Educator Happy Hour features candid interviews with educators and school leaders to inspire you to level up in and out of the classroom.
In each episode, fellow educators Chase Mielke and Ming Shelby get real about the pain points affecting educators — then dig deep to uncover tools, tactics, and mindsets so we can be our best to give our best to those who need us.
This episode we talk about the research on joy: How does it improve learning? How does it influence psychological safety? Most of all, what are simple strategies any educator can use to add more joy (without compromising instruction). We'll also explore what "AF" means in the Shelby household, Chase's go-to karaoke song, and what's happening to recess time in America. Our SponsorThanks as always to our sponsor, TYS Speakers. This week, we tackle the idea of "emotion prejudice" -- how we are biased to allow, experience, and support kids through some emotions but not others. What emotion do we struggle to feel? What emotions do we allow your kids to feel? Is that kid showing "defiance" or just "unregulated anger"? And, what are the best prime deals? Explore these topics and many more with us. About Tammy Glupker
Tammy is a 25-year veteran of non-traditional education experiences and offers a unique perspective. She recently retired from being the principal of Renaissance High School in Plainwell, MI. There she also ecame the director of adult and community education. Tammy led Renaissance from a staff of 4 and student body of about 50 to a staff of 13 and a student body of about 200 in its heyday.
Under her leadership, Renaissance was named School of the Year, awarded Best Program Component for their work in becoming Trauma Informed and she was named Educator of the Year. In the COVID craziness of the 20/21 school year, Tammy was assigned the leadership of her district's virtual learning elementary which consisted of 6 educators for more than 600 students. Tammy left the office in the 22/23 school year to try yet another non-traditional role within public education when she went on the road in what she describes as a self-created assignment to recover and keep students engaged who had lagging school connections due to the pandemic.
She hit the big reset button in June of 2023 when she retired. Tammy currently serves on the board of the Michigan Alternative Education Organization and helps to prepare and support prospective educators while she looks for ways to become a pioneer of education reform.

For a good, nerdy research read, check out this 2022 article: Assessment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Here's the abstract:
In this paper, we argue that a particular set of issues mars traditional assessment practices. They may be difficult for educators to design and implement; only provide discrete snapshots of performance rather than nuanced views of learning; be unadapted to the particular knowledge, skills, and backgrounds of participants; be tailored to the culture of schooling rather than the cultures schooling is designed to prepare students to enter; and assess skills that humans routinely use computers to perform. We review extant artificial intelligence approaches that–at least partially–address these issues and critically discuss whether these approaches present additional challenges for assessment practice.
