As a teen mentor, I want to share themes that I see regularly this time of year, so parents can know how to support their kids. I cover tips for going back to school in Jan, navigating college kids back home & what to look out for with mental health challenges, handling hype holidays like feeling pressure to have NYE plans, and working with middle school kids to move through any big feelings before heading back to school!

Feeling lonely is a completely human experience, but it can be so difficult! This topic has been floating through my private practice lately so I wanted to share with you here. There's obvious change that happens in life where you know it's coming like starting or graduating college, but then there’s not-so-obvious big changes like letting go of an old thought pattern or deciding you want something and figuring out how to go after it. We pay a lot of attention to the big changes, but I've found that most change comes from the sum of many subtle shifts. Today's pep talk is not about managing change, but more about when the change you want to see in your life isn't really happening, if you feel stuck, or what to think about when you want something to change.

“I’m not good enough.” “I’m not smart enough.” “I can’t do that.” Have you ever said any of those to yourself? The stories we tell ourselves (about ourselves) are incredibly important and believe it or not for many people, a life long story you create about yourself can start during high school. In today’s pep talk, I share some common high school stories that pop up during the college process, how they affect your present, and how to change your story if you don’t love the one you’re telling yourself.

Have you ever had someone be mean to you? Yeah, we've all been there. In today's pep talk, I share what it really means when someone is unkind to you and how this perspective can help you feel better.

“I can’t get motivated.” “I’m not being productive.” Have you felt that lately? There are so many reasons for burnout right now, but one hypothesis I have for a lack of drive is how we view our value. We’re used to measuring success based on productivity, but in a virtual school/work world it looks a lot different and it’s thrown us off. In this pep talk, I chat productivity, the effect of assigning output to our worth, and a mentor shift to help with motivation.

Ever have someone ask you how you’re doing and respond, “I’m good. How are you?” without giving it an ounce of thought? When we share what’s really going on with our friends and give space for them to share as well, it creates a deeper connection, which many of us old souls really look for. Today I’m sharing three questions to ask instead of, “how are you?” I love these because they’re clear to the person you're asking (including yourself) that you really care. They’re creative so they make you think and they’re quick! If you’re looking to build a deeper relationship with your friends and yourself, this is a great place to start.

A side effect of the pandemic I didn't expect was how hard it is to not have designated transition times. We used to have built in commutes, walks to class, in-person after school activities and meetings. It takes extra work now to signify the end of one thing and the start of another making a lot of life a blur right now.
During the Q&A portion of a talk I gave recently, a student asked: "How can I take a break?" The question struck me as incredibly important now that our lives are so digital. It reminded me of the tattoo story because what we connect to on our "off time" has become vital now that the pull of our devices is stronger than ever.
In today's pep talk, I share why breaks are important today more than ever, the mindful mentor way to think about taking a pause, and three basic break tips!

I've seen a confidence theme lately and it always starts with the same two words: I can't.
I can't apply to that college.
I can't ask that person to hang out.
I can’t apply to that job.
I can’t try out for that group.
Telling ourselves we can’t do something feels protective. No need to take a chance or get rejected, but it's really just holding you back. In today's pep talk, I share a confidence reframe because 99.9999% of the time what’s being described as a competence issue (I’m not good enough. I can’t do it.) is really just a confidence issue.

Any overthinkers out there? This is the pep-talk for you. When there's a lot going on in your mind and the world, grounding is an exercise that centers you for peace and calm. Ever walk into a room to grab something and can't remember what you went in for? Do you lose your keys? Shampoo your hair twice? These are signs of being ungrounded. Sometimes it’s also a response to anxiety. I gave a big talk once that meant a lot to me. I got up to the podium and totally started to panic. I couldn't feel my legs. I felt very untethered; a big sign of being ungrounded. Today’s pep talk is a grounding meditation to center your mind and body and root you into the present moment. Ever been called an old soul?
For me, an old soul is someone who is wise and deep. They’re people who are self-reflective, introspective, and thoughtful about themselves and the world. I find that a lot of old souls can be very empathetic or pick up on the feelings of others, but I'm just going to come out and say it: I think old souls can sometimes have a harder time fitting in. If you want to feel happier, shift your confidence, have better friendships, attract a romantic partner, and improve your body, I have one life tweak you can make that can lead to big shifts. It's all about the small steps on the pep talk podcast today!
Every Sunday I get a little ding on my phone that tells me how much screen time I've had that week and every time I see it I'm pretty horrified... and yet I consistently do nothing about it... until a few weeks ago.
When you're aware of the life happening right in front of you, right in the present moment, right in your present body, you're able to be open for what's meant for you, for what you want, and for what you're calling in.

"What should I do?" I hear this question all the time as a mentor. Confusion can be uncomfortable (not to mention lonely). It's sometimes hard to make sense of life's changes and challenges! In my pep talk today, I share my magic tricks. They're simple ways to use tarot cards, animals, and even spotify as an oracle for life guidance. When you connect to your inner-self, you're able to trust in the unfolding of your life, recognize your path, and move forward in areas that feel stuck.
Jealously has been a sneaky side effect of the pandemic. It's easy to think that someone has it better than you when there are all different levels of school and work opening for fall. Jealously can actually be used in a really positive way if you know what to do with it. Today's pep-talk, I share how a moment of jealously helped me and how you can use it to get what you want in your life.
This bonus meditation comes at the request of a listener. Frustrated? Annoyed? Feel like every day is groundhogs day? Cool. Me too. I'm sharing the meditation I use to help me accept what's happening, move through frustration, and make room for the things I really do want in my life. I use this meditation daily!
The pandemic has turned college admissions upside down. Without SAT/ACT scores, extracurriculars, and with semesters of pass/fail grades, the traditional admissions rubric no longer works. This is a huge opportunity as more weight shifts towards a student's character making essays, interviews, and recommendations essential. In this episode, I share my #1 tip to stand out in college essays and cover letters. Knowing who you are, why you want to be a student at a specific school, and how to articulate it, is now crucial. This is a pandemic shift I am actually excited about!
I know there's so much unknown right now (like what will Fall 2020 look like?) and how uncomfortable uncertainty can be especially for college students and recent grads who are already undergoing major transitions. You don't just have to wait and worry until things get figured out. I actually feel there's a lot of opportunity if you have the right support! In this pep-talk I share the tips that have helped me navigate this time of uncertainty!
Welcome to the podcast Megan McDowell, MSW, LPC, Founder & Chief Visionary Officer of Heartworks, and my mentor! This is a feelings centered episode. If you're someone who worries or has ever been called sensitive... this is for YOU. Megan is so special to me and I'm grateful to share this conversation.
I'm excited to announce I started a new series interviewing my mentors. These are the people I go to when I need guidance and I thought it could be fun to bring them on here to talk about some of the things I chat about in my sessions. Today's episode is with my friend, intuitive counselor, Peri Zarrella. We talk about essence energy (don’t worry, we explain it), listening to your intuition, and what aligned decisions feel like. I also ask her a ton of questions about trusting yourself. Peri has an epic way of holding space and giving language to things that can be hard define! She also gives me a little essence energy reading too! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!
