A two-part exploration of the 'Aquatic Ape' hypothesis first proposed 50 years ago. Presented by Sir David Attenborough, this programme was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2005.
Programme one: considers Raymond Dart's Taung Child discovery and the ensuing savannah theory of human origins, as popularised by Robert Ardrey and Desmond Morris.
Programme two: looks at evidence accumulated in the last 10-15 years driving the anthropological herd inexorably down to the water's edge. It includes reports on brain evolution, highlighting the essential fatty acids and nutrients that can only be sourced in the marine food chain; the global coastal migrations of early hominids, including major water crossings 1 million years ago.

Archive material from the Cambridge University and Royal Geographical Society's expedition to the Torres Strait in 1898. It was primarily an ethnomusicology expedition, and they used the very newly invented wax cylinder recording machine, presented to the world by Thomas Edison only a few years earlier.
The recordings were mainly for note taking, but many have been preserved and restored by the British Library.
Janet Topp-Fargion, the British Libraries head of ethnomusicology, takes us on a journey through they remarkable and singularly rare archive, what it meant at the time, and how these recordings are being used by indigenous people of Australia to resolve land rights.
