Hey everybody - Travis here - today I am excited to dive into a foundational concept in psychology that's pivotal for personal growth and relationships - Attachment Theory! While we don't have a guest on today's episode, I will guide you through this enriching topic.
In this episode, we're going to explore some fundamental areas:
Origins and Founders of Attachment Theory: We delve into the mid-20th century work of British psychologist John Bowlby, often regarded as the father of attachment theory. Bowlby focused on the bond between the child and caregiver and how these early relationships impact emotional and psychological development throughout one's life. Plus, we'll discuss how Mary Ainsworth expanded on Bowlby's work with her famous Strange Situation experiment, which classified different attachment styles.
Types of Attachment Styles: Understanding the four primary attachment styles - Secure, Anxious-Preoccupied, Dismissive-Avoidant, and Fearful-Avoidant (Disorganized) - and how each style manifests in relationships and personal behavior. We'll also touch on how these styles influence conflict resolution and mental well-being.
Impact on Relationships and Mental Health: How your attachment style affects your interactions, conflict management, and overall mental health. Securely attached individuals tend to have better stress management and healthier conflict resolution, while those with insecure attachment styles may struggle more in relationships and mental health scenarios.
Challenge Question: Reflecting on your personal relationships, can you identify any patterns that point to a specific attachment style you may have? How do these patterns influence your interactions and conflict resolutions with loved ones?
So grab a notebook, because you're going to want to take notes as we navigate this complex yet crucial aspect of personal development. And remember, understanding your attachment style can be the first step towards healing, growth, and more fulfilling relationships.

We'll explore creating a comfortable space for open discussions regarding changing bodies and sex, especially between fathers and their offspring.

Welcome back to The Therapy4Dads Podcast! In today's episode, we have a very special guest joining us, Jon Macaskill (pronounced Muh-KAS-kill) is a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness teacher and leadership coach. During his 24-year Navy career, he served in multiple highly dynamic leadership positions, from the battlefield to the operations center and the board room. Jon's unconventional yet highly effective style of teaching leadership is fueled by his passion for helping people and organizations become the best versions of themselves. He takes what helped him excel in his professional life and heal in his personal life and now shares this through mindfulness coaching, grit and resilience training, and keynote speaking, all in the pursuit of helping others achieve their full potential.
Here are 3 key takeaways from this eye-opening conversation:
1️⃣ Processing Trauma: Jon emphasizes the significance of addressing trauma early on, rather than bottling it up. Trauma is not a disorder; it's a natural human response. Seeking professional help and utilizing tools like mindfulness and meditation can play a vital role in processing trauma and promoting mental well-being.
2️⃣ Hypervigilance & Stress: Jon sheds light on the impacts of hypermasculinity, the fear of losing identity, and the constant need to maintain a tough exterior. Hypervigilance can keep us in a perpetual fight-or-flight state, leading to burnout and difficulty in connecting emotionally. Mindfulness practices can help break through these barriers and offer tools to better handle stress, anxiety, and sadness.
3️⃣ Mindfulness and Parenting: Jon shares his journey as a father, highlighting how mindfulness has transformed his parenting approach. By being fully present and mindful, he prioritizes family time, strengthens bonds, and cherishes the limited moments he has with his children. Mindfulness enables him to better navigate the challenges of hypervigilance and create a healthy balance between protection and giving his children the space to learn and grow.
Remember, taking care of our mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. Let's break the stigma around vulnerability and build a stronger, more resilient community.

About Anson Whitmer, Ph.D.
Anson is a driven individual whose personal experiences have shaped his career in neuroscience. A tragedy struck when his uncle, who had been living with his family during a difficult period, took his own life. This event left a deep impact on Anson and propelled him to pursue a PhD in neuroscience. His goal was to comprehend why individuals like his uncle struggled to overcome their troubled childhoods, leading to depression and ultimately suicide. Anson's quest for knowledge brought him to Stanford University, where he undertook postdoctoral research alongside a renowned clinical psychologist specializing in mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, another devastating blow came when Anson's cousin from the other side of the family also took his own life. Anson realized later that his cousin had reached out to him for help, but he had been unable to respond in time. These personal experiences continue to fuel Anson's determination to understand and address the complex factors influencing mental health.

He delves into his personal journey and various experiences, including his training in trauma-informed care and child development and his view on codependency and emotional regulation. When his friends started seeking advice for their parenting struggles, Jon's detailed responses earned him the title of parenting expert. On EPISODE 65 of The Therapy4Dads Podcast, Dad, husband, and therapist Travis invites Dr. Tina Payne Bryson (@tinapaynebryson) to share important insights on disciplining children. Dr. Bryson is an author and licensed clinical social worker, and she is the founder and executive director of the Center for Connection in Southern California, a parenting educator, and clinician worldwide. In EPISODE 64 of The Therapy4Dads Podcast, we dive deep into the topic of unhealthy masculinity and its impact on men and boys. Our guest Jan Winhall, author of "Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model," shares her insights and practical tools for healing trauma and regulating the nervous system. We discuss how men have been traumatized by unhealthy societal expectations and how therapists can be the first safe person in a man's life. We also explore the importance of integrating the mind and body, using body cards to manage emotions and the groundbreaking polyvagal theory for understanding the autonomic nervous system. Tune in to learn how to rewire your brain for vulnerability, heal attachment issues, and find the "sweet spot" of calm in your body.
Jan Winhall (@janwinhall) is an experienced trauma and addiction therapist who has been working with families, men and women, children, queer people, and everyone in between for over 40 years. Her passion for helping people heal from trauma began with working with women who were incest survivors in a hospital setting. Jan realized that she didn't feel comfortable with the way that women were being pathologized, which led her to hunt for a more non-pathologizing approach. Through her work with these women, Jan discovered the practice of focusing, which is Jemlin's work in connecting with the intuitive process in the body. This led Jan to Steve Porges' work with the autonomic nervous system, which she now also incorporates into her practice. Jan's knowledge and experience in this area led her to writing her book in 2021, called Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model, which has since brought her closer to the Polyvagal Institute and Steve Porges himself. Jan's ultimate goal is to help people calm down their nervous systems and be able to heal from trauma and addiction.

I'm Travis Goodman, a licensed therapist and I make videos on holistic mental health and my heart is to equip you with the tools and skills necessary to help you live a peaceful, balanced, and fulfilled life.
EPISODE 25: It's that time of year again where the smell of gingerbread and hot chocolate fills the air and bright lights wrap houses and trees. It's also that time of year where you bust out your coats, scarves, and beanies and get nice and warm and cozy by the fire. It’s also that time of year where you make your annual trip to Aunt Remus house. Every year she quickly criticizes your shoes, your pants, your weight, your hair, kids, your partner. It doesn’t matter; out comes the criticism. Nothing is ever good enough, right enough, smart enough, tall enough, short enough, anything enough, it doesn’t matter with Aunt Remus because it never measures up. Simply put Aunt Remus just isn’t a nice person. But of course, you can’t NOT go; we don’t want to hurt her feelings or anyone else's feelings for that matter. So in this video, I am going to share 5 Tips on how to cope with toxic/difficult Family Members during the Holiday season.
