The Down about Down Podcast at the 2024 Corner Stone Fest, Sunflower Cottage, Annacloy, County Down
On Saturday 10th August Chris popped along to the 3rd annual Corner Stone Fest, held in the beautiful surroundings at Sunflower Cottage, Annacloy, County Down.
Those who attended were treated to ten musical acts on stage from 12 noon through to 9pm. This was event that not only showcased local talent but raised much needed funds for the local LCCL Charity based in Downpatrick. The charity provides much needed services to help people overcome their mental issues, social isolation and addiction by offering a warm and welcoming environment for everyone of any age and background.
The sun shone brightly on Saturday, and the sunflowers in the adjacent field were beginning to show their faces! A nice touch to this well organised family orientated event.
Ten musical acts took to the stage across the day and entertained those who attended this year’s festival. Each of the singers and musicians had given their time entirely free of charge.
Conal Montgomery, the organiser of the event, told Chris “I’m totally blown away by the turnout and by the musicians. There’s a peace about this place and everybody’s chilled.”
The idea for a Corner Stone Festival was formulated after Conal had a chat with the late Nigel Blair on Belfast 89FM. “It was Nigel who said to me on my first radio interview with him, he asked me what would I like to do in the future to get the word out. I said I would like to play a festival. He lent over the table and said - Just go and run your own son.” The seed was sown. Conal takes pride in the fact that he can give those in the local music scene a platform to hear their music, when opportunities have been limited for them in the past.
Chris chats to well-known TV and radio broadcaster, Robin Elliott who popped along to lend his support. Local Killyleagh artist, Duxy Leahy, was also lending his support in both manual labour and artistic talent. He has donated two unique paintings, which will be put up for raffle soon, with all proceed going to LCCL. The paintings feature two well-known lighthouses – Fastnet and St. John’s, and they have been painted onto two offcuts from the stage at the festival.
Also included in the chats with Chris are Ted Ellison, Zac Mac, Short Circuit, Rikki Jordan, Nicky Brown and Barry Shields.
The complete bill included Conal Montgomery & Co., First Ted on the Moon, Every March, Short Circuit, Rikki Jordan band, Take it Easy, Charlie Hanlon, The Thing is, Zac Mac and Black Dog Moon.
Conal is hoping that the Corner Stone festival will go from strength to strength in the years ahead. He told Chris, “Hopefully we can make this grow and give them (LCCL) more every year and make more and more people aware of that hub that is on our doorstep, because you don’t know when you’re going to need it.
Eva Rowan, singer and guitarist from “The Thing Is,” also spoke to Chris about how the idea for the Sunflower Cottage and the subsequent Sunflower Cottage Fest came about. The area is owned by her family. There are five weekends set aside when the public can visit and “explore winding paths” in the sunflower field together with some live music from local artists. The event is in support of Cancer Fund for Children and Chest Heart and Stroke.

From Goal to Goal – The Down about Down Podcast with Kaitlyn Morrison. Dundonald’s International Ice-Hockey, Inline and Ball-Hockey player.
In this podcast Chris speaks to 21-year-old Kaitlyn Morrison from Dundonald about her career and successes both on and off the rink.
Kaitlyn was introduced to the ice rink at the tender age of four by her dad Mark Morrison, who was one of Belfast’s local sporting legends with the Belfast Giants.
Kaitlyn talks about her early career with the Junior Belfast Giants who had teams regularly playing in the Scottish League. She was fortunate to be selected for Team Scotland Under 15’s and within a few years had played games with Solway Sharks Under 16 girls at the age of 13 and she was also selected for Great Britain Under 16’s. This was a first for a female ice-hockey player from Northern Ireland.
Whilst playing for the Scottish Conference Team in a tournament at Sheffield in 2017, Kaitlyn was spotted by a representative of the Ontario Hockey Academy which led to a scholarship and placement at the academic-athletic developmental hockey training school in Canada. She told Chris “It is an amazing opportunity for anyone who gets the chance.” She made the Under 18 Great Britain Women’s team and played in the World Championships held in Dumfries where she attained a bronze medal. Kaitlyn returned to Northern Ireland in 2019 and played with the Junior Belfast Giants Under 20 team and Belfast Giants Scottish National League team.
Kaitlyn continued to pursue her studies and attained her A-Levels which secured her a place on a Sport and Exercise Science degree course at the University of Ulster. She will be starting her final year in September despite a busy schedule on both national and international rinks during this next season.
Kaitlyn scored her first international ice-hockey goal for GB Under 18 team in November 2019 at a four-nation tournament held at Dumfries, Scotland. She also represented Great Britain at the 2023 FISU World University games held in Lake Placid. In July 2023, Kaitlyn travelled to Belgium with the senior Inline Hockey Ireland women’s team to play at the European Championship. It was during this event that she made history, scoring a goal which gave her and the team their first international goal.
Kaitlyn signed for Whitley Bay Beacons, a women’s ice-hockey team, at the beginning of the 2023 season. This ensured she was playing ice-hockey on a regular basis at the highest level in the UK and at the end of the season Kaitlyn picked up the team’s ‘Best Defence Award.’ Inline Hockey Ireland recently awarded her with ‘Female Player of the Year Award 2024.’
Kaitlyn talks to Chris about her up and coming attendance at the trials in August for the Senior GB Women’s Ice-Hockey team and her selection in April to represent Team Ireland Senior Women Inline at the forthcoming World Skate Games this September in Italy.

“On the record” - Conal Montgomery, Black Dog Moon and The Corner Stone Fest 2024 on the Down about Down Podcast with Chris Scott
The latest Down about Down Podcast features Killyleagh’s very own talented singer/songwriter Conal Montgomery.
Chris talks to Conal about his rock group – Black Dog Moon who are due to launch their debut album on Friday 19th July 2024 at The Pavilion Bar, Ormeau Road, Belfast. Support acts include Philip McCarroll, John Devlin and the Revolvers and Arc Dakota.
Conal dreamt of forming his own rock group which would eventually record their own material. That dream has now come true and the guys are now taking the local rock scene by storm. In Conal’s own words, “There’s a tornado going on and it’s blowing us in the right direction.”
Conal talks to Chris about how the group first formed. Black Dog Moon consists of Conal Montgomery, Stephen Glackin, Daniel Martin, Nicky Brown and Dylan Kelly.
The new album consists of nine pieces of original material which is available not only on streaming platforms and CD, but on vinyl! Why name a debut album using the group’s name? Well Conal talks about that and a lot more in this podcast.
Conal explains the background to some of the new material. There is everything from heavy rock to a celtic bluesy rock number titled River Maiden. This song was penned by Conal after a memorable experience in Dublin whilst attending a Who concert in June 2015. Conal had accidentally fallen into the River Liffey. “I fell in between the pontoon and a wall off a ladder. I had a couple of bangs before I hit the water. I was in the water and I remember coming to…. I was underwater and I was looking up and I could see a light.” Thankfully a friend pulled him out before a tragedy unfolded. Conal goes on to explain that this gave him the idea for the song which encapsulates a mermaid rescuing him and bringing him to the surface. There are three titles of Who songs in the chorus.
Recently one of the group’s videos featuring the song “Rainy Night in Belfast” appeared on Ulster Television’s UTV Life programme.
In part two of the podcast Chris talks to Conal about his third annual Corner Stone Fest. This year it will be held at Sunflower Cottage, Loughinisland Road, Annacloy, County Down. It will feature ten acts with a lot of local talent including Every March, First Ted on The Moon, Short Circuit, Rikki Jordan Band, Take it Easy, Charlie Hanlon, The Thing Is, Zac Mac and Black Dog Moon. This unique music festival runs from 12noon to 9pm. Tickets, priced £30, are now on sale and money raised will be donated to local charity LCCL Pop Up Art, based in Downpatrick. This charity supports those affected by mental health, addiction and isolation. The Corner Stone Fest starts the sunflower season at the Sunflower Cottage during which a series of Sunflower Sessions will commence. Monies raised from these sessions will be donated to Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke and Cancer Fund for Children.

“Back to the drawing board” - Portaferry Artist, Rebecca Dorrian, on The Down about Down Podcast with Chris Scott
The latest Down about Down Podcast features Portaferry artist, Rebecca Dorrian who has returned to the art scene after 32 years.
Rebecca, on her Instagram and Facebook sites “Rebecca Dorrian Art” describes herself as a self-taught portrait and seascape artist. Chris, who first noticed her works of art on social media, invited her to appear on the podcast, which has now in excess of 23,000 downloads.
Rebecca, originally from Moy in County Tyrone, talks to Chris about her early influences with art, including memories of her grandfather, a sign painter, encouraging her to draw at an early age.
She did excel at art at school and eventually went to England to do a foundation in art for a year. Life would eventually take a different direction for Rebecca, and the brushes and paints were put aside. In her day job she works as a Dementia Navigator with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. The painting started when she was off work with covid several years ago. This was to be the first time in 32 years when she had last visited the canvas. “It was a ping moment for me. I forgot how this made me feel,” she told Chris. That was January 2022, and she hasn’t looked back.
“Painting is a release for me and it is my therapy,” she explained. “I paint at the weekends when I finish work and I don’t think about anything else.” Up until two years ago Rebecca had never painted a landscape or seascape.
The beautiful scenery around the Portaferry area cannot be ignored, and Rebecca now regularly paints scenes from that part of County Down and beyond.
“Window to Paradise”, one of her favourites, is used as a backdrop to her Facebook page, and was the result of a sunset scene she photographed from the Lough Shore area of Portaferry.
Rebecca has been commissioned for portraits and she has recently sold one of her landscape paintings at her first outdoor stall at Art on the Rails in Holywood. To her surprise she has also just been approached by an art gallery. “This is honestly unreal for me. If someone had suggested a year ago that I’d be approached by a gallery I’d have laughed at them!” she recently posted on her social media.

Music to Your Ears – The Down About Down Podcast with Down Community Choir
Community singing has always been an enjoyable experience in the Newcastle area. Chris relates the story of “Singing Sally” from the area, who appeared in a Newry Courthouse in April 1866 for disturbing worshippers at a local chapel with her singing!!
In this podcast, 158 years later, Chris makes his way to Newcastle, County Down and visits Mourne Community Choir whilst they are in a practice session at Newcastle Community Cinema.
Chris has a chat with Frances, Mary, Marie, Justine, Nick and Síle, all members of the choir.
The Mourne Community Choir were formed a number of years ago and have gone from strength to strength with a membership of around 50 members presently. The membership includes both young and old from across the Mourne District, stretching from Killyleagh to Kilkeel.
People from all backgrounds getting together with one common bond – they all love to sing!
The choir, under the guidance of Careen Starkey, are currently practising for their latest gig on 11th May, 2024 organised by the Lions Club.
The choir are also raising money presently through a raffle which assist in expense payments and they will be also giving a donation to The Well in Kilkeel, a community wellness hub that provides a range of services to support mental health.
Long term choir member Frances states, “This is quite aligned to our own choir, in that it is all about our mental health. People in this choir maybe have nobody living near them. They could be isolated and they come here on a Monday and let the hair down and really enjoy each other’s company.”
For anyone who is thinking about joining and isn’t sure, Marie, who joined the choir a year ago, gives a few words of encouragement. “Come and join. You go home feeling completely different. You feel more relaxed and in better form. It is just enjoyable.”
You don’t even have to read music to join! “If you can sing and hold a tune” you are more than welcome to go along to a practice session and give it a go.
The choir meet each Monday evening, between 7 – 9pm at the Newcastle Community Cinema, located at St. Mary’s Hall, Main Street, Newcastle, County Down.

Chilling out with Killyleagh Community Music Group
The Sir Hans Sloane Centre, located at 23 High Street, Killyleagh, is the setting once again for the Killyleagh Community Music Group. Professional musicians from Killyleagh, Neil Foster and Paddy Anderson, are the project facilitators for the six weekly sessions, held on a Tuesday night at 6pm.
The funding for the project has been provided by the Community Relations Council.
Chris visited the group on week two of the weekly sessions and spoke to Neil, Paddy, participants and parents about their experiences to date.
One of those parents present, Helena, was asked by Chris about her view of the evening session. “It was really engaging. Arthur seemed to have a really good time and got to play a vast variety of instruments that we wouldn’t get to play anywhere else. We had a really good time and everybody was really friendly.”
Acoustic and electric guitars, African drums, tambourines, keyboard, harp and a variety of percussion instruments were available to try out throughout the evening, in the form of a “jamming” session. The formality of music lessons is not on the agenda here.
“There is no sense of wrong notes here,” Neil explained. “You leave that space, take off the pressure, and give everyone time.”
Neil, a professional musician and composer, is also a trained music therapist. He understands the need to explore music freely and build confidence in a non-pressurised environment. “This is a different space to interact with your child and other mums, dads and other kids. I think it really takes pressure off different corners of life.”
Paddy, an accomplished professional flamenco guitarist, teacher and composer, has found that the group is a positive experience for him. “This is brilliant for me because it is a beautiful way of looking at music and what music is.” He believes both Neal and himself have a similar philosophy and that music is there to enjoy, promote wellbeing and expression. “The goal is to see a smile on the face of a child that is communicating with music. Their face lights up,” Paddy told Chris.
One of the participants added, “I used to find music lessons quite stressful, but this is more relaxed. It really encourages you to learn more when you really enjoyed it.”
Neil and Paddy encourages anyone who has an interest in joining the group to call into the Sir Hans Sloane Centre to call in, have a look and have a go! Week three of the six week course was held on Tuesday 21st November.

Clearing the clutter with the Declutterbird, Catherine Hamilton Cooper.
Crossgar lady, Catherine Hamilton Cooper, talks to Chris Scott on the Down about Down Podcast about her business “Declutterbird.”
Catherine is a professional declutterer and organiser and is clearly passionate about her business. This is a new concept to Northern Ireland and there is certainly a need for this service. Catherine explains, “Our lives are getting busier, our possessions are becoming more and more and we are accumulating so many more things. We are buying much more online. All of these things are coming into our house and we need to make sure we manage that.”
When the clutter grows, the problem starts and that is when Catherine can be called on for assistance.
Catherine, a member of APDO, the UK’s membership association for decluttering and organising professionals, talks to Chris about her background and the reasons why she decided to start her own business.
Catherine is well aware of the problems that clutter can cause in the home and how it can negatively affect people’s lives. She explains how she provides a realistic and friendly service and takes time to understand her client and their difficulties. “They will start to see a weight being lifted off their shoulders and can see a light at the end of the clutter tunnel,” she added.
Catherine discusses some of her techniques and tips, which she uses in her business. Earlier this year, in April, she was a highly commended winner of the Mighty Women Brunch Award and in September she was a finalist in the Northern Ireland Social Media Awards. Currently the Declutterbird facebook site has a following of over 16000 followers. Catherine has a private Facebook group with 2300 members where they can ask questions, seek advice and share ideas online. Catherine believes that there is a positivity in helping each other. “It is amazing the members who have made astonishing progress in their home just from the group alone.”
Catherine also mentions some of her plans for the future, including the launch of the Declutterbird membership on Facebook in 2024. This will include monthly training and accountability sessions. Recently she has published a book titles “Decluttering DIY – Home Decluttering Planner.” This is a comprehensive guide to decluttering, based on Catherine’s trademarked signature decluttering system, “The Cleared System.”

Taking a gander at "A Wee Dander" painting exhibition by Killyleagh artist - Duxy Leahy (October 2023)
In this episode of the Down about Down Podcast, Chris is in conversation with talented Killyleagh artist, Darren 'Duxy' Leahy who has his latest works of arts displayed at the prestigious Saint Patrick Centre, located at 53A Market Street, Downpatrick.
Duxy has named his latest exhibition - "A Wee Dander" and he describes the display as "Places I'm going and things I have seen. Walks I took part in and places I've been."
The paintings on display portray a number of local scenes, both from the countryside and seasides. You will instantly recognise many local places of interest including Downpatrick Cathedral, Saul Church and Struell Wells. You cannot fail to notice an unnamed figure out for a stroll in some of the paintings. Duxy refers to him as "the dandering man." There may well be a likeness to the artist, but he refuses to be drawn on this! Some time ago it was suggested to Duxy that he should put a figure into the paintings, but he admits that he struggled with figure painting at that time. " When you are teaching people to do art, and the mindfulness art classes that I do, you tell people to step out of their comfort zone. That is how you learn. I wasn't doing it myself," he told Chris. After a rethink, it was time to overcome that struggle, and the dandering man appeared on the canvas.
Despite having a number of exhibitions under his belt, Duxy still finds the experience a little nerve wrecking. "It's a little bit nerve wrecking, but an honour to have paintings hanging in the galleries where a lot of great artists have displayed their works."
Duxy believes that a little bit of self doubt is grounding. He has spoken to Chris about this on a number of occasions in previous podcasts. Earlier in his career, he had always dreamt of having an exhibition but he felt that his paintings were not up to standard. "I thought my paintings weren't good enough and I wasn't worth it. There was a time when things in my life had slipped very badly and I had reached my lowest point." Duxy sought help for his severe depression and anxiety and he managed to change his life around, continuing his journey in a new direction.
In this podcast, Duxy shares some valuable words of wisdom with the listeners. "If you can change one thing in your life, change it. It will lead to other thins changing."
The beauty of our surrounding County Down countryside is captured perfectly by the brushstrokes of one of her talented sons.

In this podcast Chris chats to Andrea Murtagh, a mother of three, from Killinchy, County Down, Northern Ireland.
Andrea started a series of sessions, on Sunday 13th August 2023, of Meditation and Journaling at Ballygowan Village Hall, County Down.
The aim of her Meditation and Journaling Circle is for individuals to find their peace, their people and their purpose.
Andrea, a certified mediation teacher and life coach, talks to Chris about how she got started with meditation and journaling. Andrea struggled with the first nine months of motherhood and she found it to be a difficult time. She tried to find ways to make life easier during her struggles.
Andrea is also a volunteer with The Parent Rooms, a charity specifically set up to assist parents who navigate the challenges of mental health. Andrea participated in their peer support training.
Later, she attended a meditation teacher training course to further her learning, and very quickly realised that it was not only beneficial to herself, but she had the idea that she could bring these ideas and concepts to others.

The Down about Down Podcast with local textile artist, designer and teacher, Emma Whitehead from The Top Floor Art Gallery and Open Studios based at 92 Main Street, Saintfield, Northern Ireland.
Chris chats to Strangford resident, Emma Whitehead about her textile artwork. She is described as a textile artist "who uses traditional and innovative embroidery techniques to create three dimensional artworks."
Emma also teaches and works with textile groups. Repurposing, reusing and recycling in art projects are very much central to Emma's work.
Remember playing with your grandmother's button box all those years ago? A visit to Emma's studio will bring back lots of memories from yesteryear. Emma reveals in this podcast how her interest in her work started.
Emma is currently working on another project with Linen Biennale based at R-Space Gallery in Lisburn, to create Northern Ireland's largest linen table cloth in Northern Ireland. Emma and a team of stitchers and crafters are working with donations of linen from the public to create a unique "work of art."
You can witness Emma at work on this project on Saturday 9th September at the R-Space Gallery, 32 Castle Street, Lisburn between 11am and 5pm on the first floor "Stitching Room."
Meanwhile, back at her own open studio in Saintfield, Chris notices a unique quilt adorning the studio wall. Emma explains the background to this creation, and reveals how the artwork came to fruition after having received a life-changing diagnosis.
In Emma's own words - " I work with the worn, the used, the discarded and the broken to illustrate the journey of personal artefacts as they travel from usefulness, to inevitable redundancy and then resonate personal stories in new work."
With ongoing commissions, workshops, consultancy roles, and the day to day running of the studio, Emma is certainly kept busy, in a vocation which she is certainly passionate about.

The Down about Down Podcast at "A Wee Dander" Art Exhibition, Killyleagh, County Down on Saturday 17th June 2023

The event was organised by local artist, Duxy Leahy. He was joined by fellow artists from the Happy Little Art Club - Tracey McIntosh, Kerry Duignan and Kelsie Erskine. Local artists, Wendy Cromie, Cheryl Martin and Janine Boyle also exhibited their works.
Chris was delighted to speak with Michael McCormick, a resident of Tennessee, who was visiting Killyleagh with his wife and in-laws. Michael's father grew up in Breakey's Brae in the Frederick Street area of the town. Michael and his family, who had been staying at the Coaching Inn and Hall, called into the exhibition to meet with Duxy and Conal Montgomery. Conal was providing music during the first day of the exhibition, and Michael was treated to Conal singing "The Cornerstone." One of Duxy's paintings of Killyleagh Castle is on display in Michael's office in Atlanta!
Duxy, no stranger to local art exhibitions, decided that he would invite as many artists as he possibly could fit into the banqueting area of the venue. Duxy, who runs a local art class every Tuesday night, wanted to give some of his class the opportunity to display their work in public.
Within a few hours of the exhibition opening, several of the artists had sold their first paintings.
Ballynahinch artist, Kerry Duignan, regularly attends Duxy's art class. She had previously displayed her work at an exhibition of the art class held in the local library some months ago. Like so many artists, her interest was triggered during the covid pandemic. Kerry is inspired by her love of the sea and swimming.
Janine Boyle, who is usually attending to her guests at the Coaching Inn and Hall, also had her paintings on display. She explained to Chris that the exhibition in the banqueting hall was something different. "It just shows you the versatility of what it can be today. It is the most amazing gallery with the most amazing talent." Janine started her painting pathway during lockdown, when she had a lot of time on her hands. "It was a little bit of therapy."
Local Killyleagh artist, Wendy Cromie, exhibited her series of paintings which were primarily local well-known scenes from the area. "Killyleagh is such a fantastic place to live. As an artist I just love the colours and to be close to the water. It really inspires me. There is so much inspiration around the town."
Tracey McIntosh, from Killyleagh, also attends Duxy's art class. She has known him from the age of eleven and she admires his work. "I had never painted in my life and I thought I would try something new," she explained. "The talent I get to watch every Tuesday night brings out the best in everybody. It's amazing!"
Cheryl Martin, another well-known resident from Killyleagh, is an artist who avoids landscapes and seascapes. "No landscapes or seascapes for me. I like big bright colours in your face" She had a range of illustrative portraits on display.
Duxy arranged to have proceeds from one of his paintings and a raffle to be donated to The Well charity in Kilkeel. "I have seen first hand what they do. They save lives on a daily basis."

The Down about Down Podcast at The Corner Stone Fest, Killyleagh, County Down
The Down about Down Podcast, hosted by Chris Scott, visited The Corner Stone Fest, Killyleagh, County Down, Northern Ireland on Saturday 10th June 2023 and chatted with several of the talented performers who appeared on stage.
This is the second year of the event has been held in the town. Local singer/songwriter, Conal Montgomery, organised the event in aid of LCCL Pop Up Art, who are based in Downpatrick. This is a community hub assisting people with addiction, depression and mental health.
The Fest was held in the Dufferin Coaching Inn & Hall, situated at Main Street, Killyleagh hosted eleven acts over twelve hours. The sell-out event saw the return of Downpatrick’s own talented Charlie Hanlon, who recently supported Pete Doherty in The Limelight, Belfast. 15-year-old Zac Mac from Lurgan, also returned to the stage, and wooed the audience with his amazing guitar skills. Other returning artists included Emma Deegan and Connor Laird, Barry Shields (Every March) and Madison Stella Music.
This was a first appearance at the event for Newtownards singer/songwriter, Rikki Jordan, Killyleagh’s Jamie Quinn, Short Circuit and Take it Easy.
The organiser, Conal Montgomery, also appeared on stage performing several songs from his recent albums, with his band Stillwater.
The night concluded with Conal’s new rock band called Black Dog Moon. They have just released their second single titled Mr. Trauma.
The event raised a massive £2550 for the Downpatrick Charity. Local talent, giving up their time and supporting the local community! A big thank-you to everyone involved!

Tools for Solidarity
Ever wondered what you could do with unwanted tools cluttering up your garage? Perhaps you have a sewing machine, from yesteryear, gathering up dust in an attic. Well now it can be put to good use!!
In this podcast Chris talks at length to Stephen Wood, co-ordinator for the charity Tools for Solidarity, which has been in existence for almost forty years.
Chris visits the workshop at 55a Sunnyside Street, Belfast and learns about the background to a charity that is “fully run by international, local and supported volunteers.”
The main focus of Tools for Solidarity is “to support artisans in the poorest parts of the world and mostly in the countries of Africa.”
Refurbished tools, sewing machines and machinery are shipped out to Africa to assist communities and various groups improve their level of income.
There are many benefits, both for those benefactors in the developing world, and the volunteers who are involved in repairing and refurbishment.
The charity also promotes the awareness of sustainable development issues and deliver the Education for Sustainable Future programme to schools and youth groups.

Killinchy's International Cross Country Runner - Jim Kenmore on the Down about Down Podcast with Chris Scott
In this podcast Chris is in conversation with Jim Kenmore, a resident of the Killinchy area, County Down.
Jim, in his younger days, was a cross country runner with the Ballydrain Harriers in the late 1950s and early 1960s whilst working as a fitter in Comber Mill.
At about the age of seventeen he was encouraged to join the Harriers by Tom Cromie, and it wasn't long before Jim was making the headlines in the local press.
Jim talks to Chris about his early schooldays, training with Ballydrain Harriers, and his international trips to Lisbon and Brussels to compete against the best runners in Europe. Jim would eventually succumb to an injury and had to withdraw from the sport. He had many accolades under his belt prior to this point including Northern Ireland Youth, All Ireland Youth, Northern Ireland Junior, All Ireland Junior, 2nd in the English Junior and the Northern Ireland Senior.
The headlines and opening paragraph in Ireland's Saturday Night on 14th February 1959 read - "Kenmore streaks in 400 yards ahead. Jim Kenmore, the 18-year-old runner from Comber, proved beyond dispute he has the stuff champions are made of by winning the Northern Ireland Senior Cross Country Championship at Dundonald this afternoon. The frail-looking millworker who only weighs 8 stone, and never runs without his lucky red beret, is the true successor to the great Steve McCooke. No wonder they called him the lone ranger on the hilly course today for never in the eight mile race did he see any of his rivals in the 100 man field...."

Bygone Days in Newcastle, County Down with author, Judy Grove-White.
Bryansford author, Judy Grove-White, has penned her second book titled ‘The Bus Stops at Burrendale Corner’. Her book is a look at the story of Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland from 1946 to 1952. In this latest podcast, Judy talks to Chris at length about her background and family. Her grandparents came to Burrendale in the late 1930s and settled in a house where the Burrendale Hotel is now situated. Her grandfather had been in India and had worked on the railways. Although originally from the Dungannon and Coalisland area, they decided to return to Ireland and settle in this beautiful part of County Down.
Judy talks about her grandfather's diaries, and how she used extracts from them as a backdrop to her books. He had been a keen gardener and recorded details including the weather, damage caused by the rabbits, catching brown trout at Maghera and his observations from his walks to and from Newcastle.
Judy's first book, called ‘Newcastle Co Down 1939 – 1945 Snapshots from a Family Diary’, related the story of the town from 1939 to 1945 and was based on both her grandfather's diary and local newspapers. Her latest book looks at the post war era in the vicinity. Life was changing for local people, including a shortage of fuel, housing expansion, and the beginning of the National Health Service. The book ends with the marriage of Judy's parents in 1952.
Judy also talks to Chris about her time in the library service and what resources it offers to members of the public who are interested in researching local history.
"One of the reasons why I am doing these books is to preserve some of that history - local people's history, " said Judy.

In this podcast, first recorded in November 2021, Chris chats with Alfie Murray (senior) about his life as a butcher. Alfie Murray Family Butchers is a well established third generation business at Cross Street, in Killyleagh, County Down.
Alfie started as an apprentice butcher, at the age of 16, with Belfast butcher, John Shaw, who had shops at 199 Newtownards, Road, 49 Ormeau Road and 11 Glensharragh Park. He talks about travelling to Belfast by bus from his home in the Ballygowan area to work each day. .n apprentice was signed up for 5 years in those days. Later in life, Alfie took up an opportunity to take over an existing butcher's shop at Cross Street, Killyleagh. It had been owned by Alexander Elliott, J.P.
Alfie comments on the many changes in the trade. "Years ago people came in looking for stewing meat, stewing lamb, ox hearts and kidneys. These things are all gone now. Nobody asks for these. Very few."
Alfie also talks to Chris about the life cycle of the turkey, and throws in some cooking tips for good measure!!

"Laugh now. Cry Later." Graham McClements, local author and radio broadcaster is on the Down about Down podcast in conversation with Chris Scott.
Graham has recently published his third book, titled "Laugh Now. Cry Later." Affectionately known as "Big G", he speaks in depth to Chris about his autobiographical musings. We learn about how ITV's long running TV series - "Crossroads" led to Graham becoming a chef at the age of 14! He later became the youngest head chef in Northern Ireland. Dermot Nesbitt from Crossgar, County Down is in conversation with Chris Scott, host of the Down about Down Podcast.
Dermot was raised in Crossgar and has spent most of his life there. He became one of the most well-known Northern Ireland politicians and was an Ulster Unionist MLA for South Down (1998 - 2007). He was a Junior Minister in the Office of First and Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland.
Now 75, he is no stranger to the microphone, and has been grilled by almost every TV and radio political interviewer imaginable. In this podcast politics is set aside and Dermot talks to Chris about his childhood memories of Crossgar and his family connections in the area. Early days at Barnamaghery Primary School, the killing of the pigs in Crossgar village, dressing up as The Lone Ranger and early memories of Santa Claus are just a few of the memories that are touched upon in this interview!

Uplifting – to the top of the world!
In this latest podcast, Chris has followed up on a previous interview with Killyleagh’s Karen Burns, a world champion powerlifter.
In August last, the 54-year-old mother and grandmother from County Down, Northern Ireland had revealed how she had reached the top of her sport within five years through sheer determination. Karen had set a new British Masters Record for the squat lift earlier this year at Templepatrick, County Antrim and qualified for the Great Britain team. Earlier this month, she represented her country at the World Powerlifting Championships held in Newfoundland, Canada. Karen had appeared on the international stage on three previous championships in Sweden.
On this occasion Karen returned with a bronze and two silver medals. She talks to Chris about her preparation for her trip to Canada and participating in the World Championships. The Great Britain Powerlifting team included twenty ladies. Out of whom nine were appearing for the first time in an international event. The Great Britain ladies brought home eleven gold, thirteen silver and ten bronze medals.

A Stroke of Genius on The Down about Down Podcast with Killyleagh artist, Duxy Leahy
In this podcast, Chris welcomes back Killyleagh artist, Darren (Duxy) Leahy. They last had a conversation several months ago during an exhibition of a selection of this local artist’s paintings in Killyleagh Library, situated in the town’s High Street.
The local artist’s third exhibition proved to be a success. The local library now features in new art venture for Duxy!
The Christmas season is just around the corner and the rush will be starting soon. Perhaps sending Christmas cards is a thing of the past, but Duxy begs to differ.
After a gentle persuasion, he has released one of his 2021 paintings as a Christmas card, which are available to purchase direct from the artist.
“When I released the details on my social media a few weeks ago, I found it to be the busiest forty-five minutes of my life!” he tells Chris.
The cards depict one of the area’s most iconic landmarks – Killyleagh Castle, complete with Santa Claus, snow and a Christmas tree. Due to the demand, Duxy has released another batch of the cards, bearing the greeting, “Merry Christmas from Killyleagh.”
Do have a listen to the podcast and hear the talented artist talk about his painting and mindfulness. Chris scratches below the “layers of the paint” and Duxy reveals what is really on the canvas. An interesting conversation, revealing how a life story can be painted and an explanation of the artist’s “inner child” works.
Earlier in his career Duxy had always dreamt of having an exhibition but he felt his paintings were not up to standard. “I thought my paintings weren’t good enough and I wasn’t worth it.” “There was a time when things in my life had slipped very badly and I had reached my lowest point.” Suffering from severe depression and anxiety, he sought help and managed to change his life around and continue his journey in a new direction. He still had a passion for creativity and after years of inactivity he returned to the canvas in 2017 having been persuaded to create a commission once again. Not wholly content with his chosen mediums of watercolour, pen and ink, he began to explore working with acrylics. He found himself relearning his skills in new ways and has since sold work all over the world, whilst maintaining his ever-growing fan base at home through commissions and exhibitions. Duxy has now had three successful art exhibitions.

"Aiming High" - with Chelsey Logan (from Killyleagh) - Education Project Officer at Brentford Football Club - on the Chris Scott Show, FM105 Down Community Radio - Wednesday 7th September 2022 (7-8pm)
This week Chris is in conversation with 24 year-old Chelsey Logan from Killyleagh, County Down, Northern Ireland who works with Brentford Football Club as an Education Project Officer. Chelsey, who was interviewed recently on BBC Radio London, is a former pupil at Blackwater Integrated College and SERC Downpatrick. She talks to Chris about her journey from school to University and her career path to date.
In 2017 she attended St Marys University Twickenham where she graduated in 2020 with a BSc(Hons) in Coaching, Science and Physical Education.
Chelsey commenced her career as an Educational Tutor with Harlequins Rugby Club, a premiership club based in London. She delivered BTEC and GCSE qualifications to a range of NEET and Special Needs learners aged 16-20 years old.
In March 2021 Chelsey continued to follow her dreams and accepted the position of Education Programme Coordinator with Brentford.
Chelsey has never forgotten her roots.
“If it wasn’t for Blackwater and its teaching staff, I wouldn’t have found my passion for sports and education which enabled me to further my own education and find my dream job.”
When asked about a word of encouragement for those who are following behind Chelsey told Chris - "Just don't let anybody stand in your way and tell you that you can't do something, because if you really put your mind to it and put the hours of practice, not just in sport but in education or in anything you want to do, then you will reap the rewards after that...."
She is certainly an inspiration to those young people who want to follow their dreams!

Brian Cassidy, president of the Belfast Burns Association, pops in to talk about the gig in The Black Box. It has been organised by both the Belfast Burns Association and St. Andrews Society Belfast. Reely Jiggered are supported by singer/songwriter Brendan Monaghan. All proceeds from the event are to raise awareness and support for Motor Neurone Disease.
Reely Jiggered have headlined at many international festivals in Italy, Germany, Mexico and Japan, to name but a few. Alison graduated with a Masters in Performance with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2013. She is also a Director of the National Junior Choir of Northern Ireland. Her singing debut was at the age of 16 with the Royal Scottish national Orchestra in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. She has performed for the Queen, Prince Charles, and the First Minister for Scotland. Alison has sang the Scottish national Anthem at Scottish International Rugby games. The list of accolades are endless!
Fiona is a radio presenter with three radio stations. She was presented with Gold award in the Community Radio Awards in 2020 for female presenter of the year.

Loreena is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. Listen in to Chris chatting with Maryland resident - Kate Spanos about the links between the Irish and the island of Montserrat (The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean) in the West Indies.
Kate describes herself as a dancer, educator, scholar, communicator, and arts administrator. She is interested in storytelling, community building, and looking at dance as a means of social change.
Kate has links this side of "the Pond." She received her Master’s degree in Traditional Irish Dance Performance from the University of Limerick‘s Irish World Academy of Music & Dance.
Kate earned her Ph.D. in Dance & Performance Studies at the University of Maryland, USA. Her dissertation is entitled: “Dancing the Archive: Rhythms of Change in Post-Volcano Identities on Montserrat, West Indies.” During her research she investigated the role of dance, music, and festival performances in the formation of national and cultural identities on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. "It has historical ties to Ireland and performances of “Irishness” there differ from elsewhere in the world, especially during the island’s annual St. Patrick’s Festival."
Kate talks to Chris about her life's journey to date and experiences in Monserrat.

The project began after a successful application to the Assets Recovery Community Scheme for a music-based project for young people with support from the village's community association.
Chris went along to observe the group in action, and ended up joining in!
The "Our Town" project aims to provide a group of young people from Killyleagh with a creative forum in which to come together, express themselves, gain confidence and learn new skills.
Do listen in to the show to appreciate the multitude of talent we have! Chris talks to Neil Foster and Conal Montgomery, the project facilitators, and the other participants - Jamie, Emma, Roberta and Conor. Each week they have been taking part in what is described as music therapy. The group sessions endeavour to explore mental benefits of collective playing whilst fostering creativity.
You can hear some of the collaboration and improvisation during the programme. West African Djembe drums combined with an electric guitar make compelling listening!
There are also individual performances from a number of the talented participants. Not to be missed!

Neil also chats about his work as a music therapist and and also his compositions which are described as "cinematic, expansive, colourful music inspired by dreams, landscapes, horizons and spaces of all kinds, bringing elements together through intuitive experimentation He uses pianos, synths, vocals, percussion, and sound samples which include local bird calls, the ocean, radio static, mountain wind, voices and urban noise."

Chris visits the grave of William Samuel Montgomery, at Killyleagh Presbyterian Graveyard.
William Samuel Montgomery was born on the 5th November, 1893 in the townland of Ballymacreely, Killyleagh, County Down, Northern Ireland. He later joined the 16th Royal Irish Rifles and went to France in 1915. He was wounded at the Battle of the Somme and on 17th November 1916 he died as a result of his injuries, aged 24.
Chris speaks to Killyleagh's Austin Cheevers about the life and times of a soldier during this period of our history. Austin, who works at The Somme Centre in Newtownards and has a keen interest in local soldiers serving in The Great War, joins Chris at the graveside of William Samuel Montgomery, Rifleman 534. A fitting tribute to those "who gave their all for our tomorrow."
During the programme there are excerpts from local press reports during WW1 read by Michelle Dorans from Dorans Academy of Speech and Drama.

Listen in to The Chris Scott Show, FM 105 Down Community Radio first broadcast on Wednesday evening – 13th October 2021 (7 -8pm) to hear about the battle against litter on the streets of Killyleagh, County Down.
Chris Sheehan, Catriona Loughran and Jayne Macrae talk to Chris about the ongoing work being carried out by Killyleagh Clean Team. They are certainly making an impact on their local community.
Later in the programme Chris talks about his own “experiment” with litter picking in Killyleagh.
Armed with a bag, picker and a dictaphone he recorded each piece of litter collected. The route was approximately nine tenths of a mile - encompassing the Shrigley Road passing the Castle and onto the Coiley Hill Road to where the pavement ends. One hour exactly. The mobile app informed him he had covered 2091 steps from start to finish. The analysis of the collection was interesting.
355 pieces of litter collected. 49.30 per cent of the litter was plastic based. 91 pieces of litter were drinks cans. Of those identified, 60.5 per cent were alcohol based!
The haul also included 35 pieces of plastic, 21 plastic bottles, 18 sweet wrappers, 11 chocolate bar wrappers and 10 plastic wrappers. All crammed into a bag and a quarter.
So there you have it - 355 pieces of Rubbish per Minute!!
On average 5.89 items per step!!

"You could smell them....but you just couldn't catch them....!"
The words of one lady competitor today after this amazing event held at earlier on Killyleagh's little piece of Strangford Lough.
Well over 100 competitors converged on the Quay and Netwalk area at Killyleagh to take part in the regatta. The first race started at 10.00am, with the final race at 2.30pm. Competitors and spectators were blessed with glorious weather and almost perfect conditions for their row. The sun beamed down on teams from Ardglass, Donaghadee, Dundrum, Killyleagh, Portavogie, Sketrick and Strangford as they competed against each other across the different races.
In this week's programme Chris chats to some of the competitors from Killyleagh across the age groups, some of the background staff, team members from the Strangford, Dundrum and Portavogie clubs, and Stephen Robinson from Killyleagh, who assisted in building their first Skiffy many years ago!
