Everybody needs recovery!  Many of us know the reality of lives in addiction and compulsion.  Of living in isolation.  

The purpose of living life recovery is to help others get to know Jesus and His love for them.  To learn and apply the Twelve Steps of recovery to daily living in order to discover life's lessons and Gods promises and apply His will to their lives. 

I recently read this quote.  "“Listen with curiosity.  Speak with honesty.  Act with integrity.  The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand.  We listen to reply.  When we listen with curiosity, we don’t listen with the intent to reply.  We listen for what’s behind the words.”

My prayer today is that when we communicate with others in recovery,  we will be able to 'listen for what is behind the words. " And do all we can to help each other as we walk the road to recovery together.

God’s Word is foundational for the recovery process. It is our foundation stone, designed for building our lives. We are all unique. God created us all in His image, but He also created us as individuals.

Today, I want to encourage everyone to find out what works for you. There is only one way to achieve recovery, as far as I am aware. That is God’s way! Do not be pressured by others to do what they did. You are not them. Take time to get to know God and His plan for you and then establish your foundations built on how He guides you. God will not guide you in any direction that goes against his Word,

Learn to accept different

Romans 14:1 Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do. And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with–even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently.

In my early years of addiction, I looked up to and followed all the wrong people. My heroes were those that could drink the most, those that won the most fights, those that didn’t care.

In the recovery that changed! I realized being a hero has nothing to do with how macho you are and everything to do with what you believe and how committed you are to your beliefs.

Recovery is about facing the truth about what you believe and changing your beliefs if you need to.

Where were you when you first thought about entering recovery?

For me, I was in Adelaide on one of my, many geographical in 1987. My Dad had just died and even though for most of my life he wasn't around and I never really knew him it affected me. And, as every alcoholic does it times of hurt I got drunk. At the time I was living in shared accommodation, working through the day and drinking when I wasn't working. On this occasion, it was cold and wet outside so I bought alcohol on the way home from work and proceeded to get drunk. Because of the cold weather outside, I set myself up in the house, where I was home alone in front of an electric bar heater. You guessed it when I got drunk enough I fell asleep, knocked the heater over and set fire to the carpet.

I was awoken by a housemate who came home saw what I had done and put the fire out. Because of that incident, I was evicted from where I was living and decide to go back to Western Australia. So I quit my job and off I went. On the trip back to W.A. I thought about the incident and realized I needed to do something about my drinking. So on my return to W.A., I headed to Rockingham, my home town for my teenage years and booked myself into rehab there. I would like to say recovery started from there but it didn't. I was one of those people who the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous talks about when it talks about people being incapable of being honest. So I learned to play the 'Sobriety Game'

My decision to enter recovery came a couple of years later. After spending a couple of years on the 'revolving door' The decision came through a personal audience with Jesus Christ. Alone in my room in rehab in Adelaide one night, knowing I needed to get serious about recovery I knelt at the side of my bed to pray. As I prayed I heard the voice of Jesus say to me "Archie, you do not need to live like this anymore. follow me and I will lead you." That was in 1989. From that day to this day He leads I follow.

1 John 3:10 Here is how you can tell the difference between the children of God and the children of the devil. Those who don't do what is right do not belong to God. Those who don't love their brothers and sisters do not belong to him either.

Doing the right thing isn’t a recovery option, it’s a necessity. I have seen people in recovery who want to appear to do the right thing but don’t. As it says in our scripture today our actions and our attitudes identify those among us who are serious about life change. You can’t be successful in recovery and keep your old habits and attitudes. Eventually, if you do that, you will relapse.

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy but it is always possible. The Bible tells us God always provides a way out of difficult situations for us. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

When we neglect sin in our lives we go into conflict with the world. Sin may feel and seem right for a season. Eventually, however, sin will lead to hurt and pain, spiritual death, and separation from God and all He has prepared for us. Sins' purpose is to destroy God's peace and promise in our lives. The way out for us is to trust Him to help us to develop environments and circumstances in our lives that lead to us becoming the people He is calling us to be.

*Someone said to me in recovery “You can’t rely on your story to get you through for the rest of your life.” I disagree. The reason I disagree is because our stories are always changing unless we are dead.

Recovery to me is about ‘SPIRITUAL GROWTH’* If I am still in the same place spiritually today as I was yesterday, last week, last month, ten years ago I haven’t grown spiritually and I have no one to blame but myself.

When it comes to admitting our lives are a mess it is easy for us to convince ourselves they are not.

In the Bible is say’s “The God-setting-things-right that we read about has become Jesus-setting-things-right for us. And not only for us, but for everyone who believes in him. For there is no difference between us and them in this. Since we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both us and them) and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us, God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ. God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear that world of sin. Having faith in him sets us in the clear. God decided on this course of action in full view of the public—to set the world in the clear with himself through the sacrifice of Jesus, finally taking care of the sins he had so patiently endured. This is not only clear, but it’s now—this is current history! God sets things right. He also makes it possible for us to live in his rightness.” Romans 3:22-26

Numbers 23:19 God isn't a mere man. He can't lie. He isn't a human being. He doesn't change his mind. He speaks, and then he acts. He makes a promise, and then he keeps it.

Lying in the past was a way of life for me. Not only did I lie, I also believed my lies. When I came into recovery it took time for me to decipher what the truth was about me and about my life.

Today one of my motto's is “Always tell the truth.”No matter how bad it is or what the consequences of it may be. Today I try to live a life of ‘Integrity’ I’d like to say I am always truthful, but that would be a lie!

  • Are you ready to live a life that demands rigorous honesty?
