Peace At Home Podcast

Ever wanted to learn more about the wonderful and wild country of Turkey? Well you’re in luck, come and listen as our Turkish host Sinan tries to explain to our two very British co-hosts exactly how this country ended up being the way it is. This podcast will attempt to equip you and our co-hosts with enough knowledge to confidently say they understand Turkey before the 2023 Presidential elections occurring during the country’s centenary.

Hello all, this is the (for now) final episode of Peace at Home we're planning on doing for a while. For reasons which are explained in episode, but mainly due to fatigue and a sense that the project itself has run its course with the local elections in Turkey resulting in a rare AKP national vote loss. We talk about this and other things, including the fact that all of our bonuses over on our Patreon will be made available for free members on May 1st. So if you are a Patron our sincere thanks for your support, but you'll have a couple of months now to change to a free membership if you so choose and the archive will be available to you forever. Thank you all for coming along with us for this, from Sinan, Jamie and Ben (I assume, they've been away for a while).

Also our music is by Jordan. Bye forever!

CN: If you want to skip the graphic description of the events described in this episode the timestamps are 42:43 to 44:30.

It's the middle of the 50s and the Cold War is in full swing, Turkey is safely within NATO's grasp alongside its friendly neighbour Greece, with whom it has pretty good relations. Then the issue of decolonisation and specifically Cyprus comes up, with some on the Island favouring unification or "Enosis" with Greece. This new tension offers the third (for now) Superpower in the world Britain a chance to save itself from diplomatic embarrassment which sets off a series of events that lead to tragedy in the form of the Istanbul Pogrom. It's war! But Turkey is still recovering from such a long period of turmoil, so what is the state going to do? Joining the war would invite the devastation that Ismet Inonu is so desperate to avoid, staying neutral may not be allowed by the great powers of the war. So come along to see how Turkey walked the tightrope of World War 2, how tense it is to be a geographically important neutral country and how different sections of Turkey's state had their own preference for both the outcome of the war and who they would rather join at various points.

Neutrality. What is it good for? Well it turns out it can be good for a lot of things as our case study today shows. We'll be heading to the inconspicuous province of Hatay, which it turns out was a major sore point for the Turkish nationalists in the early Republic and is now a sore point for Syrian nationalists. The poor place just can't win. We re-establish the background of the world situation and how Ismet Inonu took advantage of a weakened France who were willing to engage in another front in appeasement in order to ensure Turkey's neutrality in World War 2. Was Hatay really a big enough deal to change that? Well, that's for us to find out and France to never know.

With Ataturk out of the picture (or at least no longer alive), Turkey finds itself at a crossroads as it often seems to. With World War 2 looming on the horizon as Chamberlain's "peace in our time" seems about as true as the idea of Peace at Home, Turkey will go on to tread the narrow path of neutrality in World War 2, but what does neutrality really entail? And who is the new ruler of Turkey Ismet Inonu really? And can neutrality be used to bolster a nationalist project while securing a new leader in place, during a period of uncertainty for everyone? We'll be answering some of these questions over this episode and the next couple (at least), in this one we mostly set the scene and look at the challenge confronting Inonu, what his conduct as Prime Minister tells us about how he'll likely meet them and engage with some Turkish mythmaking about its own role in World War 2, which is certainly interesting for a non-belligerent.

A preview of our bonus episode on the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II, an act carried out by what we might call a "true 70s adventurer" who was also a gun-for-hire, a bank robber, a fascist and apparently trained with the PFLP all while becoming friends with the Pope he attempted to assassinate while he was in prison. So come for a look at a real character, the conspiracy theories behind the assassination attempt and to see how the past was truly a foreign country.

We've made it to 10 episodes! Well done us! As a way to mark this milestone we take a short break from our historical progression and decide to take a long look at the man who's looming over the narrative we've tried to construct here and who's also in our logo. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. While we reject the idea of great man history, it'd be an incomplete series on our part if we didn't look at the life of the man, how that life will have impacted his decisions as Turkey's president and what his legacy was at least in the immediate aftermath of his death.

So come with us for a journey from a cosmopolitan city in Greece, to Syria, to Libya, to the Caucuses and all the way around the Ottoman Empire and Turkey as we follow his steady rise to power.

If you want to support us and get access to the bonus episodes including the upcoming bonus episode on the assassination attempt on John Paul II, the background of the assassin and why the Popemobile looks like that now, then check out our Patreon.

Last time we got a little too caught up in the rebellions, so this time we went straight into the Six Arrows, what they represent, what their utility was to the Kemalists and why those arrows in particular? We especially focus on the intersection between the various six arrows, how they relate to other revolutionary/modernising projects and take a look at the global impact of Kemalist ideology, especially from some unsavoury perspectives that you might not expect.

Also we talk about Turkey's second short-lived experiment with Liberal Democracy and take a look at the first multi-party local elections that took place, which also were the first to allow women to vote and be elected in the country's history, so a lot of interesting milestones in this one!

In what was meant to be a comprehensive episode covering the major political developments of the 1928-1938 period, we instead ended up getting bogged down in the detail of the Xoybun. A Kurdish pan-nationalist party that was involved in the little known breakaway Ararat Republic which was one of the more successful Kurdish attempts at independence lasting officially for four years. Even though it was never internationally recognised and didn't succeed in its ultimate aim, we find that the successes they did have were remarkable.

We also go on to talk about the Dersim Rebellion (or Dersim Genocide as it's sometimes known and we'll see why), the events leading up to it and how the program for Turkification in the south east of Turkey was often done by shows of force and was met with resistance by the local population.

It's time for us to return to the Reform Factory for the second half of the key Kemalist reforms during the early Republic in Turkey. We learn about some of the issues that faced the early nationalist project of the Kemalists, which included abysmally low literacy rates (though there is some dispute around that), a lack of confidence in the national identity which led to weird things like trying to replace literally every loanword in the language and how they confronted some of these problems by collaborating with the acceptable face of the far-right in early Republican Turkey. We also engage in a lot of chaos since our guest apparently brought the habits of his own podcast to us, such a good guest, bringing us a gift! We run right up to 1938, which is an important date for reasons we'll get into in a few episodes.

We're almost out of the 20s, I promise! Come and join us as we go through the Turkish economic response to the Great Depression and see why, despite the big man Ataturk's political and economic instincts the Turkish response seemed to go so strongly against his own stated political preferences. Including a look at the two developing factions in the CHP, the Statists and the Liberals (boo hiss) and their two primary figures Ismet Inonu and Celal Bayar (boo hiss). We also experience Sinan's brain melting as his poorly ventilated bedroom causes him to lose his mind partway through the recording.

At last, we're talking about our favourite topic, Communism. Sadly Ben decided they were going to off to England and have "a nice time" there, which should be illegal, but alas isn't. So we drafted in our friend David from Praxiscast, who you should all check out, but after you get your dose of Turkish communist action. So come and join us to learn about the origins of the Turkish Communist Party (1920) and the trials (both literal and metaphorical) they went through as well as yet more assassination plots, exile and because, of course, party splits and very confusing party mergers.

Also come along to learn about the obscure pseudo-Marxist Kemalist magazine that Hearts of Iron IV brought back to prominence, the Kadro Movement (which Sinan lazily translated into The Squad, which he assures us is technically correct and not forced in order to make a joke about the Squad in America.)

We track back to the glorious year, 1923, but for a good reason, last time we spoke about the reforms that Ataturk pursued and there were a lot of them. There was also a lot of politics and dare we say, a lot of interesting power dynamics for a one man regime centred on the power of one man (at least if you believe what people said). We go over the foundation of Turkey's first parliamentary opposition party, the Progressive Republican Party, the circumstances around its foundation, how its politics forced the Republican People's Party to begin to take the form of a political party rather than a national liberation movement. We investigate the Sheikh Said rebellion, which marked the first major uprising against the modern Turkish state by Kurds, with independence as an explicit goal. We also discuss the Izmir Plot, an assassination plot used to justify purges of the opposition to Mustafa Kemal, which may have been based on an entirely fake letter (stop us if you've heard this before in the 20s) and while people may dispute whether it was real or not, we'll let you decide after our chat about it.

At last, the country exists, there's no more war (at least not with foreign powers) and there's a whole lot of things to fix, so let's learn a little about what needed fixing. We begin our look at Ataturk's reforms up to 1928, just before the Great Depression hits and see what exactly the Kemalists identified as their necessary early reforms. We lay out the situation Turkey was in on its independence in 1923, including the economy (there wasn't any), the literacy (there wasn't much) and the Caliph (there was one too many) and what the Kemalists proposed to do about each of the problems facing the early republic. This is more of a high level assessment of the period from 1923-1928 since, as you might guess, there were a lot of reforms, some would say too many, but that's a topic for another day.

The difficult second episode is here! And by the end of this episode we finally get to the stage where Turkey officially exists, but first we need to go through a series of complicated negotiations at the Conference of Lausanne. We also go over a foreign policy crisis that was so severe that the British government of the day had to resign (something that would never happen now in the UK), partially because once again Winston Churchill has messed up during a political crisis involving the Turkish straits. Sinan also talks about the only statue that actually teaches history as it relates to the infamous Population Exchange between Turkey and Greece.

It's here at last. The Peace At Home Podcast is finally a thing. Join us on our first episode as we set out the scene in 1918 in the aftermath of World War One and see the beginning of the transformation of Turkey from the Ottoman Empire into the early Republic of Turkey. A story that includes: Descendants of Circassian pirates, generals simply refusing to arrest people, an example of why Turkish nationalist sources are to be taken with a pinch of salt and of course as with any occupation: The Brits.
