Can multiculturalism truly shape the identity of a region? Join us as Sonia Nolan welcomes Karla Benitez, a dedicated advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse communities, to explore the vibrant tapestry and challenges of multicultural life in Western Australia.

Karla shares her compelling journey from Mexico to Australia and her impactful work with the Multicultural Labor Organisation. Together, we reflect on the significance of multicultural input in shaping Western Australia’s identity, and the essential efforts needed to ensure representation and inclusion across all facets of society.

Boldly addressing the intersection of gender and cultural diversity, Karla recounts her early political career in Mexico, marked by gender discrimination and harassment, and her subsequent challenges as a skilled migrant in Australia. Despite initially working in aged care, her passion for politics remained undeterred. Listen as she discusses her advocacy for better representation of culturally and linguistically diverse communities and the collective empowerment that strengthens Australia's social and economic fabric.

This episode is a testament to the power of diversity, unity, and the ways individual stories contribute to a richer, more inclusive Australian society.

Witness the strength of the human spirit through Olga Hurina's eyes, a Ukrainian humanitarian entrant whose life took a dramatic turn when war forced her from her homeland to the unfamiliar shores of Perth, Australia. Leaving behind her husband and a career in public service, Olga's story is one of resilience and hope. Amidst the backdrop of the ongoing Ukrainian crisis, she shares her emotional journey, the challenges of adapting to a whole new world, and how she's now contributing to her new community while reaching back to aid those in Ukraine.

Our conversation with Olga culminates in a broader discussion about displacement and the strength required to rebuild a life from the ground up. We hear about the impact of war on infrastructure and the daily struggle for normalcy, while celebrating the remarkable strides Olga has made towards establishing her independence in Australia.

Her tale is a profound reminder of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, paying tribute to the resilience of displaced individuals globally and the unquenchable human spirit to chart a course toward a more hopeful tomorrow.

Imagine being captivated by a voice that weaves humor and vulnerability into a tapestry of tales, drawing you into the very heart of storytelling. That's precisely what Andrea Gibbs, a storyteller extraordinaire, does as our guest. As she unravels the intricacies of performance, from the raw exposure of acting to the subtle rhythms of narrative comedy, we explore how each story, whether whispered in a theatre or laughed over at a comedy club, forges connections that ripple through our lives.

Andrea takes us into her world where humor and hardship dance in the delicate balance of storytelling. Through tales of personal challenges and career highs, such as captivating audiences alongside Cate Blanchett, she reveals the resilience it takes to not only succeed but also to genuinely impact others. The art of crafting stories, Andrea shows us, lies not in grandeur but in the authenticity and relatable moments that resonate on a universal frequency.

In the ever-unpredictable arena of the arts, Andrea Gibbs stands as a beacon of hope and adaptability. From the profound connection made with a delivery guy in a Love Actually styled encounter, to hosting WA's most authentic and unique storytelling event, Barefaced Stories, Andrea's narratives are a testament to the transformational power of storytelling. Join us around the warm table, and let Andrea's journey of creativity, change, and the pursuit of passion inspire you to see the extraordinary in the everyday and the strength in sharing your own story.

Welcome to Season 3 of My Warm Table.

I’m so delighted that you’ve joined us again for more smart conversations with heart around a warm table of acceptance, curiosity and empathy.

This Season, which is our third, we are focussing on HOPE.

The world is a crazy place right now, and I believe we all need to channel the power of hope into our days.

What is hope?

What does it mean for you?

Does it drive people differently? And what situations and life challenges have people found themselves in that they drew on hope, among many other emotions and motivators.

We’ll be exploring all this around the warm table in Season 3.

I hope you will join us around the warm table.

In this episode we stop a moment to think about how we are so connected to electricity.

We’re going to honour the courageous and skillful men who climbed heights without fear to assemble and construct those tall steel structures which look like mini Eiffel Towers across our Australian landscape.

We’re going to step back in time to 1951 when the Australian branch of an Italian company set up in Australia to connect our vast, remote country to a reliable electricity source which enables a future of possibility and prosperity.

Electric Power Transmission Pty Ltd or EPT - was that company.

EPT holds an important chapter in Australia’s story. The story of migrants making their way in a new land. The story of connecting Australia across a remarkable and unforgiving landscape. The story of powering Australia into prosperity – signalling the start of industry, new jobs and new economic opportunities.

The EPT story brought the 1956 Olympics to our TV screens, it linked Carnarvon to the NASA space program and it was a pioneer of WA’s industrial future underpinning Alcoa, BP, Hamersley Iron and even the North West Shelf.

EPT turned on the lights for Australia, so it’s only fair that we should shine a little light on it today. To help tell this story, I’m joined by Matthew Quomi around the warm table. Matthew’s father worked for EPT and this paternal legacy inspired Matthew, an architect and passionate historian, to research and write a book about EPT and its communities.

Matthew has spent the last few years sharing warm tables across Australia piecing together the history of EPT with the pioneers of Australia’s energy legacy – migrant men now aged in their 70s and 80s.

We are in what scientists call the 6th mass extinction with wildlife disappearing at a rate of 1000 times the natural extinction rate.

Today’s warm table conversation is a big one.

We share tears and fears with Donalea Patman who, 12 years ago, locked eyes with a lion - one of the world’s most majestic and revered creatures – and from that moment she has dedicated her career to ending the cruel and barbaric industry of canned hunting, followed by the closing of the domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn in Australia and worked on modernising the legal trade in endangered species (one of the key drivers of extinction).

Season 2 of My Warm Table Podcast is amplifying people of passion and purpose. Donalea has to be one of the most passionate and purposeful people I’ve met. She sold her house and started a charity called For the Love of Wildlife (FLOW) which is dedicated to restoring the essential connection between all living things to bring our planet back to balance.

She is changing the world and for her work she was the proud recipient of the Animal Action Award, International Fund for Animal Welfare ad was named in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday honours list and awarded an Order of Australia Media for her work for animal welfare.

Donalea is a Freo girl at heart and after shining a spotlight on the global issue of canned hunting and predator breeding, she is now turning her vast energy and wisdom to rewilding WA. Partnering with Quenda Ecologics to build autonomous rovers that mimic what marsupials did in rural Australia before they disappered. This ambitious and unique project aims to regenerate degraded WA landscapes at scale.

So grab a cup of tea and join us around the warm table. Prepare to be outraged… and educated ….and also deeply inspired by Donalea and the work she is doing for mother earth, for our future and For the Love of Wildlife.

The number of trucks on WA roads is set to double within the decade and triple by 2050. In fact we'd all come to a stop if it wasn’t for the work of our amazing truck drivers carting everything from milk to machinery across our vast state.

So it’s really important as drivers that we know how to share our roads safely with trucks.

Rob Sharpe of Transafe and InsTRUCKta! has traversed more than 1.4 million kms as a truckie and he’s had a birds eye view of more than his fair share of close calls and crazy risk taking, by cars trying to squeeze their way ahead of a truck.

So it’s no wonder that he is a huge advocate for road safety.

Transafe WA is a not for profit organisation and Instrucka is its big purple semi-trailer decked out with virtual reality simulations and engaging tools to teach young and old how to interact safely with trucks.

One of the greatest ways we can channel our passions for purpose is through volunteering. It’s good for civic society, it’s good for our local clubs, and research tells us that volunteering even increases our sense of wellbeing.

Today I’m joined around the Warm Table by Craig Spencer – who has volunteered most of his adult life and knows better than most the importance of giving things a go and getting involved.

As Head of Community Engagement at Bankwest some years ago, he was among those who spearheaded the movement in corporate volunteering and today he manages more than 900 volunteers through his role as Volunteer Manager for St John Ambulance in the Wheatbelt.

He’s also a Board member of Volunteering WA and Chair of the State Government’s Volunteer Reference Group….

And he’s a volunteer firefighter in his community – which makes him passionate about ensuring each of us has a fire plan for our homes and family and he’ll give us some tips on just how we can do that.

Jenny Baraga is a pioneer of Aboriginal mental health practice and training in Western Australia’s north west region.

Jenny describes herself as a quiet achiever. She is a trusted voice, an experienced health practitioner and a proud Garra Yarra woman with a compelling story about the importance of taking the time to have a yarn and show cultural respect to people – especially when they are at their most vulnerable.

During our warm table conversation Jenny also shared the legend of a painting she created some years ago which tells her family’s story of loss and pain and the legacy of being part of the stolen generation.

As Australians we have much to listen and learn about the stories and experiences of First Nations people, so it’s a privilege to be able to amplify the knowledge and wisdom of our warm table guest Jennifer Baraga.

I’m sneaking in this live and raw episode of My Warm Table recorded on 28 March 2023 with Season 1 guest Sister of Mercy Anne Tormey.

I had the privilege of hosting a conversation with Sr Anne during the 25 year reunion of the Catherine McAuley Developing Women in Leadership and Service Award.

We celebrated this milestone in the olive grove at MercyCare Wembley - a foundation sponsor of the Award Program.  Speakers on the night included Award co-founder Elena Douglas, convenor Rosa Speranza and our evening’s MC Jenni Del Marco.

I’m sharing this conversation with Sr Anne for all the Catherine McAuley Award women who couldn’t be there at the event and for the My Warm Table podcast listeners who enjoyed the deep wisdom and encouragement from Sr Anne last season.

Enjoy this live recording and raw episode!

Catherine Kolomyjec is studying at Stanford University’s Centre for Compassion and Altruism Research to become a Global Ambassador for Applied Compassion. She talks to us about her journey in social work, helping to resettle Bosnian refugees in Norway, sending hundreds of postcards to stranded sailors off the coast of WA during COVID lockdown and many more inspiring acts of kindness.

Our table is set for a smart conversation with heart about kindness and compassion. These are core values of this podcast and so I’m delighted to be joined by Catherine - Perth’s own kindness guru - who is spending every one of her micro moments connecting people and encouraging acts of kindness to create a more compassionate society. She tells us it’s good for our heart and our brains … and our world. “The definition of compassion is a deliberate decision to lean into another person’s suffering and a commitment to doing something about it.” – Catherine Kolomyjec

“Because if we don't have a crack and take a bit of a risk and try something different and fail and learn from that in the way we operate ourselves, how can we possibly expect people who we're supporting to go through rehabilitation related to their brain injury to do exactly that? Mark Berridge is an author, speaker and lived adversity expert talking about his book A Fraction Stronger. It’s a book Mark never imagined he would write. Mark’s high powered corporate career came to an abrupt end in March 2019 following a very serious cycling accident. It fractured his identity and triggered a personal battle to regain his mobility and reimagine a different life with new meaning.

A Fraction Stronger is an inspirational book about facing adversity with a positive spirit, intentional actions and a can-do attitude. It’s a blueprint on how we can embrace uncertainty and liberate possibility.

After an idyllic childhood in Western Australia Mark now lives in Brisbane and this conversation was recorded over the internet. Our warm table experience extended to a cup of tea across the ether! “But sometimes the pathway is broken, and it's dark, and it's hard. And it doesn't have to have light only from above, it can have light from below. And that was what was really making me think about this idea of embers, the coals and the fire, the stuff that might help you find that pathway.” – Mark Berridge You’ll hear:
