If you are sitting in supervision every week thinking, Something about this does not feel right, this episode is for you.

New associates are expected to enter supervision and somehow know what a good supervision experience should look like. But if this is your first supervisor, how would you know whether the lack of structure, missing evaluations, or disorganized paperwork is normal?

In this episode, Ashley Stephens Durbin and I walk through the signs that supervision may be coasting. Ashley shares what "no structure to be found" can actually look like, along with an early-career evaluation experience that delivered difficult feedback without giving her a plan for growth. I also talk about why disorganized supervision becomes a bigger problem when you are facing a real clinical mistake or emergency.

Most importantly, we talk about what you can do next. You are not powerless just because someone is signing your hours.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How to tell the difference between a relaxed supervision style and supervision with no meaningful structure
  • Why evaluation, documentation, and case follow-up should be part of your supervision process
  • How to decide whether you trust your supervisor enough to call when something goes wrong clinically
  • When to have the difficult conversation, find a mentor, interview someone new, or change supervisors

Good supervision should help you grow into a clinician who can think, evaluate, document, and make sound decisions. It should not leave you wondering whether you are wasting another supervision hour talking about absolutely nothing.

I know the difficult-conversation piece personally. Changing my first supervision situation required one of the hardest professional conversations I had experienced at that point in my life, but it also taught me the power of self-advocacy.

Your supervision experience helps shape the clinician you are becoming. Pay attention when the warning flags show up.

The ACA Code of Ethics is being rewritten, and if you supervise, teach, manage clinicians, or practice counseling, these changes affect you directly.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Bret Hendricks, who served on the ACA Ethics Code task force, to walk through the biggest proposed revisions and what they mean for counselors in real-world practice. We unpack how the profession is moving beyond impairment language into wellness and self-care accountability, why administrative supervision finally has its own ethical framework, and what supervisors need to clarify in their documentation and relationships.

We also spend time talking about something I know many supervisors struggle with: role confusion. Clinical supervision, administrative supervision, evaluation, mentorship, workplace expectations, these areas overlap constantly. Dr. Hendricks explains how the revised language pushes supervisors to define boundaries more clearly and revisit those conversations throughout the supervisory relationship.

Another major conversation centers around the new expectation for a professional will. Counselors are now being asked to think proactively about records access, continuity planning, and ethical responsibility if practice operations are interrupted.

This episode is not about fear or “gotcha” ethics. It is about building stronger systems, clearer communication, and healthier supervision structures that protect both clinicians and clients.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why counselor wellness is now part of ethical responsibility
  • What a professional will is and why supervisors need one
  • How administrative supervision differs from clinical supervision
  • Why supervision role clarification matters more than ever
  • What supervisees should expect from ethical supervision systems

If you have ever felt uncertain about supervision boundaries, documentation expectations, or workplace ethics, this conversation will help you think more clearly about the systems supporting your practice.

If your caseload feels quiet in September, it's probably because of what you didn't do in July.

Every fall, the same pattern shows up. Schools start back, associates finish summer intensives, and suddenly supervisees and clients are looking for help. The clinicians who are ready for that shift are usually the ones who started building the structure before September.

In this episode, I talk about how to build your fall supervision and client roster with intention. This is not about waiting for people to find you. It is about making sure your website, referral relationships, directories, intake process, and follow-up systems are clear before the busy season arrives.

I also talk directly to the introverts, because I see you. Updating your website is important, but sometimes the real next step is making the phone call, contacting the graduate program, reaching out to a school, or offering yourself as a resource in the community.

In this episode, we cover:

• Why July is the right time to prepare for September referrals
• Where supervisees are actually looking for supervisors
• Why your supervision page should not be hidden on your website
• How graduate programs, directories, and word of mouth work together
• Why client referrals require the same kind of intentional outreach
• How to track real connections instead of just counting contacts
• What to have ready before supervisees or clients begin reaching out

If you are building a supervision practice or trying to strengthen your client caseload, do not wait until the inquiries arrive to get organized. Choose one thing to fix this week. Make the call, update the page, check your email process, or prepare your paperwork.

Your future fall self will thank you.

If you've been shopping for supervisor training, don't miss this episode.

More than simply a box-checking exercise, the training you complete becomes the foundation for how you guide associates, make ethical decisions, and protect both your license and theirs. With AI making it easier than ever to create online courses, it has also become easier for low-quality "certificate mill" programs to look legitimate.

In this episode, I'm joined by Jennifer Marie Fairchild, Director of Operations at Kate Walker Training. Together, we discuss the questions every therapist should ask before purchasing any supervisor training. We also share what we discovered after reviewing several online programs ourselves and explain why convenience should never replace educational integrity.

This conversation isn't about criticizing course providers. It's about helping you become a more informed consumer so you can confidently choose training that truly prepares you for the responsibilities of clinical supervision.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why verifying your instructor's credentials matters more than ever
  • The warning signs of a certificate mill
  • How AI is changing online education, for better and for worse
  • Why references, syllabi, and meaningful assignments still matter
  • What your licensing board may expect if your supervisor training is ever questioned
  • The difference between earning a credential and simply receiving a certificate
  • Why responsive customer support should be part of any quality training program
  • Questions associates should ask before choosing a supervisor

The goal isn't to find the cheapest course or the fastest certificate. The goal is to find an education you can confidently stand behind if your professional decisions are ever called into question.

Your intake process is doing a lot more than collecting signatures. It is shaping the expectations your clients and supervisees will carry into every interaction that follows.

In this episode, I unpack some of the most common intake mistakes I see therapists and supervisors make. The surprising part is that these mistakes rarely become obvious during the first meeting. Instead, they show up weeks or even months later when a client pushes back on a cancellation fee, a supervisee questions a policy, or someone says, "I didn't know that."

We'll talk about why intake is really about building clarity, trust, and protection from the very beginning. Whether you're onboarding a new therapy client or welcoming a supervisee, your systems matter more than you may realize.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why your intake process begins before the first appointment
  • How mismatched expectations create avoidable conflict
  • The difference between having a contract and conducting an orientation
  • Common documentation gaps that leave therapists vulnerable
  • The intake mistakes supervisors make most often
  • Why professionalism during intake becomes your best marketing tool
  • Simple changes you can make this week to strengthen your systems

You don't need to overhaul your entire practice overnight. Often, one well-designed improvement can make your intake process smoother, your documentation stronger, and your professional relationships more successful.

If you listened to the episode for new grads and thought, oh no, that sounds like my supervision setup, this episode is for you.

I want to be very clear. There is no shame here. Many supervisors step into this role because someone asked them to, because their workplace needed them, or because their state required very little training before allowing them to supervise. You only know what you know. But once you see the gaps, you can start tightening the system.

In this episode, Dr. Ashley Durbin and I talk directly to supervisors who want to improve the way they structure supervision. We walk through what needs attention first, including caseload review, regular meetings, supervision notes, state rules, accountability, and what to do when a supervisee’s job setting is bigger than your current supervision structure can support.

This is not about being perfect. It is about knowing what you are responsible for and choosing one or two things to fix this week.

In this episode, we cover:

• Why loose, supervisee-led supervision can create risk
• How to review large caseloads without pretending you can cover every client in depth
• Why supervisors need to document rule review, directives, and follow up
• What to do when one hour of supervision is not enough
• Why “I didn’t know” is not a strong defense when client care is involved
• How community, consultation, and state organizations help supervisors stay current

If you are a new supervisor, start low and slow. Leave room for crises. Leave room for rule changes. Leave room for the real work of guiding someone into ethical, competent practice.

Most supervisors worry about paperwork last. Licensing boards look at it first.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ashley Durbin to talk about the supervision paperwork that actually matters. We move beyond forms and checklists and look at the complete documentation system every supervisor needs. From contracts and evaluations to supervision notes, hour tracking, malpractice insurance, and employment records, we break down what belongs in your supervision file and why it matters.

We also discuss one of the biggest mistakes supervisors make. They wait until the end of the supervision process to organize documentation. By then, records are missing, hours are difficult to verify, and everyone is stressed.

Ashley shares how she uses her EHR to simplify supervision paperwork, automate evaluations, store contracts, and keep records organized. We also talk about external supervision agreements, supervision notes, state-specific requirements, and how documentation protects both supervisors and supervisees when questions arise.

This conversation is about creating better systems. When your documentation is organized, supervision becomes easier, more defensible, and far less stressful.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why supervision paperwork is much more than a contract and a few forms
  • How supervision notes and documentation protect both supervisors and supervisees
  • The easiest ways to track hours, evaluations, and compliance requirements
  • What records supervisors commonly forget until it is too late

If paperwork has been the thing keeping you from becoming a supervisor, this episode is for you. Documentation does not have to be complicated. It just needs to be intentional.

If there is a difficult conversation you've been avoiding, this episode is for you.

I know most clinicians do not avoid hard conversations because they don't care. We avoid them because we are not sure how to define the problem, connect it to a standard, and communicate it in a way that actually leads to change.

In this episode, I walk you through the five-step framework I use when addressing supervisee performance concerns, professional behavior issues, and situations where expectations have become unclear. We talk about why so many supervisors get stuck in self-doubt, how imposter syndrome shows up during leadership moments, and why avoiding a conversation often creates more damage than having it.

I also share examples from my own supervision experience, including mistakes I made early in my career and how those experiences helped me develop a clearer process for addressing concerns while protecting the supervisory relationship.

This framework applies whether you supervise today, plan to supervise in the future, or simply want to strengthen your clinical leadership skills.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • How to define supervision concerns using observable behaviors instead of labels
  • Why every difficult conversation should connect back to a standard, contract, or ethical guideline
  • How documentation and follow-up create accountability and growth
  • What imposter syndrome sounds like when supervisors avoid necessary conversations

Leadership is not about avoiding discomfort. It is about addressing concerns clearly, ethically, and consistently. When you have a process, difficult conversations become less intimidating and far more effective.

Most supervisors are comfortable giving feedback. Far fewer have a system for evaluating supervisees.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ashley Stephens Durbin to unpack the difference between feedback and formal evaluation, and why that distinction matters more than most supervisors realize.

We discuss what happens when concerns are discussed but never documented, why evaluation protects both supervisors and supervisees, and how to build an evaluation process that supports growth without turning supervision into a performance review.

We also explore one of the biggest misconceptions in supervision. Many supervisors assume evaluations create tension. In reality, clear expectations and documented feedback often strengthen the supervisory relationship because everyone knows where they stand.

Whether you're supervising associates, graduate students, or social workers, this episode will help you create a process that is ethical, practical, and sustainable.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why feedback and formal evaluation are not the same thing
  • How documentation protects supervisors, supervisees, and clients
  • What to include in a practical supervisee evaluation process
  • How evaluations create growth plans instead of surprises

If you've been avoiding evaluations because they feel uncomfortable, this conversation will help you rethink their purpose. Evaluation is not about punishment. It is about creating clarity, accountability, and measurable growth.

If you work with clients, chances are you are already working with someone who is bisexual or pansexual, whether they have disclosed it to you or not. In this episode, Joyce Miles Jacquote joins me to unpack what bisexual and pansexual clients are actually navigating behind the scenes and what therapists need to understand to provide affirming, ethical care.

We talk about minority stress, identity concealment, community belonging, and why bisexual and pansexual individuals often experience marginalization both outside and inside queer spaces. Joyce also walks through the mental health impacts clinicians are most likely to encounter, including depression, anxiety, internalized stigma, and relationship stress.

One part of this conversation that really stood out to me was the discussion around invisibility. Clients in straight-presenting or same-gender relationships are often told, directly or indirectly, that their bisexuality no longer “counts.” That erasure has real emotional consequences and therapists need to know how to recognize it.

We also spend time discussing faith, identity conflict, and what authentic living can look like for clients navigating conservative religious systems. This conversation is practical, compassionate, and deeply relevant for therapists working in any setting.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why bisexual and pansexual clients often delay disclosure in therapy
  • How minority stress affects mental health outcomes
  • What identity concealment can look like clinically
  • Why community belonging matters for bisexual and pansexual clients
  • How therapists can create more affirming clinical environments

A hybrid practice can feel flexible and efficient, until the lack of structure starts creating problems.

When therapists move between telehealth and in-person sessions without a clear system, small decisions quickly turn into ethical, logistical, and clinical challenges. Questions about HIPAA, crisis management, informed consent, and scheduling all become harder when there is no defined default.

In this episode, I walk through what therapists need to consider before offering a hybrid counseling model. We look at how to decide between virtual and in-person care, where clinicians often underestimate risk, and why your policies matter more than your preferences.

This episode is less about technology and more about decision-making.

In this episode, we cover:

• How to create a clear default for telehealth versus in-person sessions
• Why informed consent and crisis planning matter in hybrid practice
• What therapists misunderstand about HIPAA, AI, and physical privacy
• How cognitive load and scheduling affect sustainability in practice

If your hybrid model currently depends on convenience or case-by-case decisions, this episode will help you build a structure that is easier to manage and easier to defend ethically.

Taxes are not just an April problem. They are shaped by the systems and decisions you build throughout the year.

In this episode, I sit down with CPA Alan Pruitt from The Therapist CPA to talk about what therapists often miss when it comes to taxes, bookkeeping, and profitability in private practice. Alan works exclusively with therapists, and he breaks down the financial concepts clinicians actually need in plain language.

We explore why so many therapists feel stressed even when they are fully booked, how messy bookkeeping leads to missed deductions, and why understanding your numbers is critical for long-term sustainability.

This conversation is not about becoming a tax expert. It is about building enough clarity and structure to support the kind of practice you actually want to maintain.

In this episode, we cover:

• The three financial numbers every therapist should track
• Why therapists often overpay in taxes without realizing it
• How S Corps and retirement planning can reduce tax burden
• The connection between financial sustainability and burnout prevention

If you are building a private practice, tax planning is not separate from clinical sustainability. Clear systems reduce stress, improve decision-making, and help you keep more of what you earn.

If you have ever thought about adding a side hustle to your therapy practice, this episode is for you.

Not every extra income stream creates freedom. Some create stability and long-term growth. Others quietly drain your time, energy, and confidence. The difference usually has less to do with the opportunity itself and more to do with whether the business model actually fits you.

In this episode, I walk through five of the most common side hustles therapists ask me about, including supervision, group practice, courses and trainings, certifications, and coaching. We look at the real pros and cons of each, along with the ethical and operational realities that often get overlooked.

This discussion is not about chasing more money. It is about building something sustainable that supports the kind of professional life you actually want.

In this episode, we cover:

• Why supervision can create recurring, stable income when structured well
• The hidden leadership and bookkeeping demands behind group practice ownership
• What therapists misunderstand about creating courses and trainings
• Why coaching requires separate systems, marketing, and ethical boundaries

If you are considering adding another income stream, do not start with potential profit. Start with fit. The best side hustle is the one that aligns with your strengths, your tolerance for leadership, and the way you actually want to spend your time.

When your business model fits your personality and values, growth feels sustainable instead of exhausting.

Clinical supervisor readiness is often framed as a confidence issue, but that is not what we see in practice. Most clinicians who consider supervision already have the experience. What they lack is a clear, repeatable structure for how supervision actually works. In this episode, Dr. Ashley Stephens Durbin and I explore the gap between being ready and being prepared, and why waiting for certainty often keeps clinicians stuck longer than necessary.

We also break down the difference between counseling and supervision. Supervision is not simply an extension of clinical work. It is an evaluative role that requires documentation, accountability, and ethical clarity. Without systems in place, supervisors can quickly feel overwhelmed or inconsistent. This conversation highlights how structure, not personality, is what creates effective and sustainable supervision.

A major focus in this episode is the role of systems. From contracts to evaluation to remediation, these are not optional components. They are what protect your license, support your supervisee, and create a process for real growth. We also address the importance of humility in supervision, knowing your limits, and connecting supervisees to the right resources instead of trying to be everything for everyone.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why readiness to supervise is different from feeling confident
  • What systems you need before taking your first supervisee
  • How evaluation and remediation actually support growth
  • Why supervision requires structure, not just experience

If you have been questioning whether you are ready, shift the question. It is not about readiness alone. It is about whether you have the systems to support it.

Private practice is not just about seeing clients. Without consistent referrals and a clear niche, it becomes unpredictable and difficult to sustain.

In this episode, I introduce two clinicians from our 2025 Practice Grant, Svetlana Kutikova and Isaiah Rodriguez. Svetlana is building her caseload in a group practice. Isaiah is expanding into supervision as a way to grow his business. Both are navigating what it actually looks like to build something real after licensure.

We talk about the early-stage challenges that do not get normalized enough. Inconsistent schedules. Low caseloads. The pressure to “get more clients” without a clear plan. Svetlana shares what it feels like to have ten clients one week and far fewer the next. These are not signs that something is wrong. They are part of the process.

You will hear how clinicians move from uncertainty to clarity by identifying who they serve, how they serve them, and how to communicate that effectively. We also discuss what makes a therapist referable, why ease of access matters for clients, and how small systems create long-term stability.

Isaiah brings a different perspective. He is looking beyond sessions and stepping into supervision. We talk about what it means to think like a business owner, not just a provider, and how supervision becomes a structured path for growth when it is built intentionally.

This conversation is about building. When private practice is treated passively, it creates inconsistency. When it is built intentionally, it becomes sustainable.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why inconsistent caseloads are normal in early private practice
  • How to clarify your niche so referrals actually come in
  • What makes it easier for clients to contact and book with you
  • Why referral relationships matter more than passive marketing
  • How supervision can become a structured path for growth, as Isaiah demonstrates

If you have been thinking, “I just need more clients,” pause here. This is not just a referral problem. It is a structure problem. Sustainable private practice comes from clear messaging, consistent systems, and intentional growth.

Supervision is not just an extra income stream. Without structure, it becomes an ethical and professional risk.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ashley Stephens Durbin to walk through what it actually looks like to build supervision as an ethical form of income. We unpack the fears clinicians have about liability, confidence, and business setup, and we clarify what supervision requires beyond strong clinical skills.

We talk about the difference between seeing supervision as a “side hustle” and understanding it as a structured professional role. You will hear how supervisors move from uncertainty and hesitation to building systems that support both their supervisees and their own license.

We also spend time on something that comes up in every training. Ethics and accountability. There is a lot of confusion about liability, business models, and what supervisors are actually responsible for. We walk through how to stay compliant, how to set boundaries, and how to avoid the common mistakes that get supervisors in trouble.

This conversation is about structure. When supervision is treated casually, it creates risk. When it is built intentionally, it becomes a meaningful, sustainable extension of your practice.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why supervision is not a quick or easy side income
  • What systems you need before taking your first supervisee
  • How liability actually works and how to manage it
  • Why starting small leads to stronger, more ethical supervision

If you have been thinking about becoming a supervisor but feel unsure where to start, pause here. This is not a confidence problem. It is a structure problem. Ethical supervision comes from clear systems, defined roles, and consistent processes.

Supervision is not just a continuation of clinical work. Without a shift in mindset, it becomes overwhelming and risky.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ashley Stephens Durbin to talk about what it really means to step into clinical leadership in supervision. We unpack the identity shift that happens when clinicians move into supervisory roles, and why so many feel unprepared for the responsibility that comes with it.

We talk about the weight supervisors feel. Liability, authority, and decision-making that impacts not just one client, but many. This is where clinicians often get stuck. They were trained to reduce power in the therapy room, but supervision requires them to use it appropriately.

We also address one of the most common issues we see. Overcontrol. Supervisors who micromanage often believe they are being thorough, but in reality, they are limiting growth. We walk through how to recognize when supervision is creating dependence instead of independence, and what to do differently.

Another major focus is rule literacy. Supervisors must understand their board rules, legislative changes, and professional standards. Relying on secondhand information creates risk. Ethical leadership requires going directly to the source and staying informed.

This conversation is about responsibility. When supervision is treated casually, it creates confusion and liability. When it is approached as leadership, it becomes structured, ethical, and sustainable.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why supervision requires an identity shift, not just added skills
  • How to recognize and reduce overcontrol in supervision
  • What it means to build independent, not dependent, clinicians
  • Why knowing your rules is a core leadership responsibility

This is not about confidence, it is about structure and mindset. If you have been thinking about becoming a supervisor or questioning how you are currently supervising, this is your checkpoint.

Avoiding hard conversations in supervision does not preserve the relationship. It weakens it.

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ashley Stephens Durbin to talk about what really gets in the way of addressing issues with supervisees. We walk through the fear, the hesitation, and the common patterns supervisors fall into when something feels off but they are not sure how to say it.

We talk about the difference between a hard conversation and a harmful one. Avoiding the conversation altogether creates risk. Waiting until frustration builds leads to reactions that feel like punishment instead of guidance. Ethical supervision requires something different. It requires structure.

We also break down the systems that make these conversations easier. Orientation, evaluation, and remediation are not just paperwork. They are the framework that allows supervisors to give clear, consistent feedback without relying on emotion or guesswork.

This conversation also addresses something many supervisors do not think about until it is too late. Documentation and consistency protect your license. When expectations are unclear or only enforced after problems escalate, supervisors can find themselves exposed to complaints or ethical concerns.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why avoiding tough conversations creates more risk, not less
  • The difference between supportive supervision and permissiveness
  • How to use structure to guide difficult conversations
  • What to do if you have already delayed addressing a concern

If you are feeling hesitant about addressing an issue with a supervisee, pause here. This is not about confidence. It is about clarity and structure. When you have a system in place, the conversation becomes part of the process instead of something you avoid.

More clients will not fix a broken business model. It will just exhaust it faster.

In this episode, I sit down with business strategist Jenny Melrose to walk through what actually creates sustainable income in a therapy practice. We unpack why so many clinicians hit a ceiling, even with a full caseload, and how to shift from volume-based growth to a structure that supports your life.

We introduce the CAFE framework, capacity, alignment, focus, and execution, and apply it directly to real therapy practice scenarios. You will hear how therapists move from constant overload to steady, predictable income without adding more sessions.

We also spend time on something I know matters to you. Ethics. There is a lot of misinformation about what therapists can and cannot offer. We clarify how to stay within your scope while still creating resources, products, and services that support your clients and expand your reach.

This conversation is about design. When your income depends entirely on client hours, you will eventually hit a limit. When your structure is intentional, your practice becomes more flexible, more ethical, and more sustainable.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why a full caseload does not equal sustainable income
  • How capacity limits quietly shape your revenue ceiling
  • What ethical alignment looks like when offering resources beyond sessions
  • How focusing on one offer creates momentum and measurable growth

If you have been telling yourself that the answer is more clients, pause here. That is a volume solution to a design problem. Sustainable income comes from building a model that fits your capacity, aligns with your ethics, and runs on clear, repeatable systems.

If you have ever finished a long week, looked at your calendar, and thought, “I should have made more than this,” this episode is for you.

Making more money in private practice is not always about raising your fee. Often it is about protecting the time you are already selling. When sessions run long, cancellations slide, and consultations spill over, your effective hourly rate quietly drops. And you feel it by the end of the month.

In this episode, I walk through how to calculate what you are actually earning and where the leaks usually show up. We look at the small boundary decisions that feel generous in the moment but expensive over time. This is less about hustle and more about structure.

In this episode, we cover:

• What “effective hourly rate” really means for therapists and supervisors
• How unpaid admin time and session overages dilute your income
• Why enforcing your late cancel and no show policy is an ethical business decision
• Simple boundary scripts that protect your time without damaging the relationship

If you are tempted to add more clients, extend your hours, or create a new service just to increase revenue, pause. You may not need more. You may need tighter systems.

When your calendar is clean and your policies are consistent, your income reflects your effort. And your practice starts to feel sustainable instead of draining.

Spring cleaning is not just for closets. It is for your paperwork.

In this episode, I walk you through a Spring 2026 paperwork shape up and show you exactly what to fix, what to update, and what to stop ignoring. This is not about panic. It is about systems. When your documentation is clean and current, compliance becomes steady instead of stressful.

We start with the core clinical paperwork every counselor should review. Informed consent. Practice policies. Release of information. HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices. Then we move into the newer pressure points, including House Bill 4224 website posting requirements and the No Surprises Act Good Faith Estimate.

I also address the pieces that are not always spelled out clearly in the rules but still matter, like social media policies, AI consent, and supervision disclosures. Technology moves fast. Legislation moves differently. Your paperwork has to account for both.

This conversation is about transparency. Clients deserve to understand what they are agreeing to. And you deserve documentation that protects your license and reflects the way you actually practice.

In this episode, we cover:

  • What must be included in your informed consent and client file under Texas rules
  • How to comply with House Bill 4224 website and facility posting requirements
  • How to implement the No Surprises Act Good Faith Estimate clearly and correctly
  • Why technology, AI use, and Releases of Information require explicit, structured consent

If you have been telling yourself you will update your paperwork “when things slow down,” hear this clearly: things rarely slow down on their own. Compliance is not about fear. It is about alignment. When your forms match your practice and your practice matches the rules, you reduce risk and increase clarity.

Most therapists do not burn out because they are bad at boundaries. They burn out because they are trying to fix structural problems with personal effort. In this episode, I break down the difference between leaks you can patch and systems that need to be rebuilt.

We talk about what capacity ceilings in private practice really are, how inconsistent policies quietly drain income and energy, and why trying to “work harder” is often a sign you are forcing something that needs redesign. This conversation is about learning to tell the difference between what you can fix this month and what requires a bigger shift.

In this episode, we cover:

  • The difference between fixable leaks, like unclear fees and no show policies, and structural capacity ceilings
  • How income tied only to client hours creates burnout, even when your practice is full
  • Why too many roles and too many contact channels lead to boundary fatigue
  • How to recognize when you have outgrown your current model and need a financial bridge, not more effort

If you are fully booked but still exhausted, hear this clearly: it may not be a motivation issue. It may be a design issue. Capacity ceilings in private practice are feedback. When you learn to read the signal, you can rebuild in a way that protects both your mission and your income.

January and September can feel like a wave. The calls increase. The emails stack up. And for a moment, it feels like momentum.

But calls are not the goal. Kept first sessions are the goal.

In this episode, I walk you through how to turn inquiries into actual booked clients without pressure tactics, without sales scripts that feel inauthentic, and without overcompromising your boundaries. Most therapists were never trained in sales. What we were trained in is structure, clarity, and expectation setting. And that is exactly what increases your show rate.

We talk about the four KPIs that actually matter in private practice and why the fourth one, first appointments kept, is where your income stabilizes. I show you how a simple consultation script reframes therapy as a three session process instead of a one session miracle. That shift alone reduces no shows and mismatched expectations.

We also unpack friction in your intake system. Slow responses, too many contact methods, unclear policies, and bending your calendar to “just get them in” all create drop off. When anxiety goes up, cognition goes down. Your job is not to overwhelm a potential client with information. Your job is to guide a decision with structure.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The four private practice KPIs and why first sessions kept matter most
  • How a consultation script reduces no shows without sales tactics
  • Where friction in your intake system quietly costs you bookings
  • Why protecting your calendar increases retention and prevents burnout

If your January surge feels chaotic instead of profitable, this episode will help you tighten one system this week. Not everything. Just one thing. Structure builds consistency. Consistency builds income.

There comes a point in many therapy careers where working harder is no longer the solution. You can raise your fees. You can tighten your cancellation policy. You can fill every slot on your calendar. And still feel financially vulnerable.

In this episode, Ashley Stephens and I explore why supervision often becomes the smarter revenue stream at that stage. Not because it is easy. Not because it is trendy. But because it is structurally different from therapy income.

Supervision is tied to licensure. Associates are required to have it in order to practice and accrue hours. That built-in demand creates a level of predictability that weekly therapy referrals simply do not. When designed intentionally, supervision can become a steady arm of your income instead of a reactive scramble.

We also slow down and talk about ethics. Required does not mean exploitative. Supervisees deserve clarity, transparency, and the ability to reassess the relationship. Supervisors have obligations too. Contracts matter. Review points matter. Documentation matters. When those systems are in place, supervision supports both parties instead of draining them.

And we address the legal realities. Supervising across state lines is not something you assume your way into. The compact does not automatically grant supervision privileges. Most states require full licensure and specific supervisor training. Getting this wrong can cost a supervisee their hours. That is not a risk worth taking.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How supervision creates more predictable income than session-based therapy alone
  • The difference between stable revenue and predatory practices
  • Why long-term supervisory relationships can reduce burnout
  • What to confirm before offering supervision in another state

If you have been thinking about adding supervision to your practice or shifting more fully into it, this conversation will help you evaluate that decision through an ethical and business lens. Not as a side hustle. Not as a last resort. But as a deliberate professional move.

Most therapists are not stuck because they lack insight. They are stuck because insight alone does not create change. In this special replay of a live training with Carolyn Robistow, we unpack Brainspotting basics and explore a bigger question many clinicians are asking right now: how can additional training increase your value without increasing your workload?

This conversation is not just about a modality. It is about embodied knowing. The kind of shift that happens in the nervous system first, and shows up later as clarity, relief, or behavior change. Carolyn explains why the goal of Brainspotting is not symptom reduction, not understanding, and not a better reframe. Those may happen, but they are not the target. The target is deeper integration.

We also talk about what changes for the therapist. Brainspotting requires a different kind of discipline. Less explaining. Less rescuing. More attunement. More patience. More trust in the client’s system to do what it already knows how to do.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why insight does not automatically create change, and what “embodied knowing” actually means in clinical practice
  • The three skills clients are practicing during Brainspotting: noticing, observing without managing, and staying curious
  • The practitioner shift, including WAIT, why am I talking?, and how the dual attunement frame protects the process
  • How specialized training like Brainspotting can support sustainability by reducing overfunctioning instead of adding more to your plate

If you have been wondering whether advanced training could be part of a smarter income strategy, this episode will help you think about it in an ethical, grounded way. Not as a quick fix. Not as a shiny tool. But as a way to deepen your clinical impact without burning yourself out.

Most therapists and supervisors do not struggle because they care too much. They struggle because helping quietly becomes the business model. In this episode, Jennifer Marie Fairchild and I unpack why overfunctioning, loose boundaries, and undercharging slowly erode authority, ethics, and sustainability in both counseling practices and supervision.

We talk about what we see every day in supervision contracts and group practice growth, how good intentions create real risk when demand is not assessed, and why resentment is often a signal that the structure is broken, not the therapist. This conversation is about naming the gap between wanting to help and actually building something that can last.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why helping is not a business model, and how overfunctioning shows up in supervision and practice ownership
  • What supervision contracts reveal about boundaries, liability, and readiness to grow
  • How expanding without demand harms associates, supervisors, and group practices
  • What ethical support actually requires when supervising associates or growing a business

If you feel resentful, stretched thin, or quietly overwhelmed, hear this clearly: it is not a personal failure. It is usually a structure problem. Sustainable practices require clarity, limits, and systems that match the mission.

Most therapists don’t burn out because they’re “too sensitive” or need better self-care, they burn out because they’re doing high level emotional labor and business labor that is not being paid for in a sustainable way. In this episode, Dr. Ashley Stephens and I name the therapist burnout nobody talks about, the burnout that shows up when your practice looks successful on paper, but you feel exhausted, resentful, and stretched thin behind the scenes.

We talk about the invisible workload that hits once you’re full, the pressure to do everything yourself, and why this is not a mindset problem. It is a structure problem. It is a boundary problem. And yes, it is a money problem. We also get honest about supervision, how it can be a smarter revenue stream and a professional next step, and how it can absolutely eat your lunch if you get voluntold into it without systems, time, or compensation.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why “successful on paper” can still feel exhausting, and how unpaid labor quietly builds burnout
  • The hidden roles therapists take on in practice ownership, admin, marketing, and compliance
  • How supervision can either protect your energy or accelerate burnout, depending on structure and support
  • What ethical, sustainable supervision actually requires, including time, boundaries, and compensation

If you’re feeling burned out but everything “looks fine,” I want you to hear this clearly: you are probably working for free in ways you have not named yet. The fix is not more hustle. The fix is clearer boundaries, cleaner systems, and a model that actually supports your life.

Most therapists don’t struggle with marketing because they’re doing it wrong—they struggle because they’re exhausted. In this episode, I break down the difference between shiny marketing (the tactics that look good but burn you out) and sticky marketing (the strategies that actually build trust, referrals, and consistent caseloads).

We talk about why chasing algorithms, keywords, and trends often leads to panic posting and random visibility—and how to shift toward a relationship-based approach that works even when you’re busy. If you’ve ever felt pressured to “do more content” or worried you can’t compete with billion-dollar platforms, this episode will help you reset your strategy without adding more to your plate.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why shiny marketing plays on burnout—and how sticky marketing builds trust instead of stress
  • The KPIs that actually matter for filling your caseload (and where most marketing breaks down)
  • How opt-ins, simple resources, and community reduce no-shows and buyer mismatch
  • Why one focused lead magnet and one ideal client beats doing “all the things” every time

If you’re tired of marketing that fizzles out as soon as your schedule fills—or you want a more predictable, values-aligned way to grow—this episode will help you build a plan that works with your energy, not against it.

For therapists who want clearer systems and less friction, this month’s Paperwork Essential Starter Kit gives you practical tools to streamline intake, documentation, and onboarding. Most practice owners head into a new year by adding more—more offers, more marketing, more hustle. In this episode, I’m asking you to do the opposite.

We’re looking at what actually worked this year, what just felt important, and what quietly drained your time without growing your practice. This is about cutting what doesn’t move the needle and doubling down on what does.

If you want a practice that makes money without requiring you to hold everything together, this episode will help you decide what to keep, what to cut, and what finally deserves your energy.

In this episode, I cover:

  • How to use the 4 KPIs to measure what’s actually bringing in real clients
  • How to identify which services and side hustles make money—and which just steal time
  • How to spot client patterns that support your schedule and income goals

If you want 2026 to feel different, your systems have to change — not your personality, not your caffeine intake. In this episode, I’m walking you through the practice systems that actually save time, reduce chaos, and keep you out of that constant “I’ll fix it later” mode.

I break down what a system really is, why most private practice owners don’t realize what’s broken, and how overwhelm usually shows up right when your practice starts growing. Whether you’re brand new or already busy, this episode helps you build a foundation that can scale without burning you out.

We focus on the three core systems every practice needs from day one: how potential clients become real clients, how you communicate in a way that’s ethical and sustainable, and how money moves through your business without stress or confusion.

In this episode, I cover:

  • How to design a “potential client to client” system that reduces friction and increases show-ups
  • Why your communication system has to be HIPAA-compliant and fit your nervous system
  • How to build a money exchange system before your first client ever walks in
  • The difference between “shiny” marketing and “sticky” systems that actually convert

If your practice feels reactive, scattered, or harder than it needs to be, this episode will help you rebuild your systems so your business can support you, not drain you.

Most therapists think supervision is something they’ll do later—after they feel more confident, have more time, or somehow feel “ready.” In this episode, I’m breaking down why that mindset keeps so many supervisors stuck, underpaid, or holding onto their credentials without ever using it.

I walk you through how to add supervision as a side hustle in a way that actually makes sense for your schedule, your income goals, and your license. We talk about common myths—like believing more supervisees automatically means more money—and what really matters if you want supervision to support your practice instead of draining it.

If you’ve ever wondered how to price supervision, structure your schedule, market to the right people, or avoid difficult supervisee situations before they start, this episode gives you a clear, practical framework to get moving with confidence.

In this episode, I cover:

  • How to structure individual, triadic, and group supervision so you don’t give away your highest-value client hours
  • Why “if you build it, they will come” doesn’t work for supervision—and what marketing actually does work
  • The biggest myths about difficult supervisees, volume-based income, and being “ready,” and how to protect your license while you grow

If you’re holding onto your supervisor credential “just in case,” or you want supervision to become a sustainable income stream instead of a stressor, this episode will help you build it intentionally—from the very start.

For supervisors who want clearer expectations, better boundaries, and fewer headaches down the line, the Supervisor Checklist gives you a practical starting point for contracts, structure, and decision-making.

If running a group practice feels like herding highly educated cats, this episode is going to feel like someone finally put words to what you’ve been living. I’m joined by Amanda Esquivel, a Texas group practice owner who’s scaled to 50 clinicians across seven locations—and she’s breaking down why most “staff problems” aren’t actually staff problems. They’re leadership-role problems.

Amanda names the four roles practice owners bounce between when growth accelerates: babysitter/manager, bottleneck, firefighter, and mentor-leader. And she’s honest about where she’s had to course-correct—because when everything runs through you, you don’t just get busy. You get stuck. Your team gets stuck too.

We also talk about what employees are really reacting to when they complain about low pay, lack of tools, unrealistic expectations, and “promises” that don’t materialize. Amanda shares the transparency practices she uses to educate rather than defend—like showing where the money actually goes, tracking attendance metrics without shaming, and building a training hub so clinicians aren’t reinventing the wheel. The throughline is simple: your job isn’t to be everyone’s emergency contact. Your job is to build people and systems.

If you’ve been living in manager mode, exhausted, resentful, and constantly “on,” this conversation will help you shift back into leadership that develops your staff instead of babysitting them.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The four roles group practice owners cycle through—babysitter/manager, bottleneck, firefighter, and mentor-leader—and how to identify which one is running your practice right now.
  • How to shift out of constant firefighting and bottlenecking by building systems, metrics, and delegation structures that develop staff instead of controlling them.
  • What staff complaints about pay, tools, expectations, and follow-through are really communicating—and how transparency and education reduce resentment and turnover.
  • Practical leadership tools that support retention and accountability, including structured one-on-ones, attendance and caseload metrics, shared training hubs, and role clarity.

If you’re ready to move out of manager mode and into grounded, sustainable leadership, start by grabbing the bonus resourcesthat support this kind of systems-based growth.

If the idea of delegating in your practice immediately brings up fear about HIPAA, confidentiality, or losing control, this episode is for you. In this solo episode, I’m breaking down exactly what you can delegate right now (and what you shouldn’t) so you can protect your license while still getting critical tasks off your plate.

I walk through real-world examples of delegation, from marketing tasks and intake calls to inbox management and follow-ups, and I clear up a lot of the myths therapists carry around about HIPAA. I explain how HIPAA actually works in practice, why delegating the wrong things first can waste time and money, and how proper training—not avoidance—is what keeps your practice safe as you grow.

  • How I think about training and onboarding VAs, including HIPAA education, clear boundaries, and realistic expectations
  • Why I stopped using long written SOPs and switched to short screen-recorded workflows, and how that reduced mistakes
  • How to tell the difference between tasks that actually move you toward revenue and ones that just keep you busy

If your practice feels like it’s running on chaos, Post-its, and crossed fingers, this episode is going to be a breath of relief. I’m walking you through the first five SOPs I believe every therapist should have, because these are the systems that gave me my evenings back, lowered my stress, and stopped my practice from falling apart every time I hired someone new.

I’m sharing the real mistakes I made when I first started working with VAs, like assuming they could read my mind, or handing over tasks without any structure, and how simple, foundational SOPs completely changed my workflow. From weekly check-ins and shared agendas to onboarding rhythms, accountability systems, and clear “when you’re stuck” instructions, I’ll show you exactly how I keep projects moving without micromanaging or constantly feeling behind.

If you’ve ever hired a VA and felt disappointed, or if you’re just trying to organize your practice so it doesn’t drain the life out of you, these are the steps I wish someone had handed me years ago.

If you’re trying to become an LPC Associate in Texas, this episode is going to save you stress, money, and a whole lot of confusion. I invited Dr. Tara Fox to walk us through the entire Texas LPC licensure process, because no one breaks it down more clearly than she does. Together, we unpack what future counselors actually need to know—how to pick the right LPC supervisor, how to avoid supervision nightmares, and how to navigate the NCE or NCMHCE without getting blindsided by outdated or incorrect information.

I share the questions I wish every associate would ask during the supervisor interview, and Tara explains how to evaluate supervision styles, spot red flags early, and choose someone who aligns with your clinical needs and long-term goals. We also talk about why accurate documentation, up-to-date knowledge of Texas counseling board rules, and maintaining your own liability insurance are non-negotiable for protecting your future license.

If you’re a Texas grad student, new associate, or anyone preparing for LPC licensure, this is the step-by-step guidance I wish I’d had when I started.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to prepare for the Texas LPC Associate application, including which exam to choose, how to study, and how to document your clinical hours the right way.
  • What the NCC certification actually means, why it’s not a license, and how misusing it can trigger a board complaint.
  • How to interview and select the right LPC supervisor in Texas, including must-ask questions, contract essentials, fee expectations, and the supervision structures that signal competence.
  • Why you should avoid doing “coaching” while waiting for your associate license—and how to protect your career with liability insurance, boundaries, and an accurate understanding of state rules.

If you want a smoother, more confident transition from grad school to LPC Associate, you’re in the right place.

What actually goes wrong in supervision, and how do you prevent it before it snowballs?

In this episode, Dr. Ashley Stevens and I dive into the most common supervisor mistakes we see across counselor and social work settings. From over-hiring your very first month to being impossible to reach when supervisees truly need you, we unpack the decisions that create risk, rupture trust, and leave new supervisors feeling overwhelmed or blindsided.

We also name the often-ignored realities of supervision: the hours that happen outside your scheduled hour, the necessity of real relationships with work-site managers, and why evaluation and remediation (not personal criticism) are non-negotiable parts of ethical practice. Because supervision isn’t just a teaching role; it’s a leadership role. The sooner supervisors embrace structure, clarity, and the authority the job requires, the sooner the work becomes calm, aligned, and deeply rewarding.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why “one hour a week” is a myth, and how real supervision requires availability, boundaries, and protected space in your schedule.
  • How evaluation and remediation actually protect supervisees, clients, and you—and why relying on self-report is an ethical trap.
  • Why external supervisors must build relationships with work-site managers, and the consequences when you don’t.
  • Why every supervisor needs a contract and a working understanding of state law, even when rules don’t explicitly require it.

What happens when supervision feels intimidating, chaotic, or “too big” to take on?

In this episode, Dr. Ashley Stevens and I pull back the curtain on the early days of supervising: what we didn’t know, what caught us off guard, and why becoming a supervisor is more doable (and more meaningful) than it first appears. From unexpected gaps in supervisee education to the business acumen no one warns you about, we break down the essentials every new supervisor needs to hear.

The myth is that supervision unfolds like a tidy classroom with learners who grow at the same pace. The truth? Your supervisees will span ages, backgrounds, life paths, and competencies. This wide range is part of the joy. When supervisors let go of rigid expectations and ground themselves in experience, structure, and curiosity, supervision becomes a collaborative, energizing process rather than something to fear.

Supervision is also leadership. That means stepping into your authority, addressing tough supervisee dynamics directly, and recognizing that you’re not training employees, you’re growing future colleagues and referral partners. The sooner new supervisors embrace clarity, boundaries, and business savvy, the sooner they protect themselves and serve their supervisees well.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why supervisees arrive with wildly different levels of training, and how to meet them where they are.
  • The business mindset every supervisor needs: from money boundaries to the real-world questions supervisees will inevitably ask.
  • How to avoid rookie supervisor mistakes like pigeonholing your niche or over-assuming competence.
  • Why community matters and how joining supervisor networks combats isolation and burnout.

What happens when supervision feels overwhelming before it even starts?

In this episode, Dr. Ashley Stevens and I name the invisible administrative weight (hours, paperwork, compliance) and show how structure, not heroics, turns supervision from exhausting to sustainable. With clear systems, even tentative supervisors lead with confidence.

The first trap is assuming that organizing must be complex. Clarity is the ultimate goal, not fancy software and color-coded spreadsheets. A simple planner, onboarding checklist, and shared drive can prevent costly mistakes and protect both you and your supervisees. Add in a few digital aids, like a law app that keeps you compliant across states, and supervision becomes less about scrambling and more about teaching.

Supervision is also protection. Requiring personal malpractice insurance, documenting HIPAA training, and keeping dual copies of every note aren’t busywork. They’re care structures that safeguard both sides. When supervisors model these systems, supervisees learn that professionalism is part of ethics, not bureaucracy.

A smooth supervision process doesn’t just save time; it creates psychological safety and trust. The right systems signal to supervisees that their work and their growth actually matter.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to use a few key tools (like the Telemental Health Laws app) to stay legally confident.
  • Why onboarding checklists and planners turn chaos into clarity.
  • How to protect yourself and your supervisees with individual malpractice coverage.
  • The simple documentation habits that keep supervision organized and secure.

What happens when clients don’t come back after the first or second session?

For supervisors, this pattern is more than a numbers problem. It’s a mirror. High early drop-off often reflects gaps in a supervisee’s session structure, boundaries, or clinical stance that can (and should) be coached, not shamed. When supervision reframes “ghosting” as actionable data, associates gain clarity, confidence, and practical tools to keep clients engaged.

The first trap is interrogation disguised as concern. Firing off questions (“What did you do? Why didn’t they rebook?”) breeds defensiveness and shuts down learning. A better path starts person-centered: slow the pace, reflect on what you’re noticing, and observe the process through short role-plays. That’s where parallel process and isomorphism surface, manifesting in over-seriousness that constricts warmth, humor that avoids depth, or family-of-origin patterns that make hard moments feel unsafe. Name the pattern, then coach the skill.

Sometimes the fix isn’t deep. Rather, it’s logistical. Clock placement, session endings, and professional presence matter more than new clinicians realize. Starting late, eating during sessions, or letting intakes feel like interrogations can push conscientious clients to quietly disengage. Supervisors can normalize structure as care: clear openings, visible time cues, and intentional closures that protect the client’s hour.

Evaluation turns insight into growth. Anchoring remediation in concrete assessments (e.g., SPAI for Level 1 skills, CCSR for Level 2) keeps plans specific and fair. Define target behaviors, practice them on camera or in role-play, and document small wins at each supervision. When supervisors coach like future colleagues (not bosses), associates learn to convert first sessions into second, third, and a full course of meaningful work.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to replace rapid-fire questioning with person-centered supervision that reduces defensiveness.
  • Where parallel process and isomorphism show up in early sessions—and how to coach around them.
  • Simple environment and structure fixes (clock, openings/closures, intake framing) that improve retention.
  • How to use SPAI/CCSR-anchored remediation so growth plans are objective, specific, and doable.

What if the fastest way to grow isn’t doing more, but letting go—carefully? We pull back the curtain on how we hired and trained two very different assistants, one in Texas and one in the Philippines, and the systems that make those partnerships smooth, secure, and genuinely business-changing. From the first grading task to a multi-role teammate, and from a five-hour bookkeeping trial to dashboards, course ops, and content workflows, this is a real-world blueprint for delegating without losing your mind.

We walk through the decisions that matter: how to choose between 1099 and W‑2, where to source talent (and what marketplace reviews actually tell you), and how to set pay based on skill, scope, and outcomes. Security and ethics are baked in—NDAs, HIPAA training when needed, and password managers like LastPass so you can grant access without giving away the keys. You’ll hear how simple, living SOPs turn chaos into consistency: short Loom or Camtasia videos, Trello checklists, and clear definitions of “done” that make handoffs clean and quality predictable.

Communication is the backbone. We explain why one primary channel and a weekly check-in beat scattered pings and why screenshots with specific notes eliminate rework. We also share candid red flags—vanishing act replies, task-dumping without initiative, and hidden subcontracting—and the green flags that signal a pro: proactive problem-solving, honest updates, and resilience when life or weather hits across time zones. Most of all, we make the case that delegation is an investment, not a cost. Start with five to ten hours, document one process, ship it, and use the time you get back for higher-leverage work—or real rest.

Ready to turn overwhelm into a system that scales? Listen now, subscribe for more practical playbooks, and leave a review with the first task you plan to delegate.

What happens when therapists abandon group practices en masse? This phenomenon is sweeping across the mental health field, leaving practice owners scrambling to understand why their associates are heading for the exits. At the heart of this exodus lie several critical issues that, once recognized, can be addressed to create thriving, ethical practices where clinicians want to stay.

The financial relationship between practices and clinicians represents the most significant source of dissatisfaction. Fee splits of 50/50 or 60/40 aren't inherently problematic, but the lack of transparency about where that money goes creates resentment. When clinicians generate thousands in revenue but don't understand how their contribution supports the business infrastructure, they question the value of remaining with the practice. Similarly, practices that pass insurance clawbacks to clinicians or make them wait for payment until insurance reimburses claims create financial instability that drives talented therapists away.

Beyond compensation issues, many practices make promises they can't keep. The most damaging is guaranteeing full caseloads to new hires without having the marketing infrastructure or client base to deliver. Therapists who join a practice expecting consistent work find themselves with empty schedules and insufficient income, forcing them to seek opportunities elsewhere. Successful practice owners understand that growth should be organic—adding clinicians only when current therapists are at capacity and there's genuine client demand.

The power dynamics become even more complex when practice owners also serve as clinical supervisors. This dual role requires careful navigation to maintain boundaries and ensure associates feel supported in both their professional development and financial wellbeing. Practice owners must recognize this inherent power imbalance and take extra steps to create safe spaces where supervisees can voice concerns without fear of retaliation.

Building an ethical group practice isn't mysterious—it requires patience, strategic planning, and a commitment to fair treatment of clinicians. Seek guidance from business resources, learn from adjacent industries, and prioritize creating a workplace where therapists feel valued and fairly compensated. The return on this investment will be staff retention, positive word-of-mouth, and ultimately, a thriving practice that makes a meaningful difference in your community.

Toxic supervision relationships damage our profession, but preventing them requires simpler solutions than many realize. Drawing from recent surveys and proposed rule changes, this episode dives deep into what makes supervision relationships thrive or fail.

At the heart of preventing problematic supervision sits the humble supervision contract - a document not currently required by licensing boards but essential to establishing clear expectations. When supervisors charge fees that exceed what supervisees earn hourly without providing commensurate value through amenities like office space, administrative support, or specialized expertise, resentment inevitably follows. Transparency about financial arrangements, scheduling expectations, and evaluation procedures creates the foundation for healthy supervision.

The most troubling revelation comes when examining supervisor termination protocols - or lack thereof. Currently, supervisors have no formal mechanism to end relationships with problematic supervisees, remaining responsible until the supervisee secures another supervisor or upgrades their license. This regulatory gap creates professional vulnerability that puts supervisors in precarious positions when ethical concerns arise. While proposed rule changes aim to address these issues, the path forward requires both regulatory updates and individual commitment to professional best practices.

Whether you supervise clinicians or are under supervision yourself, understanding these dynamics transforms how you approach these crucial relationships. Join the conversation about creating supervision environments that foster growth rather than toxicity, and help shape the future of our profession by advocating for clearer guidelines around contracts, fees, and termination protocols.

When supervision goes sideways, what's a pre-licensed therapist to do? In this candid conversation, Dr. Kate Walker and Jennifer Marie Fairchild pull back the curtain on one of the most anxiety-producing challenges facing associates and interns—addressing problematic supervision.

Many therapists-in-training find themselves frozen when faced with supervision red flags, trapped between speaking up and risking their relationship with someone who holds power over their career. This episode offers practical, actionable strategies for having these difficult conversations with confidence and professionalism.

We tackle the supervision power dynamic head-on, reminding associates that while these strategies empower you to advocate for yourself, the ultimate responsibility for a healthy supervision relationship lies with the supervisor. Learn how to document concerns, use "I" statements effectively, leverage your knowledge of state regulations, and bring solutions rather than just problems to the table.

Perhaps most importantly, we address the boundary-setting that sometimes becomes necessary in problematic supervision relationships. From networking resources to supervision directories, we outline concrete options for associates who may need to transition to new supervision. The mental health field desperately needs dedicated new professionals—you're too important to lose because of discouraging supervision experiences.

Whether you're currently experiencing supervision challenges or simply preparing yourself for potential future difficulties, this episode provides the roadmap and reassurance needed to navigate these waters with professionalism and self-advocacy. Remember that pushing back and developing your professional identity is a normal part of clinical development, not insubordination—and most supervisors genuinely want to support your growth when approached thoughtfully.

Ready to transform your supervision experience? Listen now to gain the confidence to address concerns, set healthy boundaries, and continue your journey toward full licensure with renewed clarity and purpose.

Ever felt trapped in a supervisory relationship that's stunting your growth rather than fostering it? You're not alone. In this candid conversation, we pull back the curtain on toxic supervision practices that plague the mental health profession.

Clinical supervision should be a developmental journey where new clinicians discover their unique therapeutic voice. Instead, too many face micromanagement disguised as "support" that creates clones rather than competent, independent practitioners. We explore how supervisors who constantly shift expectations create anxiety-producing environments where supervisees chase approval rather than focusing on clinical growth. When your supervisor doubles as your employer, those dual roles can create a perfect storm of boundary violations and conflicting priorities.

The power imbalance in supervision is real and undeniable. Many associates and provisionally licensed professionals fear speaking up about inadequate supervision or inappropriate behavior, worried about retaliation that could delay their licensure journey. Particularly troubling is the practice of threatening to withhold verification of supervision hours – an abuse of authority that creates fear instead of fostering development.

For supervisors recognizing these patterns in themselves, we offer solutions rather than shame. Connect with communities like our Texas Supervisor Coalition, utilize resources like the Clinical Supervision Survival Guide, or join our monthly consultation groups. Developing as a supervisor is a process, but that growth shouldn't come at your supervisee's expense.

Stay tuned for our follow-up episode where we'll provide concrete strategies for supervisees to advocate for themselves in challenging supervision situations. Whether you're providing supervision or receiving it, remember that the relationship should fundamentally serve the growth of the clinician and the wellbeing of their clients.

The digital landscape for therapists has fundamentally changed. Gone are the days when optimizing for search engines could guarantee visibility. Now, AI dominates search results, pushing even the most qualified professionals to page two or beyond.

This shift demands a return to relationship-based marketing – what I call moving from "shiny" to "sticky." Rather than competing for fleeting attention with expensive ads or algorithmic tricks, successful therapists are transforming their websites into valuable community resources that foster genuine connections with potential clients.

Your website should do more than showcase your credentials and beautiful headshot. It should position you as an expert while making the visitor the hero of the story. This means crafting copy that speaks directly to their challenges and offering valuable resources before asking for anything in return. Whether it's a downloadable guide for helping kindergartners transition after summer or resources for college students navigating accommodations, these lead magnets create meaningful exchanges that build trust.

The most powerful change you can make today is revising your website's language. Use ChatGPT to help craft client-centered copy that addresses specific pain points. Then create compelling calls to action that offer genuine value – never simply ask visitors to "join your email list" without providing something worthwhile in exchange. Remember, when someone clicks on your resource, they've transformed from a cold lead to a warm one who has actively engaged with your content.

Ready to make your website work harder for your practice? Start by identifying your ideal client's specific challenges, create resources that address those needs, and make sure every element of your site speaks directly to the person on the other side of the keyboard. The days of being the shiniest option may be over, but the opportunity to build meaningful connections has never been greater.

Dreaming of sharing your expertise beyond one-on-one client work? Creating continuing education courses could be your next revenue stream—and it's far simpler than you might think.

Dr. Kate Walker demystifies the process of becoming a CE provider in this practical coaching session. Contrary to popular belief, Texas practitioners don't need special approval or certification to offer continuing education. "If you want to be a CE provider, good news is you already are," Dr. Walker explains, clearing away common misconceptions about regulatory requirements.

The session walks through a three-part framework for successful CE creation: presenting your content effectively, hosting it accessibly, and selling it profitably. From recording live presentations to setting up automated certificate delivery, Dr. Walker breaks down the technical elements that often intimidate would-be providers.

Technology recommendations include Zoom for live presentation, YouTube for hosting, and Podia as an all-in-one platform for selling courses and delivering certificates. "At the end of the day, you have to have a way to automatically provide the certificate," she emphasizes, highlighting how manual distribution quickly becomes unmanageable as you scale.

Marketing guidance focuses on finding viable niches through preliminary research. "If you're wanting to do a CE on backyard gardening for counselors, Google it," she advises. "You've either found a niche that's going to make you a million dollars, or you've found a niche that nobody wants."

For Step It Up members, this preview sets the stage for a comprehensive summer training that will include screen sharing tutorials and step-by-step technical guidance. Additional resources will include specialized training on NBCC certification for those seeking national recognition of their CE offerings.

Ready to transform your knowledge into professional development opportunities that other practitioners need—and will pay for? This session provides the roadmap to get started.

Ever wondered about the intricacies that transpire behind the curtain of the world of counseling? Get ready as I reveal some spine-chilling tales from my supervision journey. In this latest episode of the Texas Counselors creating Badass Businesses Podcast, I dive deep into four unique stories that underscore the importance of understanding the rules for dual-licensed individuals, the dangers of misreporting supervision hours, the perplexity of dual relationships and ethical violations, and the trials faced when guiding individuals with different theoretical orientations. I bring to light the significance of clear communication and firm boundaries within the supervisory relationship, both key for public safety and a prosperous supervision experience.

As a response, I advocate for supervisors to actively pursue multicultural competence, laying the groundwork for an anti-racist foundation in their practice. And here's a surprise - I announce an upcoming webinar with Christina De Luna that will not only offer updates for 2024 but also a golden opportunity to earn a free CE credit. So, why wait? Why is it that most people never reach their goals? Well, we all know about the importance of marketing, right? Emotional connection, however, is often ignored. That's a problem because our mindset about using our voice in our marketing is a huge issue that can propel us forward or hold us back!

As entrepreneurs, we need grit to handle the ups and downs of building a business. That's why I had to talk about podcasting again and share a heavy dose of inspiration and motivation. This episode perfectly illustrates the timeline of success and gives you the tools you need to take action with the right vision in place.

I first talked about podcasting last year when I interviewed Cristal Acosta who hosts Through the Eyes of a Therapist and Cyndi Doyle host of Code 4 Couples. Both told their story building a podcast based on their passions. They built huge audiences and helped their respective communities by transforming their mindsets. This episode builds on those conversations to help you supercharge your confidence, develop a long-term vision, and handle setbacks with grace.

Listen in because I've got some hacks and strategies that will shift your perspective and help you get better results when you decide to start YOUR podcast. Enjoy!

If you're trying to add to your business using online courses, I'm worried about you. Listen in and hear me out!

In this session, I'll walk you through the thought processes and experiences that led me from my early not-so-great sellers to my top selling 40 Hour LPC/LMFT Supervisor Training. In fact, I'm going to tell you how to re-purpose 'failures' into audience attractors.

You see, creating online courses is a lot like cooking a gourmet meal for 10 people that may not like (or who are allergic to) what you are cooking and who may not even know you are throwing a party.

Is that how you want to spend your time?

I want you to be the chef at a restaurant where your potential clients, actual clients, and paying customers go for an unforgettable experience. At the end of the day, you've got to do the work BEFORE you build the course.

So join me today as I make the case for doing the pre-work before you build your amazing, successful, income-enhancing, educational, online course. Tune in and enjoy!

“You're such a tool”… is what we should say to EVERY thing we do in private practice.

In other words, you should be asking yourself, "Is what I'm doing (blogging, writing newsletters, podcasting, advertising on t-shirts) serving me or not?"

Blogging is the topic I want to cover today. In this episode, I share the blog goals that impact how I work right now. These are the latest additions to my arsenal, and I've been blown away by how effective they are!

Take most would-be bloggers for example. Blogs become another 'have-to' on their list of 'to-dos' and so instead of being amazed by hitting their strategic growth goals, they are stressed out by the process and underwhelmed with the results.

In this episode I take you behind the scenes of WHY you should have a blog and WHY NOT and give you great tools so you can hit the ground running.

One of those great tools is the editorial calendar. I've been using a lot since stepping back and revamping the marketing goals at Kate Walker Training (See Episode 18). This is a great way to maximize the team's potential if you are a group practice and even if you're not, it will keep YOU happy and engaged and excited to get the blogging work done.

Why?

So blogging goes from a chore you dread to an amazing marketing tool with a great ROI (return on investment)!

There's a way to conceptualize your use of social media as a stove with two burners: family and friends on one, work and clients on the other. To succeed at social media in your counseling practice, you have to make sure you're using the right burner. In addition to that, I'm going to help you understand how to navigate those best practices to achieve a great social media presence without sacrificing what matters most.

Some counselors get great results using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques like REBT, thinking error worksheets, and mindfulness exercises (MBCT). That's incredible! But here's the thing—many of them are clinical supervisors using these techniques and calling it CBT supervision. That's totally OK - I am not the clinical supervisor theory police 😎 - but they aren't getting the amazing results an actual CBT supervision session can offer. Not one!

Today's subject came from my experience teaching my online 40 hour course to become a clinical supervisor. I noticed that students who thought they were conducting CBT supervision in their video role plays were actually just teaching or using CBT techniques. The sessions were amazing - I saw encouraging people with teacher's hearts working their butts off to showcase their skills - but the supervisee was never remediated or they were just given a few tips and the supervisor never addressed the supervisee's growth developmentally.

These same people completely turned their supervision sessions around when they just made a few tweaks that changed everything for them!

I'm here to share the ins and outs of how I teach new supervisees to use CBT supervision and build a fantastic supervision practice. I'm going to tell you the story of how I help new supervisors shift from 'using CBT words' to providing supervision that teaches, grows, and mitigates liability. This kind of change in focus is actually pretty easy for most counselors familiar with CBT, and my students are able to navigate it masterfully.

Like most overnight success stories, this one has been over two decades in the making. I cover a lot of important takeaways today, tackling everything from understanding why just teaching CBT techniques isn't connecting with your supervisee to figuring out how CBT supervision creates the change you want to see.

Enjoy!

There's a big difference between creating a client note and managing a client file. You see, as counselors, we can be obligated to do a lot more than just document sessions, collect client signatures on intake forms, and put it all away neatly after a session. When we own our practice the full weight of the records custodian rests with us and WE are responsible for creating a safe space for protected health information.

The problem is, when you are a 1099 contract employee. In fact, depending on your employment contract, even in a large practice you may ultimately be held accountable for safely managing the client records you generate.

This is key because, now more than ever, protected information must be - well - protected!

Listen in on this episode to hear stories that brought this reality home to me in a big way. I also share some solutions if you are worried that the records custodian in your practice is YOU.

The clinical supervision contract is by far the most under-taught concept in counselor education. Which is crazy, considering it's the foundation of the post-graduate supervisory relationship! It can be also be much more straightforward than we've been led to believe. So why are so many graduate students AND supervisors reluctant to take a closer look?

We often like to overcomplicate things, but in this episode I share simple tactics that are easy to understand. Just-in-time learning — only acquiring new information when needed for the job at hand — has been the story of my life for me!

Starting from nothing and working hard to build a practice is relatable. But what happens when you finally do it? The inevitable tax season catches many mental health entrepreneurs by surprise.

You see, your family at the holiday dinner table probably doesn't want to hear about the money you may or may not owe the government. But where can you find a safe space to talk openly without offending anyone? Essentially, how do you navigate tax season with grace?

This annual topic, the United States spring tax season, is the perfect example of something that can really mess with practice owners' mindset. We talk about this topic every year in Texas Counselors Creating Badass Businesses, and it is always a hot topic when I'm speaking to even NON-counselor entrepreneurs (taxes are a universal imposter-syndrome producer across the board so I'm not surprised).

But “uneasy lies the head that wears a crown” (Shakespeare, Henry IV, Part 2). The responsibility of running a practice that's changing lives in your community and the important financial decisions involved can weigh anyone down.

Connecting with your potential clients through social media can be a game-changing strategy for any practice. Here at Kate Walker Training, we're already helping many entrepreneurs take advantage of this opportunity. But there's a downside of creating a social media presence for marketing purposes.

A current client finds you and crosses a boundary.

This episode is mandatory listening for any practice owner on social media. Through podcasting, blogging, Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok etc., the relationships you can build with potential clients and other counselors in your industry are second to none! But what do you do when a current client starts engaging with your posts and crosses a boundary? How do you create an informed consent that specifically covers your boundaries on social media? What does damage control look like if things go sideways?

That's the focus of today's incredible episode. Review episode 17 and episode 18 to remind yourself why you are using social media in the first place (spoiler alert: because it's AWESOME!).

Season 2 is all about how practice owners can leverage the power of podcasting, blogging, Instagramming, and all the rest to go from "barely making it" and "overwhelmed" to running a successful practice and achieving balanced mental health.

The lessons I and others have learned on his journey are invaluable for any current or future practice owner, so don't miss this conversation!

My chat with Jody Halsted, owner of Ireland Family Vacations for episode 13 was a great reminder of the importance of creating content that will drive business to your practice. But there is actually a different kind of marketing tool that can solve our growth and monetization woes.

The thing is, this strategy is not the same for everyone. In fact, I've had multiple times in my marketing life where I have been tempted to do too much on too many platforms trying to be too many things for too many people and I've always regretted it. So what am I talking about?

In this episode, I'll take you step by step through the process of creating content that will work all year long no matter what social media platform (that includes blogging and podcasting) you choose. How? Long and short of it; be consistent and avoid confusion.

So would you benefit from joining every social media platform, or maybe just creating quality content for your ideal client on a few key platforms?

This is a question I know many people wrestle with. There is no one size fits all answer, but I hope the perspective I share today will help you make the best long-term decision for your practice, and your balanced mental health.

There's a huge problem that we have to figure out. If we don't, the time and money we spend creating content will be wasted.

In this episode, I want to share my thoughts on the epidemic of mental health practice owners getting on social media without knowing WHY they are doing it and IF their efforts are actually working. This is not about dissing social media marketing. I love using social media (including blogs, podcasts, Instagram, and Facebook) in my marketing. What I'm talking about today is the how and the why behind using social media so you KNOW it is doing what you want it to do for your practice.

When we use these platforms, we have a wonderful opportunity to capture the most valuable commodity out there - the attention of your potential client/fan/customer/purchaser. So how do we optimize our posts for these content consumption habits?

I'm learning a lot as I interview experts in SEO and listen to podcasts about using content to build a brand, and I want to share some of my findings with you in this episode. These tips apply to everything from podcast intros to blog posts and are vital for any mental health practice owner who wants to incorporate social media into a marketing plan.

There's more to come, but join me today for a discussion about the strategies I recommend to use social media effectively!

How do you craft a no-nonsense money plan as a therapist? The best starting point is to change your money narrative from fear to 'I got this!'

Many counselors start out with the exact opposite approach. They overemphasize how hard money is to get and hang on to, and research too little about how to put great financial systems in place to build a comfortable and happy life.

My guest today, David Frank, is the founder of Turning Point Financial Life Planning. He helps mental health professionals learn how to manage their money without losing their mind in the process! Having created a speciality working with therapists, David knows about why some counselors successfully manage their money and build a great life (and yes that includes retirement), and why some don't .

So how do you manage your practice revenue and personal income, even if you have zero experience? What is your number one task when you manage your money? What are money management skills he recommends?

We learn about all of that from David today. Join us for this epic conversation to get the tools and strategies that can save you from learning about managing money the hard way. Trust me—you don't want to miss this one. Enjoy!

One thing we all want to do is to hone our skills so we can improve our work with clients. But, with tips and tools coming at us from all sides, how do we take action without getting overwhelmed?

I remember trying to become better at working with reluctant clients and focusing on all the things I needed to work on to make that happen. The list seemed endless, and I was getting nowhere tackling everything at once.

The strategy that changed everything for me was the opposite of that. Inspired by videos of Steve DeShazer and Insoo Kim Burg and their solution-focused work, I decided instead to focus on a single aspect of my counseling and improve on that.

When I was with a reluctant client, I noticed myself feeling trapped and frustrated. For one particular intake, I decided to focus on helping the client find exceptions and normalizing their struggles. This eventually turned into the 3-Point Wrap-Up I'm going to teach you today. Zeroing in on one issue was eye-opening and it completely changed my approach to helping reluctant clients.

So how can you focus on ending your intake session with a 3-Point Wrap-Up that will help your client win the battle for initiative (be more motivated)? Listen in on this episode to find out about the tactic I use and how you can apply it to your own intake sessions.

There's a huge problem that we have to figure out. If we don't, the time and money we are wasting on software and apps that over-promise and under deliver can sink our practices.

In this episode, I want to share my thoughts on apps, software, and websites that have stood the test of time in MY practice and in my Kate Walker Training company. This is not about the 'chase the next shiny object' that has practice owners running from product to product without ever committing to any of them. What I'm talking about today is an alternative to settling for expensive or no-longer-useful software out of habit or because we just don't have the time to sit and do the research.

Even if you decide to never use these platforms, the time we have at our disposal to try out new software or experiment with new apps is shorter than ever. I know you only have a limited amount of to spend on this today. So how about sticking around for about 25 minutes for these new software ideas?

I'm learning a lot as I go through my apps and software and remember why I landed on them, and why I stuck with them. I want to share some of my findings with you in this episode. These tips apply to everything from scheduling clients to operating your side hustle and are vital for any practice owner.

There's more to come, but join me today for a discussion about the apps and software I use to adapt and keep my businesses running!

What does being a successful marketer online look like? This question often conjures up an image of big Instagram numbers and viral content. But what if that’s not the point?

I’m so happy to talk to my good friend Jody Halsted today. Jody runs an amazing company called Ireland Family Vacations and an award winning podcast where she covers all things Ireland for your next vacation.

Now here’s the thing. I needed help understanding which parts of my marketing were working, which ones weren't, and I was on the fence about starting a podcast of my own. I couldn't figure it all out on my own, so I knew Jody was one to ask!

Jody and I go deep today and chat about the philosophy that drives her business. We discuss finding success online without chasing numbers or virality, creating content that Google AND future customers will love, and winning over Google with great SEO.

This is an inspiring chat about looking at one of the biggest business mistakes practice owners make - paying too much for marketing and chasing meaningless numbers. The beautiful thing? Jody talks about it without losing the magic that makes us love what we do in the first place. Join us, listen in, and enjoy!

So far my winter isn't going great. In fact, I think I've coughed more in the last two months than I have my entire life. OK I may be exaggerating. But in a profession that relies on a steady voice it FEELS like I've been coughing forever. Even so, I decided I needed to sit down and get cozy with my goals for the new year. I knew it would be a mistake to skip this business ritual, even though I've been feeling punky.

You'll have to listen in on today's episode to find out exactly what a great Q1 planning process is, but let's just say that planning during the 'most wonderful time of the year,' can get nasty sometimes!

What I want to talk about today is much more important than a vision board (although I definitely talk about that). Really, it applies to everything we do that can help us define how we want to show up in our business and in our happy life.

You see, being honest with ourselves about the value we provide and the message we want people to know us for is vital. To help you stop chasing numbers that don't mean anything and discover your most powerful asset (YOU), I want to share some things I consider when I plan my profitable Q1.

Join me for this quick episode to learn more! Enjoy, and stay tuned because I have a lot to say about what being a business owner has taught me.

I run a platform that helps counselors find affordable resources so they can keep providing excellent therapy in their communities. I not only run this podcast, I have a Facebook Group, a private practice and I sell courses on my website Kate Walker Training so that this work can be a little more self-sustaining. What I talk about in this episode is how to declutter your private practice so that obsolete products and services don't steal your profits and difficult clients don't steal your peace. Once you follow the three steps, you'll see how decluttering now will result in an amazing 2023.

What I love so much about counselors is that you're not always in it for the money. What I also hear from counselors I coach is:

  • how multiple no-shows can be discouraging
  • how unprofitable passion projects can be a real kick in the gut
  • and how they wish they had more time to work ON their business instead always being IN their business.

Of course, the problem is that as a full time counselors it’s really hard for you all to carve out extra time in your schedule to do this kind of work.

The key here is choosing how to best focus your time. If you haven’t read The Pumpkin Plan Mike Michaelowicz it’s a super helpful resource on this topic.I'll go over some strategies including how to take advantage of your low selling products to turn people into raving fans who will recommend you to family and friends. And I'll even show you how to eliminate the right things (and clients) in your schedule to free up your brain. That’s the key, because once you find your peace, you'll find your profit. What often stops us from taking action is the story our fear tells us. We’re afraid that other people might laugh at us or judge us. But you can't have that mindset when it comes to diving in to your intake paperwork and your policy and procedures manual.

Today’s episode is all about understanding and overcoming that fear and getting your paperwork up to speed before Q1. I had to fight it too! Learning about the rules as a licensing board liaison made a massive impact on my resolve to fight through my own fear and show and tell my own paperwork. Through my blog and You Tube channel, I have shown countless counselors my own paperwork mistakes so they know what to do (and what not to do).

This episode is packed with actionable tips and tools that you can use to defeat procrastination, perfectionism, and negative thought patterns and dive in to your own paperwork and GET IT DONE. We'll discuss intake paperwork, a fair late cancel/no-show policy, and why a policy and procedures manual can make your office run like a finely tuned machine.

I’m so grateful for this time of year when I can help counselors utilize the slower holiday time and get ready to hit the ground running in 2023. 4 What can people get from you that they can’t get from anyone else? This is a vital question that many counselors want to answer. When I asked my fellow supervisors this question, their replies blew me away. So what does a clinical supervisor do? They help new counselors make crucial decisions under duress while no one is watching. In this episode, we talk all about what's required to become a supervisor in Texas. You may want to grow an additional stream of income, or brainstorm some ideas to start a non-profit with your associates. That's exactly what most of us want to do - we want to reach more Texans who need access to mental health services. I talk about basic requirements and how to make sure you are getting what you need to be successful. I love talking about this stuff so I cover even more ground in episode #5. 3 In this "Ask the Expert" session, I’m chatting with Amanda Esquivel LPC Supervisor. She’s been a colleague of mine for a long time, and she is actually one of the original members of Texas Counselors Creating Badass Businesses. Amanda's group practice Room for Change is booming right now, and she talks about hiring LPC Associates to help handling the growth and success of her practice. Often when we first start delegating tasks to free up time, we end up giving ourselves a new job as a micromanager. Amanda tells us how to become more comfortable letting others run with her ideas and things not turning out exactly how she envisioned them. As our businesses grow and change, we sometimes just need to get out of our own way. So listen in, get inspired, and take your business to the next level! 2  How do LPC Associates even use their credential? Can you counsel across state lines? Why is so hard to say goodbye to our 'regulars?' Our practice is what we make of it, that’s why it’s vital to have a conscious approach in everything we do. My inbox has been full of questions relating to LPC Associates in private practice and folks struggling with clients who move away (or move on). You want to help as many people as possible, but you also don't want to break any laws while your doing it. In this episode, we talk about the LPC Associate credential and how to officially and correctly present that. We also discuss specifics like the problem with trying to maintain a client census as a KPI, or trying to hang on to regular clients. Many counselors struggle with paperwork too because they don’t have great information. So we get into a fair late cancel/no show policy today as well.
