The MINDFULL podcast was started by Devon Herrera following a series of life-changing events. Naturally, to help piece things together, she brought in her best friend and sister, Darryan, who is still waiting on that Redd's Apple Ale sponsorship. Through tremendous growth, both individually and as sisters, the girls talk about balancing being an adult, mental health struggles, and really, whatever comes to mind on the given day, including profile photos on dating apps, all the trauma, or best 90's songs (Alanis Morissette... where are you at?!)If you're a listener that doesn't vibe with random thoughts or non-specific agendas, honestly, get outta here and go listen to Dax Shephard crush us all with his intelligence, wit, and charm. Our neurodivergence is on full display, a topic that has taken up a lot of air time since we last spoke, over seven months ago. It's not just neurodivergent, it's ADHD, it's RSD, it's trauma... all these new discoveries will be discussed in future episodes, which we'll attempt to better organize into a segment... we're learning.

Devon Herrera here - I usually write up the show notes for our podcasts - I kind of pride myself on the ability to summarize our conversations in a nice little blurb, but this one is very different.
For me, growing up in a small town (Prescott, Arizona) meant I didn't experience a lot of diversity, when it came to skin color at least. My experience with Mental Health diversity is another story... According to my memory, in high school we had a mere two black boys, and thus, I was ignorant about what has been coined 'the black struggle.'
Introducing George Floyd. I'll tell you one thing the news is good for - polarization... also passion... and rage - which was exactly what a 20-something white girl trying to avoid her own problems (me) binge-watched for days. I consumed it with disdain. How could our President have let this... I can't finish that question with sincerity - of course this happened. Of course the riots ensued, and our nation's divide strengthened, over hateful debates, about which BLM group mattered more.

As the clock strikes midnight on Devon's birthday and she's finished editing the first video podcast, recorded on an iPhone, while the Canons sit idly by, just watching our rookie mistakes, I can't help but be proud. Sure, of the fact that I've now written a blog, edited a video, uploaded said video, uploaded the podcast, and am now writing the summary, but mostly, for the reasons I'm doing it. In December, we sent the intention to create, so I'm staying up and starting my own orbital new year right, and I promise, I'll get better at this.

In our first edition of featuring guests, we chopped episode 14, added clips, lost files when editing, re-recorded... but that's enough complaining - it was all worth it as Director/ Film Maker, Adam Newacheck dropped some beautiful knowledge for the listeners hoping for some inspiration from a creator.

This week, Ian and Devon made it super difficult for themselves, not by their idea to feature a guest speaker, but in the execution. As such, you have one episode turned into two.
It's 7pm in California and a team's gotta make their way to AZ for the holidays, meaning, no more show notes. I know, y'all are so disappointed.
We start with our Weekly Recap - Devon & Ian visited The Huntington Library/ Art Museum/Botanical Gardens . Ian gave up gaming to really focus on being present with what he wants out of life, Devon's headache led to an eye-opening experience while watching Harmony Korine's The Beach Bum - which, Ian has decided is his favorite movie.

Recapping the week with an abundance of communal events, Devon and Ian discuss a premiere they attended, the pilates class that made literally every body part sore, their industry gigs, and... you know what, let's start a new sentence because there was a lot to recap.

Segueing right into the topic at hand - community - Ian talks about how he prioritized activities when seeking out community, while Devon prioritized people which would cultivate her experiences.
Being intentional about how you want your community to look sometimes only come through experiencing what you don't want, so the two practice 'hansei' which is to reflect on the past, learn from your mistakes, and do better moving forward.
Fact of the day - Animal Edition - dolphins were studied as war tools during the first Cold War. Both the US & Soviet Union studied the creatures for their sonar capabilities, but also trained them to detect mines, bring equipment to divers, and guard submarines... talk about building your own community.

The not-at-all-awaited hiatus has finally arrived!
The 'No ID - Why It Matters' podcast (which is the name you'll ultimately see on the cover art along with a sick photo that hasn't yet been taken) features THE Ian T. Segears - military, 8 years, and THE Devon Herrera - behavioral health, 10 years - as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in Los Angeles, as well as life in their minds (sick line) - I'm going to end this sentence now.
Ian and Devon (as if I'm not writing this) have now both departed from their long-lived jobs and are trying to listen to that inner voice calling them to a greater purpose, though often failing forward (mostly).
These enlightened chats happen on the magic couch (yeah it sounds weird, I hear it) and with their desire to create burning fiercer by the day, they thought it would be a crime for our 5 listeners not to hear it... at the very least, it's a diary for our future selves and that's just fun.

With the first episode since Devon's move to LA, the podcast has a title change, which was a decision made very mindfully. Eh, tried to smoothly slip it in there... (don't say the joke... don't say it)
In the return, Devon enlists the illustrious voice of one Ian Taylor Segears, to discuss who they're squadding up with for the zombie apocalypse, but not before providing their thoughts on virtual restaurants, which is sprinkled with the ever-pleasant unwrappings of a big-ass breakfast burrito.

Honestly, the episode title could include so many different points; Devon sat down with Vai Patri (not even going to try and spell out all six of her given names) to talk about her experience growing up as a young Indian girl and how much it differs from the standard American 'way.' They also discuss the stigma associated with a sexually transmitted disease and how that weighed heavily on Vai, along with additional stressors that came with her attempts to raise awareness. The conversation flowed naturally into education, mental health, self-advocacy, inner growth, and so much more.

Devon is headed to Los Angeles and after a sweaty day of moving in 105-degree weather, which included throwing up, searching every box for hand soap, and lugging what felt like 500-pound dressers up a flight of stairs, Darryan is settled (maybe) into her new place in Scottsdale.
With that, the girlies reminisced, talking about... well, to be honest, at the time this is being written, I have zero recollection of what was discussed and so, I'll be listening to the episode with y'all to find out.

The girls' first interview with a dude! Devon and Darryan had the pleasure of sitting with Parker Stewart; they talk about his acting desires, what he should change his name to (he should keep what he has), and most importantly, he opens up about his mental health struggles in a world which urges men to embrace anger and aggression. We applaud Parker for his vulnerability as well as his spot-on impressions (listen to the whole episode, people).
The girls took a week off for a much-needed vacation. Devon recaps her time in Miami in which she talks about kidnapping, seeing Zedd, and of course, how dairy tried to stand in her way yet again. Darryan talks about her staycation in which she dealt with a group of 16-year-olds raging in the room next store (cue mom rage).
