Public funding covers the basics in Montana schools, but targeted donations drive innovation. In this episode, Dorothy Drury of the Kalispell Education Foundation shares how Montana school funding really works and how the KEF's fast, teacher-driven grants are turning small dollars into real classroom impact.
She shares the growth of the foundation’s impact—from under $10,000 serving about 1,000 students to roughly $50,000 reaching more than 5,600 students. Many grants fund durable tools that benefit students for years.

Today, Fiber Reaper is a growing example of how innovation thrives in the Flathead Valley’s manufacturing ecosystem. The company has shipped to all 50 states, expanded into Canada and Mexico, and secured patents in 29 countries. Flathead Lake’s clean waters and mountain views aren’t just beautiful—they’re essential to our region’s economy, culture, and future. For over 100 years, the Flathead Lake Biological Station has worked to protect one of America’s cleanest lakes.
Associate Director Tom Bansak shares the story of the station’s start in 1899, when it operated out of a borrowed cabin, and how it grew into a leading center for freshwater research. Founded by biologist Morton Elrod, the station now maintains one of the world’s most complete lake data records.
In the 1970s, scientists there discovered signs of pollution. Tom shares how community action helped to restore water quality.
Today, the station’s work goes beyond science. It offers education programs, supports the local economy, and brings together tribal, government, and business leaders to keep the lake healthy for the future.

"Young entrepreneurs can teach us all a thing or two about business," is the lesson that shines through in my conversation with Parker and Lucy, the young founders of Two Sisters Lemonade and winners of the 2024 Youth Entrepreneurship Award for Lemonade Day Flathead.
Over three years of participation, these sisters have transformed from novices with a simple setup to savvy business owners making strategic decisions about products, branding, and customer service.
Parker summarizes the entrepreneurial mindset perfectly: "If something goes wrong or something doesn't go right, just get back up and try it again." The Conrad Mansion, built in 1895 by Kalispell founder Charles Conrad, is a well-preserved Victorian home that offers a rare, authentic view of Montana’s past. Under the leadership of Executive Director Brit Clark, the Conrad Mansion Museum shares the story of Conrad’s journey from a river freighter in Virginia to a prominent businessman in Montana, influenced by a strategic tip from James J. Hill about the Great Northern Railway’s route.
What sets the mansion apart is its exceptional preservation—90% of the home’s contents are original, and the structure remains largely unchanged since its construction. This historical integrity offers visitors a unique window into the era, making the mansion both a cultural landmark and a testament to careful stewardship. The site also functions as a year-round community space, with open grounds and engaging events that invite residents and tourists alike to connect with local history.

Matt Jensen: With two decades of dedicated service in public education, Matt has established his standing as a proven leader committed to shaping a brighter future for our students. Matt embarked on his career as a high school Social Studies Teacher and concurrently served as the MEA/MFT Union Co-President, a testament to his commitment to both administrative leadership and hands-on education. He went on to serve in roles including High School Principal, Elementary School Principal, and Superintendent of Bigfork Schools, before joining Kalispell Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent, later being named Superintendent starting with the 2024-2025 school year. Matt shares, "Being entrusted with other people's children and community resources has been the most humbling honor of my life. My roots, both personal and professional, run deep in the Flathead Valley. It's challenging to find the words to describe what it feels like to serve the children of my friends, family, colleagues, and the community that once invested in me."
Jinn Mariman: Jinnifer Mariman was born and raised in Libby, Montana and went to law school to help folks like those in her hometown who were exposed to asbestos. Jinn is doing just that as partner at McGarvey Law. Her husband Gabe co-owns Bias Brewing. Together they have two daughters in Hedges Elementary and have been committed to our community through various boards and efforts. Viewing our public education is one of our greatest public resources, Jinn became a Trustee for Kalispell Public Schools in May 2023. She is proud to serve our community in that role.

On a hot summer day, who doesn’t love a glass of lemonade, especially when it’s sold by kids at a Lemonade Stand? My guest today is Jenn Cronk, the Discover Kalispell Chamber’s Workforce & Special Initiatives Director, and we’ll be talking about Lemonade Day - a program of the Kalispell Chamber that promotes entrepreneurship to youth in Kindergarten through 8th grade, one lemonade stand at a time. This year’s lemonade day program is bigger than ever, spanning the entirety of Flathead County, and it happens on Saturday, June 24th. We’ll learn more about the program and how kids can participate to become the next generation of Flathead entrepreneurs.

Dave Roemer, Superintendent, Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park is a crown jewel of the National Park System. Its over 1 million acres, located in Northwest Montana and situated just outside of Kalispell in the Flathead Valley, provides stunning mountain, valley, and glacial views via the Going-to-the-Sun Road, plentiful hiking and recreation opportunities, historic lodges, cold crisp streams, rivers, glacial lakes, and last but not least, an impressive array of plants and wildlife including beargrass flowers, moose, bighorn sheep, and of course, grizzly bears. As the snows of winter fade in the Flathead and tourism to the valley picks up as we head toward summer, Venture Boldly takes time to talk with Diane Medler, the Executive Director of Discover Kalispell, a destination marketing and stewardship organization as part of the Discover Kalispell Chamber. Ashley King-Jones, Senior Vice President of Operations
Three Rivers Bank of Montana is a key community bank in the Flathead Valley. Founded in 1973 by Jack King along with 11 local businessmen, First Security Bank of Kalispell, now Three Rivers Bank of Montana, has established itself over nearly five decades as a community bank that is deeply invested in the local community. Clay Binford, Chief of People and Development and Co-Founder

It’s Montana’s 68th legislative session – every two years, for 90 days, the state’s legislators work intensively and tirelessly to move forward bills that will craft the newest legislation for the state. As the voice of business for our member businesses, the Discover Kalispell Chamber is actively involved in monitoring bills as they move through the House and Senate. The chamber supports, opposes, and monitors bills following the chamber’s own legislative guidelines, and during the legislative session, in addition to regularly scheduled monthly Government Affairs meetings (to which all chamber members are invited), additional bi-weekly meetings are held for members to hear directly from guest legislators. Dr. Jane Karas, President of Flathead Valley Community College
Visionary. Leader. Innovator. These are words often used when describing our podcast guest, Dr. Jane Karas, President of Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC). Dr. Karas was awarded the Kalispell Chamber’s highest honor, the Flathead Legacy Award, for her outstanding contributions to the Flathead Valley community through her work at FVCC. Dr. Karas has been President of FVCC for over 20 years, helming the college through a variety of economic climates while steadily growing the college’s programming, facilities, and campus. She has overseen expansion and addition of the campus buildings, including the Broussard Center for Nursing and Health Science, Broussard Family Library and Learning Commons, construction of the first dormitory- Founders Hall, and most recently, the construction and opening of the Wachholz College Center, a unique facility which combines an event center with a gymnasium and fitness center with a 1000+ seat performing arts center, recital hall, art gallery, and outdoor amphitheater. Her leadership has transformed the college, and more importantly, helped shape the educational opportunities for the valley’s workforce past, present, and future.
