The Matt Feret Show: Recent Episodes

Matt Feret/MF Media, LLC

The Matt Feret Show focuses on the health, wealth and wellness of retirees, older adults and caregivers helping loved ones. I interview interesting people, insiders, and experts to help light a path to a successful retirement.

However, this isn't your run-of-the-mill retirement show. Getting older, preparing for retirement, taking care of our loved ones AND ourselves is so much more complex and dynamic than stocks, bonds, annuities and insurance on repeat.

While those topics are occasionally covered, I kept looking for a show that discussed the "other" really important older-adult issues like Medicare, Social Security planning, health, wellness, caregiving, multi-generational households, housing, taking care of parents or loved ones from afar, retirement time management, mindfulness, retirement ideas, second careers, family dynamics, and so much more.

I couldn't find that show, so I decided to create it myself! Welcome to The Matt Feret Show!

This episode will give you an insider’s guide to reverse mortgages, the myths vs. the facts, a breakdown of the up-front and ongoing costs of reverse mortgages, whether or not the reverse mortgage process and products have evolved, and how and when to use them as part of a comprehensive retirement plan for you or your loved ones.

Mitch Cooper is a Reverse Mortgage Advisor for Mutual of Omaha Reverse Mortgage. In 2021, he became the youngest person in history to earn the Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional (CRPC®) designation.

“For most retirees, two-thirds of their wealth is in their home or the average American retiree. So proportionately there's all sorts of networks but still around a lot of their wealth is in their home and that's great except for, one, it's your last home it just becomes this piggy bank you can't really touch, you have to refinance or sell it to get access to it. And if you sell it, you still got to live somewhere and so you got to have a roof over your head. And so that's where we go, "Can we keep the main purpose of the home?" Which is to have a roof over your head; shelter. There's a lifestyle there depending on where they're at in that range and then draw some of that wealth back out in a way that secure, meaning you get to still live there...

Even if 2008 happens, as long as they're living there, paying the property taxes, homeowner's insurance, it doesn't matter if the loan balance has gone over the value of the home because it's FHA insured and it's a true non-recourse loan, meaning we cannot come after any other assets to collect that shortfall. So they still have a roof over their head, same home, and that kind of thing.”

David Laiderman is CEO of Veterans Home Care, a private, family-owned and operated company that helps veterans, their survivors and caregivers support in-home care. He also created Smart Companion – an Amazon Alexa and Amazon Show - connected device that connects older adults with caregivers and a support structure to help keep loved ones in their homes safely.

Veteran’s Home Care VetAssist Program Aid and Attendance is a little-known VA benefit for veterans or their survivors who need the help of another to live safely at home. It pays for assistance with activities of daily living, such as help with personal care, medication reminders, transportation benefits, light housekeeping, laundry and more. Aid and Attendance can also pay for in-home care, adult daycare, assisted living expenses, medical alert devices and more.

This episode will give you an insider’s guide to in-home care for older adults, veterans, their surviving spouses and caregivers.

“Our country hasn't planned for it. Our country doesn't understand it. We have this massive aging population coming. I'm sure you talk about it, but the reality is, 10 years from now, over 20% of our population is going to be over the age of 65. Another 20% of our population is going to be under the age of 18. So when we look at who's in the middle and respectively both of those groups of individuals need almost one on one care and maintenance and oversight and expense. And so it's going to put a big squeeze on our population, a mass attack on our health system. And so looking at that and looking at all of the things that are coming into play there, it's going to become increasingly more expensive to care for your loved one, to care for your parents as they age.”

My guest today is Gregg Kimmer, President and CEO of ATRIO Health Plans. Based in Oregon, ATRIO administers Medicare Advantage plans for customers in Oregon, Nevada, Tennessee and Louisiana.

This edition of The Matt Feret Show will give you an Insider’s Guide to Medicare Advantage, from the perspective of a Medicare Advantage plan president and CEO!

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links:

“I really enjoy designing Medicare Advantage plans because I know down the road, someone else is going to benefit from this. And again, that person who's going to benefit from it is in the most deserving population in America, and that really gives me a lot of satisfaction. So there are hundreds and hundreds of benefits within a Medicare Advantage plan. The vast majority of them are what I call invisible benefits. The benefits a person may never use, the benefits a person may not even know they have. I like to focus on six core benefits to make a Medicare Advantage plan really stand out and again, benefit the consumer or the member. That's what this is all about.”

This Special Edition of The Matt Feret Show are re-broadcasts of two interviews I gave this month at WGN-TV Chicago, as well as on WBBM in Chicago.

It was a lot of fun to talk to the WGN anchors off-camera, both of whom asked for Medicare advice for family members! I left each of them a copy of the updated second edition (2022-2023) of Prepare for Medicare – The Insider’s Guide to Buying Medicare Insurance.

The WBBM one was taped over the phone, but the WGN interview was LIVE! It sure felt weird to be back on a live broadcast television news set after over 20 years!

I even slipped up, but only once. Can you find it?

Whitney Elkins-Hutten and is the Director of Investor Education at PassiveInvesting.com and a real estate professional.

This edition of The Matt Feret Show will give you an insider’s guide to cash-flow real estate investing before or during retirement. We talk about the basics of house-hacking, using single family homes as rentals, being a landlord vs. using a property manager, real estate syndication deals, commercial real estate, apartment buildings, car-washes, and a whole lot more!

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links:

https://themattferetshow.com

“I would really encourage anybody listening, ask that question, what do you want? Why do you want it? And who do you need to become? Those are three questions to ask. And that will really help inform you, do I really want to be a hands-on investor, or do I want to place it with property management? I will tell you, when I added in property management, that allowed me to scale faster, and that property manager was able to work with the tenant far better than I could. They could do so many things far better than I could. I also encourage people, don't get into the real estate game with the idea that you're only going to have one rental property.”

The 2022-2023 Edition of Prepare for Medicare - The Insider's Guide to Buying Medicare Insurance is out NOW!

To help me celebrate, my friend and fellow Medicare insurance insider Bryan Derheim stopped by to chat all things Medicare.

If you're looking for some really good background and advice around shopping for Medicare insurance, you're going to want to pay attention to Bryan. He's spent the last 15+ years around the Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D and Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) insurance space.

This episode will give you an insider’s view into the differences between Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans, why what state you live in can determine the amount of coverage a Medicare Supplement plan can give you, unknown, surprising little-thought-of gaps in Medigap coverage and how dental insurance, vision, hearing and other types of insurance and other plans play into your Medicare health insurance equation.

My guest for this episode is author Susan Salenger, who recently published a book entitled Sidelined: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health. While acknowledging gender bias, Susan also writes a lot about helping women change this dynamic by showing them how to advocate for themselves, how to get past embarrassment, communication issues, shame and loneliness and proactively changing their approach to the healthcare system so they are less affected by gender bias.

This episode will give you an insider’s view into the latest links between gender and healthcare, gender differences in outcomes, approaches and attitudes towards self-care, second opinions and how women can change their approach to their doctors and the healthcare system.

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links:

https://themattferetshow.com

"When (women) walk in the doctor's office, they're embarrassed, so they hesitate to talk about all their symptoms. 50% of women lie to their doctors, and 25% of that 50% don't even think that their lying is a problem. Not understanding that now that they've distorted what's happening, the doctors' chance of an accurate diagnosis are even less than they were in the first place. I was startled at the amount of shame that women feel about being ill. That took me aback."

How do you maximize your Social Security benefits in retirement? Social Security spousal benefits can be confusing; what are the best Social Security benefit strategies for couples? How do you file at the Social Security Administration? Social Security consulting – when is it a good idea?

What’s the biggest mistake people make when filing for Social Security benefits? Is the Social Security Administration going broke? What’s the best age to take Social Security retirement benefits?

This episode will give you an insider’s view into the best way to maximize your Social Security benefits in retirement, spousal benefits, strategies for couples, how to use and interact with the Social Security Administration local office staff, what to watch out for, when you need to pull in a Social Security consultant and a whole lot more!

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links:

https://themattferetshow.com

“We plan for everything. We plan our vacations; we plan our marriages and maybe we plan our divorces. But we plan a lot of things. You're going to receive your Social Security benefit on average, 18 to 20 years, but maybe 25 or 30 years, maybe even longer. So you need to plan before you file that application, and that's the important part. Before you file, look at all your options.

You may end up doing what you were thinking of doing anyway, but at least now you've looked at it and a lot of people will make adjustments and it doesn't have to be a lot of years, it doesn't have to be, I'm planning on filing at 62. I looked at my Social Security, now I got to work another eight years and I'm not going to retire till 70. That's not the case for everybody, but I may wait till full retirement age, or maybe I'll wait till 64, 65. All sorts of things can factor in there. You want to look at it before you apply.”

This episode of The Matt Feret Show will give you an insider’s view into caregiving for a spouse. Charlotte Bayala has first-hand experience caring for a sick spouse for over a decade. Listen to her journey and learn how she found her voice by advocating for herself, her family and adjusted her mental and physical health using yoga, meditation and caregiving groups.

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links: https://themattferetshow.com

“Don't be passive about asking for the help that you need. No matter if it's your family, if it's friends, or if it's because you need to have it contracted out. You need to know, "I can't cook for the next two weeks. I need help with meals." And you find there are actually people who like to cook, that gives that person an opportunity to shine in what they actually know how to do and like doing, and they're able to do it and help someone at the same time. You have to see what thing can you ask a person to do that will benefit them. It sounds weird. It shouldn't have to benefit them, but if you want them to really show up and do that thing, that you need them to do, if they have more of a why to do it, they're going to be more apt to do it.”

And when you turn 62, you can start taking Social Security. It is an “annuity,” meaning it will pay you a guaranteed sum of money until you pass away.

No one likes to think about their eventual demise. It’s science: research says our own brains keep us from dwelling on it. A recent NeuroImage study found human brains categorize death as an unfortunate event that only happens to other people.

If you're a caregiver or have older parents, listen up!

Fifty percent of older adults will need long-term care at some point in their lives. If you or your parents have made it to age sixty-five, congratulations! There’s now a seventy percent chance of need long-term care.

My guest this episode is Bryan Herdt. Bryan is long term care insurance industry rock star. This episode of The Matt Feret Show will give you a very comprehensive insider’s view into long-term care insurance, what it is, how many types of long term care insurance there are, how to buy it, when to buy it, the differences in long-term care for people with insurance, what to buy, how to buy and why whatever you do, you need to hit this head on… if not for you, then for your parents and loved ones.

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links:

https://themattferetshow.com

"The emotion that is brought out in people about losing their independence and losing the ability to self-manage is horrifying enough that people will just... they'll just dismiss it. They'll just say I just don't see it happening to me. And honestly, still, that's probably one of the biggest reasons why more people don't do proactive planning for long-term care.”

Joan Price is an author, educator and self-described advocate of ageless sexuality who loves helping people have and maintain healthy sex lives throughout their lives, but especially as they grow older.

This episode will give you an insider’s view into sex as we age, with your partner, by yourself, sex when you’re single, dating websites, sex after the death of a spouse, hormones, scheduling sex, and a whole lot more.

Full episode transcript, notes, quotes and links:

https://themattferetshow.com

“If one partner is insisting on things that just no longer serve you, then it might be really important to see a counselor, see a sex-positive and age-positive counselor, they're not all that way, or a certified sex therapist, if the partner is willing to go and to get some help, to get some help on the communication, get some help and seeing how important it is going forward, because there's great intimacy that comes with sex and great sex that comes with intimacy. If you are cutting off that lifeline to the intimacy in your relationship, then it can be seriously destructive.”

Todd Morrissey is President of Medicare Solutions at Advisors Excel. Advisors Excel is a nationwide firm based out of Topeka. It helps independent financial professionals, advisors, and wealth managers build independent practices.

This episode will give you an insider’s view into why financial planners, wealth managers and their firms haven't typically gotten very involved in Medicare insurance coverage. But, that's changing and Todd reviews why it's very important to start planning for Medicare well before age 64, how taxes and IRMAA play a part of the equation as well as HSAs.

Full episode transcript, notes. quotes and links:

https://themattferetshow.com

"What I will tell you is some individuals who look at a Medicare Advantage and they see what a max out of pocket is, but they say to themselves, "Well, but I'm not paying a premium every month. I can write that check for the max out of pocket." So they know they have that. But you're right. There are some clients where a financial advisor is talking to them and they say, "Look, I want to go to the doctor. I want to not have any out of pocket expense. I just want to pay my premium." Well, then a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) is something that they would consider. The adage of one size does not fit everybody is definitely true in the Medicare space."

Erika Pimentel holds a Ph.D. in human nutrition and is a NASM-certified personal trainer who specializes in women's fitness.

This episode will give you an insider’s view into maintaining fitness as you age, the importance of weight and core training for balance, nutrition and meal plans, online training programs versus in-person assessments, customization versus just getting started, fad diets, food and exercise, and a whole lot more. Enjoy!

"Once you hit 40, between 40 and 50, you have a bigger decrease in lean muscle mass. It's just muscle atrophy. It's a normal process in the human body. It continues throughout your fifties, sixties, and seventies. But the biggest chunk is between mid-thirties to fifties. So one of the things that I think is critical is people understanding that if you are active, you are better able to maintain your lean muscle mass. There are studies that show that once you start experiencing some of that weight gain, late thirties, early forties, if you do not decrease your caloric intake by about 200, 300 calories, you will see that weight gain unless you're active, unless you're doing something proactively. So it is a part of human nature, I guess, for you to start seeing some of those changes. It's what you do about them, what's going to be the end result. Will you gain weight? Will you able to maintain your weight?"

Bill Pellegrini runs a large Medicare insurance agency in Phoenix, Arizona that works with over 300 Medicare insurance agents across twenty states. That gives him a pretty unique perspective on what kind of Medicare insurance people are buying across a large section of the country and why they’re buying it.

This episode will give you a bit of an insider’s view into how why Bill thinks local independent Medicare insurance agents are an extremely important part of finding people personalize and individualize their Medicare insurance coverage, Medicare PPOs, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) coverage and Medicare provider networks.

“You have to shop your (Medicare) plans every single year. There are too many moving parts, not to. And there are too many dollars on the table that you could be losing by not shopping.”
