We dive in to that question that bourbon drinkers want to know: Is Jack Daniels really a bourbon or not? A brief history about Jack Daniels is given before jumping into the ABC's of bourbon and the checklist we need to go through to know if it is in fact a bourbon. Season 2 episode 8, we move away from the Houses of Bourbon concept this week, although at the end of the episode Zach does give his rankings of the Houses, stick around for that. As for the rest of the episode, we go through tasting notes, price, proof and other information about some bourbons shared with us by our buddy Dave, Dion's brother. He was able to get some samples to us of some of his favorites and they are more or less from some micro distilleries and not so much the big brands, which is a cool experience. On the season 2 opener of Bourbon ReviewZ, we reintroduce the show and bring it back from its "short" hiatus! Then, we discuss the Houses of Bourbon framework, in which we will look at the different Corporate owners and Parent Companies of Bourbon distilleries. The first one we look at is Beam Suntory. We learn a brief history of Suntory, look at some non bourbon products and then a list of bourbon related ones. Zach gives some of his favorites of those and finishes up by reviewing a Bourbon of the Week from the Beam distillery: Basil Hayden Toast. On the season 2 second episode of Bourbon ReviewZ, we continue exploring the Houses of Bourbon with Sazerac. Zach gives a brief history of Sazerac from their beginnings with Cognac in the 1600s up until they acquire Buffalo Trace and Barton in the 90s and 00s. We briefly discuss some non bourbon related Sazerac products and then of course dive into the list of bourbon related ones, recalling back to previous episodes where Zach shared some of his favorites. Then he finishes up with a Bourbon of the Week that is a Sazerac product: 1792 Small Batch. Finally, a quick preview of the upcoming episodes. On this week's episode, Zach is by himself again in the studio. This one is a little different compared to other episodes, where as before there was a topic to be educated on, this one is simply just Zach sharing his favorite bourbons. He does a recap of his top 10 from the YouTube video series of Bourbon ReviewZ first, and then goes into his honorable mentions of the 11-20th ranked bourbons before getting into the top 10. With the top 10, he shares what distillery they are from, what proof they are, age, tasting notes and a personal story that goes along with some of them. The main idea, is that you should check out any of those 20 bourbons if you haven't done so, with special attention to the top 10. Zach knows this is NOT a perfect system, no matrix or prioritizing grid was used. He also recognizes that any of them from 6-20 could probably me mixed and mingled in different orders. The top 5 are pretty solid in place though, so make sure to look into those! Lastly, he finishes with a Bourbon of the Week.

This week Zach hits the road to visit and interview a bourbon novice, Jon Peterson. The interview takes place at the World Headquarters of the podcast, That's a Good Point! During their time visiting, Zach and Jon discuss other types of adult beverages, favorite bourbon experiences, go to bourbon choices, and so much more. They finish the episode by reviewing a Bourbon of the Week, and it's one of Jon's favorites. The interview questions asked are listed below if you want to think about them for yourself as well!
So before getting into bourbon, what were some of your adult beverages of choice? (beer? Wine? Gin? Rum?) Tell us some of your favorite ones and what you enjoy about them.
What was your first experience with bourbon(s) and how did that experience impact you and your future decisions regarding it?
What was your BEST experience with bourbon? Could be a favorite type, could be an event or a place you went to. What was it that made it the best experience?

What were some of the first bourbons you bought? Were there any you purchased that you hadn’t tried before and you didn’t like it?

Are there any bourbons you have heard of that you would like to track down and try?
Do you do any cocktails with whiskey? (as simple as whiskey coke and up) Why those cocktails?
You consider yourself a bourbon novice, you’ve had some experiences with bourbon and visited different distilleries though, so what criteria needs to be met in order for you to feel like you’ve left the novice stage and entered the advanced stages. Do you think that is more about knowledge level or something else?

As you can probably tell from the Episode title, it was difficult (at least for me) to come up with a clever name to summarize and group all 4 of those topics! So, I figured a longer but very transparent and obvious title was the way to go!!
In this episode, I first start off by summarizing the week before, in which we talked about oak barrels and char levels. I then get into explaining the topics that created the most diverse episode we have had so far, also ended up being the longest at 20+ minutes! I break down proof, by discussing distillation, barreling and bottling. I then talk about Age, a.k.a. maturing and how what happens in the barrel is the important stuff, not the bottle. I then finish up with storage and climate which go hand in hand a bit in regards to where the barrel is at in the warehouse, and how weather impacts that too.
I finish up by reviewing a bourbon of the week, tune in to see which one I reviewed and what rating it received!

In this episode of Bourbon ReviewZ, Zach is flying solo again after last week having guest Dion Braet visit the studio to discuss yeast and its relation to Bourbon. Zach starts off the show with a recap of last week's episode and then introduces the guest expert, Dion Braet. Dion is a Biology teacher, and therefore is qualified to discuss yeast in scientific terms and then he relates it to bourbon for us. Side note, Dion and Zach also host another podcast with their buddy Jon, called That's a Good Point. You should check it out!
After Dion and Irv talk about yeast, and a smidge about how some companies claim it changes the flavor based on the yeast strand they have, they then get into tasting and rating the Bourbon of the Week. This week, Zach and Dion try out Maker's Mark 101. They give some thoughts about the Nose, Taste and Finish and then Dion wants to know if Zach will give it coveted #SoGood Stamp of Approval.

In the second episode of Bourbon ReviewZ, Zach first starts by giving a quick recap of what happened on episode 1. Next he reminded listeners about how to follow him on the various social media accounts, which will be listed in this description as well. Lastly before getting into the main purpose of the episode, he listed some other good podcasts to checkout, ones related to bourbon and not related to it.
Next he got into bourbon grains and their importance. He spoke about Corn, Rye, Wheat and Barley and what their jobs are in order to make America's best native spirit. The process and what they provide were spoken about in some detail, as well as three types of bourbons as a result of the grain choices: Traditional, High Rye and Wheated. Examples were given for each one of those categories and the criteria used to differentiate them.
Lastly, Zach reviewed the Bourbon of the Week: Knob Creek Single Barrel Select, selected by Central City Liquors in Des Moines, Iowa. He gave some thoughts and notes on it and gave it a rating, listen in to see if it received the highly sought after #SoGood stamp of approval!

In the first podcast episode of Bourbon ReviewZ, Zach introduces the concept of the show, which at the heart of it is reviewing bourbon. However, he will also be talking about news, history and other information in regards to the bourbon industry.
