When the pressures of today's world weigh heavily on the family unit, it takes wisdom and courage to steer through the storm. I had the privilege of conversing with Cheryl Lutz, a speaker and biblical counselor, and together, we unpacked the pivotal role of parents in fortifying their children against the tides of societal influence. Whether your family is navigating the waters of homeschooling, public, or private education, this episode offers invaluable guidance on aligning family strategies with biblical principles to combat the allure of false security that some educational environments might project.

The dance between faith and parenting is intricate and delicate, especially for families at the helm of church leadership. Cheryl and I examine the personal faith journey, underscoring the importance of cultivating one's relationship with God beyond inherited beliefs. We peel back the layers of the unique obstacles pastor's families face, from the magnified scrutiny to the siren song of people-pleasing, highlighting the need for a community that extends grace and uplifts through prayer. This episode serves as a candid reflection on the challenges and triumphs of raising a family in faith amidst a digitally driven society.

In our search for a haven within church walls, we draw inspiration from the historic unity of Roman soldiers to illustrate the strength found in Christian camaraderie. I emphasize the duty of church leaders to nurture a culture where tough conversations can be had with humility and honest dialogue. Addressing the struggles that young people confront, such as drug use and same-sex attraction, this discussion champions the church's role in offering a compassionate embrace rather than judgment, ensuring a sanctuary where every soul is guided and supported in their spiritual journey. Join us for a heartfelt exchange that empowers families to anchor their loved ones in faith and community.

Join me, Ruth Hovsepian, as I welcome David Brannock, a former pastor turned mental health advocate, for a powerful discussion about the stigma of therapy, especially within the church community. We shed light on the often difficult relationship between faith and mental health support, confronting the myths that suggest seeking therapy indicates a lack of faith or trust in God's power. With David's unique perspective, we explore the importance of embracing both spiritual guidance and professional counseling as complementary paths to healing and how leaders in the faith community can advocate for mental health awareness and support.

Listen in as David and I tackle the distinctions between therapy and counseling, addressing the church's historical challenges in dealing with personal and familial issues. We stress the necessity of offering understanding and practical tools to those grappling with mental health struggles. The conversation culminates in a heartfelt discussion on creating church environments that encourage congregants to seek the help they need and the vital role of church members in fostering a supportive atmosphere. Don't miss this enlightening exchange that aims to bridge the gap between mental health care and spiritual support, reaffirming that reaching out for help is not just courageous but a testament to one's strength and faith.

Charlene opens up about the facade of perfection that can shroud abusive relationships, especially within Christian families, and underscores the urgent need for awareness and recognition of these destructive behaviors.

This episode takes a sobering look at the statistics that reflect the widespread issue of gender-based violence and the patterns of abuse that can span generations. We grapple with the complexities of breaking this cycle and the challenging choices that must be made to halt its perpetuation. Charlene thoughtfully discusses how faith and family values can sometimes be twisted to justify abuse, and she shares powerful testimonies of resilience and transformation. Our discussion serves as a reminder that abuse is not exclusive to any one gender or community and that the empowerment of victims is essential for change.

In our support-focused segment, we discuss the vital role churches can play in providing refuge and guidance for those facing domestic abuse. Charlene and I talk about the practical steps congregations can take to become sanctuaries of healing, from implementing emergency plans to educating leaders on the nuances of spiritual abuse. As we wrap up, I extend a heartfelt thanks to Charlene for her invaluable contributions and remind listeners to seek out her book, "Overcoming the Narcissist, Sociopath, Psychopath, and Other Domestic Abusers," for further enlightenment on this critical subject. Join me as I welcome the insightful David Price, a minister, and certified professional life coach, to discuss the essential question: Is there a right way to read the Bible? Our conversation covers the cultural hesitations surrounding the idea of a 'correct' method to engage with scripture, stressing the necessity of foundational rules to truly grasp its teachings. We confront the laissez-faire attitude that any reading approach is valid and consider the Bible's explicit nature, advocating for an understanding of the consistent message God imparts to all rather than cherry-picking truths that conveniently fit personal narratives.

Listen in as we explore the crucial role of context in interpreting the Bible and the dangers of reading verses in isolation. This episode sheds light on the common missteps readers may encounter and offers practical advice on approaching biblical study with the reverence it deserves. We delve into the importance of recognizing the Bible as the infallible Word of God and the principles of consistency, competency, and comprehensiveness in study habits. By committing to these principles, we can develop a deeper appreciation for scripture and a more robust understanding of its messages.

Lastly, we discuss the dynamic nature of faith and the responsibility of believers to discern truth and verify teachings against the Word of God. David and I touch on the challenges church leaders face when confronted with questions, highlighting the importance of patience and love in the journey toward truth. The episode wraps up with a call to embrace personal growth through openness to new perspectives and an acknowledgment of the evolution of our understanding.

I invite you to check out David's ministry.

Join me, Ruth Hovsepian, for a compelling conversation with Shara Neubert, a teaching pastor and discipleship director with an incredible background in women's ministry and leadership. Listen in as Shara shares her insightful strategies for overcoming the hurdles of engaging with the Bible, particularly when it's perceived as challenging or uninteresting. We tackle the importance of understanding one's purpose for reading scripture and how a sense of curiosity can be a powerful tool in creating a meaningful study practice. Shara also highlights the profound impact of leaving a spiritual legacy, a topic that resonates deeply as we discuss its influence not only within our families but across our broader communities.

In this session, I underscore the necessity of reading the Bible in its entirety, akin to how one would savor a novel, to truly grasp the narrative woven throughout its passages. As we explore texts like the Sermon on the Mount and the books of Genesis and Revelation, we discuss the value of patience and allowing for initial confusion, which later readings can clarify, connecting the Old and New Testaments in unexpected ways. I also stress the importance of being receptive to the Holy Spirit and the insights of fellow believers while trusting our own ability to learn from the scriptures. This chapter of our discussion is a reminder to approach the Bible with enthusiasm and commitment, fostering a habit of consistent engagement with the Word of God.

The final chapter of our exchange delves into the distinction between reading and studying the Bible, where I share my personal endeavor to read through different versions of the Bible within a month. We delve into the effective strategies for in-depth Bible study, including the importance of choosing the right materials and formats that resonate with one's learning style, the significance of creating a study schedule, and the lasting influence that visible study habits can have on those around us. Shara's coaching and workshops offer a beacon of inspiration for listeners aiming to integrate these practices into their daily lives, with the goal of making 2024 a year marked by spiritual growth and connection. Tune in for an inspiring session that will reignite your passion for religious exploration and the joy of sharing that journey with others.

Check out Shara's website, https://www.sharaneubert.com/, to find a Bible Engagement Assessment to take in order to see where you fall in your own satisfaction. It helps you to understand where you are at in 8 elements of Bible engagement: Reading, Bible Navigation, Prayer, Church Participation, Understanding, Use of Study Help, Joy in Reading, and Bible Study. Whew! There are lots of areas, but all are very useful in having a balanced Bible life.

How much do you know about the hidden dangers of the adult entertainment industry? You may think you have an understanding, but today's courageous guest, Jeanne Robertson, is here to pull back the veil. Jeanne was tragically caught in the undertow of grooming and trafficking at the tender age of 17, and she shares her harrowing journey into and out of the industry that promised glamour but delivered addiction and despair.

But there's more than just Jeanne's shocking story. This episode also sheds light on how the industry actively grooms young people, using the internet to expose them to inappropriate content and manipulate them into losing control over their own lives. My own tale will help you understand this from another perspective—how the industry takes advantage of you, leaving you in a state of terror and degradation. This is a conversation for parents, educators, and anyone who cares about the safety of our children.

However, this episode isn't just about exposing the darkness—it's about finding light in the most unexpected places. Through faith and sobriety, Jeanne found her path to redemption, and I found my way through the aftermath of a devastating hurricane. We explore the vital role the church, family, and community can play in protecting our children and discuss how sharing our stories can make a difference. By the end, you'll know how you can be part of the solution and how Christian films offer a wholesome alternative to the harmful content on the internet.

Our guest today is Patti Townley-Covert. Her message and greatest desire are to see women, especially young adult women, come out of the darkness of cultural lies about self-image, sexuality, and justice issues and find the freedom of biblical truth through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Today, narcissism and self-esteem form the core of a person’s identity. Cheap sex destroys intimacy and faithfulness. Man defines “Justice” in ways that lead to increasing injustice. A biblical worldview can right these wrongs and replace individual brokenness with wholeness.

Patti Townly-Covert is an award-winning freelance writer and editor, the author of The Windblown Girl: A Memoir about Self, Sexuality, and Social Issues. Concern for young adults trying to escape life’s pain infused this page-turner with a message relevant for today.

Patti’s written numerous magazine articles for national and international publications such as Life Beautiful, HyVee, Thriving Family, and Facts and Trends. As a founding member of the anti-human trafficking organization, Every ONE Free, Patti co-wrote Do ONE Thing: Enlisting in the Battle Against Human Trafficking. Most of her research and writing focus on justice issues. Her bi-weekly blog focuses on self, sexuality, and social issues.

Key Takeaways from this episode:

Confidence in being made in God’s image gives people a valuable & stable identity that keeps them standing when life’s fierce winds blow.

Cultural lies about sex increase chaos and brokenness, whereas God’s boundaries lead to self-worth, genuine intimacy, and trustworthy relationships.

As defined by culture, social justice leads to increasing injustice, whereas dying to self and living according to a biblical worldview promotes true justice and equality.

Pam Fields is a homeschooling mom of nine children and a grandma to four. She started Tending Fields Ministries as a place for moms to share their testimonies, mentor one another, and build each other up as they seek to raise children for the glory of God. She uses her podcast, The Mom Next Door, to speak with other moms like you and discover their stories of faith.

In this episode of Out of the Darkness, I am joined by Pamela Fields, a mother of nine and homeschooler. We discuss how mothers can be supported during their seasons of motherhood, particularly when their children are young, including the importance of mothers' groups, books, and friendships for support. We look at the importance of being able to speak life into other mothers and the need to cultivate meaningful connections to encourage each other. We explore the importance of motherhood, the struggles of guilt that moms often experience, and how God can use our decisions and experiences, even if they may not have been the best decisions. We also discuss the power of prayer, even when our children are grown and living in other states.

You won't want to miss this conversation! Pull up a chair and join us.

Key Takeaways from this episode:

Prepare spiritual “snacks” when on the run

Speaking life into young moms

Use social media to connect with other moms

Moms were put on this earth to raise their children for the Lord

The Lord is constant and steady

Pass the torch of motherhood to the next generation

Tamika Thomas is a Certified Life & Relationship Coach, Author, Speaker, and the Tuesday with Tamika podcast host. Tamika is a follower of Jesus Christ and believes she has been called to help women HEAL, ELEVATE, and become RESTORED (H.E.R.). Tamika strives to live authentically and with an open heart, showing love to everybody who crosses her path.

Tamika is married and has a blended family that includes eight children. Tamika is the oldest of 11 children and the child of a drug-addicted teen mother. As a young child, she was sexually and physically abused, eventually turning to unhealthy relationships hoping to feel the love she didn't receive as a child.

After two unsuccessful marriages and a multitude of stress, Tamika suffered a STROKE. Fortunately, she made the leap of faith to no longer use her life's hurts and tragedies as crutches to cripple her but instead use her misfortunes as stairs - stairs to get her to the next level. It is at this new level that she truly begins to bloom.

Today she lives her life to empower. She believes God has called her to bridge troubled water, helping connect others to their power source. She is dedicated and determined to show others how they can turn their trials into treasures.

Three keys to success (things that prevent us from healing):

  1. Performing the role expected of us and not who we are.
  2. Trying to be perfect, fitting into someone else’s perfect.
  3. Pretending that the hurt is not there.

Key Takeaways from this episode:

  • How you THINK determines who you are and what you will produce. Your mind is the soil by which everything grows; if you think well, you will be well.
  • Take inventory of your TRIBE. You can only become as powerful as the people you surround yourself with.
  • Explore the power of Taking Action. God honors movement

Addictions are difficult to overcome. Especially when you break them alone.

Today, I share with you who I am and why I find it so important to help Christians navigate a world that can often feel anti-God, anti-bible and anti-faith.

It is because of God’s redeeming grace and the prayers of my family that I stand before you today. I focused my energy on studying the bible and praying during my recovery, and each day has brought me closer to God and my journey to healing.

I’ve walked the path of divorce and single parenting which led me down a path of alcohol and sexual addiction. It is now my goal and desire to inspire and motivate others on their journey to recovery and survival.

My prayer journey started tentatively, and your path may look different than mine, but that is the beauty of this journey; we are headed to the same destination. If you are ready - press play and join me on this God-filled journey.
