We are full swing into the vernal equinox, and, at the end of the 1st quarter of 2022. A perfect time to be rethinking cliches. This week’s cliché - giving the benefit of the doubt.

It is defined as: "a concession that a person or fact must be regarded as correct or justified, if the contrary has not been proven."

But saying it out loud...the semantics....they are a bit troubling for me, because where is the benefit in doubting?

Like the others: turn the other cheek, grin & bear it, be the bigger person...it often seems the party transgressed upon, is the one expected to make concession.

How do we fortify ourselves, when in the throes of the ebb and flow of life? Regarding oneself with wild curiosity. Here’s an example:

Let’s say you discover an old metal box of your childhood toys – Jax, plastic Army men, a deck old maid cards, and other items of that era. Curiosity compels you to open it; feelings of nostalgia overtake you, as you being to tie each item to its rightful memory.

As @markmanson once said: humans are “a wildly diverse group of smelly creatures.” Indeed we are. I also take that to mean that there is so much we've yet to discover about ourselves. Each other. And the world around us.

So get curious!

  • Lofi-Samurai: Love

My earliest memory of formal exercise was Jane Fonda aerobics.  Mom would put on the record, following the routine as it played. Naturally, I would invite myself to her workouts.

As a GenX kid, I took part in the standard outdoor activities of little girls of the 80s:  I jumped rope, hula hooped, rode bikes, and wasn’t half-bad at roller skating. Although I was never particularly athletic, as a kid, I was always moving.

We often take for granted how much movement we actually got as children, simply by getting outside to play. As we get older, however; it takes more of an effort to create time for movement and exercise.

Human desire is infinite. We will always want things. Think back to when internet access first hit the scene. Everyone rushed out to get access to dial-up. Then dial up was ditched for DSL. We then dumped DSL for Wi-Fi. And don’t get me started on music’s transition from the record player to streaming subscriptions.

As new things are presented, we want them, and we need to understand that.

But we also need to temper our desires and understand when enough is enough.

Sometimes, it's good to question conventional wisdom.

Take for instance the old adage of: “quitting is for losers”. Contrary to popular belief though, sometimes, quitting is for winners. According to The Bureau of Labor and Statistics, people are quitting to the tune of around 4+ million. Television shows, even department stores we grew up on, have "called it quits".

Life is a bit of a paradox. It's short, yet it's also long. Too short and too long, to stay somewhere you no longer fit.

I’m sure you’ve seen the rise in grind culture and all the other success tropes: "no days off
“win at all costs” …and another cringe-worthy one: “if you didn’t come out of the pandemic with a new skill, you wasted your time”

It seems as if everyone is so busy shooting for the stars, they are not even hitting the basic target of being, well, human. All around us are ordinary moments and experiences that could very well be extraordinary, just by our love and attention.

We all grew up with a certain set of belief systems. Eventually though, golden rules aren’t so golden anymore. But then you realize you’ve neither the tools, nor the audacity to mentally override them. And when you finally DO get the courage and the tools to override them, it almost feels too late. Hence the term: "late bloomer".

As an aside, I really detest the phrase “it’s never too late”, because in all honesty, the window of opportunity for certain things HAVE INDEED passed. But alas, we can make the most of what we have, and set about a new course. In this episode, I share 4 tools to consider for this stage in life.

You may be late, but you can still bloom.
