In the seventeenth episode of season four, I am joined by Alana Yorke to overthink about strength with a stroke.
We dive into:
• Music before, during, and after stroke
• How stroke impacted mental wellness
• Finding humour and joy in tough situations
Alana Yorke’s Destroyer is an art-pop stunner that represents both a creative triumph and a personal transformation. From its genesis, the album was anchored in the idea of a solitary descent to face the self and come back wholly changed. The universe of Destroyer is an otherworld where snapshots of Yorke’s psychic landscape are fanned out against a layered musical backdrop coloured by a 21-piece string orchestra, the ultraviolet cool of ’80’s synth-pop, the austere grace and rhythmic cadences of minimalist contemporary composers and the whole-hearted reverberation of anthems that call forth echoes from the unconscious, somewhere between the tidal forces of Kate Bush and Philip Glass. Toward the end of the multi-year effort of making the album, Yorke survived a hemorrhagic stroke which led to unparalleled experiences of existence, and an extraordinary recovery. Now as she rises above the surface, Destroyer has become an offering from the depths, transforming emotions from her singular experience into a gift of universal resonance.

(By the way, please ignore the lawn mower in the background for about a minute at the twenty-six minute mark. I'm trying hard not to overthink about it;)

A JUNO nomination, MuchMusic Video Award noms, multiple East Coast Music and Music Nova Scotia Award wins, John has grown his band In-Flight Safety from small-town art project to the world stage. From David Bowie’s email endorsement in the early days to some iconic Film & TV placements, European tours and radio play on the BBC, John has kept busy since day one.
John’s deep fascination with making music was born the day the Mullane family acquired its first home synthesiser in 1987. By 17, he was recording his own songs on a 4-track cassette recorder. Shortly thereafter - inspired by bands like Sigur Ros - his attention turned to a cinematic brand of rock music that lead him to form In-Flight Safety.
Since In-Flight Safety’s ‘Conversationalist’ album cycle winded down John has been pointing his focus outward. Using an artistic process he developed over years of collaborations he has been spending his time of late producing and co-writing with other artists. By using his skills for concise effective ideas, and feet-up ideas John’s current priority is helping artists find their own creative point of view.

In my ninth episode, it's all me. No theme. Just me. Overthinking my thoughts...
I recorded this one on October 4th with full intentions of releasing it one week ago. Then I got scared. So I let myself overthink it and push it off to the side. As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety – and crippling grief since I lost my mother in March of this year – it can be really challenging to "put myself out there" like this. But I was compelled to record it for a reason. So, here it is: Raw and Uncut (and still scared).
