As a kid, heroes that looked like myself were not on the covers of skateboard magazines. In steps, skateboarding LEGEND- @pepwilliams. Being one of the few African-American skateboarders on the cover of Thrasher Magazine, was something of an anomaly. Although it was 1991, he was only the 3rd who’d ever graced the cover. Strange times we lived in. Although, it’s over 30 years ago- his hero status has never changed. So, it’s with great pleasure, I bring you all this exclusive interview with the man himself.Tune in, as Pep talks growing up skating Watts in the 70s. San Diego skateboarding LEGEND Alphonzo Rawls, grew up just like any other 80’s skate rat. Spent hours with friends at the local curb-cut. That eventually led to meeting new friends, going to the local skateparks & contests, etc. The terrain was limited, the vibes were high and skateboarding was a way of life. Today, we’re gonna talk about those times, and more on the mighty, mighty WCRP on Skateboarding.

After crushing every contest in his path. The Ohio native was crowned NSA Street Champion in ‘88, and soon after- took the world by storm. Becoming the first street pro for G&S Skateboards, was no small task. Yet, Mark handled it all with style & grace. One of the top selling skateboards, classic photos & magazine covers.. Mans did it really big. And, he’s here on WCRP today to tell his story.

There is zero doubt, that Frankie Hill is anything other than skatebaording royalty. He single-handily, transformed an era of street skating, thats still mimicked to this very day. Like a true skateboarding veteran, the American Nomad never once forgot where he came from. Why he does it, and why he still loves it. That, ladies & gentleman- IS the culture.

Throughout the years, friends come & go. Some, more memorable than others. Matt Pailes has been a friend, for close to 30years. I’d met Matt, before either of us had even migrated to California as teenagers. Not knowing what the future held, we‘d all eventually link up in SF. Skated everyday. All with the same hopes & dreams.
As time went by, most of those early Northern California friendships fell wayside. Some, no longer with us. Some, became too cool. Some- remained the same. Matt Pailes, has ALWAYS been the same guy since day one: awesome person to be around, absolute charger on a skateboard & one of the funniest people I‘ve had the pleasure of calling a friend.

The year was 1993. I remember it like yesterday, seeing Buk skating down 85 South in the Yall So Stupid video. Peep the video, for actual-factual evidence. My man even did a kick flip, and alladat. I wasnt the only one who saw it. It was in heavy rotation on BET, MTV, Video Music Box, etc.. Here’s my question: How can one talk skateboarding, and hip-hop? And, leave this man out of the equation? This gentleman was the first one to mash the cultures together, in a huge arena. Make no mistake about it- Uncle Buk, IS the culture.

When i first started WCRP, my vision was to educate. Plus, deliver the REAL history of skateboarding. Straight from the unsung heroes of skateboarding. One of the first gentlemen that came to mind- Don Hillsman. If you grew up skateboarding in the 80s. Especially, in the South. Don’s story, is that of legend. We hear these rappers who claim “King of the South”. But we all know who the real King is. One of the few skaters that made it to the big leagues, when they weren’t just handing out contracts & pro models. One of the first skateboarders to ever do a 540 on vert. Walked away from one of the biggest companies in skateboarding, over racism. What more really needs to be said? This man, is a national treasure.
