I thought about this a lot over my vacation break. The amount of content and users on social networks now is so great that it is almost impossible to find the content and people you are actually interested in. Instead you have to find a way through the adverts and misleading click bait, the junk posts and insults.
So I ask you, is it time to pay for quality networks that do not allow any of the above to interfere with actually connecting to people and content you are interested in?

Recently I made my first podcast interview. I have appeared as a guest many times on different shows but this was the first time I was the interviewer. I was watching a video of Harumi Tanaka, a masterful fountain pen maker on YouTube. He was saying towards the end of the video how some people hold their breath as they are turning the outside edge of the barrel of the pen to help them focus.
This got me thinking and I realized that I do the same thing at critical moments. I bet most of you do as well if you stop and observe your actions.

The best camera is the one you have with you, assuming you have a good camera with you that is. A few thoughts on this idea that is commonly found on the Internet.
There are times the camera with you is a mobile device, and that is going to bite you on the you know what later if you try and use the image for certain things. So why not just carry an actual camera instead and always be covered for any eventuality.

You are probably stuck in a building like me and so many others. Well, that does not mean we have to give up on projects. Here are 5 suggestions you can try whilst at home.

Invent a project that you can do at home, for example document what it is like to be at home. Maybe set up a mini studio for photography or painting.

Practice using your equipment, whatever it maybe. Learn settings or maybe play round with tools you normally avoid.

Revisit old projects, I bet if you look hard enough there is something you can work on.

Play around with old equipment you never use anymore, I have a few old cameras around the house that I can power up, maybe you have some old brushes or pens you no longer use and could start working with again.

Just go with the flow, pick something you would normally avoid and try it. Maybe try a new skill like drawing or painting, who knows what could come from just throwing out the rule book and doing something different.

It is very important to capture those ideas in any form you can when you have them, even when they might be rough quick thoughts. They do not have to be perfect, but capturing them is a must.

There is no shame in using a template or preset to get a project started. Often I hear that there is some kind of stigma attached to using a pre-built solution. But often that is the fastest way to get to what really matters...making content.
To start a new project you need to remove any excuse to procrastinate, and often it seems that generating a tool or system to make the thing you want to make gets in the way. So let's start by avoiding that.

It is so important to have you're own domain name and Web site. Especially if you are thinking of building a brand or e-commerce. In this episode, I am going to give you very good reasons why you need to do this and not use a third party as you're home on the Web.

You get to control how it looks and all other aspects of the site.

You are free to change your mind at any time and take it in another direction.

You are not relying on a service that might go paid or disappear at some point. For example, many of the social networks that now no longer exist.

Users know exactly where to find you.

You can use the site and domain as a jumping point to anywhere else you want to direct people.

You can use services to see metrics and learn from your users what is working and what is not. This is invaluable data.

You can gather user information via forms and/or emails and start a two way conversation.

If you decide to sell goods or services, you are free to implement that the way you want it to be.

You are not forced to display advertising or other distractions based on the desires of another company.

You get to provide the experience to visitors and potential customers exactly the way you want it to be.

You need to try and experience your content the say as your customers will, and for that you may have to do a little homework, but it will be worth it. It can be tempting to go back and fix those older works that just don't meet our newer higher standards, but they might just be beneficial to leave as they are. Previously not so great work by comparison to your standard today is a great way to show progression and improvement, and that my friend is a good thing.

Over a long time now I have noticed something, the weather greatly affects my creative mood and output. When it's damp and raining it somehow pushes me to a higher level.

Boundaries are wonderful things
We are more likely to respect boundaries put upon us by others than those we impose on ourselves. That is assuming we put any in place to begin with. Just telling ourselves that we will know when enough is enough is not a good way to hold ourselves accountable.
Not only are boundaries a good way to measure things like project limits but they also teach you a useful skill that you can carry through every aspect of your professional career.
