We are sitting having lunch with Diamondo, Leftheres and their extended family. Their daughter Eleni chats with us about many topics related to Ikaria and longevity.
From the challenges we all face – access to healthy food and the rise of technology – to the simple (but not easy) challenges of slowing down and family relationships.
Last week our episode took you to the dinner meal – today’s it’s lunch – up in the mountains of Ikaria.
We hope you enjoy!

Is there a next generation of Blue Zones?
Are the Blue Zones dying? Or will the next generation lead the way in how to master our longevity?
Join us at the dining table with the two people who we believe have made the Blue Zone of Ikaria is well-regarded as it is – Thea and Athina. Athina is the chef responsible for bringing Ikaria’s food to international acclaim.
But it’s actually the younger brigade who steal the show on this podcast. Giannis, Catarina and Dino join Thea and Athina (and a cameo by Thea’s husband Ilias). We talk nutrition and longevity, but we also talk purpose and fulfilment, love and family, and we do so with ages ranging from 21 to 81.
So hold tight, skip forward 15 seconds here and there is the Greek translation bamboozles you, and enjoy this beautiful conversation held under the stars on a beautiful night in Ikaria.

Is Longevity Simple? Or is the term longevity, like the term wellness, being exploited for commercial gain?
Longevity tells us how to live longer and healthier. But is it as simple as taking a supplement or well marketed product? Are we over simplifying something which is relatively complicated?
Are we, in looking for the easy path, the quick fix, in fact racing to the end of life without realising it?

A recent episode of the Channel Nine series – Do You Want to Live Forever? – discusses the importance of fibre and the recommendation to increase the intake of wholegrains.
Despite the food pyramid continuing to prioritize wholegrains, there is no doubt that the best source of fibre, both soluble and insoluble, will come from fruits and vegetables and not just a reliance on ‘healthy’ wholegrains.
Which leads to the question – are all grains considered equal? If you are consuming grains recommended in the food pyramid for each meal and snack during your day, is this still considered ‘healthy’?
Diets continue to come and go and they can be polarising. Taking a moderate approach across all food groups and utilizing Damian’s palm method continues to stand the test of time. You can revisit Damian’s Palm Method here.
In this episode we also refer to episode 21 of 100 Not Out with Don Riddington. Marcus also talks about the movie Nyad, starring Annette Bening. This is available to watch on Netflix.

We receive plenty of feedback from our audience that one of the things they love about 100 Not Out is the banter and conversation between ourselves. So with that in mind, today we sit down and discuss the power of a conversation.
Have we lost the art of holding a conversation? Is it easier to send a text message or ignore the elephant in a room rather than having a healthy and robust conversation. Has the last decade of continual change in society meant that we have lost the ability to have a different opinion and still like each other?
Damian wonders if in today’s world that the biggest problem with conversation is that people are listening not with curiosity or to understand, but to reply and fix. Marcus challenges us to listen, don’t fix and that much of the art of conversation lies in the listening.

With the rising popularity of fasting, has breakfast been demonized unfairly?
What does it mean to be a breakfast eater today? Is it eggs and greens to kickstart your day like Marcus or is it an Espresso or two to tide you over to your first meal of the day, sometime around lunchtime when the hanger kicks in?
Damo sees breakfast as an opportunity to provide fuel for the brain to get going for the day ahead, so that we can think clearly. An opportunity to help balance our moods, hormones and creating less stress within the body.
Maybe breakfast isn’t for you and eating your calorie load across two meals in the afternoon works great for you. But if breakfast is the meal that you look forward to most and it helps you feel balanced, don’t skip it just because everyone else is doing it. One size does not fit all.

Many years ago, Greg McKeown introduced us to the humble brag, but has the humble brag (we spoke about this on episodes 68 and 378) now found itself an older cousin called Urgency Culture?
Do you find yourself unable to say NO just in case a better offer pops up and then find yourself over-committed and overwhelmed?
Do you preface your answers to “How are you?” with ‘I’m busy!”.
Do you drop what you are doing every time a message or a call comes through?
Do you find yourself checking your phone and social media at every opportunity, just in case you miss out on something happening in the world around you?
A sense of urgency can look very different from one person to another, but following on from a recent National Geographic article about responding immediately to texts, is it time to pause and find ways to counteract this urgency culture?
In an increasingly connected world, urgency culture blurs the line between what is urgent and what is important. The Eisenhower Matrix is a great starting point as to how you can decipher between what is urgent and what is important.
In this discussion, Damo and Marcus share some suggestions as to how you can find the time in your life to slow down and help move yourself towards a parasympathetic state of mind, rest, digest and repair.

Alcohol – What’s the truth? Does your body go into shutdown if you consume alcohol as Dave Asprey recently stated in this Instagram post.
There is truth in the fact that alcohol is a toxin and it’s a toxin to the brain and the body has to clear it. But should it be so demonized that it is to blame for Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Diabetes and Cancer?
Like most things, whether it be nutrition, movement or alcohol, we encourage you to be your own experiment. Some alcohol suits some better than others; some can handle one or two, others none. It’s the same wath coffee. Tune into how your body responds and choose accordingly. Be your own experiment.

Following a recent instagram post by Dan Buettner who introduced a medical doctor to rebut Dave Asprey’s claims about oats, we ask if we are about to see the longevity space erupt in war. We can’t be sure who is throwing the first grenade. Was it Dave Asprey or is it Dan Buettner?
Do we need to rush out and soak our oats for breakfast tomorrow to live to 100 and beyond? In our analysis of the Blue Zone diets, no other Blue Zone consumes oats regularly as part of their diet. If we look at Okinawa, they’re eating rice. If we look at Costa Rica, they’re having corn.
What we do know is that it’s not nutrition alone that helps people live a long life.
Despite us pitting longevity guru v longevity guru and the clickbait that we see daily, such conversations are raising people’s consciousness on what it takes to age well. Depending on how you want to approach longevity, we encourage you to find the model that best fits with your philosophy and then move in that direction.

In a recent article, the oldest woman on the planet, María Branyas Morera, 115, said that the key to longevity is to stay away from toxic people.
We know that the quality of relationships can have a large impact on the quality of our health but why do we often find ourselves in toxic situations, unable to step away? Do we get stuck because we can’t see a pathway out?
Regardless if the toxic relationship is with others, food, money, family; the biggest question we have to ask ourselves is, is what we are putting up with worthy of what we want in our lives?
This episode discusses toxic relationships at length and acknowledges that often people don’t have the support in their lives to help them exit such a relationship. If this episode has triggered you, please have the courage to care about yourself enough to find your way out of the toxic situation. Organizations such as Rize Up, dedicated to supporting the many families affected by domestic and family violence, are able to help up.
In this episode we refer to a previous episode of 100 Not Out with Mario Martinez and his conversation around righteous anger. You can refer to episode 181 here.

This week we welcome long time listener, first time guest Anita Spehar onto the podcast.
From working 10+hour days, 7 days a week to now traveling solo in her motorhome, Anita recognised that for much of her life she had been giving to others – from work to family and everything in between – and decided that for the next 12 months, she needed to make her life about giving to herself.
The result? House sold. Motorhome purchased. Solo traveling around Australia, not to mention joining Damo and MP in both Ikaria and Sardinia on their upcoming 100 Not Out Longevity Experience. “Why wait for when you can’t do, do it while you can” is Anita’s new motto.
As Anita says, “if you feel like you’re missing out on something, get your boots on and do it!”

A question we are often asked is Are the Blue Zones Dead?
Settle in with a cuppa as we discuss whether, as the older people die, will we see the Blue Zones die with them? Or do we follow those that are now 80 and 90, with access to improved infrastructure and technology and see the impact that such things have on their own longevity?
Whether you think the Blue Zones are dead or alive, longevity remains as much about the top three things – purpose, engagement and movement as it is the avoidance of chronic disease.
Does the strong connection to rituals, land, family and food continue to hold those in the Blue Zones in good stead to continue on their longevity path and continuing to be our greatest teachers on what longevity is?
In this episode, we mention chronic diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s and the impact that these have on longevity stats. We recommend you revisit episode 42 of 100 Not Out and our conversation around Dementia and Alzheimer’s with Professor Michael Woodward.

There certainly has been a theme in our recent episodes over the rise of social media as a way to educate and influence our health choices!
A friend of the podcast, David Wolfe who featured in episode 6 of 100 Not Out, recently shared a reel on his instagram account which resulted in over 900 shares and 730 comments.
This reel was not a ‘ how to boil a frog’ post but aimed at alarming the viewers that even when dead, animals feel pain too!

Is Ageing Amazing? We certainly think so!
In the media and around the water cooler, you’ll hear plenty of talk on the negativity of ageing.
Do you disqualify yourself from ageing well or do you embrace it?
Do you look at ageing well from a vanity perspective or from what you are still able to do?
It’s often said that we are living longer, but dying slower. Are you too busy to work on how you want to age? Too busy to move? Too busy to eat well? Too busy to embrace your community? Too busy to spend time doing what you love? What is it that you are doing today to help you embrace the ethos that ageing is amazing?
For many, the end is very long. Certainly not for Bill Stevens who, at 95 years young, is still teaching water aerobics at his local gym and inspiring many. You can catch his recent appearance on Nine News Melbourne here. You can also be re-inspired by our chat with Bill on episode 220 here.
Don’t buy into the lie that ageing isn’t amazing! Be amazing with us in Ikaria and Sardinia! We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. If you would like to join us, don’t put it off any longer. Head to 100notout.com today for all the information.

Whilst most people are trying to put the brakes on ageing, todays’ guest embraces the ups and downs of it with joy and gratitude, using her social media presence to empower others to do the same.
The Middle Aged Goddess, also known as Jane McCann, having bore witness to loved ones’ premature end of life, understands what a gift and a privilege it is to age.
Jane is not afraid to tackle the big topics including menopause, mental health and divorce and today’s conversation navigates them all. She has found a number of tools that work for her and encourages us to do the same.
Join us for a refreshing conversation with Jane as she empowers us to change the narrative that is often presented around growing older. Meet it with joy, embrace the changes, keep learning and love yourself more.

Sinead O’Connor told us that Nothing Compares to You, but who are you comparing yourself to?
Comparing yourself to someone that you saw on social media could put you on an unhealthy pathway, both physically and emotionally.
But can taking inspiration from those around you in key areas of life which are important to you – movement, aging, living well, health, golf – be a tool for making better decisions on how you live your own life?
Join us today as we take inspiration from those around us, and discuss how much comparison and judgment to those around us can impact on our ability to make either an empowered or disempowered decision.
Don’t let the statement ‘I should’ get in the way of living your best life. If this is you, you may want to listen to episode 227 where we talk about this.’
If you find yourself being judgy judgy when it comes to comparing yourself to others, revisit episodes 270 and 444.
They say comparison is the thief of all joy, but taking inspired comparison from others when done well can be a healthy form of motivation to be your best self..

Boy oh boy did episode 568 break the internet!
We know that the media’s clickbait approach to health can be confusing, but what about when you see your health practitioner and you leave your appointment feeling confused and like you are just a number in the system?
A long term health aware listener left a recent appointment with an integrative GP feeling exactly that way with regards to recent blood results concerning her good and bad cholesterol particles.
Be prepared to have your mind blown as Damo helps us navigate cholesterol – how we absorb a fraction of cholesterol from what we eat, how our body makes cholesterol and how the liver manufactures cholesterol as a result of physical, emotional and mental stimulus and triggers that it receives from our nervous system.
You’ll walk away from this week’s episode stressing less about the steak, aka cholesterol bomb, you had for last night’s dinner and focusing on adding in more happiness, laughter, fun, movement and sunshine so that we can manufacture our good cholesterol.
Do you want more focus on fun, happiness and sunshine? Join us for this and more when we are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. If you would like to join us, and to find out more, head over to 100notout.com

Following on from episode 568, Marcus shared a recent clip from Dan Buettner who believes the first step in getting healthier and increasing your longevity is to eat at home.
There is no denying that there are numerous benefits to getting back into the kitchen, but have we now gone from food scare to eating out scare? Will eating out make you die sooner?
What about the connection and socialisation which can be achieved through sharing a meal out with family and friends, laughing and having a conversation? Isn’t the value of a meal maximized by sharing it with someone else?
Join us as Damo and Marcus bring common sense to the conversation and share their top three tips for eating out and doing it well.

Now more than ever, there is a litany of conflicting views when it comes to health, in particular what to put on your plate.
Will that skinless chicken breast I ate for lunch give me diabetes? Will I become an addict if I eat animal protein? Can I ever eat meat again if I identify as a vegan?
With so many ‘experts’ at our fingertips, are they influencing us? Scaring us? Or dampening our ability to think critically for ourselves?
Settle in for the ride as Damian and Marcus discuss a recent podcast they listened to where an ‘expert’ made these outrageous comments. What is the damage that such clickbait has on people when it comes to deciding what best to add to their plate?
As the pendulum on what to eat continues to swing from veganism to carnivore, does the truth on what best to eat lay somewhere in the middle?

Are you one of the 80% of the population that are experiencing back pain?
Do you know the difference between chronic and acute pain?
Do you believe that back pain is a normal part of aging and something we just put up with?
There is no doubt that as we get older, things start to lose their fluidity and strength and our ligaments are tighter. There is also no doubt that sitting is the new smoking.
Join us today as Damo presents a Mastersclass in Back Pain and helps join the dots between the spine and brain connection; the importance of stretching and lengthening and maintenance.
We touch on the many beneficial modalities including osteopathy, physiotherapy, myotherapy, massage and the benefit of regular Chiropractic care to ensure that your spine is in line so that the nerves work freely and communicate to the brain more efficiently.
The reverse of SITTING is not to STAND, it is to STRETCH. To help with stretching, Damo has shared some of his favourite videos here:

Is Damo sensitive now that he has turned the big 5-0 or is he actually experiencing ageism?
With a 5 in front of his age AND a golf handicap of about 5, is he really too old for a golf tournament or is that blatant ageism?
In this week’s episode we question if ageism is actually a cancer on society or are we overly sensitive?
We know that people are living longer but dying slower. Is agesim and the limiting beliefs around ageing contributing to signing up for the slowest of deaths? Is an increasing number of candles on a birthday cake each year disempowering people when it comes to how they live their everyday life?
Age is not the problem. Ageism is. As David Bowie once said “ageing is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been”.
In this episode we discussed Damo’s Crack Your Stress Code. You can listen to the Series on episode 485 and episode 486.

We discuss cleanses, fasting and detoxes, and the onset of the mythical healing crisis that so many people create for themselves by chasing one trend after another.
Ideally you find this conversation somewhat liberating and feel less-inclined to fit a label or trend that is here one day, and gone the next!

Damo has a bone to pick with Marcus!
In Marcus’s Exceptional Life Blueprint he outlines 8 areas of life – Purpose, Movement, Social, Nutrition, Family, Growth, Wealth and Spirit.
Damo believes social and family should be combined into “People”.
Marcus shares how the energy of friends is very different to family, whilst Damo wants just 7 areas of life and not 8!

Damo has started the New Year with a BANG! Or more to the point, a “Pull Over” and “Stop Right There”!
No, Damo is not at Police Academy, but I did perform a quasi “citizens arrest” over Summer after watching an incident at his local golf club.
The story is entertaining and the lesson is powerful.
If we are to build stronger communities around us, we must hold each other to account.
The behaviour we walk past is the behaviour we accept.
So enjoy the story, and consider the lesson!

How many people do you know receive a congratulatory email from Andrea Bocelli and his wife when they complete a major achievement.
Well our next guest – who we are proud to welcome back to 100 Not Out – received that very letter from Veronica and Andrea Bocelli … because at 78 years young, Don Riddington and 5 Englishmen set a new Guinness World Record for the Oldest Relay Team to Swim the English Channel …
To be clear, they combined for a total age of 464 years NOT OUT, with an average age of 77.3 …
And of course punching above his weight at age 78 was 100 Not Out’s version of The Don ..
Cricket can have Don Bradman … 100 Not Out will claim Don Riddington as The Don, because after becoming Australia’s oldest man to swim the Channel at 68 back in 2013, he’s done it again at 78 with a bunch of mates!
This is an inspiring story to kick off 2024!

It is quite disgusting – and concerning – that research on slowing down biological ageing has descended to this.
You’re about to listen to us take the mickey out of the latest findings in slowing down biological ageing, which were presented to the American Heart Association (AMA).
Damo plays the role of research scientist and Marcus, well he dabbles in between AHA Chairman and heckler and host of the podcast!
In any case, we hope you see just how flawed the mainstream recommendations are on what it takes to live a great, long life.
Here’s just one article outlining this “groundbreaking” research.

We are both self-proclaimed Christmas lovers. Carols, christmas trees, the coming together of friends and family, and all that it means.
But that’s not the case for everyone. Financial stress and family friction are just two factors that see a lot of people dreading this time of the year.
Longevity cultures do special occasions in an extremely ceremonial manner. They are revered and treated with due respect. We touch on this in the context of our own upbringings on this Christmas edition of 100 Not Out.

Damo is 50! (Well not quite at time of recording but he is now that you’re listening!)
It was Damo turning 40 that had him say YES to starting the podcast 100 Not Out.
And now, all these years later – what does Damo have to say to the younger version of himself?
The answers may surprise you – we talk about the speed of life, the focus (or lack thereof) on movement, the amount of eating out we do in Australia, and the things we care – or stress – about.

Have certain members of the longevity movement lost their mind?!
We’re quite taken aback by Dave Asprey’s invitation to his community to undergo Gene Therapy in a bid to prolong life.
Follistain Gene Therapy to be exact, which he invites people to partake it at a cost of $US 25k.
We’re not joking, you can see it all here
It’s fair to say this approach to longevity – and gene therapy – completely goes against our ethos on 100 Not Out.
In the comments of his post on Instagram, Dave tells naysayers that they are undergoing gene therapy every time they eat hot chips, and so we are already doing it anyway. He references epigenetics – the environment that we place our genes in – as the key.
On that point we agree, however we take a more macro look at epigenetics, and reference our chat with Mimi Kirk on episode 11, where she took us through her family history, her genes, and her determination to live a lifestyle completely opposite to her family.

Such differences open the conversation of what a longevity diet looks like – and what it doesn’t.

And not only that, Damo’s angry that it’s been made so easy to replicate the diet local to the Nicoyans.

How did the world get so crazy busy again?
Were the hidden benefits of lockdowns lost on us? The slower lifestyle, the time to self and the ease of spending time with others in the household (forced upon us mind you) … are all seemingly distant memories.
Yes it was THE BEST to have our freedoms restored … but many of us (hosts included) have found it bizarre how busy has gone into overdrive … and it’s no longer easy to socialise, relax and have some down time.

Sarah Douglass-Norris is a former professional golfer who has refused to let life stop her from living her dreams.
Told by her employer she’d never make it as a pro golfer, she made it, travelling the world on the European tour and spending 7 years on the Austalian LPGA tour. After having kids, Douglass-Norris continued doing what she loves – playing golf, and helping other people play golf.
As a coach, Douglass-Norris has students from 4 years of age to 88 years of age!
And as an ambassador for the upcoming Australian Masters Games in October, she is a great example of not letting life – or others – stop you from doing what you love!

An article in Wired recently had the title “The Quest For Longevity is Already Over”.
We’re not so sure, for a number of reasons.
Jean-Marie Robine is a proclaimed longevity researcher, responsible for validating Jeanne Calment’s extraordinary 122 years and 164 days.
On episode 304 we discussed the reasons why we don’t think Jeanne Calment actually lived that long.
And on this occasion, we also don’t agree with Robine’s methods in focusing purely on super centenarians as a data point for assessing any “upper limits” in human lifespan.

Many people say “I’m not a runner”. Even Damo has said it before! Today we dig into this statement.
A few episodes ago – on Ep 518 we spoke to Jane Woodlands-Thompson, General Manager of the Australian Masters Games which takes place in Adelaide and the wider region this year in October …
We’re going to be chatting with participants and leaders of this event over the coming months, and one of them is an inspiring woman by the name of Anna Liptak.
Anna is an fitness coach, award-winning documentary creator (with I’m Not A Runner) and has spent more than 20+ years in the fitness game, helping people achieve remarkable health and fitness.
Anna herself has run over 30 full marathons and more than 100 half marathons … unbelievable!
She also trains everyday weekend warriors to run marathons all over the world, and she’ll be participating in this year’s Australian Masters Games.

On this episode we discuss our experiences reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.
Not only is it the best-selling book of 2022 (10 million copies to date), it prompts us to talk about the different ways we go about creating our habits.
Damo discusses the importance of healthy habits; Marcus loves the idea of 2-minute habits … and together we discuss how we both go about creating Atomic Habits in our daily lives.
This book is taking the world by storm, and it’s a great conversation to have in the context of creating a great, long life.

Marcus is a little obsessed with 7 year cycles and as Damo goes from 49 to 50 and Marcus approaches 42, the conversation turns to the changing nature of life views and behaviour as we get older.
Marcus loves this blog by Tom Monte which summarises the 7 year cycles, first created by Rudolf Steiner.
35 to 42 is characterised by Crisis and Questioning, whilst 42 to 49 is “soul searching and wonder”. 49 to 56 is “an ever-growing vision and understanding of life.”
Take a listen; this is a great framework by which to reflect on your life, and also one to look at the future with wonderment and enthusiasm as you continue to create your 100 Not Out lifestyle.

This is one of those conversations that we weren’t planning for but turned into one of the more powerful chats we think we’ve ever had on 100 Not Out.
We are talking about belonging … and how a lot of us don’t feel like we belong.
There are so many ways that belonging feels stronger – being appreciated, being acknowledged (I see you), being spoken about positively, being included, and more.
From having your name remembered to having little details about your life known about, this is SUCH an important conversation about a topic that doesn’t come up too much in conversation these days.

“How long can humans live for?” says one editor. “120 is too young. Can we find some research for 140? What about 180?” …
And yes, you’ll find “research” talking up the future of our longevity,
But are we ready for it – and do we really want it?
Whilst most people aren’t getting to 100, nor getting to 100 in good health, there is an untold story of social, emotional and mental challenge that a wildly increased longevity is yet to address.
Here’s the most recent bit of clickbait from The Daily Mail.

There’s movement at the station in the alternative medical solutions to statins for high cholesterol (which more than 1.5 million Aussies are diagnosed with).
Hailed as a game-changer, we discuss whether such “medical breakthroughs” do anything to change our behaviour, or just give humanity another reason to believe in a “magic pill”.
Do the true causes of high cholesterol ever get addressed, and how does the way we are “educated” by the media about such issues impact our behaviour?
We hope you enjoy this conversation on cholesterol, wonder drugs and media manipulation.

It seems that we have done a full 180 degree turn since the rise of COVID.
Where it once felt that people who had COVID were the sickest of the sick, many businesses are now expecting their team to work from home whilst they have COVID.
Where has our empathy for illness gone?
Has the word convalescence been removed from our dictionary and our behaviour?
Damo has COVID for the third time – and even though he has had plenty of support – we discuss how society’s behaviour has changed so much in a very short period of time.

Whilst many of us would like to go back in time for a few moments, techpreneur Bryan Johnson wants his organs – all of them – to return to their 18yo selves.
Click here to find out more.
Not only does he have a team of doctors to perform hundreds of procedures on him each year (some more invasive than others), he has an incredibly strict vegan diet (1977 calories to be exact) and a number of rituals to accompany his mission.
It’s not our cup of tea for how to make the rest of your life the best of your life, but that doesn’t mean Bryan shouldn’t be doing what he thinks is best for him.
What do you think? And how does this shake your views on what it takes to age gracefully?
You can email marcus@marcuspearce.com.au or damian@damiankristof.com with your response.
Thanks for your support over these 10 years!

Around 20% of the population live with or are impacted by arthritis.
What is it, why does it occur and how do we go about improving the health of our joints?
There are hundreds of arthritides (forms of arthritis), and today we focus on osteoarthritis (the most common form of arthritis).
From “wear and tear” to the undiagnosed and untreated incidents we’ve let develop over the years, we cover off all the major causes of osteoarthritis and discuss whether its genetic, lifestyle driven, stress-related and so much more.

Australian Masters Games General Manager Jane Woodlands-Thompson joins us on 100 Not Out as we discuss what it takes to defy the stereotype of ageing in Australia.
One of the biggest one-liners in society is around “slowing down” as we get older, but for the 10,000 legends who compete at the Australian Masters Games, they have no intention of slowing down at all.
Held from the 7-14 of October in Adelaide this year, the Australian Masters Games is an incredible showcase of everything 100 Not Out is about. Ticking the boxes of movement, social engagement, growth and purpose, we can’t wait to create a 100 Not Out team in the future and participate at such an incredible event.
For now, we highly recommend you put a friendship group together and join thousands of like-minded souls at the Australian Masters Games.

Part two of our fascinating conversation around chronic disease focuses on some of the limiting beliefs society has around ageing, genes, family history, and the quality of our future.
So many of us have been conditioned to believe there’s next to nothing we can do about our health because of the lives our parents lived.
On this episode we discuss how genes really work, how important our lifestyle is to those genes expressing themselves, and why if we don’t change our beliefs about fatalism and the ageing process, we simply end up on the stats that show 12+ years of morbidity.
This is a fiery episode of 100 Not Out, we hope you enjoy!

On this special two-part episode of 100 Not Out we explore the impact of chronic disease on longevity.
The statistical truth is that chronic disease in the modern advanced world is not enough to stop someone living a long-time.
But even with all the medication and treatment in the world, chronic disease creates a tidal wave of physical, financial, familial and emotional stress.
So what are the main causes of chronic disease, and how can we prevent it as we go about our lives?

So many people think Blue Zones and longevity and “Ageing well” is such a luxurious conversation …
Many people think longevity is a “wellness hack” you do by exercising, eating the latest diet and practicing mindfulness.
But when you consider how terrible the final 12+ years of life is for most people, it’s clear that longevity – and quality longevity – is not some luxury item, but an urgent life skill we must master.
On Ikaria, the locals experience 80% less dementia, 50% less cancer and 20% less heart disease.
Think of that for a moment. We go to Ikaria to experience how these people achieve these incredible results.
And why a life free from dementia, cancer and heart disease is within our grasp too.
Our group to Ikaria for this year’s 10Day Longevity Experience in June must be finalised by February 28. At the time of publishing this podcast we have 4 spaces left. For all the details and to apply to join us, visit www.100notout.com or email marcus@marcuspearce.com.au

Clare Bothman has not only lived through multiple wars (like all centenarians), she has witnessed the introduction of “town” water, electricity, television, telephones, mobile phone, the internet, and so much more.
It’s quite incredible when you consider how much change can take place in 100 years.
But most impressively is the way Clare has handled adversity in her life.
Having grieved for her first husband and all three siblings (who all died from cancer), Clare knows a thing or too about living with grace whilst going through tough times.
Enjoy this chat with another thriving centenarian in Clare Bothmann.

So this episode is like Love Languages and personalities for the everyday cook!
We also chat about how to cook for guests, how long leftovers last for and much much more!

Captain Christmas, also known as Damo, didn’t have the Christmas Day he expected.
And after some self-labelled “stinking thinking”, Damo shared his experiences and the importance of mental “flexibility” for when things don’t go to plan.
On episode 510 of 100 Not Out we talk about dealing with the unexpected, both in the short and long term, the difference between acute experiences and chronic conditions, and the way to navigate our days and lives when the unexpected comes our way.
It feels prophetic – hopefully not too much – but perhaps this episode needs to be kept in a safe place for when challenge comes our way.

If there’s a so-called “trend” that is here to stay my bet is it would be mushrooms. Not only because they’re more “normal” than kale but I think because they’re filled with an ancient wisdom that is hard to argue with and mushrooms seem to be a part of many longevity cultures – which of course we love on 100 Not Out.
Embarassingly, we’ve NEVER done a podcast on mushrooms … and being up here in the Byron Shire you can imagine that mushrooms have been all the rage up here for quite some time – long before they become a thing – and when you go to a cafe around here you can always ask for Mason’s Mushrooms to be added into your coffee.

Ageing is “in” according to Julia Fox (if you don’t know who she is, click here), and anti-ageing is OUT!
“Just to let you guys know, aging is fully in—like fully,” Fox said in a recent TikTok video.
“And if I see another project that says ‘anti-aging’ on the label, I’m suing. I’m going to sue because I’m gonna age regardless of if I put the fucking $500 serum on my face. And you all fucking know it, and we fucking know it, so let’s stop lying to ourselves. Getting old is fucking hot. It’s sexy. It’s probably the sexiest time in life, actually, because being pretty and hot in your twenties is the fucking trenches, okay? And I’m not going back there.”
So, whether you’re 32 (like Fox) or 22 or 42 or 92 … the idea which Fox promotes so well is to give up on the idea of “anti” ageing. Whilst we can all fall into the ideal of “looking” younger than we really are, trying to “stop” a process that is natural and unstoppable is bordering on the ridiculous (and let’s be honest, creates waves of anxiety across the globe).
