We understand we're all on a life-long journey of discovering who God is and a more accurate perception of ourselves. We realize that God has in his imagination an idea of who we can become that is not possible without His grace that accepts us as we are and, at the very same time, calls us forward to live like Jesus did. It means we've taken our hands off the religious panic button, and abandoned quick answers and worn out rhetoric, and dare to engage in an open dialogue about faith and the things of life knowing that participating in God's activity wherever and however is what is truly relevant.

Everybody does the opposite of their stereotypes, including the pagans and including Jonah. The only person who seems true to form is God.” This satirical account we have a mirror image of us as humanity.
We are continuing our series on the book of Jonah. David looks at the inconsistent character of Jonah and how it contrasts with God's character of love. We are starting a new series, What God are you talking about, a series that is making sense of theology. God is a divisive word and generates a wide variety of opinions and reactions. David unpacks how the early Christians made sense of God by looking at Jesus. All theology begins and ends with Jesus.
We are finishing up, The Age of the Algorithm, series, where David unpacks Luke 2:41-52. Jesus reversed the Eden story in which he puts his Father in the middle of the story rather than himself. Jesus is doing his Fathers'_____ (fill in the blank.) Rather than trying to bolster ourselves up we need to be like Jesus and put God in the centre of the story.
David Harvey continues our, Age of the Algorithm, series preaching from Matthew 26:36-46. We as humans have high expectations for ourselves the "Self-Help" industry has taken advantage of this. It’s not that I don’t pray it’s that I pray unaware. David explores the idea of the unawareness of prayer and we actually pray far more often than we probably realize. Prayer is much more expansive than we realize and also has a really low bar. Christin then joins David to talk about rote prayers and the value they add to our prayer life.

We start our new series on prayer where we will engage on the questions of why we should pray and does prayer actually help? Prayer for many people is associated with guilt because we believe we don't do it well and/or don't do it enough. This series will hopefully encourage people to pray more because God just wants us to start praying and asking for help.
David finishes off our series, "the Cost of Privilege" preaching from Acts 16:16-40. David discusses how Paul and Silas use their privilege to further the Kingdom by dismantling oppressive and corrupt systems rather than using it for their own interests.
Tyson continues our series on the cost of privilege. Tyson speaks on the story of Zacchaeus and how Zacchaeus is a model for transformation from the mindset of scarcity to a mindset of abundance in which the Kingdom provides. We often seek wealth and power because it we believe there is not enough resources to go around. The Kingdom of God however, there is more than enough and we can share it, especially with those who have very little.
David continues our series discussing privilege and what it looks like to be Jesus centred while in pursuit of justice. David delves into the story of Exodus 2:1-10 where Pharaoh’s daughter becomes a model for us regarding how one responsibly stewards privilege for the furtherance of the kingdom and the good of neighbor. What starts as compassion grows into conviction and matures into a rigorous commitment to justice.

We are excited to bring back one of our favourite reoccurring series on habit. It is epiphany and our teacher is Marisa Aud who is speaking on Matthew 12: 1-12. It was to the Magi that Christ was revealed showing that there are none too far that they can’t be received by God and welcomed into his Kingdom.
Christin finishes off our Advent series preaching on Marry's profound prayer the magnificat. Mary's prayer subverts our expectations on what a Kingdom looks like and how God's peace is far different than what we would expect.
Tyson McCombs continues our series on Advent preaching from Zephaniah 3. Tyson speaks on joy and how In the midst of a broken world God is our joy. We find our joy in the knowledge that God is near and will not forsake us but will redeem all things.
David Harvey continues the Advent series speaking from Malachi 3:1-4 and Luke 3:1-6. Waiting is hard, especially in times of transition and uncertainty. A wide variety of emotions occur in times of transition and it is important to know they are valid especially at Westside. Feeling safe and feeling heard is an important value for the leadership team here at Westside.
Phil Aud begins the season of Advent teaching on both reading and telling the times. Preaching from Jeremiah 33:14-16 and Luke 21:25-36, Phil shows us that in times which seem to be good is where Jeremiah and Jesus gave warning but in times of devastation Jeremiah and Jesus spoke hope. Phil once again asks the question are we as a Church reading and telling the time?

David Harvey and Phil Aud have a discussion on the nature of worship and what good worship is. Worship first and foremost has to do with God and Gods work within us. True God shaped worship is contrary to the narcissistic, ego driven style where it is all about me and my feelings which is so prevalent in our culture.
David Harvey asks the question what matters to us? Are we more concerned with developing a great resume or seeking to have a eulogy that exemplifies goodness. David takes a look at Genesis 4 in which the Cain and Able story forces us to ask the question, "am I my brothers keeper?" According to Jesus we are and we need to establish habits that promote goodness and seek the well being of others.

David and Tyson kick off our new series working along side Scot McKnights book, "A Church Called TOV." They begin the conversation by discussing how culture is created and nurturing an empathy culture over narcissism.
Tyson speaks on Psalm 127 and the radical call of slow obedience in the same direction. Tyson discusses the tower of Babel from Genesis 11 and how that contrasts God plans in which God must build the house or the builders labor in vain.
David Harvey speak on the importance of Sabbath in a society that forces us to prove ourselves by our effectiveness and ability. Sabbath is rooted in goodness and reminds us that we are human and God is the Lord of the universe. Sabbath is a contemplative guide to safety that helps us avoid the traps of cultures versions of greatness.
David Harvey, with special guest Holly Fortier, discuss racial reconciliation, indigenous peoples and injustice. Don't miss out on an incredible conversation on how God speaks to the terrible injustices of our time in both speaking truth to it but also offering hope.
David begins a new series where he discusses cultures fixation on greatness and how the bible contrasts that with the idea of good. David engages with Genesis 1, in which God sees his creation as good and creates humans to further the goodness of creation. It is only when humans seek greatness at the expense of the other, rather than seeking their goodness, that creation is distorted. We are excited to go on this journey together as we seek to be a Church that is good to each other and our neighbour.

Misreading the trajectory of Christian hope often means that we assume our “aim” is to get away from earth, when the biblical message about resurrection and Christian future is about “on earth as it is in heaven”. A healthy Christian Theology involves looking beyond “what happens when I die” to rather ask “what happens when God restores all things”?

Non-christian ideas of “Heaven and Hell” have influenced Christians to think about these ideas more than Resurrection. We need to explore what is meant by resurrection in the Bible and how it connects to God’s ideas of justice and putting the world right again. Many theologies of “afterlife” don’t conquer death, but rather just side-step it. When Christians have a bad view of “life after death” it makes them worse at living “life before death”.
There is lots of confusion amongst Christians (and the wider world) about what happens after we die. Evidenced in shows like “the good place” and “Upload” we see the common idea of a disembodied “soul” future that is worked out on the basis of merit in a “different” place. This is despite the New Testament offering a clear picture of what God intends for the future in the Empty Tomb. The empty tomb not only gives us a clue about what God intends, but it also shows us that it’s not about going somewhere else, but rather is about what God is going to do, and is doing, here on earth.

What happens when we have preconceived expectations of how we think things are supposed to work. The big question of the sermon is "Is that actually how Jesus works?"
Can our understanding of grace actually support a theology known as the "Prosperity Gospel". Join David and Tyson as they continue to discuss how Jesus defines wealth for our lives and what it means to "not store up your treasures on earth where moth and rust detroy..."
David explore the difference between Compassion and Numbness as he concludes our Edge of the City teaching series.
How would Jesus define wealth? And how does grace play a part in shaping our mindset around wealth and scarcity? Listen below to find out!
How does the church "seek wholeness" for its city? How do we as individuals do the same?
The role of prophet in the Bible was never an easy one. Perhaps it went something like this: don’t be so involved in city life that you forget what God called you to, but don't be so distant from the city that they forget who you are. Simply put, the art of the prophetic calling was to live at the edge of the city, to perform the delicate balance of being both engaged but different, relevant but challenging.
Do we have enough? How do we change our perspective on what we have and what we can give?
Are we Blessed? The answer to that is obvious, but what if it’s not the question that the Bible wants us to ask?
Tyson McCombs explores how Paul’s understanding of his own identity might guide us in our own search for identity.
The beginning of a new recurring series for WKC. Listen as David gives a brief overview to St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians and why this letter will guide us as we navigate the interesting times in which we live.
David talks with psychologist Geri Fitch about our personal anger and some strategies that might help us.
We live in a world that increasingly seems to be energised by tapping into our rage and dividing us all
The extreme side of anger presents itself to us as outrage - that visceral, blood-pumping desire to ensure that you win and someone else loses.
We bring our series “Doubt” to a conclusion by pointing out what happens when we slow down to pay attention - our loneliness, our uncertainty, our questions might be easier to deal with when we return to familiar space.
In this teaching David is joined by Phil Aud for a conversation about where Jesus meets us in our doubt and uncertainty. Is Jesus with us always, even when we're not sure?
Two disciples walk to an unknown town - how does this help us navigate our uncertainty today?
We step aside from our planned series to discuss how we find Grace and navigate opportunity in a time of crisis.
If you talk about anger around Christians for long enough eventually someone will say that their anger, unlike everybody else’s, is righteous anger. What does that even mean?
The extreme side of anger presents itself to us as outrage - that visceral, blood-pumping desire to ensure that you win and someone else loses.
Our obsession with productivity does more than simply affect how we work, it leaks into our rest and play also.
Jesus once told a parable to teach us that life is not about the stuff we gather. It’s probably fair to say that we’ve been resistant to this lesson.
The biblical story begins with a garden and ends with a city, but what happens in between?
Sometimes we will only accept a cure or a solution. The Bible offers us something called lament.
How does a person make the choice to step away from the familiar, comfortable and secure to follow what they believe God is calling them to?
What do we lose when when we strip the birth of Jesus down to sentimentality or sanitise it to make it more palatable or even tolerable?
Like Joseph at the beginning of the Christmas story, we all live in a world where we engage in impression management.
Why is it that at Christmas, more than other times of the year, Christians seem to increase their pursuit of the “spiritual” over the “materialistic”? We ask this because the tradition of celebrating Christmas is rooted in God become “material”. The incarnation celebrates God-made-flesh and being amongst us.
In this teaching we thought a little bit more about what it looks like to think of church less as something that we come to but as something that we are. Even something that we do.
We return to think again about the church, and the church we might become. Language of vision and mission can often sound pretentious and over-confident. We don’t want to be like that. But we do want to ask an important question. What would we like things to be like in 100 years? What type of world, city, church will our grand children grow old in?
The everyday scene in the ancient world of a potter forming a pot from clay is the scene we focus on as we end this series.
The Hebrew phrase "Shuv Shevut" is deeply embedded in Jeremiah. It could just mean "Return" or it could mean so much more than that.
What’s Jeremiah’s big issue with idols? Why does he think they are worth so much attention?
Why are things the way they are in the world? We want someone to blame, and in Jeremiah we might get an answer, but we might not like it.
We begin this series on Jeremiah asking about how he finds his purpose and identity in life, and how we might do the same.
We all meet Jesus with a story. How he engages with us in that story is always a surprise.
Like the Israelites, we often find ourselves in “Exile”. The state of being in a situation that we don’t want to be in.
We think retrospectively about how our community was imagined in the past and challenge ourselves to continue in the grace journey that we started upon.
We head into our 25th year as a community. What does our journey look like? Where might we be going? Our lead pastor talks about three areas of trust in God for our church.
When we live with unlimited choices it’s easy to become fragmented and broken. But how should we respond when our internal fragmentation becomes sin. And should we even talk about sin anymore?
What do we do with our ambitions? How easy is it for us to develop an attitude to God that is about striving? How often is that striving about control?
Not many of us get through life without praying that things could be different. But what do you do when God isn’t listening?
Following Jesus doesn’t always seem to follow the simple script that our tradition sometimes leads us to expect.
