Change is hard and can be an obstacle if we let it.

After clearly articulating my financial goals, I must connect my faith to this project. I'm a believer, and faith and finances are clearly intertwined - in my mind. Faith without works is dead - so I have work to do. This is not as easy to share, because I can't see the future.
Well, you're welcome to come along for the ride. I have no idea what the Lord has in store. I just believe that in 3 years, we will be paying cash for a new construction home. In the meantime, there's a lot to do. Creating the financial plan for FIRE (financial independence/retiring early) is a concrete step that I can definitely get behind.
I'll do what I can, and leave the rest to God. That's the beauty of faith.
If that FIRE isn't just shut up in your bones, but a financial freedom goal on your to-do list; this series is for you.
As I walk through my own plan for financial freedom, we'll explore what big picture items should be included. Step #1: Clearly identify what financial freedom means to you and what it will look like when you accomplish it.
I lay my plans out in plain English. Next, I want you to be able to clearly articulate yours.

Should you be intentional about upgrading your group of friends?
Absolutely!
Can you do it without being weird?
Absolutely!
Exploring the qualities to seek out in new friends to upgrade your social circle.
We say yes. So much so that this week, we're continuing to explore ways to improve your social circle without being weird. If Jim Rohn is correct and association impacts progress, then it's we should be intentional about the people we invite into optional places in our lives. I'll give you tips on how to develop a social circle that is mutually beneficial.
If Jim Rohm is right and we are most like the five people we spend the most time with, the quality of your social circle is vital. If that quality is poor, we're going to look at specific actions this week you can use to upgrade.
A look at what financial independence is and how you and I can take steps to make that happen while we are young enough to enjoy it.
I speak with Todd Tressider, the Financial Mentor, and Mindy Jenson of Bigger Pockets to get their experience achieving financial independence.

But he got focused and didn’t let those student loans become a permanent fixture. This story is for students, parents of students, or just those who think I’ll never get out of debt – it can’t be done. I’m here to say, after repaying 107K in debt – debt freedom is possible. You just might need a little accountability.

My friend released an interesting article highlighting people who used blogging as an accountability technique to help themselves dump a massive amount of debt.
I reached back into the Midday Money Show archives to pull out conversations from some of them who've joined me as guests in the past.
Accountability just may be your secret ingredient.
Paying off debt is a long-term goal and can definitely be "boring" here and there. To achieve success, I'm sharing how to break the big goal into manageable chunks and knock out a few quick wins.
You can trick yourself into staying focused over the long-term by taking action on interim steps for the win.
Sticking with goals that can't materialize quickly can be a challenge. However, we're covering tips this week to stay focused.
Before we get started on the action, there's a little preparation necessary to start your debt-free journey off right.
Today is the final summary of the Miracle Morning Challenge. However, the challenge continues. Join me at DebtFreeDivas.org/miracle to take the 7-day challenge. Your productivity with improve and this can only do good things for your journey out of debt.

I'm challenging you over the next 7-days to reset your morning routines and let's see if this has any impact on your ability to dump debt faster.
Join me at DebtFreeDivas.org/miracle to join the challenge.
Friday is a time to spend a little QT with #teamdebtfree.
The question comes for Ebony M. She wants to know what to do first - save or pay off debt.
I have a few thoughts on that topic.
The fourth and final lesson I'm gleaning from Phyllis this week is the need for persistence.
I'm only on Day 22 of my Tangle with a Trespasser and already I've made a few mistakes, potentially cost myself an unnecessary $260, and wasted time that could be used in furthering my goal.
Just like your journey out of debt, everything won't go a smoothly as promised. But we have to resolve to press through. It's not easy. Dumping debt can be frustrated and filled with do-overs. Don't quit. In the meantime, here's the latest on this saga of my house being held hostage by a squatter.
Lesson #2 learned from this squatter applies directly to getting out of debt. I have work to do because Phyllis isn't going away on her own. You have work to do because debt will not magically disappear.
Working through debt is not easy, but it sure it worth the effort. I'm assuming once I get the squatter out, I'll be just as elated.
On your journey out of debt, you will receive so much advice. Much of it will be well-intentioned, but just not helpful. Surround yourself with people who have either been where you are and accomplished their goals or are where you want to be. Like Uncle Dave says, don't take advice on money from broke people - unless that's your goal.
It's funny, this tangle with the trespasser illustrates that advice perfectly. Even though that's not her intention and she still needs to go! While I'm here, let's see what we can learn from ol' Phyllis.
I purchased a house through a foreclosure auction. It came with a squatter who is refusing to leave. This house is part of my plan to achieve financial freedom.
I am learning, from this squatter, that financial plans aren't always easy. They aren't obstacle free. That doesn't mean they are not worth it.
All week, I'm sharing this saga and what it can teach us about accomplishing financial goals. Trust me! There
When inviting potential accountability partners to participate in a money group, you want to nail down a few specifics. This helps people determine if the group is a good fit. I give you three questions to answer.
Remember, the research shows that you are more likely to reach your goals if you:
Write them down.
Share them with a friend.
Review them weekly.
But not every friend makes the best accountability partner. We'll look at three characteristics today to help you choose wisely.
I'm catching up with three Midday Money Show - minute topics in one episode.
This taboo is set up to help employers not you. Here how sharing your salary can help you be open to opportunities.
Do you have a plan to fix your finances???
We like to talk about the purchases that make great Facebook photos, but not the strings that come attached. The debt for cars, trips, new clothes, etc.
Not focusing on debt and only on the glitz and glamour of stuff will keep us in a loop of needed new stuff and adding new debt. I'm talking about how a debt-focused approach will break this money taboo and debt's hold on your life.
I invite you into a private conversation that's been happening for years. I have a number of girlfriends who are open to talking about a tough topic - money.
You'll hear from one of my money mentors and a contemporary in this adventure toward financial freedom.
We also share practical tips to add a money mentor or accountability team to your life. If you were born with a financial planning spoon in your mouth, then surrounding yourself with money mentors is the next best thing.
This week, we're looking at mistakes with money and how we have recovered and learned to do better moving forward. We've all made mistakes. Mistakes with money in the past do not define you.
Negative self-talk can wreak havoc on your ability to stay focused on a debt-free goal. Protecting your mental fortitude is vital.
We can talk ourselves out of success and stay stuck in a state of overwhelm simply by letting negative thoughts take over. I have a simple trick to help you get over this hump.
You got this!
When facing daunting tasks or setting stretch goals, fear can slow us down. On this "I have a Word" Wednesday, I will share something that helps me stay upbeat in the face of a challenge or the great unknown.
Complete with a cheesy kid's bob tune (I really like it - I'm into cheese), this Midday Money Show Minute will encourage you to face down fear with a powerful tool in your toolbox.
Retired US Navy General, Navy Seal, and University of Texas chancellor broke the Internet (I guess) when he suggested his #1 tip for helping to change the world was to make your bed.
Hmm??? So mom was right???
From his lips to our ears, the Navy man says this little tip can revolutionize the way we get things done. Maybe it is the little things...
If I can do one thing, it's getting myself back on track. Why? Because I've had plenty of experience. Becoming overwhelmed may be a fact of life for anyone who endeavors to attempt anything meaningful.
Staying stuck in that place is not a requirement.
I'm talking to you from a very personal place because it relates directly to staying focused on getting out of debt. You'll be successful because you don't give up.
I believe that because I've lived it. As I take on new challenges, I hope you can receive encouragement to get back on track or rev up your progress if the energy fades.
If you're living from paycheck to paycheck, putting money aside for savings might seem like a pipe dream. This podcast, originally recorded in 2011 when I had co-hosts, covers tried and true tips for generating extra cash. We need to look no further than the ant as we figure out how to pad a saving's stash before an emergency strikes.
Also, if you want to know what Osama bin Laden can teach us about the need to save, I apparently went there.

Anita Dhake has taken her plan for financial independence from concept to reality. It started – of course – with paying off debt. That has to be the number 1 priority - financially speaking. As you enjoy Anita’s story, think about what your plan is. Do you have it clearly defined? Not like ours was in the past - “someday I want to be a millionaire”. But have you figured out what it will take to reach your goals. If you are dumping debt right now. Keep pushing. If not, there's no time like the present.
I chat with Independent Management Consultant, Joanna Zarach, about a small thing that is making a huge impact on retirement savings. Mutual fund fees are a given, but do you know a 2% change in fees could have a $300,000 impact on the amount of cold hard cash you have to retire on.
I agree, financial books can sometimes look like a foreign language. However, Joanna breaks down exactly what you should look for to evaluate the fees you're paying. Performance may not be as meaningful if you're giving away cash unneccessarily.
You are 33% more likely to meet your goal if you:
Write it down.
Review it weekly.
Share it with a friend.
You make the list. I'll bring the friends. We're transforming money through an accountability project and you're invited.
I'm also bearing my soul about why the podcast has been slacking lately. I guess I need some accountability too! Let's work on this together.

I gathered a panel of experts to contribute to a fascinating discussion on whether college-educated women should risk losing $25,000/year by marrying someone who isn't similarly positioned. The panel tackles tough questions like shoud women filter out potential suitor based on educational attainment? Should highly education women "settle" in the pursuit of love? Should women approach relationships from a more pragmatic perspective - like our Russian counterparts.
Is marrying for love an outdated notion?
Along with the revised podcast, we bring in crowd-sourcing to share tips for enjoying life while dumping debt. Get this one thing right and your journey out of debt will run smoother.

Since divorce has a disproportionately negative impact on the financial lives of women, we glean helpful tips for women facing this transition. Divorce may be a setback, but it doesn't have to derail your debt-free dreams.
This is the third episode in the series on health and fitness that we first ran in 2012, Fiscally Fit.

Dana Sharp may have hit the parent jackpot. Her father was frugal before it was fashionable. He began his career as a Chicago Public School gym teacher and worked over his lifetime to amass a considerable fortune that his great grandchildren still benefit from to this day. Stanley's groundbreaking research of high net worth people in this country in The Millionaire Next Door.

I’ve put together a 7 week guide to dumping debt called The Great Debt Dump that follows my story paying off $107,000 of consumer debt. It merges my first successful attempt completing a long distance race. My first 5K. with the principles need to successfully become debt free. I’m not a runner, don’t really care for the practice…but I don’t like being in poor shape more. The same could be said for being in debt.
Paying off debt is not necessarily the most interesting activity, but being in debt sucks – by comparison. So in both cases you do what you have to, until you get what you want.

My wonderful husband joins the Midday Money Show for the first time in our podcasting history to open up our private time (a small slice) for the purpose of advancing personal finance knowledge. In this episode, we lay out both of our positions on why leasing is a bad (my take) idea or why it works (his thoughts) for some.
As I listen to both of our sides, I think....I should have said this....or I should have said that. Either way, there is still much left to discuss. This is a good introduction. However, I like this exercise because we have many personal finance areas of contention. They can be heated, but they don't have to be.
Maybe all of our topics of intense fellowship should be recorded for the masses to partake in. We might just always be on our best behavior. I hope this helps you think through a few topics if you are considering whether to lease, fix your current car, or buy a new (or new to you) car in the near future. Enjoy!
