Most of us are UNINTENTIONAL with screens, but the architects within the tech industry intentionally make their content distracting, manipulative, and addictive. My conversation with Doug Smith, author of the best-selling book [UN]INTENTIONAL, shows how our obsession with screens can take us to places we regret. And in his book, he unpacks a biblical approach to breaking free from our addiction to screens. This conversation, and Doug’s book, are essential tools for men as we strive to lead ourselves and our families with integrity and intentionality.

Men today face many challenges, including depression, apathy, and a general lack of purpose, arguably resulting from the soft lifestyles we have the luxury of living in our modern age. To compensate and reclaim key components of masculinity, men must replace physical work once associated with survival with physical training at home or in the gym.

In this episode, my guest, Jordan Miller of Run2Gun, helps me break down the many benefits of physical fitness. We talk about the importance of having a growth mindset, how improved fitness leads to better performance, and how the discipline we develop in the gym bleeds into every area of life because training is a metaphor for life.

There are few things more grotesque and evil than the exploitation of women and children for sexual gain. Sadly, there's an entire industry devoted to it, fueled by the insatiable sexual appetites of men around the world. David Zach, the lead singer/songwriter for the band Remedy Drive, joins the show to talk about his role with The Exodus Road, a counter-trafficking organization committed to cracking down on the criminal networks responsible for trafficking women and teenagers around the world. This is a problem created by men, and it will require good men like David Zach to step up and take action if we hope to bring it to an end.

Between what we see happening overseas, economic unknowns, COVID-related policies that impact our way of life, and much more, there are plenty of things that can consume a man’s thoughts these days, especially when it comes to politics. I’ll be the first to raise my hand that I’ve been guilty. For many months, I have wrestled with an unhealthy amount of anger and frustration about what I see happening in the world around me, and I haven’t been afraid to share my opinions on social media (which is pointless). In fact, I have let my anger and my passionate love of country become an idol in my life, and I see it happening to Christian men everywhere. Join me and my co-host, Jacob Green, as we unpack this topic, what it can mean for your faith life, and some ways to right the ship before it’s too late. I’m committing myself to be better and I would like you to join me.

I grew up with immense respect for our servicemen and women and have long believed that their experiences have a lot to teach us—if we would listen. That's why I'm excited to introduce John Mollison, an award-winning artist, and filmmaker who, in his words, "interviews old guys and draws their airplanes."

But John's work is so much more. It not only captures stories from some of our nation's greatest heroes but provides opportunities for us to learn from their life experiences so that we might become better husbands, fathers, and leaders.

I really enjoyed this conversation and hope you'll be enriched by it as well.

Be sure to check out the show notes from this episode to see the images referenced in our conversation, as well as John's artwork and links to specific films of his that he felt The Inspired Legacy audience would enjoy.

In this episode, I talk with Pastor IV Marsh. He’s the founder and CEO of the global men’s summit, IAM4. Listen in as we unpack what this men’s movement toward God is all about and dive deep into Biblical masculinity and the specific roles God designed men.

In this episode, I talk with Senator John Thune. As someone in the spotlight and under constant scrutiny from the opposition, he has remained true to himself and his heritage, guided by his faith and conviction in Jesus Christ.

During our conversation, we touched on a range of topics, from how his upbringing shaped him into the man he is today to how God uses people and opportunities to reveal His plans.

We also discuss why we must all remain prayerful as our culture continues to shift away from God at an alarming speed.

I don't want to offend anyone with this episode, but I do want to challenge you. If you find yourself clinging to fear, where is your hope?

There are a lot of kids out there who lack a consistent father figure or anyone to help steer them through adolescence. This fact does not bode well for our society and is a huge threat to our nation.

The good news is, change is possible through the power and impact of mentorship. To help me unpack this topic, I’m joined by Dr. Tom Osborne, former coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and founder of TeamMates Mentoring, a program serving thousands of boys and girls across the midwest.

Tom is a husband, father, and grandfather, but also a legendary leader and motivator. While talking about mentorship, he also shares some profound wisdom as it relates to integrating faith into our everyday lives. Trust me, you do not want to miss this episode!

Our culture is obsessed with evil. If you need proof, look no further than Hollywood, which has largely built its empire on stories involving the occult. But are the claims of possession, exorcism, and demons real? And if so, what should we as Christians and parents know about them as they pertain to spiritual warfare?

My guest in this episode is Billy Hallowell, an investigative journalist whose latest book, Playing With Fire: A Modern Investigation into Demons, Exorcism, and Ghosts, dives deep into this topic. Join us as we unpack all you need to know about evil forces and how they can impact our lives.

This episode is part one of a two-part interview with Major Jordan Northrup, a 17-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Jordan joined the Marines after the terror attacks of September 11th and during his career has served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. SPECIAL FATHER'S DAY EPISODE: Dads, never doubt the critical role you play in your home or your children's lives. I cannot emphasize this enough, which is why I thought it was appropriate to dust off this top-rated episode from season one, featuring New York Times best-selling author, Dr. Warren Farrell.

In his book titled "The Boy Crisis," Farrell points out that in 70 of the world's largest developed nations, boys have fallen behind girls. And he calls attention to two categories of boys that are now emerging in today's psychological literature: dad-deprived boys and dad-enriched boys.

The data and research provided by Farrell in this episode simply underscore the importance of fathers in today's society, and he gives a few examples of how fatherlessness can (and has) led to very tragic circumstances.

What You'll Hear:

  • Why boys grow up to hurt others
  • How we can channel boys to be healthier and less destructive
  • The role a father plays in helping his son find purpose
  • And hear about the power of purpose in a boy's life
  • Hear insight into why 90% of mass shooters are dad-deprived males
  • Hear why our prison system is a home for dad-deprived males
  • Learn the number one cause for crisis among boy
  • Hear how inner-city crime is directly influenced by father involvement
  • Learn why divorced couples must NOT speak negatively about each other in front of their children
  • Learn about the different parenting styles and roles of moms vs dads
  • Hear how rough-house style play positively impacts boys and equips them for their future

In today's episode, I discuss three attributes I look for in individuals before welcoming them into my inner circle—those in whom I trust and confide in the most. And these attributes can be used as a measuring stick to evaluate the relationships in your life. Have you surrounded yourself with friends who uplift you or hold you back? It's a question worth asking.

Suicide is a growing problem, especially amongst middle-aged fathers. This month, which is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I wanted to dedicate an episode to this growing epidemic. Here are some shocking statistics:

  • Every twelve minutes a life is lost to suicide
  • Every day 117 people take their own life
  • For every suicide, there are 25 attempted suicides
  • There are nearly 43,000 suicides committed in our country each year
  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States
  • Men are 3.5 times more likely to commit suicide than women

With numbers like these, this is an issue we cannot ignore and a conversation we must have.

My guest today is Brad Hearst. He is the founder of Survivors Joining For Hope, an organization he founded to help those who have been impacted by suicide.

Thanks for listening and share this important episode with friends, family, and coworkers!

Our kids remember the time we spend with them, not the things we buy them. Crafting meaningful experiences that we can share with our kids is one of the most effective ways to strengthen our relationship with them.

My guest today is Nigel J Bennett, author of Take That Leap, Risking It All For What REALLY Matters. He is also an accomplished entrepreneur, speaker, philanthropist, and family man who, along with his wife, designed an experiential lifestyle for their family. My guest today is Adam Weber, lead pastor of Embrace Church, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; author of Talking With God: What to Say When You Don’t Know How to Pray, as well as the host of the podcast, The Conversation.

Today, Adam and I chat about the concept of “running the race” (Hebrews 12:1) from the perspective of being a husband and father. When we ask ourselves if we are running the race well, that should cause us to take stock of our priorities, our work ethic, how we treat people, and to what degree we are living out our faith in front of our family. These are a few of the metrics we can use to determine if we are running the race well and it’s a sampling of what Adam and I discuss in this episode.

If you are struggling and looking for hope and encouragement in this race, as well as some practical tips on how to finish strong, then this episode is for you.

Key points include:

  • The importance of reevaluating our priorities
  • The importance of (truly) placing your identity in Christ
  • There is opportunity found in each new day
  • Why you should always strive to say “YES” to your child’s invitation to play
  • The power of inviting your kids to participate in your world
  • Letting your kids witness you living out your faith

If you want to make a positive impact on a child’s life, consider coaching youth sports. This episode features Andy Traub. He is a veteran youth coach who has developed practical methods of helping kids navigate their emotions for improved performance. He also shares the many ways coaches can build up players and help them play to their potential without losing love for the game, along with much more. If you’re a parent-coach or merely a supportive sideline parent, you’ll be able to apply much of this conversation to your child’s next season. And even if your kid isn’t into sports, there are concepts discussed here that can apply to anyone. Key concepts covered in the show: * How to recognize frustration early and turn it into positive energy * Why every dad is more equipped to coach than they realize * The implications of living vicariously through your child's performance * Why we mustn't let our child's performance influence how it makes us feel * Why constructive feedback should be the only feedback we provide * The difference between coaching to win and coaching for development, and why coaches must set this expectation with players and parents early * Why it's essential for kids to not just play to their potential, but seek enjoyment as well * How it's possible to advise by asking the right questions * The most important thing to say to your kid after a loss

SPECIAL FATHER'S DAY EPISODE: Dads, never doubt the critical role you play in your home or your children's lives.

The epidemic of fatherlessness has been building for decades and is now sweeping the globe. Its impact is being felt around the world—specifically with boys.

To help explain this, my guest today is, Dr. Warren Farrell, author of the bombshell book titled "The Boy Crisis."

In this book, Dr. Farrell points out that in 70 of the world's largest developed nations, boys have fallen behind girls. And he calls attention to two categories of boys that are now emerging in today's psychological literature: dad-deprived boys and dad-enriched boys.

The data and research provided by Farrell in this episode simply underscore the importance of fathers in today's society, and he provides a few examples of how fatherlessness can (and has) led to very tragic circumstances.

  • Learn the number one cause for crisis among boys
  • Hear how inner-city crime is directly influenced by father involvement
  • Learn why divorced couples must NOT speak negatively about each other in front of their children
  • Learn about the different parenting styles and roles of moms vs dads
  • Hear how rough-house style play positively impacts boys and equips them for their future

Dr. Farrell has authored numerous works which have been published in over 50 countries, and 15 languages, including two award-winning international best-sellers titled, "Why Men Are the Way They Are" and "The Myth of Male Power."

Farrell has been chosen by the Financial Times as one of the world's top 100 thought leaders. He's taught at the university level in five disciplines, and appeared on more than 1,000 TV and radio shows, from Oprah to Larry King Live. He's also been featured repeatedly in Forbes, The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Video games are a way of life. In fact, there are more than two billion gamers in the world, including 150 million in the United States. Studies show that 3–4% of these gamers struggle with video game addiction. Those are epidemic numbers. And the World Health Organization recently declared video game addiction as a legitimate mental health disorder.

Because video games aren’t going anywhere, we all need to better educate ourselves about the risks involved so we can help our kids develop a healthy relationship with games and technology as a whole.

In this episode, I talk with Cam Adair. He is an international speaker and leading expert on video game addiction. Cam is the founder of Game Quitters, the world’s largest support community for video game addiction. His work has been published in Psychiatry Research (a peer-reviewed medical journal on psychiatry), he has been featured in two TEDx talks as well as NPR, BBC, Forbes, ABC 20/20, CNN, VICE, and Bloomberg, among many others.

What You’ll Learn

  • Hear about Cam's own struggle with video game addiction
  • Warning signs that might indicate your child has a problem
  • How to handle a child or teen that doesn’t think they have a problem
  • A parent’s role in helping their child develop a healthy relationship with technology
  • The impact of using technology to “babysit” our kids
  • Specific aspects of games that make them addictive (what to watch for)
  • The impact of prolonged exposure to overstimulation from games and devices
  • The financial risks to parents if we’re not familiar with a game’s functionality
  • The gaming industry is extremely powerful—but just how powerful? (this will blow your mind)
  • What makes many games predatory in nature
  • The long term consequences of raising an entire generation of gamers
  • What parents can do to help equip our kids to deal with these threats
  • The effects gaming has on a child’s perception of the real world and in turn, their young adulthood
  • We know the impact gaming and technology has had on teens, but scientists have no data indicating what it might be doing to the brains of very young children (ages 1–5)
  • The most dangerous types of video games for kids

Have you ever read the Bible? For many men, reading the Bible is a challenge. With all of the pressures and outside commitments of being a dad, it's easy to feel like we don't have time to read, let alone read the Bible. And there’s a lot of misconceptions about the Bible—what it is, what it isn’t, its overarching structure and message, so a lot of guys are intimidated by the book.

However, many men realize it’s something they should do, so when they do try to make time to read the Bible, they attempt to read it cover-to-cover. That's just too big of a goal when you're just starting.

As dads and spiritual leaders of the home, it’s critical that we understand God’s Word so we can apply it to our daily lives and effectively teach our kids about it. But we obviously can’t do that if we’re not reading and studying it regularly.

My guest today is on a mission to help all of us bridge that gap. His name is Matt Whitman. Matt is a pastor at Free Church in Lander, WY as well as the creator of the YouTube channel The Ten Minute Bible Hour.

Our conversation touched on a variety of topics including:

  • You don’t have to believe the words of the Bible to be a great dad, but the wisdom found in the Bible equip men to experience the full purpose of fatherhood.
  • We need to understand the world we live in so we can equip our kids with the knowledge they’ll need to thrive within it.
  • Skeptics of Christianity should consider the undeniable practical wisdom found in the Bible that has stood the test of time. If there were no value there, it would have died out a long time ago.
  • Good places to start reading the Bible as it pertains to the ideas and execution of fatherhood.
  • Matt reminds us that practical takeaways from the Bible are great, but if we don’t use them as tools and tactics to dive deeper into the broader message of the Gospel, then we’re missing a larger opportunity to discover our true purpose.

And you won’t want to miss Matt’s interpretation of what it means to leave an inspired legacy. He had a great response!

You can find Matt at The Minute Bible Hour (http://thetmbh.com).

Also, check out No Dumb Questions (nodumbquestions.fm), a podcast Matt co-hosts with his friend, Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day (http://www.smartereveryday.com/).

And Matt’s sermons from Free Church are available (for free) at https://www.landerefree.org/sermons/

In this inaugural episode, I sit down with a friend of mine, Joshua Sopko. I initially got to know Josh while we were in a Bible study together.

During one of our sessions, Josh shared that he had lost his father at a pretty young age. The ripple effects of this loss impacted the course of Josh’s life for years, including a failed marriage and his faith in God. The details of his story had an impact on me the first time I heard it and I always knew that if he was willing to share, it was a story other men should hear as well.

Josh frequently writes about the sort of topics we covered today, as well as many more, and his work can be found at https://medium.com/@joshuasopko.

He’s also heavily invested in his wife’s business, Juniper Bath & Body. Be sure to take care of all your bath and body needs at https://www.juniperbath.com/.

My wife and I have been married for more than 23 years but were married as the result of becoming pregnant at the ages of 19. We never considered alternatives such as abortion or adoption, and I had a strong conviction to live up to my responsibility as a father (even though I had no idea what that meant at the time). With love and support from our parents and family, we persevered.

We’ve since had two more amazing kids, and I’ve lived up to my promise of being a dad—a really good dad. But despite beating the odds of divorce and having raised three great kids, looking back, I know I left a lot on the table in terms of being a good leader in the home.

For years, I was complacent with a mundane routine not atypical of most fathers, but I lacked real vision. I’m talking about a vision for my emotional health and well-being, for my physical fitness, finances, etc. I lacked a clear vision for how and where I was leading not only myself but my family.

This lack of leadership by dads is a massive problem in our society right now. Too many men are distracted, focused on the wrong things, or have priorities not conducive to healthy family life.

For decades, men have been taught that they should hide their feelings—that being vulnerable is somehow a sign of weakness. As a result, there’s a lot of men that are unable to feel love, or unable to express their love to their family. This is a real problem and as fathers, we need to take steps to change the status quo before the next generation is damaged beyond repair.

I see endless potential in my kids—as many parents see in their children—but the odds of them reaching this potential and fulfilling the purpose that God has planned for their lives rests on our shoulders. It starts with us and our ability to lead them away from what the world has to teach them and towards something greater.

To be the best dad we can be—to gain that clear vision for how we should lead ourselves and our families—occurs when we truly understand the higher calling that’s been placed on fatherhood by our own Heavenly Father.

Real power exists at the intersection of our love for our kids and Biblical principles that have the power to transform the lives of our families. This is why The Inspired Legacy exists and why I’m excited to finally launch this podcast. Through my conversations with pastors, authors, doctors, experts in all aspects of life including fitness, finance, business, and more, I hope to celebrate the gift that we call fatherhood, equip men to boldly lead their loved ones down a path of greater purpose, and illustrate the love of Christ—the same love our families deserve from us, ultimately living a meaningful life as a father, leaving a lasting legacy with zero regrets.

I’m excited for what’s ahead, and I hope you’ll join me in the next episode of The Inspired Legacy Podcast.
