I didn’t originally leave my media career with a clear plan. I left because I knew something wasn’t right at the time. What followed was a search for a business idea that took me through yoga, ceramics, and creative experiments in remote Tasmania, all of which eventually led to my podcast and business, Unemployed and Afraid.

Host Andrea Marquez unpacks how I redefined risk not as betting it all on one big idea, but as giving myself permission to experiment, try, pivot and start again. The word “journey” might get a bit overused when speaking about business, but there truly is no better word for it.

Her name is Lainie Bracher Towner, Equine Assisted Learning Coach and founder of Equine Angels, and Laine’s story is almost more of a total rebrand.

She’s gone from the glamorous world of fashion magazines, parties and corporate offices to working with horses to deliver an equine assisted life coaching program that helps disadvantaged youth develop emotional control, effective communication and body language skills.

When I spoke with Lainie, there was a lot up in the air for her, her beloved business was facing a period of challenge with the need to secure down a property to continue her amazing work, and since then the region she calls home has faced devastating flooding. Thankfully she is now resettled into a new space to continue her work.

It can be a tough gig trying new things, with a lot of unknowns, in this episode we talk about listening to the signs that you’re ready for change and going for it, no matter how many unknowns there are.

Call it algorithm bias, but in the world of social media some people seem meant to show up in your feed, today’s guest is a perfect example.

You’ll hear all about it in the episode, but in short, I connected with Kimberley Turner Eng, my guest for today’s episode, via a LinkedIn update she shared that went viral. In it, she talked about taking a break from her long career with Nike and Amazon to reset.

This makes today’s episode is a little different, as I’m chatting with Kimberly while she’s on said career sabbatical - she hasn’t started a business, or made any firm moves to retrain in a new field, she’s simply taking a break from her career to clear her head and realign with her values – which is the place I was in through early 2020.

Kimberly shares the story of how she came to this decision, how she planned for it, and what it’s been like to proudly own her status of “on a break”

My chat today is with a fabulous gent named Peter Burr, who has spent most of his career as a top Marketing Exec for major Telco’s and IT, facing three redundancies over this time (yes, 3!!)

Peter decided to re-focus his approach to his marketing career, changing how he works to support his vision for creating an amazing and highly awarded destination restaurant, Potager, in Carool northern NSW.

My guest today is Sophie Marshall, the founder of This is Incense, a brand that I’m not so low key obsessed with – but after recording this episode, I think I might be more obsessed with Sophie herself.
