Listen to Jessica's great example of securing a "hidden" job. Note that it took networking and advanced research of a targeted role/company she had. She seized the opportunity when talking with one of the organization's leaders to "tap into a hidden job".
In reality, the job was a need the organization needed - she recognized it and got the job!
"Yes, Virginia, there is a Hidden Job Market!"
But, it may look a little different than you think.
Larger employers are often legally required to publicly post all available jobs, but small to medium businesses (SMBs) generaly have more leeway. There are several reasons a job might not be posted, and several ways you can take advantage of it. This is the topic of today's discussion with Andy Bowden and Jessica Richardson.
Highlights:
Most jobs are posted
Why would jobs not be posted?
How can job seekers tap into these unposted roles?

Career paths rarely move in a straight line and there are many paths from point A to B. Sometimes, the journey forward requires a series of shifts and adjustments rather than direct steps. Other times, career changes come from organizational decisions or life circumstances over which you have no control. To continue climbing the ladder, you may need to move to another one.
Listen to Jessica and Andy use their careers as examples of how you can navigate, adapt, and take control of your own career!
The hiring process may have been built for employers, but we're seeing a shift to include the candidate experience. When used well, applicant tracking systems can help recruiters and employers communicate with candidates throughout the hiring process.
Key Points
1. It's less about an ATS-friendly resume and more if you're an ATS-friendly candidate.
2. What does it mean to be "qualified" when applying through an ATS?
3. Why would you get a rejection seconds after applying? Surely that's a bot, right? (Wrong)
4. What does a great candidate experience look like using an applicant tracking system?
As experienced recruiters and business professionals, we have direct experience in the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). They are not the enemy! They are not what makes the hiring process "broken" (and in fact, it works as intended)!
Job Hunters need to know better than to put forth a resume that gets "past the ATS." There is no getting past an ATS when it comes to applying for jobs in many organizations. Even if you've successfully networked with a hiring manager, you would still be required to apply through the system (in the US, most companies).
So, take a listen! Tell us what you think! What "myths" can we help bust for you?
We dive into what a "job hopper" is (and what it is not), how job-hopping shows up on a resume, how hiring professionals evaluate short role tenures and gaps, and how to avoid the label of "job hopper."
What is the difference between a qualified candidate and a strong candidate? How do you stand out among hundreds of applicants in a competitive job market? In this episode, we discuss what makes a strong candidate, including improving your marketing, maintaining relevancy, and developing relationships.
Highlights:
1:14 - The importance of demonstrating results, achievements, and impact
3:50 - Career changes and preparing for a job search
7:55 - Highlight your unique qualifications / typical errors
9:55 - Show leadership
14:45 - Demonstrate your successes
17:08 - Show enthusiasm for the role / "Own Your Awesome"
24:15 - When you don't have results to show
25:50 - How to stay ready for opportunity throughout your career
28:40 - Understanding failure's place in success / behavioral interview questions
34:05 - Networking and building relationships
37:22 - Use what you love in your job search / find what works for you
We keep hearing the term "candidate-driven market," which to many implies that there's a job for every candidate and that candidates are setting the rules in the job market.
There's truth to this, but there are several considerations that affect job seekers' success and experience in a candidate's market.
Listen in to hear why factors such as qualification and networking are critical in this market, along with strategies to improve your chances at a phone screen/interview.
