Todays episode is the conclusion for Domestic Violence Awareness month, where I will be talking about the abuse I experienced in my recent relationship. I felt like it would provide me relief to put this out there because holding all this in has been tearing me apart and a lot of things in this episode I discuss, I haven’t told anyone. This abuse in this relationship is something I’m still processing, and I can’t help but feel I have to prove it was abuse because I was told in the relationship that I was over exaggerating. It was hard for me to realize that I was in an abusive relationship because I didn’t think I would ever be that person. There are a lot of different types of domestic abuse and I hope this episode raises awareness for the types that aren’t talked about as much. Please excuse the background noise from my puppy Gizmo. I was asked one day why I feel like I always have to be strong and don’t like to be seen as weak. After digging deep, I found that being strong was something that was passed down to me as a black woman. And although I am thankful for it, I can see how always being strong has hindered me. To day we talk about the strong black woman trope and the history behind it.
