"Wrinkles will go where the smiles have been."

-- Jimmy buffet

***Welcome to part two of my

Face Yoga series.

Today I'll be getting under the skin, looking at how it is made up, and exploring how our skin ages. There is also a brief face yoga routine focusing on the main areas where ageing first occurs. Please be sure to follow along.***

The Skin The skin is the largest organ of the body that is made up of water, proteins, fats, and minerals. There are muscles in the face just like the body, that help us to contract and move areas of our face to create what we call facial expressions. These muscles in the face are similar to the rest of the body, but these muscles, help to move the skin, not joints. For example the skin around our eyes, nose, and mouth.

Do you sometimes look in the mirror and wonder who is that person looking back at you? That ageing you?

I do, sometimes! There are days when I have a more youthful look than others. Lack of sleep, dehydration, and lack of physical activities sometimes make me look haggard because the absence of these reduces the flow of oxygen to my face.

It's just like after washing your hair.

Do you ever notice how revived your face looks too? This is because the massaging of the scalp and the water opens the pores and improves the circulation of blood in the head; This causes the face to look brighter and vibrant.

There is more to ageing though!

We cannot defy gravity and ageing is inevitable, but research has shown that the main cause of ageing skin, is a result of loss of fat. This I will explain below by discussing the different layers of the skin.

The skin is made up of three (3) layers; I like to think of it like a fruit - the outer, middle and inner parts.

First Layer is the Epidermis:

This is the area of your face that you touch and feel with your hands; known as the epidermis of the skin. This area of the skin is very sensitive and should be protected because it helps to prevent the body from absorbing harsh chemicals from pollution in the air. It also helps the body to retain moisture and produces a natural protective oil for the skin.

``` 💡 My tip for ways we can protect the layer of our skins to prevent premature ageing would be to, avoid the use of harsh chemicals for cleaning and moisturing that skin, and also, to apply gentle touch with clean hands to the face at all times. Also, wear protective skincare for harsh elements such as the sun, strong winds, and snow.
```

Second Layer is the Dermis:

This is the layer that is very important because it's made up of two very important proteins, namely collagen, and elastin. As we age, our body's ability to produce these reduces, and this is where face yoga can help to keep the nerves and connective tissues of the face stronger and more intact.

This area of the body also regulates our body temperature and our sweat glands.

Therefore, it's important that we maintain the skin by strengthening and toning to improve the flexibility and elasticity, and strength of the skin.

``` 💡 My tip to protecting this layer of the skin, is to keep as hydrated as possible. Replenish the body with fluids and vitamins and minerals. Also finding ways to strengthen the skin with exercises such as those in face yoga.
```

Third and deepest layer of the skin:

This is known as the Subcutaneous layer, which I like to think of as the padding to protect the bones, nerve endings, and skin of the fat. The reason is simply that this layer is made up of mainly fat. No one likes to hear fat, however, fat plays an important role in the skin's vitality, elasticity, and youthful look. I like to think of the fat under my skin as cushioning to protect the bones. When we lose lat from our face (something that happens naturally from ageing), we look older, because, without the fat, the skin becomes saggy and loose.

``` 💡 My tip is that most of the ageing happens in the second layer, so if we keep those )the collagen, elastin, and cell production healthy, then we will not have to worry too much about this third deepest layer, because the body will be better able to maintain it naturally.
```

Face Yoga (see video demonstration and tutorial) Why you should try it, part 1 of my series tells you about the benefits to be gained from practicing facial yoga. This post highlighted that face yoga is for wellbeing and inner self, not just physical appearance, and also, that poor posture can cause inefficient breathing and tiredness.

Some of the most important things to remember when doing facial yoga exercises are, proper posture and proper breathing.

  • Proper posture:

We tend to slouch and hold onto tension in our bodies unconsciously, that over time can affect other common roles such as breathing. It is important, whether doing face yoga in a seating or standing position, that our body is well aligned - neck in line with shoulders, and chin up with an elongated neck.

Your head should be level and upright, as if there's an imaginary string holding it upright. This is a good posture to support the neck.

  • Proper breathing:

Taking deep breaths produces more oxygen in the body. With face yoga, deep breathing is done from the belly (diaphragm) and we inhale and exhale through the nose, not the mouth.

Relaxed Square Shoulders, relaxed face, relaxed eyes, relaxed mouth.

  • Clean hands:

Facial yoga does not require any additional product, however feel free to use a serum if you would like. The main important thing is that we practice with clean hands, as there will be gentle touching of the face such as eyes, mouth, and nose, that could spread germs and bacteria.

This you will observe and engage in while watching and following the instructions and face yoga routine in my attached video.

Please note, that this is a basic video especially focusing on the skin and the muscles of the face. In the video, you will see some simple and effective exercises mainly for the orbital muscles (associated with the eye socket), the oral muscles (around the mouth, the forehead, and the jawline.

In essence, as the quote by Jimmy Buffet above says, "Wrinkles will go where smiles have been."

This is exactly how the formation of wrinkles occurs. There are two types of wrinkles:

  1. Dynamic (I hate to think that wrinkles are dynamic) - these for example occur when we smile or frown. So they appear when one of these such actions is done.
  2. Static: these are when the lines and wrinkles occur as we age, due to less collagen and elastin formation. Great example, the laugh lies around our mouth.

My static wrinkles are fairly prominent, but that I would never change, simply because I have had lots of happy and pleasing encounters through my journey that have given me much laughter.

🙏 I thank you so much for reading this all the way to the end.

I am an active yogi, and I am currently studying and practicing face yoga, and I'm optimistic that with consistent and continual practice I will gain more benefits, as research has shown that Facial Yoga is most beneficial for the age group of persons 50 years and over.

Please feel free to comment, and I hope you will enjoy the video and gain benefits from the moves too:)

We all have the go-to meals that make us feel good, right?

Well, spicy scrumptious Chicken Wings made with love, is just the perfect happy meal for my husband and I.

There's just that satisfying feeling of having tender juicy chicken wings ~~in~~ our my mouth. Could it be the feel of the meat on the bone? Is it the size of the wing compared to other parts of the chicken? Or is it the look of it?

Whatever it is, these wings sure make us wanna fly.

Just like the lyrics of "Regine Valasquez"

..." *Together flying high

Flying high upon

The wings of love"*

My chicken wings are fiery, herbaceous, and tender. With oozing juices, so there's no need to add a dip. The marinade infused in the chicken makes these chicken wings lip-smacking, finger-licking good.

Speaking of licking...These wings are the perfect Valentine's treat! I love simple meals that are delicious, and my chicken wings were the first cooked meal that my husband and I enjoyed in the early stage of us dating; So this is just one of many simple little things that bring back precious memories, and make us celebrate each our time eating them.

What makes my Wings of Love: I cook my meals with available spices, so although the taste is always different, they are always guaranteed to be exceptional; simply because they're cooked with love and diligence.

  • 1 kg Chicken Wings
  • 6 gloves garlic, minced
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 tbsp All Purpose Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Chicken Seasoning
  • 3 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 2 tbsp hot Pepper Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Wholegrain Mustard
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Pimento Seeds
  • Chilli Flakes (to suit taste)
  • Black Pepper (to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Dried Mixed Herbs (to taste)
  • Dried Basil (to taste)
  • 4 Irish Potatoes (wedged) Remove skin if you like
  • Neat Vinegar (optional)
  • 1 lemon (optional)

**Other suitable herbs: rosemary, thyme, or herbs de province.

Method (see video also) Step one

  • Rinse Chicken Wings with vinegar or lemon if you prefer (vinegar was used today)
  • Pat dry Chicken with Paper towel

I like to season my meat in layers, so I add each ingredient separately instead of mixing them all together and coating it, especially at the start.

  • Add salt, black pepper and chilli flakes
  • Add All Purpose seasoning
  • Mix ingredients to coat chicken

I particularly like this All Purpose Seasoning that's GMO and MSG FREE!

I use a garlic press to crush the whole coriander and pimento seeds. Please use a grinder if you have one

These are the liquid portion of what makes up the marinade, that will be all mixed together

  • Massage the mixture into chicken to coat all over

  • Drizzle dried basil and mixed herbs over the chciken

  • Cover and refrigerate to marinate overnight preferable or at least 45 minutes.

  • Heat oven
  • Bake chicken on gas mark 7 for 45 minutes to 60 minutes as per your choice.

Potatoes

  • Parboil potatoes for approximately 10 minutes

  • Drain potatoes in a colander

  • Sprinkle potatoes with salt, black pepper, chilli flakes, (herbs like rosemary, basil, or thyme), and add garlic (optional)

  • Bake till golden brown, and serve with chicken wings

Bon Appétit

It's been a few weeks since the new engine was installed into our narrowboat, and we are happy with all aspects of the performance so far. My husband and I are ecstatic to be back on "the cut" navigating our way down to Leicester City to see family and friends; and continue with the necessary refurbishing and improvements to the boat, before we make our way back to a convenient location over winter.

Our trip has been smooth sailing, and we've been cruising at 4 km/h, the full slow speed of a narrowboat, gleaming with delightful satisfaction, and it feels fucken good!

We are completely thrilled with the new engine, not only because it looks and sounds good, but it performs well too.

Before, with the old engine, the chances of breaking down were highly probable; Now, that stress is gone, leaving us the chance to enjoy the breathtaking, scenic views of nature at its best - that of the English countrysides.

Getting Onto The Leicester Line

From the Coventry Canal to The Grand Union Canal; the views along the Grand Union Canal are hilly and green, and as I was preparing a quick snack, I looked up across the field and saw this postcard image of cows dotted along the canal.

Being hilly, there are two separate flights of locks to operate: Watford Locks, and Foxton Locks, the manmade engineering system used to ascend and descend boats to different levels on the canals, and four tunnels also. A rather streneous, but fun and exciting journey, with water points and facilities along the way.

Our journey which started in Tamworth, after three months of wait for the new engine to be installed, had taken was to Braunston, where we'd made plans to stop for a few nights to visit our friend George at his horsebox coffee shop.

While spending a few nights in Braunston, we moored up at an idyllic location where we could watch the sun go down as we warmed up to colourful flames from our firepit, along the towpath.

Braunston Tunnel

On the last morning in Braunston, we set off early after having a few cups of coffee and conversations with George, and we made our way towards Braunston Tunnel, the longest of the four tunnels enroute Leicester, 1.87 km long.

Tunnels were something I dreaded at the start of our narrowboat journey, because being under the tunnels always made me feel like I was being buried alive. However, with the new engine, and also a brighter headlight that was installed many months ago, my tunnel anxiety has become a thing of the past.

Now I relax at the bow of the boat in darkness, with nothing but random thoughts of wherever my mind wanders.

Here you can see a video as we go through the Braunston Tunnel, which I enjoyed for the first time.

Watch on 3 Speak

Our new engine has has given us so much confidence, that we adroitly continued on with our journey over two days, and for the first time, we navigated our way in the dark, (yes, we operated three locks just after sunset, something we don't foresee becoming a habit).

Despite low water, fallen leaves and shrubbery which got stuck around the prop a few times, it was a heartwarming as always to see lovely Leicester's canals lit up at night, and swans everywhere.

I would be deluded to think that the swans were happy to see us moored at Castle Gardens Visitor Moorings again, I know for a fact that they are shameless scroungers, and like a fool, I served them my entire loaf of bread, as I watched them use their long beaks to grab the bread from the water. I am ever so curious to get a hold of a swans neck.

Have you ever felt the neck of a swan?

Do you like traveling under tunnels?

Today I'm sharing an easy, healthy, tasty, and super delicious vegan and vegetarian friendly recipe. I received a can of Green Jackfruit in a care package from a friend, and decided to make a curry dish of it.

Jackfruit is a species of tree in the Fig, and Breadfruit family, that's popular in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries, parts of India, and other Asian countries like Malaysia and of course, the Philippines.

I've always eaten ripe jackfruit (yellow colour) as a fresh fruit, and as a child, my Mom always boiled the seeds in salt to remove the stainy residue and then ate it as a snack.

However, never before now did it down on me that this sweet fruit could be used for cooking as a curry dish.

The noted difference is that the jackfruit used for cooking curry is in its green, unripened state, that's preserved and stored in a can (fresh from the tree would be great), and sold here in the UK.

Some of the reported benefits of jackfruit are: for it's rich content of Vitamin C for immune building and for benefits of the skin. See added benefits from Health Line.

My Reggae Curry Jackfruit Recipe is infused with some Jamaican ingredients such as Scotch Bonnet Pepper, however, you could substitute it with regular Child Peppers, or Jalapeño Peppers.

My first time cooking this dish, I've incorporated some of the traditional methods of cooking Jamaican Curry Chicken, by adding carrots and potatoes.

To achieve the red and green, of the vibrant African colours, I've garnished the dish with chopped Spring Onions, and leaves of Coriander, a herb commonly used to compliment and enhance curries.

The curry powder used is a mild Madras Curry, however, please feel free to try any curry powder of choice.

I hope you've enjoyed the video above, and please see detailed recipe (Method & Ingredients) below.

I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, but a lover of spicy and flavourful foods, noticeable in the enhanced portions of spices and herbs.

I hope you get the chance to try this incredible alternative to meat, that gave me the most fulfilling and pleasant surprise of the finished texture and taste and delightful dish overall.

Utensils Needed * Large Chopping Board * Sharpe Knife * 2 Sauce Pans * Mixing Bowl * Grater (Optional) * Can Opener * Garlic crusher * Spatula Or Spoon * 1 Table Spoon * 1 Tea Spoon

Ingredients (Serves 4 persons, or 2 meals for 2 persons) (Dry Good)

  • 1 can Green Jackfruit
  • 1 can Coconut Milk
  • 5-6 tbsp Curry Powder (Madras or any curry powder of choice)
  • 3 tbsp All Purpose Seasoning
  • Salt & Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Pimento Seeds (all-spice), crushed and whole
  • 3 tbsp Oil (EVOO or Olive Oil or any oil of choice)
  • 1 Cup Vegetable Stock
  • 2 Cups Rice

(Fresh Produce)

  • 1 Large Onion, (chopped)
  • 6 - 8 Gloves Garlic, (minced)
  • 1 Large Tomato, (diced)
  • 1 Small Tomato for garnishing
  • 4 Sprigs Of Fresh Thyme (1 tbsp dried is ok too)
  • 3 stems Spring Onions, (chopped)
  • 1 handful of Coriander Leaves
  • 1 Tbsp Ginger, (finely chopped or grated)
  • 1 Scotch Bonnet Pepper, (cooked whole or chopped and deseeded. Chilli Pepper is a suitable substitute)
  • 1 Potato, (diced)
  • 2 Carrots, (chopped)

_ 1 Lemon * other, 1 tbsp Butter

Method

I've gathered all my ingredients in tubs to make it easier to follow, as this recipe is best seasoned and left to marinade overnight. However, if time does not allow, try to marinade for at least 45 minutes and leave to chill in the refrigerator.

  • Open Jackfruit and drain and discard liquid and rinse thoroughly
  • Divide Seasonings in half, leaving some to be added directly yo the oil when cooking.
  • Add Jackfruit, Onions, Garlic, Scotch Bonnet Pepper, Pimento Seeds, Salt & Pepper to taste, All-purpose seasoning and Curry Powder.
  • Combine in a large bowl, mixing and rubbing ingredients into the Jackfruit to coat and inject the flavours.
  • Cover with a plastic cap as seen in video, or with cling wrap.
  • Leave seasoned Jackfruit to marinade overnight in the refrigerator, or at least 45 minutes before cooking.

  • Using a large saucepan, add oil and heat over medium heat.

  • Add the leftover seasoning and spices such as garlic, ginger, onions, scotch bonnet pepper, and curry powder to the oil to infuse flavour.

  • Add the carrots and potatoes and quickly mix in the oil and spices.
  • Add tomatoes, vegetable stock, and coconut milk.
  • Mix thoroughly,

  • Add the seasoned Jackfruit, mix to blend, and sprinkle thyme on top.

  • Cover and simmer on low heat for approximately 30 minutes, or until cooked.

  • Turn occasionally, and use a knife or spoon to gently shred the Jackfruit to smaller bite size pieces.

  • Cook rice with butter and lemon juice, while Jackfruit is left to cook.

Serve and enjoy.

I do hope you get to try this recipe, and as I mentioned I'm not a Vegan or a Vegetarian, but the finished dish has left me wanting to incorporate the use of jackfruit in my meals as a nutritious, healthy alternative to meat.

This was my first time cooking Green Jackfruit and if I missed anything that would work well to enhance this dish, as well as other recipe ideas, please feel free to drop comments below.

Thank you for reading and watching my video;)

Hello Hive,

My best friend Soraya gave me this coffee, a product from her home country Réunion Island. I'm gonna share my thoughts of it as I make myself a cuppa in the attached vlog.

However, before opening this package, I'm reminiscing on the first time I met Soraya.

I introduced myself, and stated that I'm from Jamaica.

Soraya said: "I'm from an island too."

I asked: "An island like England, or an island like Jamaica?"

She laughed and replied: "Réunion Island, not as well known as Jamaica, but a proper island like Jamaica; known for its volcanic and rainforest regions, coffee, vanilla, and that it's an overseas department and region of France in the Indian Ocean."

Soraya then asked if I heard of Mauritius, and I said, oh, yes! She said, "Réunion Island is close to Mauritius," and I said ok!

Ever since, whenever Soraya goes back home to Rèunion, she always takes a pack of this "le Lion Tradition Vanille Naturelle Coffee".

The Coffee from Réunion is known as Bourbon Pointu Café: Here's a little about the history and what makes this coffee so exotic.

'It's reported that Bourbon Pointu Café is the second most expensive coffee in the world behind Kopi Luwak, and here I am, making and pouring myself a cup.'

Pardon my French! You'll see what I mean🤣.

The Bourbon Pointu name is derived from the pointy shape of the coffee beans, however, in this vlog my review is of it's coffee beans.

In an informal setting and tone, I'll give you my take on the Vanilla Flavoured Réunion Coffee from a highly reputable brand called le Lio, while a sip from an espresso cup. It's so delicate and delicious, that I took 6 mins to savour the taste.

I hope you like my little vlog, and if you ever tried any of Réunion Island coffee, please drop me a comment:)

Thank you for stopping by!

Hello Hive,

One of the sweetest things about living on a narrowboat along the canals, is that I'm constantly surrounded by nature, which inspires me.

It's summertime, and all the blackberry bushes are laden with rich juicy berries just waiting for birds, bees, or anyone who enjoys foraging.

From Blackberry Bushes To Muffins I've created this little recipe, from the fresh blackberries in my "backyard" which is suitable for summertime, or anytime you have friends over.

Serving it nice and warm with Cappuccino made from DIY Kitchen utensils, and DIY Coffee Art Stencil.

As your host, I invite you to pop by Cinnamon Cup Coffee, we'll be serving these all week. However, please feel free to share your other coffee beverages and snacks that you like to eat.

You can request a special design for your coffee art, to go with these sumptuous, fluffy, and tasty muffins.

See you soon!

Thank you for stopping by.
