Evan
On Left of the Projector, you’ll get to revisit movies from many different eras from a leftist perspective. Episodes will include regular guests who will lend their thoughts on movies from a mutual interest in class consciousness and personal experience. Movies aren’t inherently political. However, directors and screenwriters have inherent biases and often make decisions based on their personal views. They may present characters and design plot points as a way to portray a certain aspect of society. We will unpack movies from a historical and dialectical materialist point of view.
In this episode, we explore the thematic elements of "The Fog" and "The Mist" with guests Kayt and Brandon. Kayt is cohost of Fangs for the Memories and Tendor Subject and Brandon cohosts the podcast Cars and Comrades.
Focusing on the films, we examine their atmospheres, social dynamics during crises, and the tension between individualism and community. A deep dive into "The Mist's" impactful ending reveals commentary on human nature, while we also share horror film recommendations for the season.

Frank Herbert's Dune series has long been considered an impossible series to bring to film. We saw David Lynch try and fail, but in 2021, Denis Villeneuve accomplished the unthinkable. Dune Part One, the first half of the first novel, is a stunning film that really does an excellent job bringing the story to life. With some renewed interest in Starship Troopers after some very awful X (formerly Twitter) threads, I wanted to rebroadcast this episode which gets into the heart of the matter: This movie is satire.
Starship Troopers is one of, if not the greatest, the best spoof military films of all time. Paul Verhoeven is the GOAT when it comes to satire, especially military and police related. The mastermind behind Robocop brought the novel to life in a much better way. Verhoeven used the imagery of fascism, the third reich, the United States to show what ongoing militarism looks like if we keep going in that direction.

We're back with Evan of Left of the Projector for the third (maybe second?) entry in the History in Film series. This time it's 1960's Zionist epic, Exodus. Based on the novel of the same name by Leon Uris, this film aimed to convince American Jewry to consider the State of Israel (at this point, only twelve years old) as a nation deserving their investment, sympathy, and loyalty.

Frank Herbert's Dune series has long been considered an impossible series to bring to film. We saw David Lynch try and fail, but in 2021, Denis Villeneuve accomplished the unthinkable. Dune Part One, the first half of the first novel, is a stunning film that really does an excellent job bringing the story to life. Movies about organized labor are few are far between. But Disney's Newsies is that rare exception that is still a class today. One of the few others, Norma Rae, which was released 20 years earlier, also depicts the struggles of organized labor in a more modern sense. We have seen Hollywood release a bunch of left adjacent films in recent years and Glass Onion is one of them. We should however not confuse these movies with any type of left movement in Hollywood - this is what sells. That said, this movie does have some very interesting themes if you peel back the layers of the onion (pun intended). We find some interesting metaphors, critiques of different groups of people from a liberal leaning perspective and more.

Hollywood rarely makes films about the Soviet Union, at least from their perspective (even if it's a bit ahistorical). The Death of Stalin came out 100 years to the month of the Russian Revolution, which was no accident. Despite the flaws of this film, which we discuss in full, it's a really fun "fan fiction" (as per Jolly Leftist). I had fun watching and hearing those more knowledgable about the period that I am discuss all the facts. District 9 is as pertinent as it was when it came out almost 15 years ago. Mystery Men is one of those films that you either love or hate. Or even more accurately, it's a film you've heard of or one you haven't. During the peak of Ben Stiller's acting career, he stared in There's Something About Mary and was riding high. Then Mystery Men came out which was an utter flop. Lucky for Stiller, Meet the Parents came out a year later and the rest is history.While Mystery Men is a goofy comedy film of working class superheros, it does say a lot about capitalist society, crime, poverty and lots of fart jokes. Starship Troopers is one of, if not the greatest, the best spoof military films of all time. Paul Verhoeven is the GOAT when it comes to satire, especially military and police related. The mastermind behind Robocop brought the novel to life in a much better way. Verhoeven used the imagery of fascism, the third reich, the United States to show what ongoing militarism looks like if we keep going in that direction.

The Menu was a film I was anticipating for a while and then got a flurry of friends saying I need to see this film. While I was slightly hesitant in the episode on saying I loved this film...I definitely did. This first rule of Fight Club is to tell people to listen to this episode about Fight Club. Fight Club is probably one of the most beloved cult classics of the last 20 years despite the fact that most get all the wrong messages from the film. It is an athem for alpha male dude bros, when the reality is that the film is far more nuanced. You will find men who do domesticate and take to jobs that require what previously had been deemed "feminine" roles. The movie, like the book, has a far more important message to impart: our society of over consumption and consumerism needs to to be stopped -- Capitalism cannot be the only way. Imagine a world where the only dining option is Taco Bell. In this world, there is also no violent crime. What's the catch you ask, well, a large portion of the population lives underground, the people top side are touch starved, repressed, and don't have any real ability to live a life of their own choosing. What world is this? It is that of Demolition Man. The 1993 action movie featuring Wesley Snipes, Sylvester Stallone, and Sandra Bullock was a movie that could only be made in the 90s. The plot, the "acting" and the ending are a site to be seen. That's not to say this movie still isn't a solid action movie for the era.

Forrest Gump received high acclaim when it came out in 1994 and was honored with Best Picture at the Oscars too. While the movie hits on tons of those heart strings, nostalgia, and the things that Boomers love, it is also filled to the brim with light propaganda. What makes it so successful at this is how well the movie is constructed. Except for that weird bit where he becomes a runner, it has end-to-end historical references that help you relive that time in America. The problems include the dismissal of all Black achievements and a glorification of the Vietnam War which is widely accepted as an absolute travesty.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers came out when the United States was debating and then invading Iraq over supposed WMDs and it was this climate that influenced some of the aspects of this film. In addition, Vigo Mortensen was very much opposed to the US illegal invasion of Iraq and we love him for it. Hungry Rye is back to bring into focus the geopolitical aspects happening when this film came out and how important this film really is to the trilogy. Many find this movie slow or unapproachable given that much of the "action" happens near the end at Helms Deep. The original George A Romero's Dawn of the Dead is part of his series of now six zombie films. The Night of the Living Dead was ground breaking for it's time and had far more to tell us than just being a zombie flick. Dawn of the Dead might have even more to tell us about our society of consumption and capitalism.If you go looking for information on Romero's politics, you'll mostly come up empty, but Dawn of the Dead is without a doubt a very political movie. No Country for Old Men was a departure from the Coen bros typical film, but not entirely. It still employed many of the same vehicles but it was built on Cormac McCarthy's neo-Western novel from 2005. The film went on to win Best Picture and the performances are spectacular. Wall-E stands tall as one of the best Pixar movies to date. Wall-E, the trash-building robot shows us a glimpse of humanity in the desolation that is now earth. His sheer determination and some accidental actions set in motion the human recolonization of the earth once he lands on the Axiom.
Wall-E, however, is much more than a movie for kids. It shows the real impact of climate change, over consumption, and giving too much power to mighty corporations. It's hard not to watch this film today with a bit of horror, as we see the result of humans on earth.

The 1990's were filled with vampire classics, one of which may be Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. For perhaps the first time on this show, I rewatched a movie and it didn't bring back that 90's nostalgia that I so dearly love. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt both perform well, but it's hard to fully love it knowing the type of people they are today. But I digress... Vampire lore has a long history, much of which stems from the classic novel 'Dracula.' However, the mythos goes back much further. There are many alagories and ways to interpret the vampire, but perhaps the most useful version is that of the blood-sucking capitalist. The mere idea of a person, who drains you of your blood until you are dead sounds remarkably similar to that of a Capitalist in our current system. The original Candyman film spawned numerous sequels, all of which fell flat and were not true to the original. Enter the new era of Candyman was ushered in by Director Nia DeCosta and writer Jordan Peele. The movie acts as a direct sequel to the OG Candyman film and does a great job of making it so you didn't need to see it to understand the new one. Horror films should be viewed through a leftist and marxist lense, and this film is no different. There are class, race and other issues that are glaring once you look past the gore and jump scares. While this movie may not be her best, Angelina Jolie makes her feature film debut and plays the rich white girl in a cast of mostly people too old for their roles as high school kids.
Hackers brings out a lot of interesting themes about the world around us, corporate BS and much more.
This week's episode features a new movie, yes, we do those too. The Hunt came out in 2020 right before the pandemic after a delay from 2019. The movie features so-called elite liberals literally hunting conservatives at a manor...somewhere. We are back again this week for the first bonus episode between regular interview discussions. This episode I will give some thoughts on one of the best horror movies ever made: Black Christmas.
For those who are big horror buffs, you probably know all about it. For those who aren't or just missed this 1974 gem, I'd encourage you to find it (it's free right now on many sites) and watch it.
Black Christmas was a genre-defining film that established the slasher/psychological thriller era even before the famed Halloween by John Carpenter. You'll find themes rarely found in horror movies as well as the first use of "The call is coming from inside the house" in a horror film.
This week we dive into yet another 90's film with the memorable film Pleasantville. I promise we'll do some new movies soon...
Pleasantville stars Toby Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H Macy and Joan Allen. People probably remember it best for the stark difference from black and white movie into color. The movie evokes a lot of strong symbolism, whether director Gary Ross meant it or not.
I'm joined this week by Emlee aka The Jolly Leftist on TikTok who suggested this episode for its interesting themes. While some are overused, it's still is poignant today.
Is Avatar better than Titanic? Maybe. I will cover Titanic in a future episode and we can fight about it in the comments then. But this week, we discuss James Camerson's stunning film from 2009. Cameron conceputalized this film decades ago and his vision was brought to life in one of the most visually stunning films you'll ever see.

Sergio Leone revitalized the western genre with banger after banger in the 1960s and 70s. Clint Eastwood was often his muse, though not in this film. With an incredible cast, Leone brings to the surface the dark underbelly of the "old west." As an Italian filmmaker, Leone was somewhat of an outsider in his perception of the North American western expansion. Along with that expansion was the brutal exploitation of black, brown, and indigenous people. US Government and capital interests ruled with an iron fist and the two tracks of the railway enabled the expansion.
If you're not a fan of westerns, this one will change your mind.

In 1998, Jim Carrey was in the midst of his peak comedic film era and yet he opted to join on The Truman Show, a film far from funny. At that time, we thought of Carrey as Ace Ventura or Lloyd Christmas and not as the sad sack that was Truman Burbank who, unbeknownst to him, was being broadcast to billions of people every second of the day.
I talk to Zoo about the implications of this depressing "comedy." The Truman Show is a reminder of the commercialization that was seen to this day. Everything is for sale, everything is a jammed pack full of advertisements and we may have lost some of our own identities in the process.

There have been numerous film iterations of Batman over the last 3 decades, but the new version really brings new depth to the Batman character. While there are very few superhero films that make political statements, we do get about half a movie of solid undertones. As I discuss with my guest Matt Galvatron, Batman superfan, Matt Reeves does put together a marvelous movie but does fall short when it comes to fully flesh out the political message.

Most Cohen Brothers movies are classics, while The Hudsucker Proxy may have flown under the radar and never reached that status. Written in 1985, finished in 1991, and released in 1994, the film was also written by Sam Raimi and turns out to be more pertinent today. The movie was written to depict ordinary men and how they too can become heroes. The film took us back to 1958 New York City and gives us a glimpse of corporate life and how a small-town college graduate can achieve big things.
While this doesn't stand along side The Big Lebowski or Fargo, it deserves its day in the sun.

This week I am joined by SmirkGently to discuss Mike Judge's masterpiece, Office Space. While the movie was not a big hit in theaters, it gained a cult following in the years that followed on Comedy Central. The movie brought us so many classic lines that have just become part of everyday vernacular.
When viewing the movie today, it's impossible not to see that technology has changed, but the commonalities of office work haven't. From Hawaiin Shirt Friday, to waiting for just one tiny piece of chocolate cake at Collin's birthday celebration. The monotonous aspects of office life were perfectly brought to life in this classic.

In the inaugural episode, I chat with Andy about the classic film 'The Matrix.' Released in 1999, it changed action movies forever with special effects we'd never seen before. Beyond the effects, the audience is left with the chilling knowledge that the world as we know it is not real, it is a simulation. How might we understand that in today's context of global capitalism and alternatives?
