Welcome to The Dad Business If someone showed you the job description of being a Dad or running a business - no-one would want to do either, would they? But for many of us we feel compelled to do both. Are we mad? Maybe. Do we love it? Most of the time! This podcast is all about sharing what we have learned - from our Dad's, from life, from business and from being a Dad. The podcast that makes you happy, sad, laugh and cry whilst you create great businesses and great kids And as a bonus - Stories for your kids; Strategies to grow your business; Books and resources to stretch your mind. Nigel
How do you balance this 1st World problem? Go out and do something or stay in and stare at a screen?
Every parent wants to do the right thing. But when your kids have you wrapped around their little finger, can you be the big baddy and lay down the law?
Or are we just as bad as the kids because we spend too much time on screens?
Jamie joins me (very reluctantly) for a walk to ponder this question...
Have you got one?
Did you know you needed one?
In fact, the best in the world all seem to have one. And if you don't have one then that might be why you are not one of the best.
It will make you happier, healthier and wealthier...apparently.
So that's why I am experimenting on myself to see if it is true!
The experiment has started...
Who are these people? The ones who set up traffic lights for no reason other than to ruin your journey. Sort it OUT!!!
Whilst on holiday you’re meant to relax aren’t you? That can be hard with the crack of dawn sunbed race, YouTube, Wi-fi, laptops and oceans of plastic. Thankfully Jamie is here to talk us through it!
Mission Impossible?
We've seen the movies...impossible? Nah, it's definitely possible if you know how.
Today I tell you HOW to achieve the work-life balance and it might not be what you think
Am I right?
Let me know at dad@thedadbusiness.com
This episode is brought to you with altitude!! We are 2300m up in the mountains today wondering where the time has gone, why we are missing a child and how to get an Alsatian dog to never bother you again!!!
Imagine having a member of staff who is happy to work 24/7, with no holidays, never goes sick and best of all doesn't want paying - how many would you want for your business???
Exactly! Loads!!
And you can - with a chatbot.
A whatbot?
A chat robot >>> chatbot that's what!
I am talking through some of the reasons why a chatbot would be perfect for your business and how Nigel and his business partner Si Hearn help businesses design, build and run chatbots to get new customers, more sales and more money.

Ever played Monopoly?
You know, the game designed to bring out the competitive streak in people, bring good friends to blows, ruin families for years...yes that one.
So what could possibly go wrong with playing it with your 3 kids?!
Deals, double-crossing, jail time - surely this is all part of a fun, family evening?
Maybe.
But the crucial question remains...
Who won the game?
Listen now to find out...!
Work Life Balance.
Is it possible? Well if you love your business then sometimes we don't have the energy to play with our kids.
And I want my kids to remember some fun times of messing around with me.
It can be hard though can't it? Your knackered and yet your kids are full of energy. They want you to play. Do you get up and play or tell them to go play by themselves. We probably do both. But when we get older and reflect on how we spent our time, will we remember the work or the play with happier memories?
And what will be the memories for our kids?!
Let me take you on a guilt trip...haha! Go on, get up from the sofa and play with your kids.
Balloon tennis anyone? 😂
Imagine you are way in the future and you get the chance to go back and rethink some of the business partnerships and deals you did. If you could would you go back and change them?
Chances are that you are nodding and thinking of some howlers that cost you dearly in time, money, emotions and much more.
So today we look at THE DIRTY DOZEN signs that you should look out for because they may just stop you making one of those BAD moves!!
Do you agree with them?
Are there some other useful signs that we should look for?
Drop me a line at dad@thedadbusiness.com
Here are those dirty dozen:
Long time between messages or communications
Your gut feel
The information or story keeps changing
Get out of BED - no-one takes responsibility
They nitpick and disagree over minor details
No one talks about money/returns/equity
Bait and switch
They go dark and don’t respond at all
No questions or concerns about the deal
They don't sign appropriate non-disclosure terms
Your values are in conflict
Quick to point out problems but never offer solutions
The biggest worry for me is that I am no good as a Dad.
Is it a rational thought?
Well it comes into focus when your child turns 18 and becomes an adult because that's it - your job of raising a child is done!
And the results are in...you were...?
Good? Brilliant? Average? Rubbish?
It may be that only time will tell.
But if you could go back in time and give yourself some advice, what would that advice be?
In this episode I look back (and forward) and consider the 3 things that I would love to have really been able to understand and do more of if I could have gone back in time.
What would you change?
Hey Everyone, thank you for joining me and this week we explore whether a family business can work and if so how?
We all know family businesses are a recipe for disaster, right?
They start ok but then it splits a family, don't they?
Maybe not all of them...
I am joined by my brother-in-law Richard Hepworth to find out the secret to growing and running a family business.
And because it is The Dad Business, how he manages to do business, family and compete in IronMan competitions.
Impossible? Not so according to Richard - focus is what you need.
Other key lessons include recruit and build a team to grow the business and do it sooner than we did!
“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning, and if it is your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” - Mark Twain.
How does this apply to The Dad Business? This episode explains all!
We walk through the book by Brian Tracy called 'Eat That Frog' - it's all about being productive, focused and time efficient.
Do you do any of what he suggests already? Maybe it's a few, maybe it's none. Whatever it is I am sure you could benefit from some of them!
There is no easy way to dress this episode up. When someone you know, who is in the Dad Business, dies then it stops you in your tracks and makes you think.
I have thought about sharing this episode for months and finally I have chosen to share it. I don't know if that is the right thing to do but difficult topics sometimes mean a difficult choice.
Let me know if you think I made the right choice or not.
"When hard work meets opportunity, it looks a lot like luck" - Casanova Brooks.
Whoever thinks that a tough start, with little money in the inner city means a life of little hope, choice or dreams hasn't met Casanova Brooks.
Without Dad being there it was Mum, Grandma and other relatives that gave the love, encouragement and belief that you can be anything you want to be. And Casanova took that and ran with it. No home to owning rental properties!
A fascinating insight into someone who believes - in themselves, in building relationships and in a family legacy.
This episode is a little bit longer than normal but I didn't want it any shorter. In fact there were so many other rabbit holes I wanted to explore but didn't - there will have to be a next time :)
Listen out for why you would want to email your kids!! Brilliant!!
Find out more at casanovabrooks.com - maybe he is talking at an event near you, if so then go listen to him in person.
What can I say - today's deep and meaningful discussion about passive income being a myth was (thankfully 😜) hijacked by Jamie. So the podcast started poorly, got worse and then the wheels came off. Did we learn anything about passive income or more about the state of the school swimming pool??!! Who knows? Listen and make up your own mind!
Welcome 2019! Are you excited?
If this is the year that you go from Dad to Dad + Business then WOW! There are a million plus points to running your own business but probably the same number (in your head!!) to say you shouldn't.
In this episode you discover how chance meetings, serendipity and all the rest may be given you the signals that now is the time to start that business.
Check out www.businessprofitclub.co.uk to see how Nigel is helping many people start and grow their online business in 2019.
Whether you read on a kindle, listen through Audible or hold the physical item, you have to consume books!
Stats show that business CEOs and owners read 50 a year whereas most people struggle to read 1 a year.
Notice a link?!
Here are my favourite 5 from 2018 out of about 75. Some I read many many times others just the once. I explain what I got from them and how they have helped me.
Will you enjoy them? Yes. And each of these books will add something to your business. Guaranteed!! Write to me if they don't :)

The Dad Business - Episode 12 Birthdays, Christmas and Fortnite - what I learned!
When you have family birthdays close to Christmas how do you keep them separate? Do you combine them?
And if you had a party that went wrong, why on earth would you do the same thing again??
And who is to blame when Birthday money is spent badly?
All this and more I learned in a few short days!!
The Law of Attraction is a load of rubbish isn’t it? How can it help your business and can you explain it to your kids?! Can you use it to control the weather??
How was your 2018? Did you set some goals? Did you achieve your goals? This episode lifts the lid on the goal setting snobs who set you up to FAIL! How to think of your goals like compound interest rather than a get-rich-quick scheme. Make 2019 your (Nigel T) Best year yet!
On today's show I welcome a serial entrepreneur, ex-forces, public speaking, raising money guru & podcasting Dad - Ray McLennan. We co-host the How To Raise Money Podcast (if you didn't know!!) How can 8 year old can make you feel nervous about your performance as a Dad? Easy Just ask them to score you out of 10!! Sometimes we need to stop, ask and listen to our kids. We may not like everything they say - but isn't the point of feedback to listen, to say thank you and then use it to get better?
Sometimes even the people who are there to teach us will look at something and say it is IMPOSSIBLE! This episode explores what can happen if you believe it might just be POSSIBLE. And as a bonus for us Dad's, there is no better memory than when you saw your child happy. BIG TAKE AWAY - how do you know it's not possible until you give it a go?
Hey my friends have you ever just kept drifting along in neutral waiting for a deadline to get so serious you really need to pull your finger out?! In this episode I discuss how strange it is that for some of us we need that deadline to actually start doing things! WARNING! If you are super-organised, then you will be shaking your head. A lot!
We may all want to have a business that performs better without you and turns into an investment so that we can spend our precious time with our kids - don't we? Sometimes the reality of making that happen can be a bit different. But today's guest, founder of Guerrilla Investors.com, Stephen Wallis thinks he can show you alternative investments that can do just that. Stephen also shares the plans he has for his kids in about 3 years time when they are 6 and 9 years old - would you do that? TOP POINTS: 'life is made up of memories', 'Fun. If you aren't having fun then what's the point?" Contact Stephen at: https://guerrillainvestors.com/
