I thought about this a lot over my vacation break. The amount of content and users on social networks now is so great that it is almost impossible to find the content and people you are actually interested in. Instead you have to find a way through the adverts and misleading click bait, the junk posts and insults.

So I ask you, is it time to pay for quality networks that do not allow any of the above to interfere with actually connecting to people and content you are interested in?

I'm not saying that the Apple Podcast app is terrible, I really want it to be great. But I have some issues with it that I've mentioned before.

But why the ratings for it are suddenly so great is because we are mostly responsible for it as podcasters. We are asking our listeners to do the wrong thing with the best of intentions.

It may sound like a great marketing spin to only have your work available in one place, but I think it's a bad idea because you make it harder to find and harder for people to share on your behalf. In this midweek minute, I have a very tough question again for you to face for yourself. But a very worthwhile exercise if you are completely honest.

Pick something you find extremely difficult to do or face. Then make two lists, one for the reasons not to do it. Another for the reasons to break through the barrier and do it.

Then, see which list is the one you really feel is the best. Be honest!

So I had to make myself do it otherwise it just makes me a hypocrite.

You should always strive to keep people feeling comfortable, transitioning big changes over time is better in my opinion, than a sudden flood of new things that users have to immediately get used to.

We live in a world with a short attention span by design. Social networks, for example, need you to scroll for them to make more money. Content makers get hurt by this because they get a few seconds of your attention at best.

I was watching a video of Harumi Tanaka, a masterful fountain pen maker on YouTube. He was saying towards the end of the video how some people hold their breath as they are turning the outside edge of the barrel of the pen to help them focus.

This got me thinking and I realized that I do the same thing at critical moments. I bet most of you do as well if you stop and observe your actions.

So how about you, what moments give you pause to hold that breath and focus on the moment?

The best camera is the one you have with you, assuming you have a good camera with you that is. A few thoughts on this idea that is commonly found on the Internet.

There are times the camera with you is a mobile device, and that is going to bite you on the you know what later if you try and use the image for certain things. So why not just carry an actual camera instead and always be covered for any eventuality.

Why getting and giving feedback is important. I do not mean just clicking that thumbs up or down, or +1 on something. I'm talking about telling someone why you are doing it, what it is you liked or what you thought was not so great.

We owe it to people to tell them what we thought of it if there is a system in place to do so.

Plus, you can only improve if you get feedback.

I'll talk about all this and more.

You are probably stuck in a building like me and so many others. Well, that does not mean we have to give up on projects. Here are 5 suggestions you can try whilst at home.

  1. Invent a project that you can do at home, for example document what it is like to be at home. Maybe set up a mini studio for photography or painting.

  2. Practice using your equipment, whatever it maybe. Learn settings or maybe play round with tools you normally avoid.

  3. Revisit old projects, I bet if you look hard enough there is something you can work on.

  4. Play around with old equipment you never use anymore, I have a few old cameras around the house that I can power up, maybe you have some old brushes or pens you no longer use and could start working with again.

  5. Just go with the flow, pick something you would normally avoid and try it. Maybe try a new skill like drawing or painting, who knows what could come from just throwing out the rule book and doing something different.

Why not support this podcast by buying me a coffee, I really would appreciate it and give you a shout out in a future episode.

We are certainly in a time that we will remember. There is so much going on around the World with COVID-19 and it is tough for everyone.

This gave me an idea of how I and so many others can channel all that concern into something to focus our attention and help us get through it.

If you are in a position to do so, document how this is affecting you, your family, your town, your country and even the World. This not only serves as a record for future generations but as a way to turn all the worry into an effort to help stay motivated during this stressful time.

In this episode, I share some thoughts and an example of how I'm trying to make the most of a difficult situation.

So many projects get abandoned or never started because people take the attitude "Someone else has already done it" and that's idiotic to be blunt. Until you do it, nobody has done it 'your way' and who's to say your take won't be the start of something big?

Oh, so a celebrity has entered your market? Great that means good news on exposure for you as well.

I get it, you just did something cool and want to tell the World, but you did that 10 minutes ago, should you wait longer for that next release? Is it too much in one go? Does everyone really want a 2 hour podcast to listen too?

Some thoughts on all those things, pace and delivery can make the difference between an on-going conversation and attention or a way to send people to sleep.

This episode was created with tools for the Mac from SetApp https://peterwitham.com/setapp

So you reached the end of your day, you finished work, maybe the kids went to bed and it's that moment when time is yours to do what ever you want with

... what now?

Well, I have a few suggestions on how you can take advantage of that time and keep those projects and what ever else you want moving forward.

Do you like silence?

For me, silence is a great way to recharge my battery and gives me the opportunity to focus. But I appreciate it's not that way for everyone. Silence in todays society is almost a weird fifth wheel.

Part 1

Every time I start a project, I believe it's the one that is going to work out and make the difference. I have to, and you should as well, why? Because if you do not believe in it at the beginning, why bother even doing it.

Part 2

Do you maintain a list of skills you want to work on? I do, I have a list of skills I want to improve and a list of skills that I want to learn. This keeps me motivated and excited to try new things.

There is no shame in using a template or preset to get a project started. Often I hear that there is some kind of stigma attached to using a pre-built solution. But often that is the fastest way to get to what really matters...making content.

To start a new project you need to remove any excuse to procrastinate, and often it seems that generating a tool or system to make the thing you want to make gets in the way. So let's start by avoiding that.

It is so important to have you're own domain name and Web site. Especially if you are thinking of building a brand or e-commerce. In this episode, I am going to give you very good reasons why you need to do this and not use a third party as you're home on the Web.

Show Notes:

  • It will always be there for as long as you keep it live.

  • You get to control how it looks and all other aspects of the site.

  • You are free to change your mind at any time and take it in another direction.

  • You are not relying on a service that might go paid or disappear at some point. For example, many of the social networks that now no longer exist.

  • You are not dependent on a third party company and their privacy rules and how they use your data.

  • Users know exactly where to find you.

  • You can use the site and domain as a jumping point to anywhere else you want to direct people.

  • You can use services to see metrics and learn from your users what is working and what is not. This is invaluable data.

  • You can gather user information via forms and/or emails and start a two way conversation.

  • If you decide to sell goods or services, you are free to implement that the way you want it to be.

  • You are not forced to display advertising or other distractions based on the desires of another company.

  • You get to provide the experience to visitors and potential customers exactly the way you want it to be.

You need to try and experience your content the say as your customers will, and for that you may have to do a little homework, but it will be worth it. By experiencing what you make the same way a customer does you can ensure that you are making the right choices and delivering what you expect not what you assume.

Note: This episode was record on the move in some really terrible weather so the quality may not be what you are used to.

Over a long time now I have noticed something, the weather greatly affects my creative mood and output. When it's damp and raining it somehow pushes me to a higher level.

Terrible storms in Texas today reaffirmed this for me, so I thought I would share some interesting observations.

If you listen to this episode on Anchor at https://anchor.fm/peter-witham you can now leave messages to share your thoughts, and I really would like hear them. Let's get a conversation going and maybe I'll share your comments on the next episode!

It gave me enough information going forward on how I can improve both quality and service. Now I can start work on my development and podcast streaming I think.

Boundaries are wonderful things

We are more likely to respect boundaries put upon us by others than those we impose on ourselves. That is assuming we put any in place to begin with. Just telling ourselves that we will know when enough is enough is not a good way to hold ourselves accountable.

Not only are boundaries a good way to measure things like project limits but they also teach you a useful skill that you can carry through every aspect of your professional career.
