Four Things to Help When You're Homeschooling and Sick: Episode 55
Welcome back! So, I'm reshaping things a bit this time around because, honestly, I recorded this episode when I was sick and forgot to save it. Not realizing this, I didn’t keep my notes! So, as I re-recorded it I ended up heeding my own advice as a gentle reminder to cut myself some slack, especially when it comes to unexpected curveballs like getting sick. Today's episode is all about those moments when you're not at your best, and you're juggling the whole family and homeschooling gig. If you live in a state with homeschooling regulations, this adds even more pressure to get things done and not miss a day. The big question looms: Do you have to homeschool when you're sick? Well, the short answer is no. It's totally okay to give yourself a break. My mentor always says, "slow down to speed up," and that's the vibe here. But if you're worried about feeling guilty or just want some ideas for those not-so-great days, this episode's got your back. So, let's chat about preparing a secret educational kit, a set of “sub plans,” if you will – something your kids don't even know about. Why? Because th element of surprise is a game-changer. I'm diving into four cool things to consider using as impromptu lessons when you're not up for algebra or intense teaching. Sneak peek: some twists on using screen time to your advantage, as well as both indoor and out-door activities and adventures. Episode 52: Writing With a Purpose | One Way to Get Kids Writing - Effortlessly
Today, we're diving into the topic of writing. We've all been there, faced with essays and book reports that felt more like proof that we did the reading, rather than creativity. It’s lackluster, boring, and we suffer through the process. We all know writing is a crucial skill, a tool for clear communication and persuasion. And it's not just about tense and parts of speech; it can be about making a real-world impact with your words. So what are we supposed to do as homeschoolers, when we want to both teach our kids to be great writers, but we definitely do not want them to suffer through it, or worse, hate writing altogether?
In this episode, I make a big reveal – The Creative Homeschool's first creative writing project, "The Delicious Diner." It's not your typical writing exercise; it's an immersive experience and uses Canva, which is an online/app graphic design tool. Imagine menus, recipes, floor plans, and more – all wrapped up in a fun, gamified writing project for your kids.
Don’t panic if you have never used Canva before, or feel like it’s confusing to use. In a few weeks, I’ll be holding a webinar to guide you through using Canva, as well as to share the details of the Delicious Diner.
If this project doesn’t seem like it will appeal to your learner, that’s ok, too. I have suggestions for you to infuse purpose into your writing sessions so that writing becomes exciting for your kids and will help your homeschooler unleash their creativity and purpose.

Ever wondered what those mysterious animal tracks in the snow are? Let’s talk about exploring the snowy landscape, where a simple blanket of white turns into a canvas of animal adventures overnight.
When it’s time to head indoors, let's talk about a treat that every snow-loving friend needs to try: snow ice cream! Imagine whipping up a delicious frozen treat using fresh, clean snow. I'll guide you through the simple recipe, ensuring that your taste buds and your kids will thank you for this delightful winter dessert.
Remember those fluffy snow days perfect for sledding? I'll share a heartwarming tale of how I turned a sledding adventure into a lesson on neural pathways. It's a fascinating journey into the science of learning, all while enjoying the snowy outdoors.
Have you ever pondered why eating snow dries out our skin? Next we unravel the mystery behind this common winter phenomenon. We'll explore the chemistry behind it, making a simple act of eating snow a playful and educational experience for both you and your kids.
Lastly, let's take snow creativity to a whole new level. Instead of the usual snowman, let's talk about creating a snow maze or labyrinth. I'll guide you through the planning process, turning your snowy yard into an outdoor logic puzzle. Imagine the joy on your kids' faces as they navigate through their snowy creation! Snow Ice Cream
Ingredients:
- Fresh, clean snow (about 8 cups)
- 1 cup of milk (you can use any kind: regular, almond, soy, etc.)
- ½ cup of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Collect the Snow: First, make sure you find fresh, clean snow. Avoid yellow, pink, or dirty snow. It's best to collect snow right after it has fallen.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the milk, sugar, and vanilla extract together. Stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
- Add the Snow: Gradually add the snow to your milk mixture, stirring continuously. You might not need all 8 cups of snow – just keep adding and stirring until you get the consistency of ice cream.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste your snow ice cream. If you want it sweeter, you can add a little more sugar.
- Serve Immediately: Snow ice cream is best enjoyed right away, as it will start to melt quickly.
- Optional Add-ins: Feel free to add toppings or mix-ins, like chocolate chips, sprinkles, or fruit.

Episode 42: Three Tips for Art Time
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Creative Homeschool Podcast! Have you ever embarked on an art project with your kids, envisioning this amazing creation for your walls? You know, the one you saw online that seemed so cute and perfect?
We've all been there, silently hoping for a magical, fun-filled art time with a hint of background music. But let's be real, things hardly ever go as planned. In this episode, I share my experience attempting to make rainbow ghosts with my kids.
Despite my initial vision of adorable, identical ghost families, each of my children took their own creative liberties. One wanted a big ghost, another went for an "executive ghost," and then it kept evolving into crafting Fire and Ice Ghosts.
It wasn't the picture-perfect scene I had in mind, but as I reflected, I realized they learned a new watercolor technique, added their own creative spins, and had a blast telling stories about their unique ghosts. Since the outcome was not what I was going for, does this mean that my art lesson was a flop? Today, I'm tackling the often intimidating subject of homeschool planning. It's that aspect of homeschooling that can trigger fear and uncertainty because we worry about covering everything necessary for our children's education, leaving something out and not having the time for all the things we should cover.
Whether you're a seasoned homeschooler or just starting out, finding the right planning approach can be a challenge. I'll share five methods to make it easier no matter what route of learning your family chooses:
Unschooling: Follow your child's interests, teaching real-life skills.
Boxed Curriculum: Use a pre-packaged curriculum for clear daily guidance.
Loop Schedule: Rotate subjects like art, music, and maintain flexibility.
Themed Learning: Base your year on a central theme for a holistic approach.
Goal-Oriented Planning: Set goals, mark events, and divide your year accordingly.

Today's idea is having a Spirit Day, something like the spirit days you may have had in public school when you were growing up (but a little more fun!).
For homeschoolers, Spirit Days create a fun and engaging atmosphere to learn and explore. I'm talking about 6 themes for your Spirit Day and each theme can be customized to fit your family's interests and preferences. (It's not just about trying to run around and find the right pair of socks for a Spirit Day that doesn't matter to you!)
Remember, these resets aren't just for kids; they can be a refreshing change for you too. Whether it's dressing up, trying new foods, watching movies, or going on field trips, Spirit Days can be educational and entertaining.
