Dr. Steve wants to make sure Alex isn't "forcing" his feelings for the sake of this podcast. Alex has been beating himself up a lot lately and it's something he struggles to keep at bay. Also, did one of Alex's therapists quit on him?

Alex is very curious about something Dr. Steve mentioned - the "standard deviations" of therapy. Basically, who gets to decide what is "normal" or "abnormal" in therapy? How does that affect patients like Alex? They then go back to some wedding talk, as well as some learnings from Alex's EMDR.

(sorry about the glitch, we fixed it!) Alex is about to get married to his lovely fiancée Haley, but some sad things are happening along the way. Relationships are blossoming and some are dying. Literally. Who's a friend and who's not? And how do we handle the death of someone we didn't necessarily get along with? These questions and more.

Alex had his first EMDR session and it was intense. He walks Dr. Steve through it and they discuss some of the shame Alex feels for being an anxious person. A lot of deep origin work. Dr. Steve shares a poignant quote - "we are as sick as our secrets." It kind of begs the question - why do we hide the things that cause us to feel pain?

Alex comes back from his semi-annual road trip feeling a bit critical of the way that he sounds on this podcast. Listening to yourself will do that. It doesn't help that Alex has had 4 therapy sessions in one week. So he recounts all of that and what it's taught him about his propensity to analyze things.

A few weeks ago Alex learned that Dr. Steve is a Mormon. Alex is not particularly religious (and watched South Park growing up), so he feels a bit weird having a therapist who is religious. In this episode, Alex talks about wanting to more about Dr. Steve's religion and how it influences him. Dr. Steve asks "why is it important for you to know?" And thus, the session unfolds.

We pick up right where we left off last week. Alex digs his heels in about why this podcast is helpful for him (and not a source of stress.) Dr. Steve listens and poses an interesting question - does stimulus play a role in Alex's stress? Could the source of his stress also be a byproduct of what he loves doing? Classic heady stuff from Dr. Steve.

Dr. Steve is away on official Dr. Steve business, which makes this episode more of a "myself and I." So Alex makes the most of it by answering some questions he's gotten from friends. There really isn't any point pretending that this episode has any structure, because there isn't any.

Pretty fancy. Alex recently decided to take up EMDR to help treat his dissociation, so he shares his experiences with that. Lots to talk about.

Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday season for Alex and like most Americans, he sometimes struggles with that. You know how it is - feelings and whatnot. So he and Dr. Steve talk about it.
This episode is brought to you by Dave.
Alex shares a moment from his childhood that has drastically impacted the rest of his life. Dr. Steve wants to learn more, and that leads to a discussion about the spirituality and the universe (obviously.)
Note: This podcast has no affiliation with the Catholic Church.
Alex continues to feel angry, especially when he plays hockey. It brings up a larger question - do we need to feel ashamed of our anger? Dr. Steve explains that, well, that's complicated.
This episode SHOULD be clean but if we missed any naughty words we apologize.
Alex talks to Dr. Steve about his family of the past and it leads to a discussion about his family of the future.
Groupon continues to not be a sponsor of this podcast
It's okay to be angry, right? Alex is irritable this morning, so Dr. Steve asks him to talk more about where that comes from. We might need another episode for this one...

You ever wonder if people think you're a bit of a jerk? Alex does. All of the time. He struggles with his ability to connect with others and he and Dr. Steve unpack that.
But who knows maybe Alex is just kind of a jerk.
In this episode of "My Therapist and I" Alex recounts his historical relationship with alcohol and shares some things from his past that he doesn't normally tell people (or the internet.)
This episode is NOT sponsored by Bud Light.
Alex recently went on a trip that stirred up some questions about his ability to form friendships. This leads to a candid discussion with Dr. Steve on Alex's relationship with alcohol. Probably more to unpack there.
Additionally, our apologies to Carson Wentz.
Alex follows up on his "Google Maps" assignment and outlines what is important in his life. This leads to an honest question from Dr. Steve and the two discuss what therapy is normally like and the limitations of this format. This is...probably going to be an ongoing discussion.
You ever feel like you're lost? Alex does. Figuratively, and literally. Dr. Steve offers some profound thoughts on finding the right directions.
This episode is not sponsored by Google.
Also, Apple Maps sucks.
Alex meets Dr. Steve (Steve) for the first time...on a podcast...broadcasting his own therapy sessions. So yeah, it's a little awkward. They feel each other out for a bit too long, and then dive into what brings Alex to therapy.
This podcast is the first of its kind, and after many conversations with professionals, it was strongly encouraged that Alex record this intro / disclaimer.
