Brodie Sharpe has been a physiotherapist based in Australia for the last 10 years. Prior to this, during years of being an injured athlete, Brodie went on a journey to find the right information to actually get better. This meant cutting through a lot of the misinformation that persists in athletic communities. His search took him through his own vocational journey to helping people recover from their injuries. As he continued along this path he focused on helping injured runners with his own unique process. This separated him from the more typical career path that was paved before him.

As a way to reach more people and have a greater impact on the health and wellness of a broader running community, Brodie started his own clinic, his own podcast and his own online platform to give easy access to runners around the world.

Brodie and I take a journey down the more philosophical aspects of athletics, recovery, improvement and sustainable performance.

Well we made it back! It was far too long away.

This week I wanted to have a discussion with my wife about the ideas around Effectually Active. Is all of this stuff we are talking about just padding our egos and justifying our own selfish actions? That's what we try to figure out, and make a distinction between actions purely for ourselves, and whether or not that can actually help other people.

Where do you want to be in 20, 30 50 years from now? I think about that a lot as a guiding tool for the decisions that I am making today, and in this episode I walk through how I got there.

Apologies for the gap! I was unable to get an episode up last Thursday, but now we will be back to business as usual! Our system tends to reward only a couple things: how hard you work and how much money you make. To the exclusion of all other things, this praise of work has led to the praising of "pushing through" or "toughing it out" regardless of the situation. I felt like it should be a little more nuanced than this. I hope you enjoy this brief dive into the idea of quitting, and whether or not it can be beneficial.

More often than not when we look for solutions to our problems we assume that they must be complicated. Surely obvious solutions can't remedy everything? Well maybe not, but I have found that more often than not, the simplest solution is usually the most effective.

It sounds good, right? Living a balanced life, being a balanced person seem like pure motives and perhaps they are, but I want to discuss the word Balance this week, and see what it really means or what it looks like when you try to live this "balanced" life.

In a world of fiscal insecurity shines a light and his name is Aaron. Perhaps he has good genetic makeup on his side, but he has a unique money mindset that has always interested me. We take a dive into how he got to thinking about money the way he does and what it means to gain wealth. Is money just a number? Is it a burden? Join us as we explore these ideas and more in this weeks conversation

It's the conversation we never want to have. It's the conversation that can never be one, and yet it is one of the most important conversations we can engage in - but you have to do it right. Nathan Haug is a good friend and for our conversation, represents a concerned citizen who seeks to balance being informed with losing yourself down the rabbit hole of political agendas, policy and media. Nathan is an intelligent, involved individual who I think has come to learn some of the best methods of navigating a difficult political climate. We avoid perhaps the petty aspects of the topic, and try to take a birds eye view of how someone can possibly function in the conditions we are in. It was insightful and eye opening for myself and I hope it is for you!

Apologies in advance for the sound quality, I am not sure what the issue was with the setup this week.

Today I wanted to talk about a couple of life filters that can be rather unhelpful. We talk about some of the critical points in history that expectation and ego played a role, and hopefully how we can prevent using these systems in our life.

Eleise is a friend and fellow podcaster. She wears quite a few hats; avid cyclist, podcast host of the Endurance Nutrition Show and Active Transportation Engineer. She is excited to start making a change in our community! As we continue to grow we will need people like Eleise to make sure that streets are safe and accessible to people trying to get places by walking, biking or public transit. We sit down and discuss all of these topics and more. Sit back, relax and please enjoy our conversation.

Mackay is a friend and all around good guy. I wanted to sit down with him and pick his brain on how he got the way he is. No one is perfect, but Mackay has figured out a way to use imperfections to continue to improve, and find a good way to live, even when stuff isn't great. I wanted to capture a synthesis of many conversations we have had while suffering on bikes, and while talking into a mic isn't quite the same, I think we made good use of it anyway. Enjoy!

We are back without a miss! With excellent timing, our daughter arrived and we have been able to start to get in the groove of 2 kiddos.

This week I wanted to talk about challenges, and positing the idea that more often than not we are scared of something new and different, rather than a challenge itself.

Also, I found the source of the quote that I heard:

Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher born in 544 B.C. said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”

There was a lot of temptation to make a reference to the song Crossroads by Cream, but I surpassed the temptation short of the title of the episode. I hope you will enjoy the thoughts that I had this week concerning primarily a conversation that I had with my father.

Also here is the link to my newly formed Patreon! If you have some expendable cash, and enjoy the project, then I would really appreciate the support!

Forgive the lacking audio quality, but please enjoy the conversation I had with an excellent teacher and mentor in my life. Dustin is an excellent example of someone who views their role as a steward of knowledge rather than a gatekeeper. I hope it is as inspirational to those listening as it was to me!

Enjoy this episode with my wonderful guest and friend, Jessie. Someone who has intense first had experience of how addiction can turn a life upside down. Fortunately (for her, my and anyone listening) she was able to find recovery and form a completely new life that provides her with more meaning and joy than she ever thought possible. I hope that you enjoy this discussion as much as I did.

There are a lot of principles in business and economics like the 80/20 rule: You get 80% of your revenue from 20% of your customers. This can be quite the same in our lives. We may derive 80% of our joy from 20% of our habits. My thoughts this week were then, why not cut out the things that do not provide that same return and reinvest the time in the things that pay the highest yield.

As we move toward the final few hours of 2020, I wanted to share about what could help make the difference between success and failure. A lot of people focus on goals, and as we know a goal by itself is not a bad thing but it is also not the most powerful tool in the box. This week I talk about what the differences are between a Goal and a Just Cause, and why you should be using the latter as you strive for a better new year.

It is all well and good to talk about peace on earth and good will toward men, but sometimes people to really crappy stuff. Like having your car vandalized in broad daylight at a mall when you are celebrating your anniversary. Even when it sucks, it is still better to choose to forgive people.

No this is not going to be a new years resolution episode, I am not about that. We had a chance to take a step back and look at the world and our lives this year, I am hoping that I personally can take what I learned this year, and make 2021 even better. I wanted to share how I figured we could best make that happen!

The holidays can get away from us. Instead of the fun and joy that all of the movies and songs portray, this season can get pretty stressful. I found an excellent book that helps give perspective on the stress and distraction in our lives and helps us find peace. Titled Peace Is Every Step, Author Thich Nhat Hanh gives practical easy advice that everyone can use everyday to be present in our life.

This week I wanted to chat about history. It can be a good place to start, but It does not have to dictate the way we do things today, and it absolutely does not control our future tomorrows.

Join us as we discuss what it takes to be an effective advocate in a world that has become car dependent. Mary is the dedicated director of BikeWalk Provo, which is dedicated to making safer and more sustainable transportation options available to everyone. We cover a lot of ground but the good news is you don't need to be the director of a grassroots advocacy campaign to make things happen in your community.

We have many luxuries in life, but oftentimes, when it comes to the things that we are most invested in it is worth the investment in something that is going to last long and perform well. For those things that are less important, we need not invest the time or money. Let me know your thoughts on the contrast between these two distinctions

The other side of the coin from Episode 2. Rather than just looking at the "bright side" I wanted to take a look at what things are a constant little drag in everyday life that do not have to be. I think this can be a really effective way to open up time and space in your life. Come check it out!
