When you are called to obedience, you will be challenged to be obedient in the most difficult times. God is using that time to cultivate fruit in you, if you notice this, be still and obey. We all need good friends to call us out when they see us struggling to obey. We are grateful to the Fields for walking with us and reminding us what it means to obey. You will be encouraged, challenged, and inspired.

This week, Lisa and Jeff go rogue again and hit the road! We traveled all the way to Fort Collins Colorado to interview Lisa's Sister and her husband. Eric and Cassy Reeves are a type 1 and 9 respectively. We would like to say sparks fly in this episode, but it is hard for a type 9 to allow sparks to fly...especially if it involves conflict. We had such a beautiful and insightful conversation with this awesome couple! You will want to listen and share it.

What the Bible says about our unique personalities

  1. Psalm 139:14 - Embracing Your Uniqueness
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
We are wonderfully crafted by God’s hands, each with a unique design and purpose. This verse reminds us to celebrate our individuality and recognize the intricate care God has taken in creating us. Every detail about us is intentional and purposeful. Be encouraged that you are a masterpiece in God's eyes, perfectly made for His plans. [Embrace your uniqueness]with gratitude and confidence.
  2. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 - Using Your God-Given Gifts
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”
God has given each of us unique gifts and talents. These differences are not just by chance but by God’s design to fulfill various roles in His kingdom. When we use our gifts, we reflect God’s creativity and wisdom. Take heart knowing your unique abilities are valuable and essential to God’s work. Use them to serve others and glorify Him.
  3. Jeremiah 1:5 - Your Unique Calling and Purpose
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
God has known us and set us apart for His purposes even before we were born. Our uniqueness is part of His divine plan and He has specific roles for us to play in His story. Feel encouraged that you are uniquely chosen and known by God for a special purpose. Trust in His plan for your life.
  4. Ephesians 2:10 - Uniquely Made for Good Works
"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
As God’s handiwork, we are designed with intentionality and purpose to do good works. This verse highlights that our creation was not random but purposeful, with good works prepared for us to accomplish. Rejoice in knowing you are created with a divine purpose to fulfill. Step confidently into the good works God has planned for you.
  5. 1 Peter 4:10 - Serving Others with Your Unique Abilities
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."
We are called to use our unique gifts to serve others, being faithful stewards of God’s grace. Our individuality allows us to reach and impact people in ways others cannot. Be encouraged that your unique gifts can [make a difference in the lives of others]. Serve with joy and faithfulness.
  6. Romans 12:6 - Diversity in Gifts
"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;"
Each of us is graced with different gifts that reflect God’s creative spirit. This diversity in gifts ensures that all aspects of God’s work are covered. Embrace your unique gifts and use them [confidently] in faith. Your individuality is a crucial part of God’s plan.
  7. Exodus 9:16 - The Significance of Your Unique Purpose
"But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."
God raises us up for specific purposes to display His power and proclaim His name. Our unique journeys and experiences are part of how God shows His greatness. Find comfort in knowing your life has a powerful purpose in God’s plan. You are part of something much bigger than yourself.
  8. Matthew 10:30 - God’s Attention to Detail
"And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered."
God knows every detail about us, even the number of hairs on our head. This level of care and attention shows just how precious we are to Him. Rest assured that God cares deeply about every aspect of your life. You are intimately known and loved by Him.
  9. Isaiah 64:8 - Uniquely Shaped by God
"Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand."
As clay in the Potter’s hands, we are carefully and lovingly shaped by God. Each of us is molded uniquely, reflecting [God’s creativity] and purpose. Trust that you are being molded into a unique and beautiful creation by God’s hands. Embrace the process, knowing the outcome is wonderfully made.
  10. Galatians 6:4 - Find Joy in Your Individual Path
"Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,"
We are encouraged to focus on our own actions and not compare ourselves to others. Our individual paths are unique, and comparison only distracts us from our own journey. Take pride in your individuality and the unique path God has for you. [Celebrate your progress without comparison].
  11. John 10:3 - Known by Name
"The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out."

  12. 1 Samuel 16:7 - Heart Over Appearance
"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"
God values our hearts over outward appearances. This verse encourages us to [focus on our inner character], knowing that’s what matters most to God. Be encouraged that God sees and values your heart above all else. Cultivate a heart that honors Him.

"Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
God values us greatly, knowing even the smallest details about us. This assurance of our worth helps us overcome fear and anxiety. Take courage in knowing you are incredibly valued by God. Your worth is beyond measure in His eyes.
  15. Romans 8:29 - God’s Unique Plan
"For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters."
We are predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ. This transformation is unique for each of us, reflecting God’s design. Be inspired by God’s unique plan to [shape you into the image of His Son]. Embrace the journey of transformation.
  16. 2 Timothy 1:7 - Living Fearlessly

We get in trouble when our expectations are:

Unknown-We may not be aware of the expectations we have, but we all have them. Even if we feel we do not, we have expectations about others having expectations.

Unreasonable-Sometimes we feel we would like things a certain way, but just because that is what we expect doesn't mean, it is reasonable.

Unexpressed-How can our spouse possibly know our expectations if we do not voice them.

This week, the Fields and the Carters are both arguing and it all revolves about our expectations, communication about expectations and the lies we believe about our spouse when we do not voice our expectations and our spouse falls short.

"Faith over Fear" can be one of those sayings that tends to get watered down by people with good intentions. What the Bible says about fear and how to defeat it is more than faith. We spend some time detangling Valentines and judging those of you who claim to hate it. But then we get down to a conversation about fear.

We hope to challenge you to be vulnerable first with God about what your fears are, then with your spouse. How we handle our mate's fears can greatly impact our intimacy with each other.

Thank you Amber for giving us the idea for this episode. The four of us sit down to discuss ways that we have had to purge in our lives because we did not recognize the need to keep pruning.

John 15:1 - “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit."

Philippians 3:12 - 114 "Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

The Quote from CS Lewis.

From a letter to an American woman, 31.7.62

I have a notion that, apart from actual pain, men and women are quite diversely afflicted by illness. To a woman one of the great evils about it is that she can't do things. To a man (or anyway a man like me) the great consolation is the reflection "well, anyway, no-one can now demand that I should do anything." I have often had the fancy that one stage in purgatory might be a great big kitchen in which things are always going wrong - milk boiling over, crockery getting smashed, toast burning, animals stealing. The women have to learn to sit still and mind their own business: the men have to learn to jump up and do something about it. When both sexes have mastered this exercise, they go on to the next.

A clarification written 03.09.62

[this] is simply my lifelong experience - that men are more likely to hand over to others what they ought to do themselves, and women more likely to do themselves what others wish they would leave alone. Hence both sexes must be told "mind your own business" but in two different senses.

This week, we talk about the ways our priorities get out of alignment and how that affects us.

Scripture used this week:

Pride: Puts self first Humility: Puts Spouse first

Phil. 2:3-4 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Ecclesiastes 2:4-11

The Emptiness of Possessions4 I increased my achievements. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. 5 I made gardensand parks for myself and planted every kind of fruit tree in them. 6 I constructed reservoirs for myself from which to irrigate a grove of flourishing trees. 7 I acquired male and female servants and had slaves who were born in my house. I also owned livestock—large herds and flocks—more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. 8 I also amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I gathered male and female singers for myself, and many concubines, the delights of men. 9 So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom also remained with me. 10 All that my eyes desired, I did not deny them. I did not refuse myself any pleasure, for I took pleasure in all my struggles. This was my reward for all my struggles. 11 When I considered all that I had accomplished and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be futile and a pursuit of the wind. There was nothing to be gained under the sun.

This episode reveals a lot about the things we are all learning about and how God is growing us. There are lots of things that come along as a distraction or even wrench in the works. Kids, In-laws or midlife crisis. As we enter our mid to late 40's what are we turning to to make us feel like our lives mean something? I know we are all over the map on this one, but we have all grown so much over our years of pressing into our calling and it is cool to hear in this episode.

We decided to spring board off of a comment Blake made on the last episode. What in your marriage are you viewing as something that is failing to make you happy, when really, it is designed to make you more holy?

This discussion went way into the weeds as the Fields and the Carters work through some miscommunication, understanding each other's love languages and how we still get it wrong. BUT...we are learning and these things are causing us to grow.

We hope you listen and see what really conversation and working through conflict and misunderstanding looks like.

Judges 6-7

Do you trust God when He calls you to something that seems impossible? The Fields and the Carters chose to fight a battle for their marriages when it seemed impossible. What can we learn from the story of Gideon? When a battle is won, only God can receive the glory. He will make it known that it is only Him who can receive the credit.

What do you need to lay down in obedience?

What is God calling you to? Do you believe it is really God?

What exactly does it look like to hear from God? When we remove distractions and pay attention we can hear what God is telling us and what He is asking us to. When we respond in obedience, we cannot limit the ways God wants to use us and bless us.

We will finish this discussion with powerful stories about encounters with God. We talk about the spiritual realm and what that looks like.

As always, we recognize our lack of theological training. We just read God's word and do our best to apply it to our marriages. Most importantly, we are open to hearing from God and what He is calling us to.

This week, we talk about mercy, obedience and second chances. We get on such a role about obedience and hearing from God, we decided to make this a two-part episode.

Remember, we do not claim to be theologians. These are candid conversations about what we believe we have heard from God through His Scriptures.

We will hear Bryan and Alissa's story of redemption in their marriage and how Mercy and Obedience played a part.

We will briefly breeze through the book of Jonah and reference a few other verses that talk about obedience and God's pursuit of His people.

This felt a little like a venting session about how difficult parenting can be, but turns out we have a lot to learn from the challenges our kids face too. We have to experience the refining process to really learn and change. If our motives are to just make some surface change or behavior modification, lasting change doesn't really occur.

What happens when we just try to do things on our own or our way? Sometimes God allows us to face a challenge to get us to slow down and rely on Him.

Thank you to Paul Tripp Ministries for this list of what Love is according to what Christ asks of us. We hope you will be challenged and inspired.

  1. Love is being willing to have your life complicated by the needs and struggles of your husband or wife without impatience or anger.

  2. Love is actively fighting the temptation to be critical and judgmental toward your spouse, while looking for ways to encourage and praise.

  3. Love is the daily commitment to resist the needless moments of conflict that come from pointing out and responding to minor offenses.

  4. Love is being lovingly honest and humbly approachable in times of misunderstanding, and being more committed to unity and love than you are to winning, accusing, or being right.

  5. Love is a daily commitment to admit your sin, weakness, and failure and to resist the temptation to offer an excuse or shift the blame.

  6. Love means being willing, when confronted by your spouse, to examine your heart rather than rising to your defense or shifting the focus.

  7. Love is a daily commitment to grow in love so that the love you offer to your husband or wife is increasingly selfless, mature, and patient.

  8. Love is being unwilling to do what is wrong when you have been wronged but to look for concrete and specific ways to overcome evil with good.

  9. Love is being a good student of your spouse, looking for his physical, emotional, and spiritual needs so that in some way you can remove the burden, support him as he carries it, or encourage him along the way.

  10. Love means being willing to invest the time necessary to discuss, examine, and understand the problems that you face as a couple, staying on task until the problem is removed or you have agreed upon a strategy of response.

  11. Love is always being willing to ask for forgiveness and always being committed to grant forgiveness when it is requested.

  12. Love is recognizing the high value of trust in a marriage and being faithful to your promises and true to your word.

  13. Love is speaking kindly and gently, even in moments of disagreement, refusing to attack your spouse’s character or assault his or her intelligence.

  14. Love is being unwilling to flatter, lie, manipulate, or deceive in any way in order to co-opt your spouse into giving you what you want or doing something your way. (continued on next page)

  15. Love is being unwilling to ask your spouse to be the source of your identity, meaning and purpose, or inner sense of well-being, while refusing to be the source of his or hers.

  16. Love is the willingness to have less free time, less sleep, and a busier schedule in order to be faithful to what God has called you to be and to do as a husband or a wife.

  17. Love is a commitment to say no to selfish instincts and to do everything that is within your ability to promote real unity, functional understanding, and active love in your marriage.

  18. Love is staying faithful to your commitment to treat your spouse with appreciation, respect, and grace, even in moments when he or she doesn’t seem to deserve it or is unwilling to reciprocate.

  19. Love is the willingness to make regular and costly sacrifices for the sake of your marriage without asking anything in return or using your sacrifices to place your spouse in your debt.

  20. Love is being unwilling to make any personal decision or choice that would harm your marriage, hurt your husband or wife, or weaken the bond of trust between you.

  21. Love is refusing to be self-focused or demanding but instead looking for specific ways to serve, support, and encourage, even when you are busy or tired.

  22. Love is daily admitting to yourself, your spouse, and God that you are not able to love this way without God’s protecting, providing, forgiving, rescuing, and delivering grace.

God has equipped us to battle against the evil in this world. He has given us an armor, which includes the sword of the Spirit. This is God's Word. We used our "sword" this week by using all of the following scriptures:

Ezekiel 28:12-19, Revelations 12:7-12, Revelations 12:4, 1 Peter 5:8, Daniel 10, Job, Ephesians 6:10-13, James 1:5, Matthew 6:5, James 1:2

Here is a prayer you can use to start each day putting on the Armor of God:

PRAYING THE ARMOR OF GOD: Ephesians 6: 13-18 Thank you, Father, for this armor you have given me. I pray for the desire to stand against the darkness and fight today.

BELT OF TRUTH: The belt of truth is the base that all other pieces connect to and are strengthened by. This belt is my integrity, my foundation, my center of gravity and my guide that holds my faith and everything else. Because I choose to live in His truth, no matter what the enemy throws at me, I can stand firm in Christ. Today I fight the lies against my body, my character and my desires.

BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS: Now that I have my belt of truth buc kled firmly around my waist, in humility, I attach the breastplate of righteousness. This means that I choose to have righteous thoughts, words, and actions. This protects my heart against the enemy’s arrows of temptation. I choose today to believe your truth instead of my feelings. My heart determines the course of my life, so please protect it today. (Prov 4:23)

SHOES OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE: I step into the shoes of the gospel of peace. I realize this peace is found through you alone, so I thank you and walk boldly today, knowing you are with me. I choose to be vulnerable and share the great works you have done in my life everywhere I go. Even when things are tough, I can have a peace that surpasses all understanding. (Phil 4:7)

HELMET OF SALVATION: I am secure by the covering of salvation. This is a free, precious gift from you! I am sealed and deemed holy by the blood of Jesus. So today, I put on my helmet of salvation and I reject the lies that wage war against my min d. I will fix my thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable. In Jesus’ name, I silence all voices speaking to me except the voice of Jesus. Please protect my mind f rom the things that have no place being there. (Phil 4:8)

SHIELD OF FAITH: I am powerless without you, Lord, but I can do everything through you. By your spirit, I lift up my shield of faith. With you, I am capable of extinguishing all the flaming arrows of evil. Your word says you will equip me to do your will so I’m going to step out in faith and obey. Today I fight against th e constant assault of hurt, betrayal, abandonment and discouragement. (Hebrews 13:21)

SWORD OF THE SPIRIT: I protect myself with the other pieces, but with the sword of the spirit, God’s word, I fight. The Word of God is my off ense, and it is sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates soul and spirit. By the power of my Father, I am able! I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Today I choose to believe The Word over the world. I trust in you, Lord; I say, YOU are my God. (Phil 4:13) (Psalm 31:14) God is my commander in chief who has provided me with His heavenly weapons of war. So, I stand armed and ready, knowing the battle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers and powers and authorities in this dark world, and the spiritual forces in the heavenly realms. (Eph 6:12) Father, your word says, “Do not be dismayed or discouraged, for the battle is notmine, but Yours!” (2 Chronicles 20:15) Every day, I will suit up an d put on the armor ofGod, and then let YOU fight for me.

There are times in our lives when we are tempted to shy away from relationships for various reasons. In episode 18, we challenge you to press in. The Holy Spirit is prompting you for a reason, but the enemy wants to keep you from authentic relationship for a reason. Open your eyes to those opportunities, be bold and make that phone call or shoot a text to the person or couple you feel you would like to make a connection with. This can lead to amazing things...just ask the Carters and the Fields.

We did some research...well, Alissa did because Lisa was getting grossed out. Here is what she found relating to the optic nerve and make genitals. There is no nerve directly from eyes to penis. The thalamus is a subdivision of the brain that relays sensory impulses to other parts of the body. So, the thalamus receives input from the retina, which is relayed to the brain via the optic nerve.

Matthew 18:21-22

Then Peter approached him and asked, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? As many as seven times?” “I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven.”

"To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

Lewis B. Smedes

Forgiveness is:

Giving up the right to get even

Acceptance

Forbearing

Forgiveness is not:

Letting someone off the hook.

Restoration of trust…trust is re-earned and re-built over time.

Automatic reconciliation.

Forgetting the offense.

A feeling…we can’t wait till we feel like it.

A response to an apology. We forgive because we have been forgiven. You may never get an apology.

Praying the Armor of God

Ephesians 6: 13-18

Thank you, Father, for this armor you have given me. I pray for the desire to stand against

the darkness and fight today.

Belt of Truth

The belt of truth is the base that all other pieces connect to and are strengthened by. This

belt is my integrity, my foundation, my center of gravity and my guide that holds my faith

and everything else. Because I choose to live in His truth, no matter what the enemy

throws at me, I can stand firm in Christ. Today I fight the lies against my body, my

character and my desires.

Breastplate of Righteousness

Now that I have my belt of truth buckled firmly around my waist, in humility, I attach the

breastplate of righteousness. This means that I choose to have righteous thoughts, words,

and actions. This protects my heart against the enemy’s arrows of temptation. I choose

today to believe your truth instead of my feelings. My heart determines the course of my

life, so please protect it today. (Prov 4:23)

Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

I step into the shoes of the gospel of peace. I realize this peace is found through you alone,

so I thank you and walk boldly today, knowing you are with me. I choose to be

vulnerable and share the great works you have done in my life everywhere I go. Even

when things are tough, I can have a peace that surpasses all understanding. (Phil 4:7)

Helmet of Salvation

I am secure by the covering of salvation. This is a free, precious gift from you! I am sealed

and deemed holy by the blood of Jesus. So today, I put on my helmet of salvation and I

reject the lies that wage war against my mind. I will fix my thoughts on what is true,

honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable. In Jesus’ name, I silence all voices speaking

to me except the voice of Jesus. Please protect my mind from the things that have no

place being there. (Phil 4:8)

Shield of Faith

I am powerless without you, Lord, but I can do everything through you. By your spirit, I

lift up my shield of faith. With you, I am capable of extinguishing all the flaming arrows of

evil. Your word says you will equip me to do your will so I’m going to step out in faith and

obey. Today I fight against the constant assault of hurt, betrayal, abandonment and

discouragement. (Hebrews 13:21)

Sword of the Spirit

I protect myself with the other pieces, but with the sword of the spirit, God’s word, I fight.

The Word of God is my offense, and it is sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates

soul and spirit. By the power of my Father, I am able! I can do all things through Christ

who strengthens me. Today I choose to believe The Word over the world. I trust in you,

Lord; I say, YOU are my God. (Phil 4:13) (Psalm 31:14)

God is my commander in chief who has provided me with His heavenly weapons of war.

So, I stand armed and ready, knowing the battle is not against flesh and blood but

against the rulers and powers and authorities in this dark world, and the spiritual forces in

the heavenly realms. (Eph 6:12)

Father, your word says, “Do not be dismayed or discouraged, for the battle is not yours,

but God’s!” (2 Chronicles 20:15) Every day, I will suit up and put on the armor of God, and

then let YOU fight for me.
