: Victorian True Crime through the Eyes of a Scotland Yard Detective', about Detective Chief Inspector George Clarke and the 'Trial of the Detectives' of 1877.
