Breaking Chains: Understanding and Overcoming Internalized Racism in the Black CommunityJoin us on this episode of The Skelton Report as we explore the topic of Internalized Racism in the Black and African American community. We will take a deep dive into the concepts of psychoanalysis theory and defense mechanisms to understand how internalization operates in everyday life for Blacks and African Americans. We will also hear from renowned Black psychologists, Dr. Amos Wilson, Dr. Francis Cress Welsing, and Dr. Frantz Fanon, on their perspectives and understanding of internalized racism. We will discuss the negative impact of internalized racism on the Black psyche, including the perpetuation of Black on Black violence, and the ways in which individuals may not even be aware that they are operating within internalized racism. Interview with Epidemiologist Dr. Justin Xavier Moore
What a great interview! Dr. Moore is an epidemiologist with vast skills in biostatistics, epidemiology, database design, geographic information systems (GIS), mediation analysis, and cancer prevention and control. Dr. Moore serves as an Assistant Professor in the Cancer Prevention, Control, & Population Health Program, Department of Medicine; and the Institute of Public and Preventive Health at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Interview with Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Shar'ron Mason
Shar’ron Mason has a passion for helping families, couples and individuals to become their best selves and to live fulfilling lives. It is Shar’ron’s desire to create an atmosphere of safety and trust in which each client is able to engage in generative conversations that bring them closer to where they desire to be. Shar’ron received her Masters of Art Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Christian Theological Seminary and is currently a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in her private practice, Love That Relationship located in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Shar’ron published her first book, Marriage Ain’t for Punks in 2017 and enjoys using it as a platform for equipping, preparing and maintaining healthy relationships. She published her second book, Even Boss Ladies Need a Break, in 2019 and uses it to support women in making their health and well-being a priority and putting themselves on the front burner. 2021 was a busy year for Shar’ron. She published her third book, Entrepreneurship Ain’t for Punks as well as her his and hers gratitude journals. Shar’ron enjoys facilitating workshops and retreats that focus on healthy relationships and self-love.

In this episode we take a look at the controversial Doll experiment conducted by Black psychologists Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark. We take a look at the social and legal landscape during the era of segregation in the United States. The NAACP legal team lead by Thurgood Marshall asked social psychologist for expert testimony from the doll experiment to support that segregation negatively impacts Black ego development and racial preference. The Brown vs the Board of Education case overturned segregation in state sponsored schools. We are taking a look at the book titled "Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery" by Dr. Na'im Akbar. In this episode we look at the section of this phenomenal book at how the scars of slavery can be passed down generationally and still have an impact on the social and mental life of African Americans. We look at how slavery may have impacted how we view black leaders and leadership today. Our hope is to be social activists in reframing the Black mind to obtain healing and wholeness.
