Planting seeds of truth, shining light into young lives that have known much darkness—however you want to think of it, there’s a great need for Christ-followers to open their hearts and homes to kids in the foster care system. In this episode, Mary Ann continues her conversation with Heidi Blake, who has fostered dozens of kids who might otherwise have had no place to go. Heidi offers practical information about how to become a foster parent and reminds us that this is a mission field Scripture admonishes us to remember and consider.

Luanne was traveling, so Mary Ann once again invited their friend, Kim Harrell, to join her on this episode. As a pastor's wife for many years, Kim has seen the messy and magnificent sides of, as she describes it, "God's Plan A" for believers -- the church. Mary Ann and Kim talk about what encourages and discourages church leaders and their families, and the joys of watching lives transformed by Christ.

Kim Harrell returns and joins Mary Ann for a conversation about Kim’s passion for world missions and how we can best communicate the hope-filled message of Christ both with folks abroad and in our everyday encounters.

Not only did God heal Kim’s heart from the ravages of sin, He even gave her several of the dearest desires of her heart, including the opportunity to be a wife, mom, and grandmother, and to go on dozens of mission trips all over the world.

Luanne is traveling, so in this episode, Mary Ann interviews her longtime friend and pastor's wife Kim Harrell, who shares how God radically changed her life when she was in her 20s. Kim is open about the fallout from her wild years as a party girl in high school and college, and the depression that resulted from that lifestyle and from two abortions she had during those years. This conversation sets the stage for next week's episode when Kim will share how God came in and made her a new creation in Christ.

Why, oh why, do we pray and then sometimes have to wait a long time before those prayers seem to be answered? As Mary Ann and Luanne discuss in this episode, there could a whole boatload of reasons why, but it’s never because God isn’t listening or has taken His eyes off of us and our circumstances.

One of the hardest things about waiting is that it feels like a waste of time. But it isn’t. While we’re waiting, God is working—maybe to change our circumstances, but always to mold us into the image of His Son. Be encouraged as Luanne and Mary Ann share some of the good things God is doing while we wait.

Nobody likes to wait, but life is full of it. Just about every major character in the Bible had to go through agonizing seasons of waiting, so we can’t expect to dodge that bullet. But waiting is also one of God’s favorite tool for molding us and as Mary Ann and Luanne discuss, we should embrace the changes God works in the waiting. We usually don't ... but we should.

Playing with a yo-yo is one thing; being a yo-yo is something else. As Mary Ann and Luanne continue looking at Psalm 42, a central theme emerges: when our emotions go into hyperdrive and we’re heading toward rock bottom, it’s crucial for us to tell ourselves the truth.

Feeling thirsty may feel uncomfortable, but it's a sign our body needs water. Spiritually speaking, there's only one "drink" that can truly satisfy our thirst, and that's Jesus, the "living water." In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann begin going verse by verse through Psalm 42 and share their own experiences with dry times and the satisfaction that comes only from a close relationship with God.

(NOTE: PLEASE FORGIVE THE AUDIO QUALITY ON THIS PARTICULAR RECORDING. WE KNOW IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE LISTENING TO A CHEAP TRANSISTOR RADIO IN 1965. NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED.) Does it seem like everyone else in the race is wayyyyyy ahead of you and there's no chance you can catch up? Luanne looks back to the 1972 Olympics to provide a great example of why our race is never hopeless as long as we don't quit. Mary Ann once again reminds us that if we keep doing the right thing--obeying God-- we'll end up where we're supposed to be, even if where we're supposed to be isn't quite like we imagined it would be.

You may not have run 100 miles, but as Luanne mentions in this episode, a friend of hers has and it's a great physical example of the kind of spiritual endurance Christ-followers need in order to finish the race God has called each of us to run. We'll be back with new episodes soon, but until then, enjoy (or re-enjoy) this episode featuring teacher, speaker and mom Heather Campbell, who lost her teenage son in a car accident. In this last of a three-part series, Heather, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about how true God's Word is, even in the hardest trials of life, and they discuss some very practical "do's and don'ts" for those trying to comfort grieving friends and family.

While Mary Ann and Luanne take a short break, this week they're re-posting the second part of their three-part series on grief. In our hardest, most emotionally painful moments and seasons, God is with us, speaking, comforting, manifesting His character and Word, and bringing life from death. These are the truths that guest Heather Campbell discusses with Mary Ann and Luanne in this episode. Heather, who lost her oldest son in a car accident, doesn’t sugarcoat her experience but she does share how, even as she walked through every parent’s worst nightmare, she had unquenchable hope.

As Mary Ann packs moving boxes and Luanne travels to visit family, this week they rewind and reshare one of the most popular episodes of "Unquenchable Hope." In this episode, the ladies talk with Heather Campbell, a teacher and speaker who lost her oldest son in a car accident. Remember that old commercial with the Budweiser Frogs where one of them tells the other, “Let it go, Louie … let it go”? Well, most of the time, that’s pretty good advice. As Mary Ann and Luanne discuss in this episode, if we’re going to shine like stars in this dark world, we need to respond the right way if someone offends us or ticks us off. If Dolly Parton did it, we can, too.

God has called each of us and given us gifts He wants to use, but when we try to hijack those callings and gifts, it doesn't work. But if we take our hands off, surrender to God, trust Him and refuse to quit, the rewards at the finish line are wonderful beyond our imagination.

Following up on last week’s episode about Mary Ann’s journey with her husband after he sustained a traumatic brain injury, she and Luanne begin talking about the many lessons God has taught and is teaching Mary Ann through this experience. It’s like coming up out of the “fog of war” and experiencing clear skies. That’s how Mary Ann describes knowing, hearing and living out our true identity as Christ-followers. In this episode, she and Luanne talk about more of the wonderful, freeing things God says about His children and how embracing those can drastically change our lives. (NOTE: I, Mary Ann, apologize that this episode was posted late. The dog didn't eat my homework. I just forgot. Go ahead and roll your eyes. I'm rolling mine, too. Good news, though: Luanne and I are planning to begin recording again next week, Lord willing. Might take an extra week to get that new episode edited and up, but it's coming, folks!)

In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann continue to talk about how important it is for us to remember who God says we are. From senior citizen discounts to TV shows about Appalachian marshals, Mary Ann continues to offer up her trademark weird analogies to illustrate the need for Christ-followers to reject all the lies the world tells us about our identity and embrace God's affirming, glorious truth. (NOTE: The ladies are continuing to rerun some of their favorite episodes while Mary Ann helps her husband recover from a traumatic brain injury. They hope to begin recording new episodes in the next few weeks.)

Do you feel like you’ve been adopted into a royal family, accepted by God and forgiven for all the ways you’re grieved Him? It can be a struggle for us to embrace and walk in the identity God says we have in Christ—an identity that is far more wonderful than all the other things we sometimes try to base our identity on. In this first part of a four-part episode about our identity in Christ, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about adoption, acceptance and forgiveness. Believe in it and walk in it, and your life will be forever changed.

What do a desperate widow, a prostitute, a bullied scaredy-cat, and prodigal son have in common? All these people experienced a miraculous, SUDDEN turnaround in their lives when God showed up and drastically changed things. As Luanne and Mary Ann discuss in this episode, because God is “no respecter of persons” He’s still able to change lives suddenly and profoundly today. (NOTE: The ladies are hoping to be able to record some new episodes again very soon, but while Mary Ann's husband is still recovering from a serious brain injury, they're sharing some of their past favorite episodes. As you listen to some of these reruns, remember: We don't always need a new word from God, but we always need a "now" word--one that speaks to our current needs and situations. Even though, as Mary Ann says in this episode, Moses could’ve been featured on “America’s Most Wanted,” God knew this fugitive had the right stuff to lead His people to the Promised land, so He spoke to Moses, gave him his marching orders, and the rest, as they say, is history. Moses is just one character Luanne and Mary Ann talk about in this episode as they remind us that because nothing is impossible with God, no situation or relationship in our lives is hopeless. (NOTE: The ladies are hoping to be able to record some new episodes again very soon, but while Mary Ann's husband is still recovering from a serious head injury, they're sharing some of their past favorite episodes. )

Do you believe that as you’re going about your daily life, God can SUDDENLY intervene and change everything? Well, He can, and the Bible is full of examples of Him doing just that. From the “famous” to the obscure, Luanne and Mary Ann are going to be talking about some of these people and their stories in this and the next few episodes. No situation is hopeless because God is alive! Even though Christmas is all about celebrating the “Light of the world,” Jesus Christ, it can also be a challenging, even dark, season for some. As Luanne and Mary Ann discuss in this episode, if we’ll use the powerful weapons Christ-followers have been given, we can defeat enemies like loneliness, stress and despair and allow the hope-filled light of Christ fill our hearts and minds. As Luanne says, “When darkness invades light, we’ve got a spiritual battle going on; when light invades darkness, we’ve got a spiritual victory going on.”

During the 400 years between the Old and New Testaments, God was silent. No prophets spoke His Word to His people. Crickets. But when the time was right, He broke that silence in a BIG way. First, John the Baptist—a miracle baby. Then Jesus, the “Sunrise from on high," came to this dark world. Join Luanne and Mary Ann as they prepare our hearts for Christmas, truly a holiday of hope.

Ever play a game called Fruit Ninja? Well, if you want to wait in line behind Mary Ann's grandkids to use her phone, you can. In Fruit Ninja, you’re challenged to slice and dice various kinds of fruit that fall down the screen at an alarming pace. You control the sword. There’s a lesson there. In the spiritual realm, God has given us a sword, too—the Bible, His Word—not just to know, but to USE in our battle against forces of evil that are as real as the chair you’re probably sitting in. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about the power of God’s Word and how we can be more effective “ninjas” as we engage in spiritual warfare.

What’s going on inside that noggin of yours? That’s an important question because the Bible says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Women, too, by the way.) Scary, huh? Well it doesn’t have to be. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about the “helmet of salvation,” the essential piece of the spiritual armor God has given us to protect our minds, and Luanne gets personal as she talks about how these principles helped her overcome deep discouragement in her life.

What if you discovered one day that not only was your ridiculously huge credit card debt all paid off, but so were all the other debts you owed? And not only that—someone actually deposited a trillion bucks in your account! Well, that’s exactly what happens spiritually when we accept the gift of salvation God offers us through faith in His Son, Jesus. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne discuss the “breastplate of righteousness,” an essential piece of the spiritual armor God gives His children.

Every day, hundreds of thoughts come knocking on the door of our minds. How do we know which ones to let in? It's a big deal because the thoughts we allow to move in play a huge role in determining what we do and who we become. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about the danger of lies, the freedom of truth ... and the futility of yelling at people on Facebook.

Forget to put on your belt and you’re liable to lose your britches. Forget to put on your spiritual “belt of truth” and you’re liable to lose something far more important. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann continue their discussion of spiritual warfare with a look at the first piece of the armor God has given us to fight spiritual battles: the belt of truth. And boy, do we ever need it these days! (Note: This is a rerun of an episode the ladies released last year. New episodes are coming soon!)

Mary Ann's husband continues to recover from a traumatic brain injury, so we're re-running some of our favorite episodes. In this one, you're sure to learn one thing: Mary Ann hates snakes. Don’t miss her story about an up-close encounter she had with a slithering, yucky serpent in her garage. (It may or may not involve her husband running naked across the lawn.) There’s a reason for all the snake talk: Luanne and Mary Ann begin their discussion of spiritual warfare with a look at where the war began and the nature of our enemy (and God’s)—that snake, Satan.

When it seems like we can’t hear from God or sense His presence, is it because He’s too busy or too big to care about our wee little stuff? (NO, IT’S NOT!!!!) In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann look at some lies we’re tempted to believe when we can’t sense God near and some reasons why perhaps God allows His kids to experience these “quiet” seasons. And Mary Ann speaks a little Greek again to remind you that you’re God’s poem. That’s right, His poem. And He doesn’t forget His poems.

As Mary Ann is with her husband while he recovers from a traumatic brain injury, we’re revisiting some of our most popular episodes. In this one, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about those distressing times when we desperately want to hear from God but He seems strangely silent. Does it mean He’s mad at us or can His silence mean something very different? In the course of discussing this heavy subject, the ladies also weigh in on whether God’s breath probably smells more like peppermint or spearmint (yeah, you read that right).

Mary Ann and Luanne wrap up their deep dive into the topic of hope by discussing the familiar promise of Romans 8:28, the enigmatic man in the Bible who waited 38 years beside a pool for healing, the danger of embracing victimhood, the stages of hopelessness, and how to dig ourselves out when we’re in that dark pit. (Baking cakes and eHarmony may have come up.)

While Mary Ann is by the bedside of her husband, who is hospitalized after a terrible accident, the ladies are reposting some of their favorite episodes from the past. In this one they discuss how we become emotionally attached to whatever we put our hope in, so we need to be sure to place our hope in the right things. Mary Ann and Luanne also share some heart-wrenching experiences that threatened to permanently steal their hope … but didn’t.

Many people swing to one extreme or another in their opinion about what God is like, but in order to have a healthy fear of God, we need to have an accurate, Biblical view of Him and His love for us. As Mary Ann and Luanne discuss in this episode, if we believe in Jesus Christ, God has given us the right to call him “Abba,” but He also commands and deserves the respect and honor that is rightfully His.

What does it mean to have a healthy fear of God? What’s an unhealthy fear of God? Why is this subject even important and relevant today? Those are some of the questions Mary Ann and Luanne tackle in this new series. And as the ladies emphatically repeat, it may seem counter- intuitive at first, but having a proper fear of God has everything to do with having unquenchable hope!

In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne wrap up their series about complaining with some healthy, joyful alternatives that will improve your mood and make you a lot more fun to be around. Would you keep doing something that was creating bad neural pathways in your brain, making your stomach fat and possibly taking years off your life? Well, that “something” is complaining and sadly, nearly all of us do it to some extent. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne discuss one of the big reasons why God takes grumbling so seriously: it’s really, really bad for us. The good news? There’s an antidote. Listen and find out what that is.

God loves us, but He sure doesn’t love to hear us complain. In fact, as Mary Ann and Luanne talk about in this first episode of a three-part series on complaining, the Israelites suffered some pretty awful consequences for their whining and grumbling. God may not send a bunch of snakes to bite us like He did the Hebrew complainers, but that doesn’t mean He takes it any less seriously. Why is it a big deal to God? Tune in and find out!

When we compare ourselves with others, it never leads anywhere good. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about the “evil cousins” of rejection and comparison and how all that really matters is that we each use the gifts God has given us and fulfill His calling on our lives. If we belong to Him, God’s acceptance is THE thing that can protect us when those “evil cousins” try to move into our minds and hearts.

In this second episode of their three-part series on dealing with rejection, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about the amazing favor of God and offer hope, straight from God’s Word, when it seems rejection has left us in a "small place" with no good options. Rejection hurts. Jesus experienced its sting and He can help us when we find ourselves forgotten, left out, snubbed, ignored, abandoned or even hated. Is it okay to “bother” God with the many decisions we face, even the small ones? Of course it is! But prayer isn’t the only resource God has given us as we seek to know His will. That’s what Mary Ann and her guest, Heidi Blake, discuss in this third and last episode in the series on finding the will of God. (Luanne will be back for the next series.)

We all make countless decisions every day—some big and some small. As we do that, how can we know what God wants us to do? In our hardest, most emotionally painful moments and seasons, God is with us, speaking, comforting, manifesting His character and Word, and bringing life from death. This is the message that Heather Campbell, who lost her oldest son in a car accident, discusses with Mary Ann and Luanne in this episode. Heather doesn’t sugarcoat her experience but she does share how, even as she walked through every parent’s worst nightmare, she had unquenchable hope.

There’s freedom in letting God be God in our lives. Freedom from pressure, from expectations, and from striving to be and do things God never asked us to be and do. That’s what Luanne and Mary Ann—two “reforming strivers”—discuss in this final episode of a three-part series on the subject of “striving.”

God offers us rest, so why do we sometimes feel like we’re stuck on a “Christian hamster wheel”? And how can we know the difference between unhealthy striving that leads to burn-out and good old hard work that is pleasing to God? That’s what Luanne and Mary Ann—two “reforming strivers”—discuss in this second part of a three-part series on the subject of “striving.”

Why is it so hard for most of us to follow God’s instruction to “be still (cease striving) and know that I am God”? That’s the subject Luanne and Mary Ann—two “reforming strivers”—tackle in this first part of a three-part series on the subject of “striving.” As the ladies point out, the opposite of striving isn’t laziness, it’s rest. Wonderful, peaceful, glorious rest.

In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne offer some ways to defuse and defeat the doubts that can shipwreck our faith and they reveal the “nuclear weapon” God has given us so we can win the battle of faith vs. doubt.

They nag us, torment us, sap our spiritual energy, and we all have to deal with them. So what do we do with doubts? That’s the subject Luanne and Mary Ann are tackling for the next three episodes. In this first one, the ladies talk about the how hard it can be to “walk on the water” when we put our faith in the facts we see, rather than in the TRUTH that God can do anything.

Moses is just one character Luanne and Mary Ann talk about in this episode as they remind us that because nothing is impossible with God, no situation or relationship in our lives is hopeless.

In fact, you’re tattooed on the palm of His hands!

Mary Ann and Luanne want to begin 2023 with a truth-filled BANG, so they’re rewinding and replaying an episode that was the first in a powerful series they did last summer called “To Tell the Truth.” After all, hope that doesn’t spring from truth isn’t hope at all. When we decide to pursue truth with all our hearts, it always leads us to Jesus, because He IS truth … and He’s the giver of the unquenchable hope we’re all looking for as this new year begins.

What does it mean that Jesus was the “last sacrifice”? Not just theologically, but personally? And what kind of response should it elicit from us? What did Jesus mean when He told us to deny ourselves and take up our crosses? That might sound like a bummer, but as Mary Ann and Luanne discuss in this episode, it’s actually the ticket to the best deal and most amazing life possible.

The Old Testament laws and instructions about sacrifices are a lot. They seem verrrry complicated and burdensome for those of us who are blessed to be looking back on them from this side of the cross of Christ. But as Luanne and Mary Ann discuss in this episode, there are some important things we can learn from all those Old Testament sacrifices, even if we are no longer required to do them in order for our sins to be covered. Best part? In looking at them, we see the amazing heart of God.

Let's face it, until we get to heaven, we Christ-followers are pretty much a bunch of cracked pots. Beloved by God, but cracked. BUT (get this), the way to avoid some of those "cracks" in our lives -- the sins, the mistakes, the regrets -- is to stay put when God, the Master Potter, has us in the kiln of adversity and refining. As Luanne and Mary Ann discuss in this episode, the unavoidable, uncomfortable, and even painful "fiery" times in our lives are part of God's process as He transforms us into vessels of honor. And even while He's refining us, He can still shine through the cracks in our lives.

God is the Potter and we’re the clay. We may not always know what He's doing, but He does, and if we'll rest in that fact, life becomes a whole lot more peaceful. As Luanne and Mary Ann discuss today, we absolutely need to stay on the Master Potter's wheel and trust that His skillful hands are shaping us into something useful and beautiful.

Slammed, pressed, poked, spun around, thrown in the oven—whew! It takes a lot for God to make us into the image of His Son, Jesus. But it’s so, so worth it! In this first episode of a new series, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about the rich allegory of God as the “master potter” shaping the clay (us). What does He have to work with? “Butt dust.” (Listen and you’ll understand.)

If your idea of “holiness” is big hair and a condescending countenance, you’ve got it wrong. Holiness actually equals happiness, as Mary Ann and Luanne discuss today. As the ladies wrap up their series on how God sees us and how we should see ourselves as His followers, they talk about what it means to be holy, loved by God, and a few other wonderful perks we receive when we follow Jesus.

It’s like coming up out of the “fog of war” and experiencing clear skies. That’s how Mary Ann describes knowing, hearing and living out our true identity as Christ-followers. In this episode, she and Luanne talk about more of the wonderful, freeing things God says about His children and how embracing those can change our lives.

In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann continue to talk about how important it is for us to remember who God says we are and to reject any voices that contradict Him. From senior citizen discounts to TV shows about Appalachian marshals to a mortician conducting a business conversation while dusting off a corpse in funeral home viewing room, Mary Ann offers up typically weird analogies to illustrate some of the principles related to our identity in Christ.

Do you feel like you’ve been adopted into a royal family? Accepted by God and forgiven for all the ways you’re grieved Him? It can be a struggle for us to really embrace and walk in the identity God says we have in Christ—an identity that is far more wonderful than all the other things we sometimes try to base our identity in. Things like, as Mary Ann talks about, what college sorority we belong to (small eye roll here). In this first part of a four-part episode about our identity in Christ, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about adoption, acceptance and forgiveness. Believe in it and walk in it, and your life may be forever changed.

And a glorious rap song may or may not have been birthed.

Rejection hurts. Jesus experienced its sting and He can help us when we find ourselves forgotten, left out, snubbed, ignored, abandoned or even hated. Luanne and Mary Ann begin a three-part series on how to handle the fiery dart of rejection with a discussion in this episode about the practicalities of “loosing the lies” and “binding the truth” when rejection causes us to “self-sabotage.”

While most of us don’t want to be thought of as “fruity,” Biblically speaking, it's exactly what our lives should be about. Not “fruity weird,” but “fruity Christlike.” As Mary Ann and Luanne wrap up their look at the first part of John 15, they talk about what it means to glorify God, “bear much fruit,” and experience the amazing love and joy Christ offers.

Is Jesus at the very center of your being and life, or have you made Him into “Velcro Jesus”—just sticking Him onto the rest of your busy life like a patch or a piece of jewelry? That’s one of the heavy-duty things Luanne and Mary Ann talk about in this episode as they continue their look at John 15.

Pruned if we do, pruned if we don’t. According to John 15, that’s what we’re signing up for when we become followers of Jesus. But as Mary Ann and Luanne talk about today, being pruned is a good thing and always brings more growth … even if it stings a little bit.

Can we hurt God so badly or run so far from Him that we can never come back? Based on Jesus’ parable about the “prodigal son,” which the ladies dissect in this episode, the answer to that question is a resounding “NO.” No matter what we’ve done or how badly we’ve blown it, the Father always watches and hopes to see us come up the drive towards home. And if we do, He’s ready to throw one heck of a party.

As the ladies continue their first-year highlights, in this episode they talk about the HUGE and practical importance of understanding and embracing Father God's love for us. It’s hard to imagine a more relevant topic than how to live fearlessly in a world that can be pretty scary and with news outlets that love throwing fuel on our fear fires. But as Luanne and Mary Ann discuss in this timely rerun episode, God has given us some wonderful examples in His Word of how to overcome the fears that try to paralyze us. It’s all about remembering Who’s in the boat with us.

Whew, boy, we sure do need to remember that whether it comes as a just-in-the-nick-of-time “mailbox miracle” or a steady, constant supply, God promises to meet our needs. The hard part? He meets it His way, in His timing. Because it's so relevant right now, Mary Ann and Luanne are re-airing this episode about Jehovah Jireh (the Lord will provide), the name of God revealed in the epic story of Abraham and Isaac on Mt. Moriah. And as the ladies discuss, God's provision goes way beyond just our financial needs. Open your eyes—there might just be a ram coming up the other side of the mountain for you.

When we were kids (we’re old-ish), summertime was rerun time on TV. Just about every show took a summer break. We’re not doing that, but we did want to repost an episode we aired months ago because we believe it’s a message we all need to hear again … and often. Our subject is the “shield of faith” Christ-followers are given to deflect the fiery darts constantly slung our way. Leave home without your “shield of faith” and you’re likely to get fried out there in the world. This episode was originally part of the series we called “Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God,” which is also the name of Luanne’s latest book. Take a listen, order Lu’s book and get armored up for the very real battle we’re in.

God’s Word is true, and the church should be all about telling the truth, but … well, sometimes that isn’t happening. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about some lies that have snuck into the chapels, sanctuaries, auditoriums, pulpits, pews and minds of Christians. And as always, the ladies remind us that there’s hope and forgiveness if we repent and get back on God’s path of truth, life and freedom.

Continuing their series on the importance of truth, in this episode Luanne and Mary Ann discuss two issues that may be draining truth and life from the church of Jesus Christ: watering down the Gospel and ignoring sexual sin among believers. Heavy topics, but certainly not without hope because, as the ladies emphasize, God offers forgiveness and restoration when we repent and return to His path.

Remember the old children’s fable called “The Emperor’s New Clothes” in which no one dared to tell the emperor that he was actually naked until a child finally spoke up and told him the truth? Well, that’s what Mary Ann and Luanne are trying to do in this episode as they discuss the foundational lies that have resulted in gender confusion, political and media corruption, and election fraud. Controversial? Yes. But as the ladies point out, there is no freedom where there is no truth.

What is the truth about abortion? What does God say about when life begins? Do the laws of our land about abortion—very much in the news right now—reflect God’s perspective? Statistically, why do the majority of women who get abortions choose that option? Is abortion an unforgivable sin? In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann tackle this relevant and difficult issue, an issue that affects millions of individuals as well as the soul of our nation as a whole. As the ladies point out, there is forgiveness and grace when we expose our wounds and shine God’s healing light on our sins.

Buckle up for this first episode of a no-holds-barred, tell-it-like-it-is series Luanne and Mary Ann are calling “To Tell the Truth.” If we want to withstand the category-five hurricane of lies pounding the shores of our brains every day, our lives need to be built on a deep, strong foundation of truth. Jesus told us plainly that God’s Word is truth and in this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about the clarity, peace, security and hope that come from trusting what God says about the issues of our day and not relying on loud voices like the news media or even our own emotions.

Have you ever been planning and really, really looking forward to an upcoming vacation to a place you’ve never been to before? You’re counting down the days and Googling all the hotels and sites you want to see. The anticipation makes all the days at work or at home with the kids seem more bearable. Christ-followers should live that way every single day because we have guaranteed reservations for an unimaginably glorious trip. Forget five-star resorts; heaven is a gazillion-star destination! So, as Luanne and Mary Ann remind us in this episode: Don’t. Give. Up. Just like Jesus did, for the joy set before us, let’s finish our race well. (Psssst: If we do, the Bible says we get crowns. Don’t know exactly what those are, but they’re bound to be good!)

(NOTE: PLEASE FORGIVE THE AUDIO QUALITY ON THIS ONE RECORDING. SORRY IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE LISTENING TO A CHEAP TRANSISTOR RADIO IN 1965. NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED.) Does it seem like everyone else in the race is wayyyyyy ahead of you and there's no chance you can catch up? Luanne looks back to the 1972 Olympics (no, she wasn't there) to provide a great example of why our race is never hopeless as long as we don't quit. Mary Ann once again reminds us that if we keep doing the right thing (obeying God), we'll end up where we're supposed to be, even if where we're supposed to be isn't quite like we imagined it would be. The ladies talk about several Bible heroes who felt like quitting at some point, but they didn't ... which is why they're Bible heroes and not Bible flakes. The Apostle Peter, for example, had pretty much given up when he suddenly spotted the risen Jesus on the beach. Not only did Jesus give Peter breakfast, He also gave him a new lease on life. And He can do the same for each of us. (The new lease; maybe not the breakfast).
Have you ever run 100 miles? Probably not. But some people do, including a lady Luanne knows personally. Now, that’s some crazy endurance. And once Mary Ann gets over the idea that humans can actually make themselves run that far, she and Luanne explore some reasons why Christ-followers may be tempted to give up during spiritual race God calls each of us to run. Let’s run with endurance the race set before us and finish well, to the glory of God! (And when we get to heaven we can ask Him why He didn't choose a different sports metaphor for our lives ... maybe something fun like tennis or golf!)

Guest Heidi Blake joins Mary Ann for the second part of their conversation about what it means to completely surrender to God. Without an understanding of God’s goodness and love, surrender can sound dismal, but as Heidi shares in her powerful testimony, there’s a whole bunch of freedom, relief and peace on God’s side of the fence. Luanne will be back next week, but many thanks to Heidi for her willingness to step in and remind us how powerful the Gospel really is.

Surrendering completely to God—as Christ-followers, we sing about it, read about it and talk about it, but actually DOING it, if you’ll excuse the bad grammar, ain’t no picnic. Although Luanne was up to her eyeballs in other commitments and couldn’t be part of this episode, Mary Ann talks with guest Heidi Blake about Heidi’s recent crisis of faith and how God called her to let go of an “idol” she was tightly gripping. Their conversation also highlights the importance of our friendships including some “iron sharpening iron” … even if it’s uncomfy and means the sparks will fly.

The Bible is LOADED with great promises for those who are willing to wait for God to do His thing and not impulsively run out ahead of Him. Easier said than done? For sure. But worth it? Absolutely! In this episode, Luanne, Mary Ann and guest Heidi Blake finish up their discussion about the Biblical admonition to wait on God and all the blessings that come our way when we put on the brakes and give God time and room to work.

Waiting may not feel good, but as Luanne, Mary Ann and guest Heidi Blake discuss in this episode, not waiting can end up feeling worse. The ladies share some of their regret stories about impulsive actions that cost them—from eating chocolate at night to buying a house to moving when the Holy Spirit was saying, “Stay.”

There are important things to be learned during those times when God is making us wait for answers and solutions from Him, but let’s face it, most of us hate to wait. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann, joined by guest Heidi Blake, share some of the things they’ve learned through tough seasons of waiting. And all three of the ladies agree: It’s important, it’s necessary, and it stinks.

Social media, the entertainment industry, and cultural trends have made parenting teenagers a challenge, but as the ladies discuss in this episode, it’s not impossible. God promises wisdom for those who seek it, so if you're a parent, youth leader, teacher, coach, or anyone who has a teen in your life, Luanne and Mary Ann pray that the experiences and knowledge they share will encourage you to swim upstream against the cultural current and inspire that teen in your life to do the same.
During her 17 years as a high school counselor, teacher and coach, Luanne gained much insight about how teens can successfully and Biblically deal with the sexual pressure in our culture. Both parents and teenagers can benefit greatly from the wisdom in Luanne’s two books (one for gals and one for guys): “Pure Lives” and “The Warrior Within.” They are available on her website (address below) and on amazon.com.
Luanne’s new book, “Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God,” is also available for order through her website and on amazon.com, as is Mary Ann’s book, “Live. Learn. Laugh!”

Satan is most definitely going to get his in the end, but until then, he takes great delight in taking something God created to be wonderful, beautiful and fun, and using it to cause pain, heartache, disease and guilt. That’s what our enemy—and God’s—has done with sex. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann continue discussing the importance of understanding and resisting the temptation to violate God’s boundaries, and the importance of teaching that to the next generation.

When people say “don’t,” sometimes their warnings are wrong or just ridiculous. But when God says “don’t,” it’s for our protection and we’d be wise to pay attention. Even, or maybe especially, when it comes to our sexuality. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne discuss the lying voices that try to lure teenagers (and all of us) into misusing one of God’s most precious gifts. God offers forgiveness and redemption when we fall, but isn’t it better to just do things His way? (Hint: The answer is YES!)

What’s up with all the “woke” and “cancel culture” stuff being pushed these days? Is it good or bad? Constructive or destructive? A necessary change or a distraction? Unafraid to go where angels fear to tread, Luanne and Mary Ann offer up their opinions on these cultural trends. Even if you don’t agree with the ladies, we hope you’ll applaud their chutzpah for tackling such a hot-button subject.

If a little girl taking refuge in a bathtub during a tornado knows God is bigger than the boogeyman, how come it’s often so hard for the rest of us to remember that? In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne discuss El Elyon, the name of God that means “God Most High.” Not kind of high, a little bit high, or almost as high as our problems, but MOST High. All the bigs, mosts, and bests. That’s our God! (And you're gonna love Luanne's story about her Disney slow globes -- cue "Twilight Zone" theme song.)

Facebook may say there are 58 genders, but Elohim—God our Creator—has said otherwise. Gender confusion is just one of many consequences that come from dismissing and denying this name of God. After Mary Ann gives Luanne a pop quiz, the ladies talk about the supreme importance of acknowledging Elohim as the artist responsible for all the beauty we see in the heavens, the earth … and in the mirror. And spoiler alert: The best is yet to come for those who follow Christ!

The bad news? The Bible says, “All we like sheep have gone astray.” The very, very good news? We have a Good Shepherd who takes care of us, comes looking for us if we go astray, and leads us to some very green pastures if we follow Him. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about all things sheep and about Jehovah Rohi, the name of God that means “The Lord My Shepherd.”

At your lowest, your highest, and during all the moments in between, God sees you. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about El Roi, the name of God that means “The God Who Sees.” (And if you get the Jetson’s theme song stuck in your head when you read or hear this name, you’re not alone.) Whether this reality distresses or delights you, it’s just a fact: God never takes His eyes off of you. In fact, you’re tattooed on the palm of His hands!

When you’re feeling bad, who do you call first? In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about a healer who’s on call 24/7, never gets a diagnosis wrong and get this—never sends you a bill. His name is Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. Since God calls Himself by that name, so can we, and He should be our first call, every time, no matter what ails us.
Here are the two books Mary Ann mentions in this podcast:
“Emotional Healing in 3 Easy Steps” by Praying Medic
“Winning the War In Your Mind” by Craig Groeschel

Whether it comes as a just-in-the-nick-of-time “mailbox miracle” or a steady, constant supply, God promises to meet our needs. The hard part? He meets it His way, in His timing. And sometimes that can make us uncomfy. In this episode Mary Ann and Luanne talk about Jehovah Jireh (the Lord will provide), the name of God revealed in the epic story of Abraham and Isaac on Mt. Moriah. And as the ladies discuss, God's provision goes way beyond just our financial needs. If you don't feel like God has provided for you, open your eyes—there might just be a ram coming up the other side of the mountain for you.

So, let’s slap the very best version of our resumés (no embellishing, you Millennials) down on the table and compare them to God’s. Did we create the stars and name them all? Did we carve out the Grand Canyon or build the Alps? Do we know the number of hairs on every human being’s head? Uh, no. So why do we think we can do a better job running our lives than He can? In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about El Shaddai, the name of God with an interesting literal meaning (many-breasted one) and a powerful practical meaning (the Almighty, All-Sufficient God). He’s the God who wants us to lean upon His chest and hear His heartbeat as He pours out love, wisdom and other good stuff on us. Got a situation that seems impossible? Call on El Shaddai. Nothing’s too hard for Him!

Most of us have probably done it. With our mouths we say to Jesus, “You are my Lord,” but our actions say, “You’re not the boss of me!” In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about Adonai, the name of God that means “master and lord.” Parting with earthly possessions, forgoing Caribbean vacations, choosing to do what is almost everyone’s greatest fear (public speaking)—the ladies share lots of personal stories that illustrate what it means to call Jesus “Adonai,” and the blessings and hope that come from obeying and trusting Him.

Most of us realize that real life isn’t a Hallmark movie, and that means Christmas can sometimes feel more like something to conquer or survive than the warm, fuzzy, joyous, oozing-with-love holiday we want and expect it to be. If we focus on that gap between our lofty expectations and reality, we’re likely to wrestle with some tough emotions. But in this episode Mary Ann and Luanne offer some practical advice about navigating this season and keeping the focus where it should be. If you want to dial up your joy meter, dial down your holiday-hoopla expectations, determine you’re going to be all about blessing and serving others, and take some time to think about and praise God for how He orchestrated the events of your life to bring you to Himself and rescue you from sin. THAT’s how you can have yourself a merry Christmas … and a merry life.

What kind of God would volunteer to be tempted like we are and to feel what we feel—the good, the bad and the ugly? Our God, that’s Who! As the ladies kick off a series on the names of God in the Bible, each of which gives us a glimpse of His amazing character, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about Immanuel--"God with us.” God has always wanted to be with His people and when Jesus came to live as a man on this fallen planet—Immanuel—He demonstrated that desire in a beautiful, glorious way.
Here are some of the Scripture references Mary Ann mentioned in this episode: Proverbs 18:10; Psalm 124:8 and 9:10; Isaiah 50:10 and 7:14; and Luke 1:78-79.

Boy, can Satan be very creative when he wants to mess up the life-giving, life-changing time we want and need to spend alone with God. He can—and we’re not making this up—even use a barking deer to distract and disturb us. Just ask Mary Ann about that. If you think you’re the only one who finds it hard to carve out time to spend with God in prayer and Bible reading, or to focus on God while you’re trying to commune with Him, you’re not. But since it’s essential for our spiritual health, former coaches Luanne (volleyball) and Mary Ann (tennis) will summon their old coaching skills to get you fired up about connecting with the One who promises that in His presence, we can find fullness of joy.

If the CREATOR OF EVERYTHING called you up, you’d probably answer (after you regained consciousness … and unless, like Mary Ann, you don’t answer calls from strange area codes). Well, guess what? God IS calling—all day, every day—because He wants to share His heart with you and for you to pour out your heart to Him. That time alone with God is essential if we’re going to grow and flourish in our faith, so why’s it such a struggle? Mary Ann says her house is quiet but her brain is noisy; Luanne says she desperately wants to get back to the days of yore when God regularly woke her up in the wee hours to spend time with Him. How about you? Is this a discipline you’ve mastered or a struggle? Either way, we all need to be reminded of this one amazing truth: God wants to spend time with us.
As promised, here’s the quote Mary Ann read from Bill Gaultiere:
“Continually Jesus withdrew from people, daily life activities, and the demands of his ministry to be alone with the Father and pray. Jesus’ solitude and silence is a major theme in the Gospels. His ongoing, intimate relationship with His Abba was the source of His compassion, wisdom, and power that we see on every page of the Gospels. ….. It’s how He began his ministry. It’s how He made important decisions. It’s how He dealt with troubling emotions like grief. It’s how He dealt with the constant demands of His ministry and cared for His soul. It’s how He taught His disciples. It’s how He prepared for important ministry events. It’s how He prepared for His death on the cross.”

You’re probably familiar with the story of the “prodigal son” in Luke 15. Whether we tend to be more like the reckless, selfish, broken younger son or his pouty, indignant, self-righteous big brother, one thing’s for sure: the father in this parable is AMAZING. As he looks down the road every day hoping to see his prodigal return home, that dad is a picture of our Heavenly Father and His everlasting, tender, extravagant love for each one of us. That was the message Jesus was trying to communicate in this powerful parable, and it’s the topic of today’s episode. Might want to have a box of Kleenex handy as you listen to this one.

Mary Ann says she may have “played orphan” when she was a kid (yeah, that’s weird), but there’s nothing fun about living as a spiritual orphan when we grow up. Not when God created us to live in His embrace as a daughter or son. He doesn’t force us to be part of His family, but as Mary Ann and Luanne discuss in this episode, there’s no better place to be than in His house as His beloved child. The ladies go through a revealing and powerful “checklist,” so get ready to get real and come home to the Father’s love.

Ever gone to the grocery store when you’re reallllllly hungry? Not pretty, is it? Everything looks good and you find yourself slinging things in that cart you’d never think of buying if your tummy was full. (Mongolian fire oil may or may not have been discussed.) That’s how many of us go through life as we try to satisfy the gnawing “love hunger” in our soul. God wants to fill that empty place. He is the perfect Father that even the best earthly father can’t be. Luanne and Mary Ann talk about their personal quest to know the Father heart of God and how much God longs to be “Abba” (Daddy) to His kids.

Ever play a game called Fruit Ninja? Well, if you want to wait in line behind her grandkids to use Mary Ann’s phone, you can.

Do you ever feel like a human dartboard? Like you’re constantly getting hit with the fiery darts the devil is slinging at you—darts like condemnation, failure, and discouragement? Well, in the immortal words of Captains Kirk and Picard of “Star Trek” fame, “Shields up!” In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann talk about the “shield of faith”—what it is (and isn’t) and how essential it is for our spiritual survival. But wait, there’s more! Did you know God is looking all over this world to find people to support and reward, and what He’s looking for is faith? Yep, and that's a huge reason to be hopeful in the midst of your battles. So why's Mary Ann talking about nerdy "Star Trek" stuff? Well, she's not a NERD, and it's NOT her fault. Find out why. And now, my friends, get your shields up. And as Capt. Picard would say, "Make it so."

Every day, hundreds of thoughts come knocking on the door of our minds. How do we know which ones to let in? It's a big deal because the thoughts we allow to move in play a huge role in determining what we do and become. In this episode, Mary Ann and Luanne talk about the danger of lies, the freedom of truth ... and how to avoid yelling at people on Facebook.

Forget to put on your belt and you’re liable to lose your britches. Forget to put on your spiritual “belt of truth” and you’re liable to lose something far more important. In this episode, Luanne and Mary Ann continue their discussion of the armor of God with a look at the first piece of the equipment God has given us to fight spiritual battles. Mary Ann gives a couple of modern-day examples of the lengths people are going to in order to dilute and distort truth. "Crazy" abounds so don’t leave home without your belt!

One thing you’ll learn for sure in this episode: Mary Ann hates snakes. Don’t miss her story about her recent up-close encounter with one. (Warning: This story may or may not involve Mary Ann's heroic husband running across the lawn in his birthday suit.) Luanne and Mary Ann begin their discussion of spiritual warfare with a look at where the war began and the nature of God's enemy (and ours): that snake, Satan. It’s important stuff because whether or not we’re aware of it, we’re living on a battlefield, and the side we choose will determine where we spend eternity. You definitely want to be on the winning side, and in this case, the ultimate outcome is certain: God wins.

When it seems like we can’t hear from God or sense His presence, is it because He’s too busy or too big to care about our wee little stuff? (Hint: NO, IT’S NOT!!!!) Luanne and Mary Ann finish their discussion on this topic by looking at some lies we’re tempted to believe when we can’t sense God near, as well as some actual reasons why perhaps God allows His kids to experience these “quiet” seasons. And Mary Ann speaks a little Greek again to remind you that you’re God’s poem. That’s right, His poem. And He doesn’t forget His poems.

When someone gives us the silent treatment, we usually assume we’ve done something to tick them off. But what about when it seems like God has gone silent? Does it always mean He’s mad, or can His silence mean something very different? Luanne and Mary Ann talk about this … and weigh in on whether God’s breath probably smells more like peppermint or spearmint. (Yeah, you read that right.)

Luanne gives us a sneak preview of her soon-to-be released book, Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God, and encourages us to put on two pieces of armor essential to fighting fear: the belt of truth and the “spiky sandals” of the Gospel of peace . By the way, if you've ever wondered (as Mary Ann has) if girls have "loins" to gird, you'll get your answer. The ladies also discuss three things that often cause us to live in fear: the desire to control, people-pleasing, and perfectionism. If one of those doesn’t step on your toes, you better look down and make sure you still have feet.

Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf? Lots of people, it seems. With mainstream media constantly stoking the flames of fear, it’s more important than ever to know how to experience the supernatural peace God offers—the kind of peace that allowed Jesus to snooze in a boat in the midst of a raging storm. (By the way, do you wonder, like Mary Ann does, why those apostles didn’t wake Jesus up before the waves got quite so big and scary??) Join Mary Ann and Luanne as they discuss how to fight fear in a culture that seems addicted to it. Plus, you’ll get to hear Luanne sing! Only for about 10 seconds, but she definitely sings—and sings well, too—to remind us that fear doesn’t stand a chance when we stand in the love of God.

Luanne and Mary Ann wrap up their deep dive into the topic of hope by discussing the familiar promise of Romans 8:28 and how it’s like baking a cake (?), the enigmatic man in the Bible who waited 38 years beside a pool for healing, the danger of embracing victimhood, the stages of hopelessness, and how to dig ourselves out when we’re in that dark pit. And eHarmony may or may not have come up. Just sayin’.

Did you know we become emotionally attached to whatever we put our hope in? Yep. That's why we need to be sure we put it in the right place. Mary Ann and Luanne talk about that and share some heart-wrenching experiences that threatened to permanently steal their hope … but didn’t.

Luanne and Mary Ann explain how and why this out-of-nowhere podcast idea was hatched, and talk about how to hang on to hope even when a tornado (a literal one, in Mary Ann's case) plows through your life. They also discuss the power of gratitude and how all the good feels, including hope, begin with simply trusting God. And, oh yeah, Mary Ann speaks a little Greek (opa!) to remind you that God’s timing is both personal and perfect.
