But as you'll hear in this episode, nothing is going to hold Claire Mitchell back from what she wants to achieve.
Claire is a woman with Down syndrome, who is ambitious and driven, with a passion for society to see her and her peers as equals.
She holds leadership positions as the Queensland representative on the Down Syndrome Advisory Network, and is also the first person with Down Syndrome to sit on the board of Down Syndrome Australia as an independent director.
In 2022, Claire was an Australian delegation member at the 15th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, at the United Nations in New York.

Leading a school is never easy, but what are the challenges you face when 100% of your students have special needs?
Murray Bowman is the principal of Pine Rivers Special School, which caters to students who have been verified as having a significant intellectual disability.
Many of the students also have a verified secondary disability area which adds to the complex nature of the learning requirements.
Every student in the school, whether from prep to year 12 require the highest level of support offered by Education Queensland, so it takes someone pretty special to lead a highly specialised unit of teachers and support staff.
We'll find out how Murray and his team of teachers, teacher aides and support staff care for the students and families of Pine Rivers Special School.

Robyn Fellowes story is one of sheer grit, smashing through the glass ceiling of the Australian Army’s special forces, and becoming the first Australian woman to wear the coveted green beret of the Australian Commandos.
Despite a childhood marred by the effects of domestic violence, Robyn’s life story is one of resilience, mental toughness, empowerment and positivity.
Throughout her military career, Robyn has always championed the cause of women, whether by supporting those who stood alongside her in the defence force, or by empowering women during overseas deployments.
One of Robyn's career highlights was as the Australian Army Gender Advisor to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

There are currently over ten thousand prisoners in the state of Queensland, with statistics showing that almost half of prisoners who are released, will return to the correctional system within twelve months.
Prison chaplains really are working at the coal face, connecting with inmates and dealing with the harsh realities of prison life.
Graham Hembrow is the coordinator of Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy, which falls under the banner of Carinity’s chaplaincy services.
Graham has had a calling to serve and witness to prisoners his whole life, and leads around 40 chaplains as they forge meaningful relationships and bring hope behind bars.

The high school formal is a rite of passage for Australian students during their final year of school. It’s a way of recognising that transition from childhood, as a celebration of 12 years of hard work, and a way to usher in a new season of life.
But going to the school formal is not as easy as it seems if you come from a family that is doing it tough financially.
Tammy Robinson has earned her nickname of the Formal Fairy Godmother, through her tireless work helping students in South East Queensland attend their school formals.
When Tammy found out that many students in her city of Logan were missing out on their school formals because they couldn't afford the cost of formal wear, she decided to do something about it.
She started Formally Ever After in 2019, both as a way to support students and families in her community, but also as a way to cope with the grief she was experiencing after losing a number of important people in her life.
Formally Ever After provides formal wear, shoes and accessories at no cost to those who need it, with all items being donated by the community.
In this episode of Chappy Chats, Tammy talks about her story, how a simple act of kindness can change someone's life, and how she's come to help almost 6000 students attend their school formal.

Sue Collier arrived in Australia in the 1960's as a teenager and quickly found her way into the world of show business.
Trained as a singer in the UK, Sue worked as a professional singer under the monikers of Toni McCann and Toni McCrae, and with her husband Royce Nicholas (The Blue Jays), formed the duo Toni & Royce, who were dubbed 'Australia's Sonny & Cher'.
Sue had a wonderful career for many decades and is now serving the community as a prison chaplain through Carinity.

Thirty five years ago, the founders of the International City Church Brisbane began meeting in an area of the city known for its vice.
Those first services saw bikies, the homeless and others on the fringes of society attend and were welcomed in to a loving, caring community.
Fast forward thirty five years and Pastor Jonathan Mok is the senior minister, overseeing a congregation made up of many nationalities, and with services translated into Mandarin, Spanish and Korean.
Jonathan is passionate about reaching different cultures with a message of hope.
He's also passionate about the life changing power of prayer, and has been involved with the interdenominational prayer event Battle Cry for some years.

You’ve probably met a few colourful characters in your life, but I can guarantee you that you’ve never met someone as colourful as Chaplain Jack Teepa.
Jack has a whole wardrobe full of colourful clothes, which he says he started wearing to brighten up the lives of residents in aged care, where he works as a chaplain with Carinity.
He reckons his bright jackets bring a smile to both residents and staff, but as you’ll hear in this episode, clothes don’t just make the man.

For over 100 years the Salvation Army has provided support to the Australian military through the Red Shield Defence Service.
Affectionally referred to as Sally-men, Salvation Army officers have been there for Aussie troops across all theatres of war in that time, with the exploits of Fighting Mac MacKenzie, who deployed to Gallipolli in World War One, going down in history as a Sallyman who never shirked hardship or danger, while keeping up the morale of the troops.

Jennifer Bennett is the school chaplain at Yeronga State School in Brisbane's inner south-west.
Chappy Jen got her start in chaplaincy just after the Brisbane floods of 2011, helping families devastated by that disaster get back on their feet. It was a scenario that played out once again with the flooding that took place earlier this year, leaving over 50 families in her school needing assistance.
Community is at the heart of why Jen became a chaplain; not only does she serve her school, but she also works as a volunteer chaplain with the RSL, leading Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services.

Trevor Battley spent much of his working life as a tradie and electrical contractor, and over the years discovered a passion for serving the community through volunteering.
In retirement, Trevor volunteers not just in his church and local community, but also serves regional communities four times a year with his caravan club.

I recently met Dylan Humphry on an SU kids holiday camp where he was volunteering as a leader.
Very early on, Dylan told me he was living with cystic fibrosis, a condition that predominantly affects the lungs but can affect other organs as well.

Stephen Bell spent much of his working life as a businessman, before retraining as a chaplain in his 60's.
He currently serves as a NightWatch Chaplain in Brisbane's entertainment precincts, as well as a disaster response chaplain through Chaplaincy Australia.

Freya Phillips is your normal, fun loving eleven year old Aussie kid. She loves swimming, skating and soccer, and outside of school those sports dominate her life.
But a couple of years ago, Freya developed pains in her legs, meaning she couldn’t run and play with her friends. That pain initially left doctors scratching their heads before she was diagnosed with a rare condition called miserable malalignment syndrome.
This is Freya's story of how hope got her through the recovery process, and how school chaplaincy was able to support Freya through that journey.

One of the most visible areas of chaplains in the community is in a school setting.
The feedback from students, staff and principals tell us that chappys are really important within a school community, but why is it that they are so loved?
Mercedes graduated from Everton Park State High School in Brisbane’s northern suburbs in 2021.
After moving to the school from a Christian school, Mercedes found that the support offered by chaplains was incredibly helpful as she adapted to a new school environment and also with her spiritual life.
Mercedes is now studying at TAFE and reflects on the chaplaincy support she received in this edition of Chappy Chats.

How do you think you’d cope working in paediatric palliative care? It’s got to be one of the hardest jobs going around and not everyone can cope with what that job throws at you.
Reverend Jenny Busch has served as a chaplain in the Queensland Children’s Hospital and the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.
She’s sat with parents as their children slip away and been there for families during their most difficult journey.
Jenny has also served as a secondary school chaplain, and worked with programs responding to family violence.

Who cares for our athletes once the crowds have gone, the lights have been switched off and they just need friend.
It's now commonplace for sports teams of all levels to have access to a chaplain, but how do you get started in sports chaplaincy?
Warren Crank was chaplain to the North Queensland Cowboys NRL (rugby league) team for five years, and has also served the Townsville Blackhawks and Norths Devils rugby league teams. Both of those teams compete in Queensland's top tier rugby league competition, The Queensland Cup.
Along the way Warren has also founded a network of pop up churches called Red Dirt Church, and written a number of books including 'Unofficial Chaplain'.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. One minute your child is happy and healthy, and then literally overnight you’ve received a cancer diagnosis and your world becomes one of hospitals, treatments and taking one day at a time.
Julie Simpson walked that road with her youngest son James after he was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 14. But although James fought and endured painful treatments and procedures, James and Julie were not to get their happy ending.
Julie has a powerful story of dealing with loss, coping with grief, and holding onto your faith while your world collapses around you.

Chappy Beck Holloway is the chaplain at Undurba State School, just north of Brisbane.
At almost 1000 students, it's one of the largest state primary schools in Queensland.
Through the innovative use of her therapy dog Mr Rees, and a specialised cooking class, Beck's work is having an impact both inside and outside of the classroom.
I spoke to Beck about her work, and how school chaplains bring their own skills and interests to help and encourage children.

When you’re six years old you should be living life without a care in the world.
I met Holly Anderson in the QLD Children’s Hospital after she had been diagnosed with leukaemia.
Despite this diagnosis and the devastating loss of friends to cancer, she still remained as bubbly as ever, as she travelled the road to recovery.
Holly and her mum Anna joined me to talk about their cancer journey, hospital life and getting to ring the remission bell.
