I'm a trans man who is currently traveling around the US interviewing transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people who identify as anarchist, libertarian, constitutionalist, objectivist, conservative, apolitical, mutualist, skeptical, centrist, moderate, republican, independent, rural, religious, etc. I'm particularly interested in thoughtful conversations about political issues and identity that are different from what you may have heard before.

Interview with Olliever Buchanan, a queer, intersex, trans man in Oklahoma City, OK. We discuss using they/them pronouns at work, coming out as different identities, dealing with chest dysphoria, finding out they are intersex, endogenous and exogenous hormones, DNA/genetic tests, anti-trans bills and intersex exclusions, autonomy vs control of bodies, how testosterone therapy affected their body, gender affirming care, and being perceived as a cisgendered gay man out in public.
We also discuss the term abrosexual, some discomfort between the intersex and trans communities, the multitude of identities they embody, appreciating femininity, family support, and their trans and intersex activism.

Part 2 of 2. Interview w/ Paula Sophia Schonauer, LCSW, a trans woman who is a former police officer in Oklahoma City. We discuss her coming out trans at work as a police officer, discrimination from local police officers as well as police associations, the hardnose tactics of some academy trainers and officers, the concept of "good activity" in policing (e.g. traffic stops, tickets, arrests), and her own philosophy of working as a police officer.
We also further discuss her relationships to local churches and her role as a deacon and storyteller and how this influenced her work style of community policing, her eventual career change to social work as she became more involved with social justice activists (e.g. the Occupy Movement), her volunteer work at a refugee center, and examples of and the need for restorative justice.

I talk a little bit about my time as a ward of the State of Texas, since the halfway house I lived in as a teenager was two blocks away from our interview site. Part 2 of 2. Interview with a gay Christian trans man in Houston Texas. We discuss the church and related activist communities he's been involved with, his history with conservative and liberal Lutheran churches, the Seminex movement and the schism within American Lutheranism, accepting the harmful status quo or proactively changing things for the better, his shift toward involvement in the Episcopal Church, and how his faith grew from being accepted as a gay trans man.
I also talk a little bit about a Quaker organization's early and very open acceptance of gay people during the height of the AIDS/HIV crisis in the mid-to-late 80s.
We further discuss other individual welcoming/affirming denominations in Houston and their struggles with their governing bodies, AIDS/HIV hospice care by churches, how pastors pushed back on gay marriage restrictions, struggles with welcoming churches not being public about LGBT+ acceptance, the Integrity USA movement within Episcopal churches, participating in Pride events and being asked about why he's a Christian, the harm of quietism, how well-to-do, liberal Christians sometimes hide out and don't do progressive activism even when it's desperately needed, and how the Religious Right effectively pushes their regressive anti-gay and anti-trans agendas.
We also discuss privilege, diversity, and opening up the trans group he helps lead (TMAH, see link below) by directly addressing issues of race and ethnicity, the difficult topic of being a "white savior", and sharing power and leadership with POC.

Part 2 of 2. Interview with a revolutionary communist person who identifies as neutrois and trans masculine (transmasc). In part 2, we discuss Trump and how his presidency inspired many people to become politically active, the erosion of confidence in electoral politics, how covid allowed people be off work and re-evaluate their lives, formation of the Trans Masculine Alliance of Houston, the big can of worms of how the Right works together vs how the Left works together, subjectivity vs objectivity, why it's important to have a trans masculine focused group, our philosophies of doing activism, how the institution of slavery is still active in US prisons, clashes within US communism, misconceptions about China after Mao (e.g. realism, imperialism, robust capitalism, US 2.0), and Confucius Institutes at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
We also discuss Black Lives Matter (#blm) "Democratic Socialism" (DSA), the lack of a strong Leftist movement, how it's difficult to break from capitalism, and the need to constantly interrogate what you are doing and if it's helpful.

Shane Brodie interviews Bob Spencer, a former manager of the Fairbanks North Star Borough animal shelter in the 1970's. We discuss the early days of the shelter and why he created indoor drop-off kennels. We also discuss the Borough's plans NOT to include drop-off kennels in their new animal shelter and why that's a bad idea.
With our very cold climate here in Fairbanks, it is humane to offer this service to the people who are surrendering their companion and small livestock animals. When domesticated animals are left outside in the winter without any shelter, they often freeze to death. Let's make sure that we include indoor drop-off kennels in the new shelter's construction plans!

We're on our way to a vote! The ALRA has ordered our representation election which will take place from October 13th at 9 AM to October 26th at 4 PM. The vote will be conducted through an electronic voting system called Intelivote. Eligible voters will be able to vote either online or over the phone using a pin that will be sent to their email.

Manh Choh Ore Truck Protest - Carlson Ctr Fairbanks, AK on Aug 26, 2023
This is a sound collage of why protesters were speaking out and waving signs at the Youth Safety event at the Carlson Center, which is owned by the borough. Police were called on protesters for the false claim of damage to the Manh Choh mine project ore truck. Some protestors had laid on the ground, near the tires and underneath the trucks as a visual protest of what will eventually happen if we allow these trucks on our publicly owned roads. Protesters focused on how proper legal steps like permitting were fast-tracked, the lack of safety with having 100ft trucks on our highways, the ore itself as a significant source of pollution, how ore trucks will block our main 2-lane highway from EMS, military and mail transit, how these trucks will eventually collide with passenger vehicles and school buses, how death is part of the business plan, and how the public is paying (and will continue to pay...) for all of this infrastructure for a private business.
Even with a false claim of damage to trucks, protesters were threatened with arrest, had their photos taken by a Kinross contracted professional photographer, Black Gold employees laughed at and walked away from protesters and press who asked them reasonable questions, and borough representatives refused to speak on record about their role in all of this.

In late July 2023, Shane Brodie interviewed Barb Schumann of Advocates for Safe Alaska Highways (ASAH) regarding the Kinross Manh Choh industrial ore haul road that is being proposed to run directly on our public highways. We talk about the background of the mining project, how ASAH was formed, the dangers of 250 miles of industrial use and public use on the same two-lane road (e.g. school bus stops), the extra pollution loads that will affect water and air quality, how our roads will be degraded, long term liability and costs to the public, and ASAH's goals and calls to action.

Interview with a trans group leader in New Jersey. We talk about Medford Lakes and other "shore towns" in NJ, his suburban cabin, how the area isn't gentrified, my gig work experiences, his work in the auto insurance and bodywork industries, new business models from covid (e.g. ghost kitchens), his fairly easy transition at work, his struggles with his Right-wing family members, how states like NJ might become sanctuaries, medical tourism, and issues around immigration and the border wall.
After a short break we talk about hunting and fishing, hurricanes and tornadoes on the eastern seaboard, the giant dog park nearby (Freedom Park, see link below), police surveillance in New Jersey, the responsibility of having a pocketknife when we were kids, how camping changed from being a poor and middle-class past time to an elite one, learning people's pronouns, vacation Bible school as a teenager, his religious curiosity, and his relationship with his girlfriend.
There were many technical difficulties, so there are many edits in this video. His smartwatch created electrical interference and the heat of the day kept overheating my computer which resulted in some loss of footage.

We talk about her training in diversity and the support of her union, her love of Detroit MI and Louisville KY, how the pandemic gave people space to explore gender, how she came out as trans and is enjoying her life, the bystander effect vs speaking up for other people, her love of the outdoors and how she cultivates survival skills, her hobby as a gunsmith, chest binding and gender affirmation, the resurgence of antisemitism and other bigotry, how Dave Chappelle's supposedly comedic routines have turned malicious and hateful, and some of her struggles at work.
My guest was so generous and kind to my dog and I. After the interview, she treated me to dinner at a pub in a nearby town and she gave my dog a bag of food and a bunch of toys! We had a fun time.
