In this episode of the “because, bikers matter!” ® Podcast with founder & Host David "Vegas" Shuman interviews Alanna Bencivenga, the co-founder of Hi-Viz Flag Company, at the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Alanna shares the origins of the company, which started in Oceanside with a dream of expanding into the off-road industry. Recognizing a gap in the market for flags, especially in the off-road industry, they wanted to make a statement and add more fun and personality to the required flag on vehicles in California. The flags offered by Hi-Viz Flag Company are made of 100D open weave polyester, which has been tested extensively for durability. They have found that these flags last the longest and maintain vibrant colors even after washing and exposure to the sun. The flags are also double-stitched for added durability. Alanna mentions that Hi-Viz Flag Company offers single-sided flags, as they prefer to rock the single-sided look. However, they also sell sets for those who prefer to have matching flags on both sides of their vehicles. The podcast episode also includes a mention of Motorcycle Safety Lawyers®, a sponsor of the show, and their expertise in handling personal injury cases related to motorcycle accidents. Alanna mentions that while California does not have specific flag requirements, other states like Oklahoma require either an orange flag or an American flag above the vehicle. Hi-Viz Flag Company can be found on various platforms, including Instagram, Etsy, eBay, and their website, hivizflagco.com. The episode concludes with David "Vegas" Shuman signing off and mentioning a 1948 Harley Hummer on display at the convention center. David "Vegas" Shuman here with “because, bikers matter!” ® Podcast. This week I sit down, at an undisclosed location with the founder of Ride Janie Ride Foundation, Luke Pennings.
The Ride Janie Ride Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2007 to support those affected by cancer. The foundation was started by Luke Pennings and his friends, who wanted to help a lifelong Downers Grove resident, Janie Balwell, who was afflicted with cancer in 2006. Janie needed a stem cell transplant and her insurance company would not cover all of the out-of-pocket expenses. So the group of motorcycle enthusiasts decided to put together a “pop-up ride” to help raise money for Janie.
The first ride in 2007 was a huge success, with 750 riders attending. The group had no idea how many people would show up, and were surprised by the turnout. The ride was coordinated with the help of local law enforcement, and the route was changed so that it passed by Janie’s house. Janie, who had just had her stem cell transplant and could not attend the ride, was able to wave to all the motorcycles as they passed by. This experience was the start of the Ride Janie Ride Foundation, and it changed the purpose of the ride from just raising money to providing emotional support to those battling cancer.
Since then, the foundation has grown and expanded, with more rides and events being held each year. The foundation also has a nomination process, where people can nominate someone they know who is battling cancer and could use the foundation’s help. The website, which was built by Luke Pennings in two weeks, is now hosted on the Member Buzz platform, and allows people to sign up for rides, buy merchandise, and more.
The Ride Janie Ride Family Foundation has been a great support to those affected by cancer, and has helped many people in their fight against the disease. The foundation is a testament to the power of community, and shows that even in difficult times, people can come together to help others in need. David "Vegas" Shuman here with Because Bikers Matter Podcast. If you're a biker and never heard of the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis then are you really even a biker? I had the exceptional opportunity to talk to the Founder, President & CEO of @SturgisBuffaloChip ; Rod "Woody" Woodruff. His story of starting Buffalo Chip is aligned with our why on being so passionate supporting the Motorcycle community. Woody and I swap stories of how great the motorcycle community is towards supporting very important causes.
Since 1981, Woody has transformed what was once 20 acres of land into a 600-acre entertainment destination. Top name entertainment acts consistently fill The Chip’s concert lineup year after year, including icons like Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Kid Rock and Ozzy Osbourne. Initially, Woody continued to maintain an active law practice and develop real estate for 20 years before turning all of his time to maintaining one of the top party venues in America affectionately known as The Best Party Anywhere®. Woody has turned the Buffalo Chip into the Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling®. His wife Carol and his children Daymon and Toni also assist in the management of the Buffalo Chip.
