In today’s episode, I’ll be breaking down three of my favorite quotes from book 5 of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and trying to see how they could be applied to modern life as many of Stoicism's teachings can be.

“At the break of day, when you are reluctant to get up, have this thought ready to mind: “I am getting up for a man’s work. Do I still repent it, if I am going out to do what I was born for, the purpose for which I was brought into the world? Or was I created to wrap myself in blankets and keep warm? But this is more pleasant. Were you then born for pleasure—all for feeling, not for action?"

That is today's quote. Let's break down the Stoic teachings found within it.

Discomfort is normal, yet we avoid it at all costs. In today’s episode, we discuss a quote from Daring Greatly by Brene Brown where she talks about normalizing discomfort. I expand on the ideas shared in her book on how the modern educational system is doing a poor job of inspiring innovation and instead breeding fear and shame. If you’re a student or teacher of any kind there ought to be something you can derive from this episode, so stay tuned. How do you perceive the education system to be? What flaws does it have? How can we encourage participation, innovation, and creativity? If you're trying to find out: how to leave your comfort zone, how to be less of a perfectionist, how to have more courage, or how to feel less shame, then Daring Greatly and this episode will be of good help.

Why do goals matter? In today’s episode we’ll take a look at the extreme situations in which goals quite literally kept people alive and how it ties back to ancient Stoic philosophy; the art of staying present and discarding all retrospective thoughts. Stoicism and Logotherapy share similar viewpoints, so whether you're: trying to find meaning, learning about Stoicism, trying to find how to set goals, how to set effective goals, or how to be more present, this episode and the books discussed within it will provide a great bit of help!

Stick around if you want to learn all about the big-fish little pond effect, and examine what history and psychological insight tell us about it, and how we should approach it. If you want to learn how to make better decisions, how to choose your academic path, or how to make good choices in life, this is the episode for you!

The Stoics were very fond of the idea of reminding themselves that life was short. They insisted that we continually meditate on that idea and come to terms with its albeit scary reality. Today's quote comes from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and I break it down using some concepts from "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" by Mark Manson. Should we fight back against mediocrity? Are we all truly special? Let's attempt to use Stoic philosophy to answer this question.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fck by Mark Manson is a #1 New York Times bestseller for a reason. He really does have a counterintuitive approach that highly neglects common "self helpy" advice. In today's episode, I'll be going through chapter 6 of the book: "You're Wrong About Everything", and breaking down its key points; condensing them into a bite-sized episode that you can digest in minutes! In this chapter, Manson talks about identity, how we're always wrong, why we should question ourselves, why we should always avoid certainty, and other topics we often avoid to feel better about ourselves. Manson is the author of other popular books such as Everything Is Fcked: A Book About Hope, Will by Will Smith, and Models: Attract Women Through Honesty. Being a disruptor in the self-help/ non-fiction world, Manson pushes his ideas in a less conventional fashion, listen to this episode and find out how youcan melt yourself and how you can become more resilient.

Change is inevitable. In today's episode, we discuss just that as well as how the roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius dealt with it. Stoicism can teach us a lot about how universal problems remain unchanging and this is true here as too! Using the example of Netflix's founder Mark Randolph, Malcolm Gladwell's Hush Puppies example from "The Tipping Point" and the analogy of a rip current, I break down what Marcus Aurelius meant with this "Meditations" passage and how Stoicism calls us to embrace change, as going against it breaks the dichotomy of control.

Throughout Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, a common thread can be followed; death. Death is a common theme throughout Meditations and throughout Stoicism as a philosophy. Why? Because Stoicism argues that nothing matters except the present moment; that we're too caught up in the past and future to truly live life and in doing so we avoid the most finite, spontaneously assigned resource of time. We often take life for granted, we don't think twice about how there was no guarantee that we'd wake up tomorrow. Through Meditations, this great roman emperor reminds himself that staying grounded is important, that the fountain of life is one that could run out of water at any time.

In Daring Greatly, Brene Brown shares her research-backed theories and approaches to vulnerability; showing it in a new, less judgmental light. In this book she also talks about feedback, and how many avoid it because of shame. After all, how can you feel bad about yourself if no one else looks at what you have made? I argue that feedback is found everywhere. To avoid feedback is to avoid good work. If you run a creative business, a podcast, a YouTube channel, or are looking for a way to improve, the only clear answer is feedback. Writers get numerous feedback, and through it, their best work is reached. Why should it be any different for you? Listen to this episode, and you'll see just how embedded into our world feedback really is.

It is not often that creative writers such as Austin Kleon can have teachings tied to the works of more academic writers such as Cal Newport. In this episode, however, I talk about a Cal Newport quote where he's criticizing the constant distractions that we receive as a consequence of our never-ending stream of attention-grabbing stimuli. I tie in this quote to a chapter from Keep Going by Austin Kleon where he talks about having a time and space of bliss, where nothing can reach you, and it is only you with yourself, and your thoughts (a scary though peaceful thought).

Ryan Holiday is fantastic at condensing large and seemingly surface-level ideas such as "Seek Relationships" or "Control Your Anger" and expanding upon them in a way that truly makes you want to change those undesirable ways. In today's daily book quote episode, I break down an excerpt from Stillness is the Key by Ryan Holiday where he mentions bathing in beauty, looking at the world through the eyes of a poet, and letting earth's overwhelming presence nurture and replenish you. Stillness is the Key is a book highly inspired by Stoic philosophy so if you're looking for a way to enter that realm or expand your current knowledge, you should check out the book.

Join me and learn all about the fallacy of late bloomers and how we can encourage these people to collect the fruit of their efforts, no matter how old or young the tree is.

In today's daily book quote episode of the podcast, I share a quote from Austin Kleon's best-selling book featured in the New York Times, Steal Like an Artist. In this quote, he mentions how creativity is a collective effort and I expand upon it, recalling how it's fascinating just how much we are inspired by people we don't even know of. If you're a creative, an artist, or an entrepreneur, then Austin Kleon's work will encourage you to keep going and seek unoriginal originality.

Has someone ever mentioned an old attribute of yours that is no longer prominent, or, has been more general and said something along the lines of "you've changed"? If so, you're not the first to experience this illogical argument. Accompanying a quote from the Five-Bullet-Friday email newsletter, I talk about how we build are judgments around people; how we expect them to stay stagnant when in reality it is the complete opposite.

We often look at work as a daunting, horrible, miserable, no good, very bad task that we just need to push through. In some circumstances, that may really be the case. Being overworked is becoming increasingly common among students and entry-level jobs. However, the field of work isn't just darkness and sadness, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In today's book quote episode, I talk about the concept of "Sunday Neurosis" and how for many of us, work is the thing that keeps us motivated, since it inherently has goals built into it. Consider this perspective shift when approaching the day ahead.

If you've ever tried to journal or do any other self-reflective activity, it's not uncommon to find yourself letting some details slide or trying to cover up others. In today's daily book quote, I share an excerpt from Stillness is the Key by Ryan Holiday. The quote is something that Stoic philosopher Seneca said about writing down how your day went at the end of it. I think we could all benefit from a little self-honesty and this is all within our control.

In today's Daily Book Quote I'll explain a quote from The Stranger by Albert Camus where he talks about something his mother always said; how humans constantly adapt to their situations. I tie this idea to Stoicism, how Marcus Aurelius has a passage that reflects this same thought process, only his is illustrated through a metaphor.

This is the final episode in the series where we read a quote from every book of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. In today's episode, the boxer, and gladiator analogy is mentioned and talked about, which mentions how you should approach your personal life philosophy. This boxer and gladiator mentality applies to: how you approach life, how you tackle tough situations, how you deal with fried, how to apply philosophy to your life, and more. We also talk about how history repeats itself, and how nothing we see today is new, rather a different appearance to something that has already happened.

The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it.

But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the murder, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn't so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final year project, she starts to uncover secrets that someone in town desperately wants to stay hidden. And if the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth?

In this episode of the podcast, I reviewed the popular book A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. I gave my reasoning for giving it four stars and explained the key parts of the book that I enjoyed and those that I didn't.

What we think is scary. The future, past, and present have ways to creep up on us and make us want to clear our minds completely. This results in distractions. Distractions that give us something to do, something to stimulate our senses other than opening the door to our minds and checking what's inside. Jean finds herself in this situation, and this quote is one I believe many of us will be able to relate to.

Failure is a part of all of our lives. We all take a shameful approach to understanding our own failures, blaming ourselves and not the actions we committed that got us there. Morgan Housel; author of The Psychology Of Money, writes about how we should understand the percentage of luck that goes into any given endeavor. Once we know this, our self-judgment will decrease, giving us more clarity as to if our failure was tied to actions, or a result of factors we cannot control.

Personal experience is something few of us take into consideration when evaluating the decisions (whether right or wrong) of individuals other than ourselves. Morgan Housel, author of the book The Psychology of Money, mentions how our experience with money (this can apply to any other situation) makes up such a small, insignificant proportion of how money actually works, but makes up around 80% of how we think money works.

On this episode, I once again share a quote from Atomic Habits. This time, rather than talking about systems or small, incremental changes, I talk about the idea that identity is the way forward. Many of us strive to have our future goal or habit change how we are as a person; our identity. Clear proposes a different idea, that it should be our identity that changes first, then our habits will follow.
