Published on 28 Mar 2017. My guest today, despite his relatively young age, is a leadership expert. I should know. I’ve been following his work for several years and he never ceases to amaze me with his consistent and excellent work.
His name is Paul Sohn and it’s one I believe you need to get to know.
A little over a year ago, Paul self-published a book called Quarter-Life Calling. I was actually a part of his “launch team,” helping to get the word out about the book among my followers. Paul and I even talked about him being on the show back then, but weren’t able to work it out schedule-wise. Turns out, that was for the better.
His success with self-publishing and creating buzz around the book caught the attention of a literary agent who ended up shopping the book around to traditional publishers with one eventually signing him to a deal.
Fast-forward a year and here we are. A new-and-improved version of Paul’s book (with 7,000 more words) is about to hit the bookshelves (April 4).
Even if you’re, say, like me and more like Quarter-Life times two, certainly you know someone who this book would be ideal for. For me, that’s my 22-year-old nephew.

In today’s episode, Paul and I discuss:
His thoughts on why we need to rethink how we measure success
Why he calls the American Dream a dangerous myth
The difference between a calling, job and career
…and much more!

Published on 04 Apr 2012. Welcome to Episode 32 of ProdPod, the podcast of productivity lessons in two minutes or less. I'm Ray Sidney-Smith, your productivity guide. What do MRIs, Buddhist monks and meditation have to do with each other? It turns out, your productivity. There are many studies past and ongoing [here's a recent article of one such study] that reveal that meditation has innumerable benefits for helping the mind focus, which is one of the key ways in which we can take advantage of our productive hours of the day. However you express yourself secularly or spiritually, calling it meditation, prayer, quiet time, introspection or otherwise, as long as you focus your attention calmly and steadily, you can gain the mental benefits. By the act of teaching your brain to focus, the rest of the collateral benefits in your productive life follow naturally.
I've meditated for many years and here's a quick exercise that I still practice to this day when I find it difficult to let go of my day ahead, or the day's events.
With eyes closed, sit in a relaxed, quiet space. You may need ear plugs. And, you should turn your electronic devices off and put them somewhere outside of the room. Start at a small number, say, 20. Breathe deeply through your nose into your stomach (otherwise known as "diaphragmatic breathing" or "yogic breathing"), hold for a moment, and then slowly exhale to the count of three. As you do this, keep your hands rested supine on your legs to combat restlessness and raise your chest slightly as you inhale on occasion to fix your posture. Count silently, "Twenty." Take another deep breath into your diaphragm and repeat as you count down to one. Increase the number of your breaths as you find more time to meditate or reduce the number and tuck several sessions throughout the day.
There are many meditative practices, so while this exercise may not fit you forever, use it while you find one that does. Your productivity will be glad you did.

Published on 02 May 2018. In Episode 104, we welcome the legendary, Ken Fisher. Meb starts with a quick word of congratulations to Ken, as his firm just passed $100B in assets under management. The guys then discuss Ken’s interest in fishing with a bow and arrow, which eventually morphs into a conversation about a millionaire who allegedly hid a million dollars somewhere in the Rockies, leaving clues to treasure-hunters searching for it. The guys then jump into investing, discussing Ken’s early days in launching Fisher Investments. They touch upon one of Ken’s early claims to fame, championing the price-to-sales ratio. This leads to a conversation about being factor agnostic, which includes some interesting takeaways from Ken on capital pricing. Soon, Meb brings up Ken’s book, Debunkery, and asks about one of its points: namely, the misbelief by so many investors that bonds are safer than stocks. What follows is a great commentary by Ken about short-term volatility risk versus opportunity cost risk. When you look at longer, rolling time periods, it becomes clear that stocks are far less risky than bonds. And in the long term, stocks are less risky than cash. Ken tells us that in his business, it’s his job to focus his clients on the longer-term. Next, the conversation takes an interesting turn, touching upon the explosion of tech science, and how it’s affecting our lives, as well as the capital markets. It bleeds into Meb suggesting that older investors tend to become more conservative or pessimistic, and so they tilt away from equities, and whether that’s a behavioral challenge Ken has to address with his clients. Ken gives us his thoughts, concluding with that idea that people need to be relatively comfortable in capital markets with things that are generally uncomfortable. The conversation then veers into politics and the effects on the market. Ken tell us that when you look at presidents and market history, our system gives presidents much less power to affect markets than most people believe. Meb jumps to Twitter questions, bringing up one that wonders how to position yourself in the end of a bull market. Ken gives us a fascinating answer which I’m going to make you listen to in order to hear, but it tends to focus on large cap and quality. There’s way more in this great episode: capital preservation and growth… volatility (a great quote from Ken “volatility is your friend, it’s not your enemy, if you use it correctly”)… the media’s impact on investor perception… the Fed and sovereign balance sheets… the senate bill trying to eliminate the ability of public companies buying back their own stock in the marketplace… housing (and the need to account for the full housing costs when calculating returns)… and of course, Ken’s most memorable trade. What are the details? Find out in Episode 104.

Published on 28 Jun 2016. Humility, Leadership, Values, Business, UPS Summary What IS humility? When we speak of someone being humble, do we picture them looking, being, or acting in a certain way? Is “being humble” the same as being weak, or having a lack of self-confidence? Or, is there a false premise at work there? We’ll discuss that in our Thought of the Day. And, later, in today’s interview, he began as a UPS driver and worked his way up to President of the company. Ron Wallace will share Leadership Lessons from a UPS Driver, which just happens to be the name of his new book. That and more on today’s show. Bob's Thought of the Day People generally agree that humility is one of the most worthy character traits a person can possess. However, in modern western thought, humility is a concept that is often misunderstood. Imagine that the humblest man in the world is knocking at your door. As you go to greet him, what do you imagine he would look like? Would he be a meek character, staring at his shoes? If he even spoke, would it be a whisper? Would he be afraid to look into your eyes? This is not humility, that’s self-loathing, or at best, just really shy. Many years ago I co-authored a book called GOSSIP: Ten Pathways to Eliminate It From Your Life and Transform Your Soul with Lori Palatnik. As part of the book, we looked at humility from an ancient Jewish perspective, which teaches that Moses was the humblest man who ever lived. (Please know, this is not a slight to YOUR religious tradition. I’m just using mine as an example.) But how could Moses be called humble since he stood up to Pharaoh? Moses spoke firmly with confidence and said, “Let G-d’s people go!” He also led the Jewish people through forty years in the desert and then to victories in war. Moses was no meek and mild man. So why is he referred to as the epitome of humility? It’s because humility doesn’t come from thinking, “I’m nothing.” Rather, real humility comes from knowing, “I’m something--but I know that G-d is the source of all my talents, skills, and success.” There are many reasons you might have success: hard work, persistence, doing what others won’t do, and other reasons. So take pleasure in your success, but don’t take pride. This is the difference between humility and arrogance. Arrogance says, “It’s all about me. I did it alone and didn’t need anyone’s help.” Humility says, “I took responsibility for the things I could, but also had a great deal of help along the way.” It’s hard to be humble when you think you are the sole source of your success. But it’s easy to be humble when you realize that your success is the result of a lot more than JUST you. Perhaps humility can best be summed up in the words of Christian Theologian and novelist, C.S. Lewis, who wrote, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself … less.” Interview with Ron Wallace Leadership is about having a values-based culture. Many companies espouse values but don’t live them. UPS is a very team-driven culture and uses simple principles in a structure that everyone can understand. It always comes back to the people. UPS doesn’t have heroes and superstars; the company is built on ordinary people. Humble leaders accomplish the most. They must delegate and trust their people. Once a person is trained, they are given valuable equipment and resources to use in their responsibilities. UPS wants the company’s managers to think like owners. Once you have the best people around you, let them do their job. UPS doesn’t practice the principle, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” If it’s near-perfect, take another look at it and see how it can be improved. UPS very seldom uses titles; they work on a first-name basis. Ron shares a story of turning around Canada’s struggling UPS

Josh Luber is a “sneakerhead,” a collector of rare or limited sneakers. In 2016, Luber connected with Quicken Loans founder (and Cleveland Cavs owner) Dan Gilbert, who was independently putting his own team together to create a “stock market of things” — essentially, an online platform that would establish a true market value for pretty much anything that someone might want to buy. The two joined forces to create StockX, with sneakers as their first market. Less than two years later the company has grown from six employees to more than 200.
Prior to StockX, Luber founded Campless, which has been described as the “Kelley Blue Book for sneakers” while working as an IBM consultant. A “sneakerhead data” company, Campless tracks the secondary market for sneaker sales, a $6 billion global industry. The company has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, London Financial Times and CNN Money.

Since Read to Lead began back in mid-2013, Michael Hyatt has been on my short list of people to seek out. If you’ve ever read my About Page, you know his is among the names I’ve included as having influenced my personal growth and development over the years.
He’s even responsible for helping me name the show, though he didn’t know it at the time. You see, it was Michael who I first heard say, “Leaders read and readers lead,” and “Leaders are readers.”
When I was trying to decide what to call this podcast I’d conceived, I remembered back to those quotes and quickly realized the show’s name was hidden in there somewhere.
Today, Michael is here to talk about a subject I believe he’s better-suited to speak on that just about anyone I know. That subject is goal setting.
Michael’s new book, out today, is called Your Best Year Ever: A 5-Step Plan for Achieving Your Most Important Goals. In a word, it’s incredible!

In this episode, I propose a three-phase approach to assessing our digital clutter…an initial step to understanding that just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there and isn't affecting our personal productivity.===In Episode 43, I talked about digital clutter, and the reality that we are compounding digital information about ourselves on our computers, laptops, mobile devices and the Web each and every day. So, what should we do about this digital clutter (some of which we don't even have control)? In this episode, I propose a three-phase approach to assessing our digital clutter…an initial step to understanding that just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there and isn't affecting our productivity.I. Assess where you currently have data. (storage and likely majority of it is reference)First, you have digital information hanging out on several devices if you start to think about it For example, whatever device you're listening to this podcast, which may be your computer, laptop, mobile tablet, or smartphone, you have stored information about yourself. This includes passwords, profiles or personal metadata and files. Think about where you interact daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. Visit your most often browsed websites, smartphone apps and electronics. Write them all down (or the ones with the most important information about you). You may want to write down next to them what information is stored and available to you.II. Assess where you currently create data. (working memory type items)Next, we need to assess where you currently create data. This may have begun in the first step as you realized that the places where you access information about you. However, you may have different applications at work and home that you regularly create data (think text documents, photos, video, and audio/music files). Don't stop there, though. If you volunteer, have a hobby, or work with analog data (vinyl records, microfiche, photo negatives and more), you may want to consider this part of your digital information. Also, don't leave out places that are temporary holding places for information, perhaps your desktop or in work-in-progress folders that may not be on backup drives or cloud storage accounts.II. Assess where others are currently creating data for you. (inboxes)Finally, applications, websites, financial institutions and more are collecting or collaterally making more and more information about you every day. This isn't to frighten you over privacy issues, but empower you to take control of that data, know where it is, and use it to your advantage should you desire. Review all the digital tools in your life and see whether or not they are creating information about you. If they are, take note of them and note if you can easily export or back up the data. With your new current digital inventory, you will now have the knowledge to start purging, organizing and harnessing the power of your digital data. In future episodes, I will talk about some strategies to reduce digital clutter.

For the rest of us, If you’re not embarrassed by your first product release, you’ve released it too late. Imperfect is perfect. Why? Because your assumptions about what people want are never exactly right. Most entrepreneurs create great products through a tight feedback loop with real customers using a real product. So don’t fear imperfections; they won’t make or break your company. What will make or break you is speed. And no one knows this better than Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. He shares the origin story of his famous mantra, “move fast and break things” and how this ethos applied as Facebook evolved from student project to tech giant.

This is true not just in economics, politics, and tech, but also in business relationships (and life), too.
And speaking of such relationships, how does the partnership between Ben and Marc work, more than two decades later, how has it changed through different types of organizations -- and is there anything startup co-founders (and other colleagues) can take away from it? Where do they find the creative inspiration, information, and influences for new ideas? And then, more broadly, how do they think about tech change... including jobs, automation, AI in general?
This episode of the a16z Podcast covers these questions and much more. It's based on a fireside chat that took place at our annual a16z Summit event in November 2017 (which brings together large companies, finance investors, academics, and startups to talk all things innovation), and is moderated by author Steven B. Johnson -- who has written numerous magazine articles, 11 books so far (including Where Good Ideas Come From), and also hosted the PBS series “How We Got to Now”. Incidentally, those are the de facto themes for this conversation, which arcs from past to present to future -- taking us from blinking cursors to dashboards to screens and beyond.

Powerful Quotes From This Episode:
It’s not what you believe when things are going well. It’s what you truly believe when things are really going wrong. Negative thoughts are nails. Work is meant to be a spiritual experience, not a chore. Caring is how you stand out. Our purpose is greater than our challenges. Are you a pretender or a contender? If you lose it all, start over. Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will.

Published on 22 Aug 2018. Episode 118 has a radio show format. In this one, we cover numerous Tweets of the Week from Meb, as well as some write-in questions. We start by discussing articles Meb posted in his Tweets of the Week. These include a piece by Jason Zweig about how your broker might be making 10-times more money off your cash balance than you could make on it. Then there’s discussion of valuations – a chart by Leuthold shows how one measure of US market valuation has matched its 2000 level, and another has doubled it. At the same time, Longboard released a chart referencing a Goldman market outlook that claims “in 99% of the time at current valuation levels, equity returns have been single digit or negative”. We talk about US valuations and when “selling” might trump buy-and-hold. Then we jump to foreign valuations. GMO believes emerging markets are the biggest opportunity relative to other assets in the past 20+ years. Meb clarifies what this really means. Then there’s discussion of home country geographic sector bias, whether the VC market is in a bubble (Meb tells us about some bad behavior he’s beginning to see in the space), and how the American savings rate is pretty grim. We then get into listener Q&A. Some that you’ll hear Meb address include: Are momentum funds just camouflaging another factor? For instance, if Value became the “in” factor, wouldn’t Momentum pick it up, so Momentum would then just look like a Value fund? Assuming the U.S. economy does not enter a recession in the near future, the Shiller PE’s 10-year earnings average will soon consist of all economic boom and no bust as the depressed earnings of 2008 and 2009 roll out of its calculation. How useful is a CAPE that only includes a period of profit expansion? Regarding your global value strategy, have you ever tested the strategy using relative CAPE ratios versus absolute to determine country allocations in order to avoid countries with structurally low CAPE ratios? I've never heard of a 401k plan offering ETF options. Is there a reason logistically, legally, etc. that prevents 401k plans from offering ETF options? How do I structure my portfolio for a 4% yield, after tax? I like your shareholder yield strategy, but if I get capital returned through buybacks and share appreciation, how do I get monthly income without selling shares and triggering taxes? I just don't see how I can implement a monthly income plan with this strategy. All this and more in Episode 118.

Published on 12 Jan 2017. Poverty is a hard place to be. Many of us, perhaps most of us, as we started out in life, lived for years one paycheck away from poverty, with no savings. Yet people do rise out of poverty each day.
According to one my interviewees, poverty is big business. Apparently the various levels of government spend over 900 billion dollars every year, to pay for the food, housing, medical care, and other expenses for the poor. Yet the number of poor is not declining. In 2003 there were 23 million on food stamps and in 2012 there were 46 million on food stamps.
Yet immigrant entrepreneurs, most who experienced harsh conditions and poverty, are able to create not just success for themselves, but a pathway, a model for others to follow.
Despite language skills, a lack of connections, a lack of credit, or capital, they do break through.
So, how do immigrant entrepreneurs break through, how do they rise from zero to hero.
The one thing you always hear about, and I talk about it a lot is that they work hard, and work long hours. Gary Vaynerchuk who invited me to his headquarters in New York city twice, for interviews out-works everyone.
But what is the work they are doing. Often it is learning. How is Gary Vaynerchuk, who’s family came from the poorest European country of Belarus, able to teach so much about social media to his clients at Vaynermedia. He learned it. How is he able to create such riveting presentations? He studied pubic speaking.
How did Elon Musk learn about space rockets? He studied.
When Elon first came to Canada from South Africa he got the highest paying job he could find which was cleaning boilers at a lumber mill. Elon said: "You have to put on this hazmat suit and then shimmy through this little tunnel that you can barely fit in," Musk said. "Then, you have a shovel and you take the sand and goop and another residue, which is still steaming hot, and you have to shovel it through the same hole you came through. There is no escape. Someone else on the other side has to shovel it into a wheelbarrow. If you stay in there for more than thirty minutes, you get too hot and die."
So how do immigrant entrepreneurs learn
They ask important questions. They learn from other cultures. They read books. They pay attention to their experiences.
Do you have a big question that drives you?
All the time working, Musk thought that the most difficult thing was to be able to come up with the right questions. The questions that would drive him to study, driven him to learn, drive him to work harder than anyone. And drive him to succeed.
They learn from different cultures
Being from a different country and a different culture makes them more equipped with people’s kills than natives. They use those different cultures to their advantage. Instead of giving up because they do not know the native language, they use their knowledge from different other cultures and languages they have been exposed to while they were growing up to their advantage. However, it doesn’t end here. They learn the native language and use it to enhance their communication skills which allows them to deal with people from different cultures, ethnicities, and countries with more fluency. Moises Annicchiarico from Teachlr was a French national who was exposed to Italian and Venezuelan culture and languages while growing up and this helped him with his work a lot.
They learn from books
This is the reason they do not hesitate to read books and lots of them. It helps make up for the street knowledge they lack in the foreign land and makes them understand people and cultures better. Take the example of AJ Rassamni, born in Lebanon, now a serial entrepreneur who came to America at a younger age and worked days and nights to educate himself. He ended up acquiring the very company he worke...

Watson might have the most difficult task of any founder in America: Convincing people who don’t know -- or even believe -- in God to change their minds and join his church. Reporter Eric Mennel tells the story of this young church plant in a new multi-part series from StartUp. Listen now to the first episode. Little did I know that our lunch together would turn into an ongoing discussion that would lead to learning more about his amazing life, business, and book, a conversation that would eventually lead me to invite him to sit in the guest chair.
Seth will be the first to admit he’s made mistakes. He holds nothing back as many of them are front and center inside his book.
But he’s also been a super successful businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He even helped one company grow to nearly 60 million dollars in revenue before selling it.
He now consults companies all over the US, helping leaders learn the lessons he’s gleaned over the years, many of them the hard way. At the center of it all is GRATITUDE, he says.
In fact, his book called is called Ambition: Leading with Gratitude. I think you’re going to love it.

Published on 22 May 2018. I came across this week’s guest thanks to the overlap of three passions of mine: data informed investing, value creation, and basketball. Sam Hinkie worked for more than a decade in the NBA with the Houston Rockets, and then most recently as the President and GM of the Philadelphia 76ers. He helped launch basketball's analytics movement when he joined the Houston Rockets in 2005, and is known for unique trade structuring and a keen focus on acquiring undervalued players. Today, he is also an investor and advisor to a limited number of young companies in which he feels his experience can improve outcomes. At one point in our conversation, Sam mentions that he tracked success via future financial outcomes, so I did some research and found many interesting stats about the 76ers surrounding Sam’s tenure. When he took over the franchise, it was 24th in ESPN’s franchise rankings, and today it is 4th. This is the result of an impressive crop of young talent—players like All-Star Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons—which resulted in large part from unconventional decisions Sam and his team made. While I’m sure these estimates are imperfect, Forbes estimated the 76ers value at around $418M when Sam took over and $1.2B a few months ago. NBA teams in general have grown in value, so a lot of that appreciation is obviously “beta,” but given that the 76ers had the top percentage growth number more recently of any team, some of it is “alpha,” too. While we can’t parse the exact amount, it seems his unique approach to building a team clearly created some large amount of current franchise equity value. And it looks like the dividends from those decisions will compound for many years to come. While basketball was where Sam plied his talents in the past, his approach is more elemental. It is about finding great people, using data, and structuring decisions that create the possibility of huge returns, be they financial or otherwise. I don’t know what Sam will do next, be it investing in companies, running one, or taking over another team, but I know it will be fun to watch. Please enjoy this unique episode with Sam Hinkie. Published on 02 Mar 2017. At his very core, Matthew Kimberley is a salesman. Whether it's something he was born with, or a trait he picked up while growing up, Kimberley understands the art of the sale. Starting at the young age of 13, Kimberley took to the street as a young street performer. Juggling his way into his first few dollars, and finding within himself that perfect combination of charm, drive, and ambition that make up the best salespeople. Fast forward to his 20s, Kimberley had built himself an highly lucrative company earning a cool 7-figures a year, and yet, he was unhappy. He just didn't believe in what he was doing, and couldn't find the passion to keep on going. Taking a step back as a founder, he went back to what he knew best: selling. “I realized what I liked to do is sell and teach people how to sell. So what I did was become a self-employed sales trainer, and I haven’t looked back since.” To Kimberley, there is no other skill that is as important as knowing how to sell. “Here’s why sales are important. When you can sell, you don’t need any other skills. When you can sell, you don’t need to be a creator. When you can sell, you don’t need to be a manager. When you can sell, you don’t need to be a writer, you don’t need to be a speaker, you don’t need to be a talker, you don’t have to have a business idea. You don’t have to be a particularly good executor. You don’t have to be good at doing anything, other than asking, persuading, convincing,” Kimberley says. Today, Kimberley has honed his skills to the point of being one of the go-to gurus when it comes to the art of selling. He's taught hundreds of people and businesses how to not only grow, but double and even triple their profit margins by teaching them his practical system on how to sell hard, and sell fast. In this week's episode you will learn: Kimberley's 16 principles of professional persuasion The best place to learn and hone your skills as a salesperson Why learning how to sell is the most important skill for an entrepreneur How to follow your passion while maximizing your profits The importance of having a mentor and where to find one & much more!

Why do so many industrial and B2B companies fail with email marketing? In my opinion, it’s because they do not understand the proper role of email in the B2B marketing mix.
All too often, companies make the mistake of treating email as a prospecting tool — sending unsolicited emails to people they don’t know, about products that are of no interest to them. In other words, they are spammers. Another shortcoming occurs when companies use broadcast email only as a sales tool — blasting offers and promotions to customers, often in a non-targeted way. While this may produce a few sales hits here and there, it’s not the best way to build relationships with customers. To be truly successful with email marketing, think of email as a nurturing tool — a tool for growing and strengthening existing relationships with customers and prospects who have reached out to you. One of the best ways to nurture relationships with email is by producing an educational email newsletter. Email marketing with a monthly e-newsletter offers you an opportunity to build an ongoing, interactive dialogue with your B2B customers and prospects in a measurable, cost-effective way. Not only can an e-newsletter demonstrate value to your customers, but also it can change your customers’ perception of your business.
By sending timely articles that solve current business problems, you show your customers that you understand them and their needs. This repeatedly reinforces their importance to you and builds their trust in your company. To ensure your email newsletter is a successful business-building tool, I recommend you leverage the following five best practices.
The key to effective email marketing lies in a notion known as “permission marketing.” Your email newsletter should build goodwill with your customers, not annoy them. Therefore, you should obtain permission from your customers and prospects before adding them to your email marketing mailing list. Make sure you have an obvious email signup form on your every page of your Website.
Also, any time you speak with a customer or prospect, let them know about the value they will get from your email newsletter and ask permission to add them to your list.
Your email newsletter is not for you – it’s for your customers. You need to focus less on your company and more on the issues and ideas your customers are interested in. I like articles that focus on “how to” tips, best practices and actionable strategies. To help get you started, the following are examples of customer-focused email newsletter content:
Problems and solutions — Identify common problems your customers face and provide ideas on how to solve them.
Lists and tips — Provide actionable lists and tips with titles that begin like “Seven Steps to…” or “The Top Five Ways to…”
Technological developments — Inform your customers on how they can take advantage of recent technological developments to be more effective.
Industry news and trends — Write about new developments in your industry that your customers can take advantage of.
Case studies — Write case studies of how others have improved their operations. Make sure to include actionable details your customers can put to work to produce results.
Make sure your articles are short and scannable. The best email newsletter

She is the founder and CEO of the Botsford Financial Group, which has nearly $1 billion in assets under management. She has appeared on Barron’s list of the Top 100 Women Financial Advisors and Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors multiple times. And she’s also an author who just released her second book, “Seven Figure Firm.” But maybe more impressive than Erin’s resume is the hardship she had to overcome to get where she is today. Erin was only 11 when her father died of a heart attack. The small life insurance policy he left behind made life very hard for Erin, her mother, and her five siblings. A car accident in her teenage years and a bad investment with a stockbroker in her early 20s put further strain on Erin’s family life and finances. These experiences taught Erin the value of comprehensive financial planning and asset protection, lessons she continues to impart to her clients. On today’s show, Erin discusses her compelling story, the personal and financial lessons she took away from her adversities, and how she built her own seven figure firm from scratch.

He was rejected on his first attempt to becoming a Hack Reactor graduate and went on to become a founder of Telegraph Academy. Most importantly, he found a love for teaching and is an educator that has completely changed the career trajectories for hundreds of students. Although he never graduated from college, he always knew that he was going to be a teacher. He grew up in a single family home where his mom raised him to become the man who he is today.
Key Points: 1. When you’re learning a new skill, it’s good to have resources (see below), but try to find someone to double check if you’re doing the steps “correctly”
Bootcamps need to be more accessible and there are resources like Telegraph Prep and Climb that are working to democratize this form of education
You’re always going to find another bug (another hill to climb, a new thing to conquer) so don’t be afraid of that. Take risks.
Mentorship comes through various channels. If someone invests time into helping you, the best thing that you can do is succeed.
SHOW NOTES (FOCUS ON THE STEPPING STONES): [1:12] – Albrey grew up in Berkeley, CA in a single family home with his mother and his aunt. He had no idea of what a startup was.
[3:15] Albrey’s mother got diagnosed with Cancer during his sophomore year and he took a couple of years off after he graduated high school (never graduated college)
[5:32] Beginner Resources – What resources did you use to learn how to code? First, a mentor. Then, he started with The Odin Project and Learn Ruby the Hard Way
[6:35] What was your motivation to learning how to code?
[10:47] What led you to choose Hack Reactor instead of all the other bootcamps?
[11:52] How did you do with Hack Reactor’s Interview Process?
[15:10] Don’t let money stop you from acquiring a new skill – How did you pay for your tuition ($18,000)? When he passed his interview and got accepted into Hack Reactor he needed to figure out how to pay tuition. He had no more money and used a crowdfunding platform called GoFundMe to raise $18,000 in 30 days
[18:19] Tell us more about the Bootcamp Model as a new model for education
[19:06] What makes Telegraph Academy different from all of the other Bootcamps?
[21:40] Take a Bootcamp Preparation Program if you are starting from scratch and need someone to guide you
[22:22] What financing packages are available at Telegraph Academy?
[24:58] What are some of the outcomes for Telegraph Academy?
[26:17] What do the demographics look like at Telegraph Academy?
[29:00] How did you put this all together? He is a big advocate of taking the road less traveled.
[30:40] What do you have planned for the future? Thoughts on education in general?
[33:37] The Lightning Round 1. How would you get back to this point in your career if you were dropped into a new city with only $100? (assuming your food and shelter is taken care of)
Albrey: Become a Lyft or Uber Driver to get a car (here’s the Uber option), make money, learn about your city, and meet people
Albrey: Always Be Closing by Glengarry Glen Ross
Albrey: The best resource that you can have is a mentor

Published on 03 Nov 2017. Step 1. Make Your Habit Tiny
These are the smallest behaviors that matter. A tiny habit has to be:
A behavior you do at least once a day.
Takes you less than 30 seconds to do.
Requires little effort.
Is relevant to the full behavior.
If you don’t make your behavior tiny, to begin with, you will almost certainly fail to create a new daily habit.
For example, if you start out running one hour each day, you won’t create a habit of exercise.
But if you commit to putting on your running shoes, you are, as Leo Babauta would comment, “making it so easy, you can’t say no”. [4]
Later – perhaps months later – you can expand on your habit. But when you do, the larger behaviour will be easier. Why? Because the more you do something, the easier it becomes.
Consider all of your existing habits. They are all easy to do because you’ve practiced them for thousands of hours. Soon, your new habit will be no different.
Step 2. Do Your Tiny Habit Immediately after an Existing Behaviour
The next step is to identify an existing habit. This is going to be the cue that triggers your new behavior.
Ask yourself: “What behavior do I always do, regardless of how I feel?”
This can include waking up, showering, going to the bathroom and brushing your teeth, to name a few.
You need to know what your tiny behavior comes “after”. For example: “After I brush my teeth, I’m going to floss one tooth”.
Step 3. Celebrate Small Wins
The final step is to celebrate doing your new habit. You may find this approach weird, but it works, because the ability to self-reinforce good behavibehaviore key to rapid habit formation.
You can speed up the process of habit formation by experiencing positive emotions about your tiny habit the moment you remember to do your tiny habit sequence and after you do it.
When I build a new habit, I physically rehearse the sequence a few times, each time declaring victory. This gets your brain wired to remember it.
For example, my newest tiny habit is doing two press-ups after I’ve meditated. I sit down to meditate (cue), then I get in the position to do a push-up (routine) and finally, I celebrate my tiny success by patting myself on the back (reward). I repeat this sequence a few times until I’ve got it down pat.
There are multiple ways you can celebrate tiny successes. You can do a physical movement like a thumbs up. Say a word or phrase like “Awesome!” internally or out loud. Or move your face to look happy like smiling in the mirror. Whatever you do, make it personal to you.
Conclusion
Every day, just do your tiny behaviour immediately after the existing behaviour you’ve chosen and remember to celebrate. Here, your brain and body is learning a sequence. “After I X, I do Y and I feel Z”. For example, “After I meditate, I do two push-ups and I feel awesome!”
Note, that in this step, you are learning to put a new behaviour into your routine. You are not learning the behaviour itself.
Let me explain. Suppose you want to floss daily. You already know how to do it. But what you don’t know is how to do it regularly. You haven’t mastered putting flossing into your routine as an automatic action – yet. But tiny habits will help you do that.
The more you train this new routine, the more the new behaviour will automatise and become the new normal.
Learn how to implement tiny habits in your daily routine and soon, others will marvel at the apparent ease you became a master yourself—a master of habit.

1 - Confusing a Tactic with a Strategy
Many companies' marketing isn't working because they focus on a tactic without an overarching strategy.
Marketing is complex and requires the deployment of multiple tactics in concert towards a strategic goal. A tactic that works today is unlikely to continue to work over the long run without an understanding of how that tactic fits into the marketing ecosystem to achieve a desired result.
2 - Not Being Consistent
Marketing is about consistency.
A consistent look and feel to your materials, the tone of your brand language and the cadence that you produce and publish content is the only way to achieve good results.
If you hire a stellar agency to create lead generation assets but don't update your brand (e.g. website, logo, product materials) or overall message you are setting yourself up for failure.
Your marketing establishes the initial impression your customer has of your company and you must carry that brand promise through the experience of delivering your product or service.
3 - Not Addressing Your Customer's True Motivation
You have likely heard this before, but very few companies get it right: Your customer does not buy what you specifically sell.
Your higher value proposition is found in understanding the very basic need your company addresses for your customer:
· Do you help them sleep better at night?
· Will your product or service get them a promotion or raise at work?
· Do you give them more free time, make their life easier or address a fundamental problem?
You are close to your business and likely need an outsider perspective to get this right. I find company owners' focus too much on "what" they do and they don't go deep enough with customers to find out "why" customers truly buy.

How much can you discern each company's "big picture" strategy out of the slew of new products, press releases, and announcements that flood the floor? How do you sort the wheat from the chaff?
And beyond the event of CES itself, Evans and Sinofsky analyze the experimentation we're beginning to see in connected consumer electronics for the home. When it comes to the smart home, it seems as though more is better -- more devices, more connectivity, and a single network to rule them all -- but that isn't the case. How (and when) will these devices and appliances -- some of which you only buy new every 10-20 years -- all connect into one system, and what will that platform look like? Which devices will we actually need to be "smart", and what will be today's equivalent of the electric carving knife? Where will new kinds of UI come in; when will a simple GO button be the better option? All this and more in this episode.

Ask yourself: “What would make this a great work day? At the end of the day, what would you have liked to have changed in the world that would have made it worth showing up?”
Part of embracing the mindset of mono-tasking is being being careful about our time. It’s about understanding that you want to do things that matter. If you’re finding that you want to do others things than what you are doing, it may be that what you are doing isn’t important to you.

Now, however -- driven by globalization, environmental factors, and other considerations -- the way we move, taste, and make our food is moving forward too.
From countering the limits of seasonality and global transport to re-thinking our species’ dependence on meat to optimizing nutrition to distilling the essence of taste, this discussion with Bryan Crowley, President of Soylent; Ooshma Garg, founder and CEO of Gobble; David Lee, COO and CFO of Impossible Foods ; and James Rogers, cofounder and CEO of Apeel Sciences -- and moderated by a16z Partner Kim Milosevich -- is all about the future of food... including how we define what “food”really is.

Many of the large RIAs you read about got there because they acquired firms or they were part of a banking, accounting, or law firm that fed them a large number of clients.
Today's guest, Scott Hanson of Hanson McClain, built the firm with his partner Pat McClain the old-fashioned way--one client at a time.
Using gorilla-marketing tactics, a radio show, and smart marketing, these guys built a $2 billion RIA with about 4,000 clients and an average account size of $500,000. Similar to Edelman Financial Services, Scott and Pat built a hugely successful RIA with relatively modest size clients.
I've known Scott for more than 20 years and in today's show, we take a chronological look at what he systematically did to build a top RIA from scratch and the strategies he's now using to keep the machine humming.

The complete sequencing of the human genome is one of the most powerful examples of technology and science in action: We've gone from needing $3 billion and over 13 years to read a single human genome to today, to where we can do that same amount of work for about $1,000 in roughly 2 days -- and the price will only continue to drop. But beyond pricing, what does understanding the gene -- and moving from the sequencing layer to the applications layer -- mean to us; what new questions arise now that we can sequence DNA quickly, reliably, and cheaply?
This conversation -- with co-founder and CEO of Jungla Carlos Araya and co-founder and CEO of Freenome Gabe Otte, moderated by a16z General Partner Jorge Conde (based on a discussion that took place at a16z’s annual Summit in November 2017) -- takes a step back and considers all these questions. Every time a human genome sequence is completed, there are on the order of 3,000,000 new variants identified. So how do we think about interpreting all that data? Actionability? And how do we derive meaning from all this, for applications in the clinical space?

Published on 28 Aug 2016. Bitcoin quickly made its way from a whitepaper to a production network, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. But its scripting/ programming language was initially, intentionally, limited for a few reasons, which meant that building new apps on bitcoin wasn't always easy.
Enter ethereum in 2014 -- a public blockchain platform that moved away from the "Swiss-army knife" approach to a more general protocol approach. This would in turn allow endless (and entirely new) use cases to be built on top of the blockchain, whether smart contracts or "app coins" that allow decentralized crowdfunding and decentralized business models. The results, at first glance, may seem just like a new way of financing a company. But it actually goes much deeper than that: They're really software protocols that are almost replacing centralized companies or what those companies would do. The possibilities are endless...
In this episode of the a16z Podcast, Ethereum inventor and co-creator Vitalik Buterin joins Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of Coinbase (an a16z portfolio company) in conversation with Chris Dixon. The conversation covers everything from the politics of open source (and value of network effects even when those networks split) to the challenges of mainstreaming and scaling tech. And what happens next?

The injury will probably set Farmer, who moved to 25-4-1, with 5 KOs, back probably four months. Farmer, who extended his winning streak to 18-straight fights, tore his biceps tendon in the second round. His goal is to have surgery this coming week to repair it and look toward the future.
“There was pain there every time I threw the right hook,” said Farmer, a southpaw. “I’ll take this as a learning experience. This doesn’t stop anything. I’m still good. I did everything with one hand for nine rounds. (Reyes) better have given me good work. I was fighting with one hand.”
Farmer won easily by scores of 98-94, 97-93 and 96-94 on the judge’s scorecards.
Reyes (19-8, 5 KOs) was a game opponent. He kept coming at Farmer, and there were a few times when he connected. But for the most part, Farmer was in control from start to finish.
On the undercard, budding star Branden Pizarro (5-0, 2 KOs) won a four-round lightweight decision over Chris Gutierrez (0-3).
“It wasn’t difficult at all,” Pizarro said. “(Gutierrez) didn’t want to fight. When I touched him with my right in the first round, he didn’t know what to do. He tried to get in my mind. He tried talking to me. He cursed at me. I just laughed at him.”

Published on 11 Nov 2015. Blockchain without bitcoin? It's a debate as old as the cryptocurrency itself (which, to be honest, isn't that old). Given that bitcoin is not just a digital bearer instrument/token but is a network, a distributed ledger, a protocol, the question of separating blockchain from bitcoin isn't a moot one. Especially when you think of it analogously to voice over IP, but for financial services.
So what is the financial services industry doing with this "money over IP"? Clearly many large business players are paying attention and trying to get ahead of disruption, by asking themselves exactly what their bitcoin/blockchain strategy is. Adam Ludwin shares what's happening here from his perspective as founder of Chain, an enterprise blockchain platform that partners with financial institutions to help them apply the technology to their markets.
In this episode of the a16z Podcast, Ludwin covers what it's like merging the cultures of finance and tech; what's driving the recent bitcoin prices; why he believes in blockchain beyond bitcoin; whether there can be such a thing as private or permissioned blockchains; definitions of newer concepts like 'colored coins' and 'sidechains'; and more. Oh and what are the most interesting native apps, too.

And in fact, argues NYU Stern professor and researcher Arun Sundararajan, it may even reduce the income distribution gap between the haves and have-nots in a way that previous shifts -- like the Industrial Revolution and traditional 20th century institutions -- never did. How?
Because it's a new model for (crowd-based) capitalism -- one where we're increasing the segment of the population that owns the means of production. Or... have we just shifted value from traditional institutions to the platforms instead? Well, let's see what the data tells us. In this episode of the a16z Podcast, Sundararajan (who is also affiliated with NYU's Center for Urban Science+Progress and at NYU's Center for Data Science) shares the latest findings, economics research, and more from his new book on The Sharing Economy: The End of Employment and the Rise of Crowd-Based Capitalism.
We cover the challenges of capturing this shift in GDP (as well as the challenges of GDP and measuring tech progress in general); the challenges of creating a new funding model for the "social safety net of the 21st century workforce"; the challenges of "data darwinism", reputation, and ratings; and finally, how and just who should regulate the sharing economy?

From the opening of Union Square Cafe in 1985 through Shake Shack’s IPO in 2014 and beyond, Meyer’s restaurants have shaken up the industry’s norms. New York’s fine dining establishment didn’t really focus on customer service and restaurants generally didn’t offer their staff benefits before Meyer arrived on the scene.
Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group continued to push boundaries of American dining by eliminating tipping from the Michelin-starred The Modern in late 2015, with plans to extend it to all 13 of its restaurants over time. And starting in 2017, the firm will offer paid parental leave to its full-time restaurant workers, extending a benefits package rarely seen in the industry that has long-included health insurance, life insurance and a matching 401(k) plan.
Meyer’s personal background makes him an unlikely revolutionary but it’s clear he’s become one of the most important American restaurateurs of the past 30 years because of a relentless focus on the dining experience for everyone in the restaurant, from customers to employees to suppliers and everyone in between.

They were a critical part of the larger buy-Apple innovation narrative. So what happens now when those wires -- an emblematic and enduring image -- are no longer visible, as is the case with the removal of the traditional headphone jack in iPhone 7?
It's part of a broader story, both about how product narratives are shared/told and about how innovation happens: "amazingly", subtly, and sometimes, invisibly. Some innovations, like preventing "battery anxiety" or building a platform ecosystem or even laying the tracks for a train that hasn't arrived yet ("ear computers" or "audible computing"? VR/AR? car?) take time. And a direction we may not be able to anticipate from the outside looking in. ...Or so argue the a16zers on this episode of the a16z Podcast featuring in-house analyst Benedict Evans and board partner Steven Sinofsky with Kyle Russell.

Who has the advantage in artificial intelligence — big companies, startups, or academia? Perhaps all three, especially as they work together when it comes to fields like this. One thing is clear though: A.I. and deep learning is where it’s at. And that’s why this year’s newly anointed Andreessen Horowitz Distinguished Visiting Professor of Computer Science is Fei-Fei Li [who publishes under Li Fei-Fei], associate professor at Stanford University. Bridging entrepreneurs across academia and industry, we began the a16z Professor-in-Residence program just a couple years ago (most recently with Dan Boneh and beginning with Vijay Pande).
Li is the Director of the Stanford Vision Lab, which focuses on connecting computer vision and human vision; is the Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL), which was founded in the early 1960s; and directs the new SAIL-Toyota Center for AI Research, which brings together researchers in visual computing, machine learning, robotics, human-computer interactions, intelligent systems, decision making, natural language processing, dynamic modeling, and design to develop “human-centered artificial intelligence” for intelligent vehicles. Li also co-created ImageNet, which forms the basis of the Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC) that continually demonstrates drastic advances in machine vision accuracy.
So why now for A.I.? Is deep learning “it”… or what comes next? And what happens as A.I. moves from what Li calls its “in vitro phase” to its “in vivo phase”? Beyond ethical considerations — or celebrating only “geekiness” and “nerdiness” — Li argues we need to inject a stronger humanistic thinking element to design and develop algorithms and A.I. that can co-habitate with people and in social (including crowded) spaces. All this and more on this episode of the a16z Podcast.

London-based investor Eileen Burbidge joins a16z's Alex Rampell to pick apart fintech in this segment of the podcast recorded on our U.K. road trip. Everything from the term (please make it go away), to the particular barriers and opportunities facing entrepreneurs looking to create what really amounts to better banks.

Byrne started Overstock.com in 1999, and the online retailer has been through a lot of change in the intervening years. At the outset, Byrne didn’t want Overstock to be a technology company trying to get retail right, he wanted to be a retail company that was amplified by technology. Looking back, he says, he had the emphasis wrong -- it should have been on technology.
Byrne has been focused on the technology side of things ever since, pushing Overstock further into the cloud, as well as becoming the first major online merchant to accept Bitcoin. Byrne joins this segment of the a16z Podcast to discuss the state of online retail, value investing in tech, and why he believes Bitcoin and the crypto revolution is bigger than the Internet.

It's almost a native property of technology and especially software businesses, which is why network effects matter. "It was endemic to these technologies that they wanted to become connected and once connected, they become networks and once networks, they become network effects. Other products like cars or toasters or houses or whatever, aren't natively connected physically or through information sharing," observes James Currier.
But not all network effects are equal -- not only can they be strong or weak, there are many different types depending on the business. Currier, who is the co-founder and managing partner of an accelerator (NFX Guild) that advises and runs a runs a program for all kinds of early-stage companies with network effects, shares their ever-evolving taxonomy for thinking about different types of network effects in this episode of the a16z podcast.
These labels matter. It's not just words, but language that aids understanding -- and the corresponding growth playbook -- that can help build businesses with network effects, especially given the specific challenges they face. And finally, why did some companies with network effects take off but others didn't?

More on that, and a round-up of the rest of the mess here. Uber grew about 10 percent last quarter and is now working with a former competitor in Russia. Published on 06 Oct 2017. Head of the largest bioengineering lab in the world, former chairman of the FDA and one of the few recipients of the National Medals of Science and of Technology and Innovation, Bob Langer's work has spanned multiple fields and settings and has been applied across numerous fields, from pharmaceutical to chemical, biotechnology to medical device companies. What does it mean to move across disciplines like this, from science to engineering, both in the lab and into the field?
In this conversation with general partner and head of the a16z bio fund Vijay Pande (with Hanne Tidnam), Langer and Pande share the challenges and opportunities as people move across different disciplines, as well as the changing mindsets for innovation as applied to biotech: first principles, "rational" biology, do no harm, and others.
At the heart of it all is "the interface of engineering and materials" in biology and healthcare innovation. Especially as, thanks to tech, biology shifts from empirical study to engineering -- not just in startups but in academia too. Yet does that make the work too "translational"? And what of regulation? The guests on this episode explore all of these themes, and more.

But where are we now in the A.I. evolution? What players do we think will lead, if not win, the current race? And how should we think about issues such as ethics and automation of jobs without descending into obvious extremes? All this and more, including a surprise easter egg in Ex Machina shared by Shanahan, whose work influenced the movie.

We’ve already talked about why bitcoin matters. But as the set of cryptocurrencies — and networks and “tokens” enabled by the underlying blockchain — grow (Ethereum being one of the fastest-growing ones), where do we go from here? How do we tease apart the signal from the noise, given all the buzz and critiques out there?
In this episode of the a16z Podcast, general partner Chris Dixon and Fred Ehrsam (former Goldman Sachs trader and a co-founder of Coinbase) break down the fundamentals of it all — from incentives, developer communities, and protocols, to new models of governance and the tradeoffs between centralized and decentralized systems (including central planning vs. letting a thousand experiments bloom). And then, given all the hype out there right now around crypto tokens and “ICOs”, how do we tell the difference between what’s promising/legitimate vs. a red flag? How could we value tokens? And what does it mean for incumbents when all the value that was created in the previous paradigm is being commoditized by the new one, and that value creation now has to happen at some new layer?
At the end of the day, the key word through it all is incentives. And it’s a testament to the power of getting incentive structures right that someone pseudonymously dropping a 9-page whitepaper onto the internet led to a $70 billion cryptocurrency, a whole ecosystem of companies and users, and the largest supercomputer network in the world. Then again… isn’t that how innovation happens?

Published on 19 Apr 2016. So... about those bots. Bots bots bots. Bots!
In this episode of the botcast, a16z partners Benedict Evans and Connie Chan -- along with Chris Messina, longtime advocate of the open web and more -- pull apart various threads related to the topic of bots, mobile, and beyond: the (evolution?) from web to apps to messaging to bots; chat as an interface; “conversational commerce”; and so on. They also discuss why framing messaging through the lens of WeChat both reveals useful things (what works/ might not work) and not-so-useful things (such as seeking the “WeChat of the West”).
More importantly, how can we keep bots, and what they represent, in perspective -- beyond the fad? Especially when it comes to considering innovation on the 'web' vs. 'mobile' (remember the mobile browser!) and when it comes to removing friction (vs. adding limited interaction). What contexts (like customer service) are most useful for thinking about bots? And how can we even know, given it’s early days yet and we haven’t moved much beyond the command-line interface...
Finally, as computing moves outside the classic work-centric paradigm to room- and urban-scale, how do we think about integrating online and offline, ubiquitous and “diffuse” computing through bots?
