Podcasting is an excellent way to grow your audience. But still your most valuable asset as an entrepreneur is your email list. My guest today, Tracy Beavers, is sharing some of her top organic strategies for growing your email list.
“Your email list is your number one thing you need for business success. So I would rather you focus on using social media to build your list rather than your follower count.” -Tracy Beavers
Too many business owners are fixated on social-media follower counts. And we podcasters are naturally monitoring listener counts. But Facebook and Instagrams have gone offline before. And heaven forbid Apple Podcasts or Spotify should glitch one day! We simply have no control over these third-party platforms. (I do trust podcast platforms more than I do social media!)
Our email lists are the one thing that we own. Even if our email service provider goes offline for a day, we can have a downloaded copy of the emails our people give us. We can reach our community outside of social media and our podcasts.
That’s why it’s so essential to build a strong email list.

This week I’m chatting with Jennifer Senn, a certified life and loss coach and the host of Navigating Baby Loss, about how she uses her podcast to create a community of support for parents who are experiencing the grief of stillbirth.
Just like the work she does, Jen has a very unique and niched podcast. When I have talked in other episodes about making sure that your brand matches your content and your audience’s needs, Jen’s show is the perfect example of what I mean. In fact, I’ve mentioned her podcast before.
Jen has a very wam and comforting presence, which is exactly what her listeners need. And yet she is also future-focused and provides hope.
Being a bereaved mother of stillborn twin girls, Jen has been where her listeners are now. She knows her audience and what they need. And delivers it to them perfectly.
Even if you don’t “need” to listen to Jen’s show for the content, I highly recommend that you check it out for podcasting homework.
Highlights from the episode:
About Jen:
Jennifer Senn is a certified life and loss coach. After spending 10 years suffering from the grief of losing her twin girls at 32 weeks, Jen finally got the help and healing she needed through a coach. That led her down a path of becoming a coach herself to help other parents avoid years of pain and to find a path toward healing. Jen is also the host of the podcast Navigating Baby Loss.

I had so many questions for my guest Mark Asquith that we just weren’t able to stick to one topic! We had planned on talking about how to choose a podcast hosting provider—which we do discuss. But Mark is so knowledgable about the podcast industry, that we had to chat about other aspects of podcasting. Plus, I knew you’d want to hear about monetizing your show!
“I would rather you start your podcast somewhere than not start it.” -Mark Asquith
In this episode, you’ll hear about:
“So I think the point that I'm getting at is diversity monetization is really, really, really important. And it's not something many people think about because they often do think they need big numbers to make any money. And it's not, you need big numbers to make a certain type of money, but you can make a lot of other types of money without that.” -Mark Asquith

Your podcast is a compelling way to bring new clients to your business. You can also use podcasting to create an evergreen funnel for high-ticket sales—whether you already have a podcast or not.
“You don't actually even need to be an active podcaster to have a funnel, the podcast funnel. This can be something separate that you do once and it's there forever.” -Sinead Acevedo
A podcast funnel is more unique and engaging than PDF lead magnets. It provides information in a form (audio) that more people are spending time with. And it gives you the opportunity to handle listeners’ objections to working with you over the course of several bingeable episodes.
“Your content is made for a purpose: to promote your service and overcome objections.” -Sinead Acevedo

Being a guest on podcasts is a powerful way to amplify your brand, increase your fanbase, and make more sales. But so many guests mess it up by writing terrible pitches. Sending a well-crafted, customized pitch will make it much easier to get a “yes” from the host.
As a podcast host, I reject more than 90% of the pitches I receive. They tend to be that bad. It’s sad because I’m sure that many of the people behind the pitches would make good guests. But we hosts don’t have the time to do all the work that the potential guest should have done for us before they pitched us.

When you plan your content calendar, it shouldn’t be like throwing darts at a board. You can’t just wing it with when you’re going to publish what episode. As my guest Kristin Chadwick notes, you have to have a plan.
Sneak peek: “I want you to think about where do you want to take your podcast. What is the end goal? Do you want to create community? Do you want to create income? Do you want to create some sort of value? And then you’re going to work backward from there.” -Kristin Chadwick
Kristin walks you through the steps of how to plan a strategic content calendar for your podcast—whether you’re just starting out or you’re well-established in your podcast.
She also discusses the three biggest mistakes podcasters make when planning their episodes. The first one will really surprise you!

One of my main goals with this podcast is to get other women into podcasting, especially fellow moms. There just aren’t enough of us in the podcasting space. And… you have a unique voice and something important to say that your audience wants to hear.
I am so thrilled to be chatting with today’s guest, Angela Masciulli, about mompreneurs in podcasting. (You’re going to love her!)
Angela is on a mission to help other moms get into entrepreneurship to have more freedom and to bust the myth that you can’t be a successful entrepreneur and a mother. In fact, Angela says that being an entrepreneur can help you be a better mom. (I loved talking to her about this because, wow, did I struggle with those feelings when my kids were little!)
We discuss imposter syndrome with starting a business and with starting a podcast. Angela says:
“It's essentially what the podcast is. You're building your own table, and you have this incredible opportunity to ask other people to sit at it with you.”

Who am I to have my own podcast? Who would want to listen to what I have to say? Have you ever had these thoughts? Most podcasters have. And they can be stopping you from starting a podcast or from achieving greater success in your podcast.
Imposter thinking is so normal—especially amongst entrepreneurs and podcasters. We’re really putting ourselves out there in a big and public way. It makes sense that we’d sometimes feel like a “fraud.”
Even though it’s normal, it doesn’t mean you have to give into imposter thinking! This episode will help you change your thinking so you can have a more successful podcast.

Podcasting ends up being harder than you think. There are so many moving parts and tiny details to produce even one episode. No wonder most people quit their shows before they hit seven episodes. You’re a podcaster, not a website designer. But you still need a powerful website for your podcast!
If you’re just starting out and you’re on a tight budget, you can always use the free webpage that comes with your podcast hosting provider. It may sound like a big leap to go from creating an audio podcast to live-streaming a video podcast. But there are so many benefits of it—and it is so much fun!
This episode was live-streamed with my guest Joie Gharrity. We discuss the benefits of live-streaming, how to get started, best practices, and more!
Even if you end up sharing audio only, live-streaming the episode is a great way to expand your audience. You can also get more engagement by taking questions from a live audience. Taking those questions means you’ll discover what your audience is really looking for and what they really need. From there, you can hone in on customizing your show for them.
Live-streaming isn’t as difficult as you might think. I use Streamyard. That’s also what I use for recording guests without live-streaming. Choose whatever streaming platform you want. Link it to the social platform of your choice. Joie and I streamed this episode to YouTube. Then off you go!
Joie notes in our interview that you can save time in editing by playing your intro and outro during the livestream. It’s a great way to brand your livestream. Then you don’t have to edit those in later. In fact, Joie says that she does little to no editing of her livestreams at all when she later publishes them!
Personally, I love doing video. I love the energy of live-streaming. But… I prefer listening to audio podcasts. I tend not to watch many videos—except, you know, HBO Max and Apple TV+, ha ha. I create my show in multiple formats to accommodate my listeners.
Even if you prefer audio-only, you may want to consider creating multiple formats in order to reach a wider audience—to capture listeners as well as viewers and viewers who want to interact live.

It’s easy to establish yourself as an expert in your field. As my guest Nicky Billou says, experts are “a dime a dozen.” What you really want to do is establish yourself as a branded authority or a thought leader in your field.
As a thought leader, you’ll attract more high-quality clients who are willing to pay a premium to work with you. You’ll turn more of your audience into raving fans. And it will be easier to make sales.
“People are not buying their way into something. They're buying their way out of something. They're not buying their way into your program, your amazing methodology. They don't care. They're buying their way out of their hell.” -Nicky Billou

Your podcast is a powerful marketing tool for your business. You should be making money from your show. The most reliable way to do that is to promote your own services on your podcast.
“Most listeners aren’t going to reach out for your help unless you let them know that you’re available to help them!”
You can easily promote your services on your show without turning your podcast into one giant infomercial!
In this episode, you’ll learn:
It’s hard to know what link to share to send people to your podcast. Do you send them to Apple Podcasts? To Spotify? To the webpage on your podcast hosting provider? To your website?
When you’re an entrepreneur and you’re sharing a link to your podcast, ideally you want people to be able to listen to your show, get on your email list, and check out your services.
“You really don’t want to share a direct link to a podcast app because not everyone will be able to use that link.”

Podcasting is a powerful way to get listeners to take action as they get to know, like, and trust you. It can be difficult to know what is the most effective CTA to give and how to do it.
Podcasters run the risk of giving too many calls-to-action in their episodes. And even narrowing a CTA down to just one, you’ve got to know how to employ the CTA and how often to share it.
“You want to be totally clear about what you want listeners to, you want them to remember it, and you want to make it easy for them to take action on it.”

Just last Friday, I told you in episode 74 why I don’t use ChatGPT to create content for me. I’m still not! But I have started using it for a few other things in my podcast.
By the way, this episode was recorded more than a month after I recorded episode 74. So, I’ve had time to play and learn!
Since chatting with David Forman in episode 75 (recorded several weeks ago), I’ve tried out some of his suggestions. I’ve found ways to use ChatGPT as an assistant in my show.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Last Friday, I said in episode 74 that I don’t use ChatGPT. In today’s episode, I’m talking with David Forman of Clarity Creative Group about how I might be able to use ChatGPT for my podcast. Spoiler: He does change my mind!
In fact, on Wednesday, in episode 76, you’ll hear how I’ve been using ChatGPT since we recorded this episode about a month ago.
“It can summarize things. It can shorten things, it can add to things, it can change your voice. It could do poetry.” —David Forman
In this episode, you’ll learn:
David Forman is the founder of Clarity Creative Group, a digital marketing agency that focuses on helping small- and mid-sized businesses grow through digital marketing.

***PLEASE READ: I recorded this episode a couple of weeks before interviewing David Forman of Clarity Creative Group for ep. 77 on when and when not to use ChatGPT. I went into that interview with an open mind. And, sure enough, David taught me some ways that I’m totally down for using ChatGPT.
I thought about scrapping this episode as a result. But I decided to let it stand. I’ll be putting out an episode about a month from now on how I’ve started to use ChatGPT. 😊
I still have the same reservations about it that I express in this episode. I just want you to know that I’m not closed-minded—as you might suspect from this episode! Note that my focus in this episode is on using ChatGPT to create content—as opposed to tweaking or creating lists or generating questions, as David and I discuss in our interview. Be sure to check that out when it comes out!
—
ChatGPT, Midjourney, and other content-generating AI are hot topics for podcasters right now. All of this software is supposed to make our lives “easier” and “better.” In spite of having tried out some of the software, I’m not using it to create content for me.
I have personal reasons for not using it and several more global concerns.
“I understand that most people hate writing. I understand that writing is a skill that has to be learned, practiced, and honed. And that is something is most people either don’t have time to do or don’t want to do. It can be frustrating.”
In this episode, I discuss:

More and more people are finding podcasts and podcast episodes on Google. When people ask a question in Google, if Google finds a relevant podcast episode that answers their question, that episode may show up in the search results. This means that it’s really important to optimize your show and your episodes to make it easier for Google to find you.

Running a business with a chronic illness is hard enough. Adding a podcast into the mix takes extra planning to make sure that you manage your energy and don’t burn out. In this episode, I share tips that make it easier.
I officially became an entrepreneur in 1999—the same year I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, though it first emerged in 1986. I also have chronic migraine. It took 20 years to get “good” at running a business with chronic illness because most of those years went un- or under-treated—and because I ignored the illnesses and followed other people’s standard operating procedures of what it meant to be an entrepreneur and how to do business.
“In the entrepreneur world, no one makes accommodations for us. We have to make them for ourselves.”
I’ve been podcasting for fun since 2012. But, when I added a podcast to my business (now two podcasts), I knew I had to have a plan so that I wouldn’t get overwhelmed and burn out. I had to create my own standard operating procedures for my business and my podcast that took into consideration my migraines and my bipolar disorder. I had spent years getting both under control. I couldn’t let a business or a podcast destroy hard-won stability.

Do you want listeners to choose your podcast when it pops up in their podcast app? Then you need cover art that’s going to stop them from scrolling by and make them consider your show.
Along with your podcast name, your podcast cover art makes the first impression on potential listeners. And you’ve got just a split second to make a great first impression. Kick-ass cover art can draw listeners in. And dippy cover art can push them away.

Interviewing guests on your podcast is a great way to expand your audience, develop collaborations, and boost your authority. Most importantly, having guests on your show brings a different perspective and added value to your listeners. The dream is to get high-profile influencers. Let’s be honest about why: To boost your profile, to get more listeners, and to impress your listeners.
Do high-profile influencers always know more than experts with fewer followers? Nope. Do you always get a boost in listeners and downloads when you interview influencers? Nope.
You always learn something. You make great connections. And you’re providing value to your listeners. Always, always focus on the value you’re providing to your listeners!

While the primary goal of your podcast is to provide value for your listeners, you’re also doing it to benefit yourself or your business. Each episode needs a call-to-action (CTA) that will help you achieve a practical goal for your podcast or your business. There are so many CTAs you can choose from. And what you choose will depend on your specific goals and what’s going on in your business at that time. While you do not want to overwhelm your listeners with too many CTAs, you can use a bigger CTA in the form of an ad that promotes your business and an easier CTA at the end that promotes your podcast.
