Matt & Connor choose this moment to draw Peter into the world of Sharpe and his Company. This entry is decidedly less Horatio Hornblower and more Thin Red Line than the last few entries, but we find plenty to talk about...not least of which Star Wars.
Overtaxed, overworked, and paid off with a knife, a club, or a rope. No, we're not talking about today's politics, we're traveling back to Sherwood Forest! We've seen a few versions of Robin Hood in our time. Some might say too many. At the end of the day, it might just be this one that's worthy of earnest praise. So trend-setting in action/adventure film that it'd feel cliche if you didn't know better. But now you will know better!
This week, the boys open up the Criterion Collection vault and pull out-[checks notes]...a Michael Bay movie? [re-reads] A Michael Bay movie. At least they'll be able to answer one of the great questions of cinema. The most famous, of course, is "what does God need with a starship?" But only slightly lesser known, "Is 1996's 'The Rock' a secret James Bond movie?" There's only one way to find out!
We've got a special treat for you this week. The NFG boys are joined by Mark Usher & Johnny Phillips, hosts of the Mastering McConaughey Podcast. We sit down with them to discuss the 1999 comedy 'Blue Streak', starring Martin Lawrence, Luke Wilson and Dave Chappelle. Lawrence plays Miles, a jewel thief who tries to retrieve a diamond he left at a police station, whereupon he disguises himself as a detective and gets paired with a real policeman to investigate burglaries.

And now it's March, and here's our first episode of 2024. Well be honest, 2023 was not an easy year for the NFG boys, so we took a few months off. Fortunately we had Natalie Wilson, who made a generous donation to Timmy Nelson's (past a future guest) charity stream for Child's Play, a charity that puts video games in the hands and hearts of children that have long stays at a hospital. Natalie decided she wanted to hear our thoughts on "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), and here they are! They'll be standing in lines

Is it a "Santa is dropped into a Die Hard scenario" movie?
Yes... Yes it is. Did you think there was more then one of those? Because this is the only one. Fatman (2020) was more of a kinda bad Coen Brothers revenge story kinda thing. Krampus was a holiday themed horror anthology. Violent Night stands alone as THE "Santa Clause is dropped into a Die Hard scenario" movie. Listen you should watch it. It's pretty good. The boys are going to talk about it for more then an hour.

You're in for a treat today! Matt and Frank are back to bring you a staple of November. No not turkey. No not massive sales on things you don't need. It's Bond season. And with that, both of them have selected two more James Bond entries to cover, as well as an in-depth conversation on the franchise as a whole.
Frank and Matt previously covered Thunderball, Tomorrow Never Dies and No Time to Die on their other podcast Give it Five. You can check out that martini-induced ramble here.
First up Matt brings us Diamonds Are Forever (1971) - Sean Connery's last official trip through the halls of MI6 as he confronts Blofeld yet again. Their battle takes them to Las Vegas, Nevada, the final destination of a diamond-smuggling chain where Blofeld unveils his more deadly evil plan to date.
Then we move to the Florida Keys for Frank's pick: Licence to Kill (1989), Timothy Dalton's second - and final - wear of the tux. This time Bond goes rogue. Back when it wasn't a cliche. He's on a warpath to avenge the injury to his best friend Felix Leiter. Come to think of it you'd think he'd go after the shark, no? His target: Franz Sanchez, drug kingpin and unofficial power of the fictional island country of Isthmus.
The nightmare that has been Peter's horror movie rubric finally comes to an end as we cover the third and final spooktacular entry in this year's Halloween series with Matt's pick: 1987's The Gate, which was directed by Tibor Takács and stars Stephen Dorff in his film debut.
The Gate follows a group of neighborhood kids who accidentally release a horde of demons from their backyard through a large hole in the ground. Basically Goonies crossed with Evil Dead. With masterful atmosphere, top-notch creature designs and great child actors, The Gate provides you all the hauntingly fun fright that you want from a Halloween movie.
So tune in to hear a scarily-fun conversation, as well as a final breakdown of all three films to find out which Peter arbitrarily decides "wins" this little Octoberial contest.

We're Back From The Grave and Ready To Party!
The whole crew is back to the second film in the "Try not to, but also maybe try to, scare Peter to death series continues with The Return of the Living Dead, 1985's cult classic, directorial debut of famous grump Dan O'Bannon, and the debut of Hollywood star, The Tar Man! We love the Tar Man.
Join us as the boys break down the film, ask some serious questions, re-litigate "The Rubric (TM)", and continue to wonder.... should we show Peter Event Horizon?
Ever had a chance to catch the Pepsi to Tales from the Crypt's Coke? Here's your chance! This George Romero and Stephen King team-up serves as Frank's pitch to scare Peter with a horror movie without making him catatonic. The good news is there's five stories packed into this film so he's got plenty of chances. The bad news is there's five stories packed into this film.
Peter breaks out his horror rubric (TM? probably not) so we can quantitatively determine just how close to the mark this flick hits. After all, that's why God made fathers, babe. That's why God made fathers.

Barbossa's crew attempts to retrieve the final pieces of a hoard of Aztec gold to break the curse laid on them when they stole it. We chat the rocky seas that were swashbuckling movies of the 90s/00s as well as the iconic performance of Jack Sparrow (and what makes it not work the following four times he tries this).

Welcome to red, white and blue Braveheart! This July 4th, come celebrate America's birthday with us as we discuss 2000's epic of (barely) historical proportions!
The Patriot is a historical war film written by Robert Rodat, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Mel Gibson, Chris Cooper, Heath Ledger and Jason Isaacs. The story takes place mainly in rural Berkeley County in South Carolina and depicts Benjamin Martin (Gibson), an American colonist opposed to going to war with Great Britain who, along with his adult son (Ledger), gets swept into the Revolutionary War when his home life is disrupted and one of his sons is murdered by a cruel British officer (Isaacs). Rodat has said Martin is a composite character based on four historical men: Andrew Pickens, Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan and Thomas Sumter.
Benjamin Martin: "Before this war is over I'm going to kill you."
Col. Tavington: "Why wait?"

It's mini-series time! Come with us on a journey as we dive into the series that was designed in a lab deep under London to appeal directly to one Matthew J. Conrad: "Sharpe". "Sharpe" was a TV show that ran from 1993 until 2008 for a grand total of 16 episodes. The hitch is that each episode is 2 hours long! So this is a 16 movie long series that the Brits called a "TV Show". TV makes no sense over there.
ANYWAY, we follow our hero Richard Sharpe (played by Sean Bean at his absolute swarthiest) as he makes his way through the ranks of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars (like we said, designed in a lab for Matt Conrad).
The first up in our adventure is "Sharpe's Rifles", adapted from the novel of the same name. We meet Richard and the rest of the Chosen Men. They fight, they fight, and well... they also fight. Secrets are kept secret, French people get shot, Spanish women are seduced, and a Rothschild dresses up as a Methodist woman. It's a trip.

We're diving deeper into our "No Bummers...." Series? Era? It certainly is going to last longer than a month. THE FUN CONTINUES UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES! Anyway, this week is Connor's pick, and we're going all the back to the good ole' days of 1997 with the Summer Classic, "Men In Black", the third movie in the Will Smith Superstar Trifecta. Often forgotten as just another summer action comedy, but "Men In Black" has become the prime example of "They Don't Make Them Like They Used To". Join us as we take this trip down memory lane, and then have those memories erased over and over again.

Sometimes, a filmmaker is brave enough to ask the big questions. Questions like... "What if there was a giant alligator?" And some questions, like "What if there was a giant alligator?" have to be asked twice. Today we are investigating the second time a brave filmmaker dared to ask that question of himself, society, and all of us. "Alligator 2: The Mutation" is 1991's sequel(?) to the 1980 original "Alligator", and it has confounded Frank for, what seems to have been his entire life. Today, we're doing a deep dive on "Alligator 2", taking a brief detour to discuss the original, and perhaps the boys will finally have an answer to the age old question... "What if there was a giant alligator?"

This movie is bananas, and the boys dive deep into the alternate reality that Walter Hill created from his highest highs in a post- "48 Hours" Hollywood. It confounded critics and audiences alike at the time, and honestly it still confounds Frank to this day, but we're going on a deep dive into this wildly inventive film. It's streaming out there, so go find it and view it for yourself!

In the spirit of the day we're going taking to the HIGH SEAS for an adventure that's excited and delighted old and young alike for nigh these hundred years! This week the lads look at two versions of the tale. One from 1950, a classic made by Disney. The other made in 1990 where the likes of Charlton Heston portrays the old skallywag Captn' Long John Silver. Next time we'll look at two others and they'll swing into battle to see which one is the top of the mast!

This week we're covering the 1998 spy "comedy" The Avengers starring Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman and Sean "The Weatherman" Connery. One of the many 90s movies based on a 60s television show, this box office dud follows the fashionable adventures of John Steed and Mrs. Peele as they work together to thwart a meteorlogical megalomaniac hellbent on global domination (in Celsius).
