Pepsi Union wins collective bargaining agreement Puerto Rico Indymedia featured a story about a labor union at a Pepsi plant winning a new collective agreement. On March 9, 2015, members of the Trade Union Solidarity Movement representing 300 employees of a manufacturing plant that makes Pepsi products in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, fought off threats by management of eliminating worker rights and benefits amid a poor economy. The union was able to keep its jobs, raise wages, improve benefits, and increase employer contributions to employee health benefits. Teachers hold tech bus blockade in anti-gentrification protest San Francisco Indymedia featured a bus blockade organized by teachers against some of the most world's famous tech companies. Teachers at San Francisco bilingual public Fairmont Elementary School joined with the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project to block 3 private buses. In a feature dated February 6, 2015, "Buses from Google and Facebook were blocked, as [activists] protested the takeover of what had been four parking spots for teachers at the school by a tech bus stop. Teachers had not been consulted before their parking stops were privatized [in 2015]." Protester Claudia Tirade stated, "In this city, gentrification does not only mean being displaced from one's home, but also from public spaces and city infrastructure. Georgia prisoners go on hunger strike over harsh conditions Atlanta Indymedia featured a story about Georgia prisoners going on hunger strike over harsh prison conditions. The feature reprinted a letter attributed to prisoner Kelvin J. Stevenson, dated March 6, 2015, who recounts his actions and his reasons. Stevenson writes: "Prisoners are stripped of all personal property and placed in a single occupancy cell, with a roommate that has a toilet that has no inside flush valve, and forced to live 24 hours a day receiving half portion food trays, thus deliberately malnourishing the prisoners into submission. Any prisoner that files grievances to complain about the denial of outside exercise periods, cell sanitation, law library access, telephone and visitation access to family, the mice and spider infestation, are targeted by...administrators and subjected to assaults...and are sprayed with MK90 riot mace which is used to subdue attacking bears." The headline alludes to the two finalists, Cook County Commissioner Jesus [HAY-zoos] "Chuy" Garcia, and incumbent Rahm Emanuel. RECENT HEADLINES FROM THE WORLDWIDE INDYMEDIA NETWORK:
Spanish authorities raid anarchists' houses in multiple cities Argentina Indymedia featured a story about a coordinated attack by Spanish authorities against houses and anarchists’ homes in four cities in Spain. In the early morning hours of December 16, 2014, Spanish police and the Spanish civil guard raided houses in Madrid, Barcelona, and in the Spanish cities of Sabadell and Manresa, arresting eleven people, destroying and seizing computers, cellphones, community libraries, and furniture. The attack was given the code name “Operation Pandora”, and the feature described the attack, quoting in translation, as being “in the best style of a third-world military dictatorship.” An editorial describing the attack provided a rationale for the attack: “the state needs to distract the society with an enemy”, and the enemy in this case was anarchism. http://argentina.indymedia.org/archives/archive_by_id.php?id=8793...

RECENT HEADLINES FROM THE WORLDWIDE INDYMEDIA NETWORK:
Proposed Transatlantic Trade Treaty Looms Near Ireland Indymedia reported on a planned transatlantic free trade treaty. A feature dated, Nov. 26, 2014, reported on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, abbreviated “tee-tip”, and the treaty’s potential repercussions. Quoting one example: “In 2010 the US mining and gas company, Renco, managed to successfully avoid having to pay compensation to Peruvian locals who were harmed due to pollution by their companies by successfully using a provision of the Peru-US Trade Agreement. Not satisfied with avoiding having to pay compensation, the company has since demanded $800 million from the Peruvian government as they argue that one of the companies they own, Doe Run, was forced into bankruptcy due to an expensive pollution clean-up which the Peruvian government required Doe Run to conduct.” Such strong-arm tactics are bound to escalate on both sides of the Atlantic if the “tee-tip” treaty is allowed to go into effect. http://www.indymedia.ie/article/105130
Roundup of Indymedia Coverage of Michael Brown / Eric Garner Protests Independent Media Centers worldwide have chronicled some of the many protests locally regarding the Michael Brown and Eric Garner grand jury rulings in late 2014. Here is a sampling of the coverage. The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center reported on a “A diverse group -- representing campus and community, black, white and brown, young and old -- chanted, sang, shared poetry, and marched in a "circle of hope" between the Champaign County Courthouse and the Sheriff's office and county jail.” In Atlanta in August, three demonstrations took place, well before the outcome of the grand jury proceeding were released. At the first demonstration around 200 people rallied in Decatur Square with a group comprised of mostly African-American students and activists and others. At the second demonstration between 1,000 to 3,000 people marched, featured speeches, and ended with the crowd marching around Centennial Olympic Park. The third and final demonstration in August 2014 took place at West End Park with a group of about 300 blocking traffic and intersections along the way. Puerto Rico Indymedia reported on the grand jury decision, noting statistics on police brutality towards African-Americans, and protests taking place in the US. In Portland two Ferguson Solidarity marches took place, noting two activists were “singled…out” by police and arrested. Boston Indymedia reported on anti-police violence protesters that took over downtown Boston on Dec. 4, and a Ferguson Solidarity...

RECENT HEADLINES FROM THE WORLDWIDE INDYMEDIA NETWORK:
Mexicans protest the disappearance and massacre of 43 students calling for educational reform Argentina Indymedia reported on protests in Mexico decrying the disappearance and massacre of 43 students who were apparently killed for their work on educational reform. Many Mexican organizations said that, on September 26th, 2014, in the city of Iguala in the Mexican state of Guerrero, state and federal police carried out violent attacks against rural students, including a shooting attack against a school bus. Six students were killed and 43 students disappeared; on October 4th, 2014, the remains of 28 people were found in clandestine graves thanks to a tip from a confession by a police officer. The context of the killings, according to one Mexican sociologist, was “a systematic campaign of criminalization of social protest, particularly on the issue of education”, under the cover of police efforts to combat drug trafficking. The targeting of rural and peasant youth has been a main objective by local authorities. ON THE SHOW IN AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2014:
- ALI ABUNIMAH SPEAKS AT THE EVANSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY Ali Abunimah is a longtime Chicago activist and author of the recent book “The Battle for Justice in Palestine” -- a book involved in a controversy at the Evanston Public Library where Abunimah was scheduled to give a talk. According to event organizers, Abunimah’s talk was abruptly cancelled at the last minute because no pro-Israel speaker had been scheduled alongside Abunimah for purported balance. When word of the cancellation broke, a flurry of organizing and a storm of criticism on the internet followed. After just two days, the Evanston Public Library reversed its cancellation, and permitted Abunimah’s presentation to take place.
We’ll devote the entirety of this episode of From The Trenches to that presentation. The talk was about a newly published book, but Abunimah also spoke about the assault on Gaza in the summer of 2014 that went by the name Operation Protective Edge. That assault began after the book’s publication but the book also spoke about the situation in Gaza relevant to the assault.
