Word vomit from Autistic Ang about being autistic and how finding this out in her late thirties was life-changing in the best way possible.

I chat about putting surprises in my wife's work lunch, someone singing Beyoncé and church songs at Aldi, and trying to feel normal while everything feels off. Ceasar’s back to being a regular cat, Apollo still can’t handle me going outside, and I’m leaning hard on routines to stay functional. Also: the guilt of enjoying safety and small joys while so many people aren't safe. And a quick mention of my Autism 101 course and Substack.

In this episode I recount how I survived hose water, asbestos, and lead paint - only to be taken down by an air conditioner and a swarm of carpenter bees. Also: the regime thinks LEGOs cause emotional damage, Wi-Fi might make your kid a communist, and grocery prices are now a jump scare.

I think it's weird that we have royalty in this world, one person representing an entire country, award shows where everyone plays dress-up, the insane amount of projection happening in the U.S., why dirty souls get elevated to top positions, and how people on shows like AGT are acting like nothing's going on right outside their building.
And stuff about cats and buttholes and how they don't know they're naked.

America’s not run by leaders — it’s run by clowns who couldn’t organize a lunch order if you spotted them the fries. They honk, they beep, they trip over facts, and somehow they still get reelected. Welcome to the only circus where the tickets are mandatory and the exit is padlocked.
I also chat about cats, rollercoaster emotions, and other stuff I forgot.

The perderders and bunny limbs aren't mentioned until the end of the episode but this was the title that came to mind, so I'm going with it.
In this episode I provide life updates that nobody asked for. A new autistic song I found, Devon Price's newest book, how I don't like people borrowing my stuff . . . and then the perderders and torn-apart bunny. Don't worry it's not as sad as it sounds. (I have a soul I swear.)

No, the whole episode isn’t about Mayim Bialik…but maybe she’ll click on it anyway.
In this random episode: Mayim Bialik has arrived on Substack, and while she hasn’t said she’s autistic, I can see it from space. Somebody whisper it to her? Also Whitney Cummings is officially in the club. I hide from the sun like it’s my job. Alisha gets irritated with me for being “too prepared.” Bella’s about to arrive and I’m spiraling. Also, kettle chips. Lots of kettle chips. And I introduce a new section called The Autistic Script Vault, which may or may not become a thing.

Alisha went next door for what was supposed to be an easy stay. It wasn’t. Two days in and she’s itchy, Urgent Care’s googling her rash like it’s a Reddit thread, and somehow Janice’s fence gets involved. Meanwhile, I’m losing sleep, watching Homestead Rescue against my will, and battling an emotionally manipulative cat. Did I miss her? Oh yes. Did I admit that out loud? You’re damn right I did.
Welcome to the rashy, fence-fixing, plant-poisoned saga of separation, mild codependency, and the slow realization that she might be the only person I’m okay doing life with.

We were guests at a famous person's house. And by famous person I mean the matriarch of the neighborhood. That's right, folks, we've finally made it.
Also, it was my first social event on the books for this year. So of course I had to do an episode about it.

This episode contains zero shame, moderate cat hair, and one fully grown adult admitting that life revolves around four-legged roommates with zero chill and excellent bone structure. I talk routines (theirs), boundaries (none), and how I wish I could be a cat for two days.
If you’ve ever whispered “You’re perfect” to a creature that just coughed up something unspeakable, you might be obsessed too.

Not my typical episode… I was spiraling earlier, thinking about all the atrocities occurring in this country. About how people are suffering, families are being torn apart. About how being white doesn’t mean anything when you’re a female, when you’re a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, when you’re a veteran, when you’re autistic. We’re all susceptible.
I forgot to mention that when I was talking about white men, I don’t mean ALL white men. Just the evil ones. Sorry guys!
To stop the spiral, I journaled about what I feel evil and resistance look like. Making lists when I’m anxious is calming, so I journaled myself some lists. I don’t know how anyone would benefit listening to this, but I always hope you do.

Contained rage is the best way I can describe how I feel after witnessing "mean girl" behavior play out right in front of me but on someone else. This episode is mostly me bitching about mean people (aka dirty souls) and how my personality has been a "problem" my entire life. But also I need to know if people feel similar (or not) to being a spectator when others are bullied.

I also encourage anyone who likes to write to think about starting a newsletter of your own. We need more voices.

This episode is mostly about what I love about being autistic. For context, I've only gotten three hours of sleep. I remember saying "my brain said this or did that" numerous times. But the rest of the episode is a bit fuzzy. I also shared about my interactions with other humans today and how my social skills are oh so bad.

In this episode I read a New York Times article that was published 12/23/24: "Research Finds Vaccines Are Not Behind the Rise in Autism. So What Is?" by Emily Baumgaertner
I have some mixed feelings on this article that I share. I chose to read it because not everyone has subscriptions to the NYT or even gets the paper. I feel like it highlights some decent data but misses a huge opportunity to reframe the rise in diagnoses as a positive shift.

Just some nonsense about actors who can't do accents that aren't their own very well. But mostly just some thoughts I have on social media as I experience it as an autistic person.

Pretty sure my wife has long COVID. I feel so bad for her and wish she didn't have to experience regular colds the way she experienced COVID. Also, I have a few things to say about those trashy, shitty Xmas movies (Netflix's "Hot Frosty" and Prime's "A Christmas Karen") and ponder why oh WHY are these kinds of movies still being made? (Again, not a life-changing episode, but maybe will help pass the time if you're bored.)

I’m done doomscrolling. In this episode (regarding the recent US election), I'm figuring out how to stay informed without losing my mind—avoiding certain shows, finding writers who get it, and learning how to pick my battles. If you're also riding the rollercoaster of hope, anger, and confusion, let’s talk survival strategies.

I think Ellen DeGeneres is autistic
I hate alarms unless it's for something fun
Garage sales are still gross
My wife ate 5-day-old perderders
I use calendars to schedule TV shows, not appointments
Chatted with my niece on the phone for half an hour. Her dad almost died last week. However, we talked about scooters while I totally forgot to ask her how he's doing.

Just a short little rant about gameplay so I can move on with my day. I'm so tired of watching competitive shows and there's always that person who takes all game moves personally, is willing to throw their yearslong friendship with someone away over it, etc. It's a GAME. There's no gray in this for me, it's all black and white: as long as the rules are followed, ANYTHING GOES. Why is this such a hard concept for people to grasp?

It's ideal for any adult who recently found out they're autistic. I've got resources, fun activities, hours of audio, cool shit to learn about, etc. By the end of it, you'll have an excellent grasp of what it means to live authentically.

I also talk about ethics and how I did something I don't feel very good about. Then some thoughts on The Bear.

Just had therapy. I recorded this sitting in my car in the parking lot of Wegmans. It just dawned on me today, after therapy, that going mute is scary for me to experience. Like, I've always had extreme anxiety and fear around it, but never sat down and took a good look at wtf is this and wow I feel so scared when it occurs.
In this episode I talk about instances when I've experienced selective/situational mutism and that basically I was more focused on coping with it, hiding it from others, and the fear of how long will it be before my voice comes back, that I never looked into it any further than that. Hopefully that makes sense.

Sometimes I still feel like I'm not worth whatever nice thing someone is willing to do for me. Today, it happens to be in the form of a client wanting to pay me quite a bit of money well in advance of even starting his project. He's a regular, and we have a trusting relationship, but I still spiraled at the thought that someone would trust me like that.
Also, I admit that I SUCK at freelancing. It's so hard.

I feel like autistics experience gratitude more frequently than ordinary people. In this episode, I read a few entries from my gratitude journal and explain the meaning behind each thing I’m grateful for. I also wonder if others feel grateful for similar things because they’re material, but they make my life easier.

My wife is still recovering from COVID and it’s slow-going. It’s hard to take care of someone for days because life is already hard for me but more so when I’m responsible for making sure my wife does what she needs to do to get better. This episode may sound all over the place, so sorry about that. It’s just hard to admit this stuff is hard.

Apparently I only have enough empathy to take care of my sick wife for three days. She got COVID for the second time, and I'm taking care of her, which I don't mind since she's my wife. However, it seems I only have three days' worth of all the things you need to do and feel for someone who is sick. Once that fourth day hits, my empathy vanishes! WTF is this? Is this an autistic thing, or does this just confirm the awesome choice I made to never have kids? (Cuz 18+ years of that is a no-go)

This is maybe an episode you’ll want to skip. My wife got COVID for the second time. I’d been feeling stressed and anxious about what this week would be like for me, and that was before she tested positive. Then I suddenly wasn’t stressed or anxious because she’s my priority and so I immediately shifted into problem-solving mode for lack of a better description. I feel this episode is all over the place but I’m hoping this is relatable.

I think autistic people are very efficient and out-of-the-box thinkers, and we can be damn good at problem-solving. However, I’ve come across so many people who think my way is wrong, when, in fact, it’s the better way for ME.

I realize there are many autistic people who buy real food from the grocery store and make real meals. I am not one of those autistic people. In this episode, I read from several of my Instacart grocery list, so you can see the kind of odd items I buy on a weekly basis. I felt some shame about what I eat, and how I shop until I found out that I am autistic. So if you shop like this and have felt embarrassed, you're not alone.

I read out loud the article “Seeking the Autism Diagnosis” in the Sep/Oct 2023 issue of Psychotherapy Networker. It was written by a therapist, who isn’t even autistic herself. She gives assessments to people who think they might be autistic, but in this article, she doesn’t seem very validating, and sounds kind of ignorant.

I watched an episode of the Amazing Race last night, and the contestants were in the airport, trying to figure out what flights to take. It reminded me of all the anxiety I had when I used to travel on airplanes all the time back when I was in the military. I haven’t been on a plane since 2007, however, I still think some of this information could be relevant to those of you who travel and experience some of the difficulties that I had when I used to travel.

I just dropped my wife off at a ketamine therapy session, where a therapist is observing her while under the influence of ketamine. How does being watched for two hours not give her anxiety? It reminds me of all of the situations where I was being watched and how much that bothers me.
The other day, my sugar crashed. I’ve never experienced this before and thought it wasn't a real thing, just something people say when they are really really hungry. Now I feel like an ass because of all the times I invalidated people who said they were experiencing a sugar crash. This is exactly the situation that has happened to me throughout my entire life, where people don’t believe me because they haven’t experienced something I have. I feel like a hypocrite and wonder if there's a term for something like this.

This week has been filled with things that I cannot do because they are hard! I reached a breaking point because I felt like I wasted so much time trying to figure stuff out.
An editor I just connected with online shared they are also autistic. Mind blown! This is the first time someone in my professional world shared something like that! I feel so understood.
My wife did her ketamine retreat. It worked! I also learned more about my autism and how I handle major anxiety.
My wife started her ketamine retreat therapy thing today. She isn’t adhering to some of the guidelines and it is giving me so much anxiety.

My wife goes on her ketamine retreat in one week. I found myself getting excited about how life-changing this can be for her (and us) and imagining all the potential positive outcomes. Then I noticed I wasn’t allowing myself to become too hopeful because I don’t do well with disappointment. I of course hope this is relatable and that I don’t sound too all over the place.
And it didn't go so bad. The new neighbors had a U-Haul in their driveway. I mowed the side of the house and didn't look over at them once because, you know, making eye contact would mean I'd have to stop and talk to them! So I didn't. And as a reward, one of them followed me to my house and introduced himself. Since I felt like a complete moron for not having done that first (since it's the polite thing to do), I told him I'm autistic and struggle with socializing.

Don't worry, it's not THAT kind of butt stuff, but there is some stuff about butts. Wish I could have seen the look on your face when this episode title popped up on your phone. Anyway I had a doctor appointment today with a rare treat: a male doctor! That appointment was half as long as they are with female doctors. This makes my autism happy, so I chat about it.
I've removed my autism mask, for the most part, but now I'm officially removing my COVID mask when I'm out and about. This is NOT a political episode. I just needed to process my feelings about this out loud. Mostly because I don't understand how I am super decisive about something one second, but five minutes later can't make a decision about something else. Especially when there is So. Much. Information. About that thing and I STILL cannot reach a decision without defaulting and going with what the majority of people are doing. Can anyone relate to this? Is this an autistic thing or just a normal human thing?

Is it just me or does it seem there are more of us autistics in the world than what people think?
I finally understand why I've had auditory processing issues my whole life. I just didn't know that's what it is. I share what some of those issues are.
I was such a bitch in past relationships, which I regret now. I broke up with guys left and right, but married the first woman I got with lol. I talk about regrets I have regarding the ways I chose to break up with people.
I think it is important to talk about autistic awe and how much joy nearly anything can bring us - more so than many ordinary people from what I’ve been learning. This episode is just me sharing some of the things that I am in awe of.
Unfortunately I had my very first "sit-down" tax appointment. It was an hour I will never get back. The tax preparer was slow AF and died multiple times in my mind.
I'm dealing with a client who doesn't seem to know what they're doing. And they think it's ME who doesn't know. I wish people could communicate clearly when it comes to work. This is a venty episode.
I catch feelings all the time - other people's feelings. This is described as a feature of empaths, highly sensitive people, and autistics. They all seem to be the same to me. This has been an issue for me recently, so I wanted to process through it.

This is for all the so-called weirdos who think what we do is pretty normal, just not to ordinary people. Although in all fairness there are a couple things I do that even fellow autistics would scratch their heads about.
For anyone who actually reads these descriptions, my autistic brain trailed off when I started talking about the conversation between my therapist and me regarding scripts. She suggested I save a file on my computer with scripts so that when someone asks me something specific, I'll have the answer I need already saved and can just pull it up. So I saved what I wrote to that lady to use for future interactions. This will make sense after you've listened to the episode, which is about me telling someone I don't know that I'm autistic and have auditory processing issues.

I told on myself and informed my friend I lied to her a couple weeks ago. It felt great. That's not sarcasm, it really felt good to explain an aspect of my autism and not be judged for it.

I want to know if there is such a thing as autistic paranoia, or is it just me who is paranoid? I go to great lengths to avoid doing anything embarrassing in public but I always feel like people are watching and judging me anyway. Can anyone relate to this?

While I was waiting for my car inspection, I was annoyed by someone's complete lack of awareness. Ranty episode.

I lied to a friend recently about why I couldn't hang out with them but now I'm noticing that I feel guilty for doing things like that. I've done this so many times throughout my life because I never know how I'm going to feel on the day I'm supposed to hang out with someone. I realize that I can't do that anymore and need to just be honest about my autism and accept that I can't control how others will react to my explanation.

I ramble about crying when someone shared their autism diagnosis, realizing I can't do normal grocery shopping, and that I have a crack in my windshield.

I half-ass doing things just as much as I don't. What sense does that make? I feel like because I'm autistic I'd rather put energy toward things that I'll struggle with rather than on things that don't matter too much. Is this autism or am I just a lazy bitch? Feel free to let me know.

Many autistic people have coordination issues. I am definitely one of them. I fall down stairs, trip over nothing, and bump into everything. Hopefully you can relate!

Whenever I do something embarrassing (or naughty) in public, I run. Whenever someone I’m in public with does something embarrassing, I run. All throughout my life I’ve had people not believe me when I’m being honest, so whenever possible, I will escape a situation ASAP because if I wasn’t there when it happened, then it wasn’t me! Do other autistic people do this?

Sometimes I get weird looks when I say out loud the things I wonder about. We autistics have such active imaginations... but is mine TOO active? Are there any autistics who are curious about all kinds of random shit and had people think those are weird things to wonder about?

This episode is me complaining about things that don’t really make sense. The episode is not meant to be negative or bring anybody down, but I have yet to meet autistic people who view these things the same way as I do, but I know they're out there.

It only took five minutes for my people allergies to kick up. This is me babbling about a chocolate shoppe visit that took a turn to Autism Land.
There are so many positives to being autistic and feeling deeply is one of them. When I'm not having sensory processing issues I’m having awesome sensory experiences that I feel on such deep levels that I try my best in this episode to describe.

I often wonder how people miss the things I see, smell, etc., and I can't figure out if this is exclusive to autism and neurodiversity or if ordinary people are like this too.

Most of the time I have no idea how to initiate a conversation with people or what to say in response in certain situations. I don’t know what else to say here.
It doesn't take much for someone to hurt my feelings and for me to spiral as a result. I've been told my whole life to get thicker skin but now I'm learning to validate how I feel. Learning that I'm autistic allows me to be aware of what is going on in my head when I feel hurt and for the first time I realized I'm nonverbal when I shut down.
This episode has nothing to do with a baby shark. But the chorus of that song that goes do do do do do is what is going on in my head right now which is the best way I can describe my current emotional state. My life doesn't make sense right now just like the title of this episode.
The holidays cause many interruptions to my routines, which results in so much frustration. This is just me venting about the craziness I feel at having my routines interrupted consistently at this time of year.
My preference for sameness extends to every aspect of my life. Learning that this is an autistic trait has allowed me to accept this about myself.
Doesn’t catastrophic and neurotic kind of mean the same thing? Is there really that much of a difference? I am a catastrophic thinker on pretty much a daily basis. Is this an autistic thing or just plain neurotic?
It's a few days before Christmas. People are out getting last-minute gifts. There's also a winter storm approaching, so even more people are out. And I'm autistic. Need I say more?
I went from having a purpose for many years to not having one for many years to now having rediscovered it.
Learning that I'm autistic has been so liberating. I changed some stuff immediately because it was getting too hard to keep the mask up, so autism gave me the courage to just be me whenever possible.
To me, meltdowns are like minefields. You better step carefully or you might trigger one. Yesterday my minefield was a car dealership, but good news... I avoided a meltdown! This is me just talking about what I did to prepare for the trip to the car dealership, which was hours away, and the amount of time I spent making sure I didn't cause a scene.
More of a lighthearted episode about things ordinary people seem to understand or be okay with, but I just don't. Is it because I'm autistic?
I have such difficulty being interrupted when I’m doing something. It's like I short circuit. Small barriers like these are so frustrating and I often feel like I can’t control my responses to them.
I don't know how helpful this episode is because it's just me talking about how I dealt with things in the past and I am still dumbfounded on how I got this far in life without knowing I'm autistic. Would services have helped me? I don't know because I forgot to talk about that.
I talk about my childhood, inadequate/neglectful parenting, what my relationship with my family looks like now, and if things could have been better had I known as a kid that I'm autistic.
I talk about how the holidays were for me as a child (crappy) and how they are as an adult (not crappy).
A running theme throughout my life is feeling like others view me as being too much. I’m not even talking about being high maintenance. I’ve had people say I’m too loud, too annoying, too upset, too opinionated... Am I too much because I’m autistic?
An update on my procedure and how it's felt having to completely rely on others (as an adult) for the first time.
I talk about how I started my own business, pros and cons of working for myself, and how this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my mental health and well-being, as well as my newfound status of autistic.
I actually don't recommend listening to this unless you're that bored. Just processing some things out loud and trying to work through my stress and anxiety.
If you like listening to people who lose their train of thought multiple times, then by all means, please press play. Mainly I verbally process all the changes I'm dealing with and the anxiety that comes along with them.
I constantly think about organizing something and making it more functional. I get fixated on things that are unkempt. So this episode is just me talking about how much I love organization and order, what my methods are, and how learning I’m autistic has allowed me to accept this aspect of myself.
I say thank you way more than I probably should. Like, all the time. Is this an autistic thing or just a me thing? Email me at autisticang38@gmail.com if you're like this too!
I'm having obsessive thoughts about this ginormous cyst in my stomach and I wish I could stop them. I'm hoping that this episode helped me get all that crap out of my head but if not, maybe someone can relate to my craziness.
I've never liked touch and now I know it's because I'm autistic. People have always made me feel weird for not wanting a hug or for not wanting someone to stand so close to me. I hope someone can relate to this.
I recorded this episode minutes after I got done with the dentist to show what it's like for me at these kinds of appointments. I am pretty anxious (more than usual) in this episode so hopefully it makes sense.
I want to talk about something I love about being autistic, which is having an active brain. It just keeps going and going with all kinds of thoughts and ideas. I mean, I'm never bored! But I wonder if there are autistic people out there that think about the same kinds of things that I do because I haven't come across any yet. Can anyone relate?
So rumination is pretty common among us autistics. I've been doing a lot of it lately. This episode is just word vomit about all of the irrational thoughts I have about things, specifically all that I've had going on this past week, and why I don't think rumination is always a negative thing.
I was able to prevent myself from having a meltdown but it wasn't easy. Now that I think about it, I don't think I explained how exactly I prevented it. But that's not the point of this episode. The point is that hopefully you'll find this experience relatable so you know it's not just you. Why do us autistics get so worked up about seemingly small matters? Well, because they're not small to us.
It sucks feeling like you don't belong, until it doesn't. I talk about how it felt being different pre-autism self-identification and how awesome it feels now knowing that I do, in fact, fit in.
I talk about what employment has been like for me. Having an autism lens through which to look back at my various issues in this area is super helpful because it all makes sense now. But still... I'd rather get shanked than have to work with/for idiots ever again.
I'm not very good at handling change, even if it's a positive change. This is just me processing out loud all the things happening in my life in such a short amount of time and how overwhelming it feels.
I talk about the "preparation" I do to get ready to socialize with a friend or go to an appointment and how I feel when someone cancels on me (usually pretty happy). I have trouble with just about every aspect of socializing, which is thanks to being autistic, but these types of interactions I talk about are easier for me to deal with because I know when they’re going to happen.
Disordered eating is prevalent within the autism community. I share about my eating habits, my issues with food, and how learning I'm autistic has allowed me to accept my food issues as well as embrace my strange but prefered methods of eating.
Someone came to the door. I wasn't expecting them. It gave me so much anxiety. This is a very rambly episode about what goes through my lovely autistic mind when stuff like this happens.
I take issue with the word DISORDER in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Why? Cuz it's not a disorder! I share my perspective on this diagnosis and why I feel like it should be removed from the DSM.
Why do us autistics struggle so much with making choices? Listen to me talk about my decision-making nightmares.
There are ups and downs with everything, and autism is no different. Listen to me babble about some of the ups and downs (from my perspective) and how truly awesome it is to be autistic.
I explain (or at least try to) why it's so difficult for me to communicate and how learning I'm autistic has helped me better understand this embarrassing aspect of myself.
I share info I've learned about autistic meltdowns as well as what my own meltdowns look like, how intense they are, and what I'm doing to lessen both their intensity and frequency.
I share some of the books and podcasts I've found that have helped me accept, understand, and embrace my autism.
Being autistic, I don't understand why people use idioms to explain what they mean. Why can't you be direct and use the actual words and not some saying that doesn't even make sense?
I share the details of my routines, why I have them, when they started, and how being autistic helps me accept that I live my life according to time and routine.
Why I have trouble socializing, why I don't ever want to, and how learning I am autistic means I don't have to now!
I talk about what masking is, how I've masked my entire life, and how free I feel to just be me now.
Thoughts on the rules I will and will not follow. Also, I don't know the rules for relationships, etc., so...what do I do?
My thoughts about being self-identified autistic, why I don't want a diagnosis, and how getting a diagnosis could be beneficial for others.
